  • Penny sounds like a mother and Koko is the child...so cute.

  • Someone needs to do the dishes....

  • hahahah when she sat in that box :D

  • She is like Penny's child.

  • 01:52 does she say, "Do you want a spank?"

  • If she hits her she shuld seriously DIE. (the blonde)

  • 9:30 "Dude, was that a gorilla in that car...? I am so high right now"

  • 4:39 HAHA wtf, she cleaned her thing.

  • Poor baby was just in a baf mood :3

  • Haha, Penny walks away and Koko wipes her butt with the sponge and puts it back.

  • I was hoping at a point this gorrila just said fuck it and gave her the finger XD

  • I think when training chimps, scientist should consider that gorillas and other primates have no basic human ethical nature. I think thats why she can't respond to why she stole things or misbehave.

  • @jessewang1 I think in situations like that she just lacks the vocabulary... you can teach a gorilla new words if the situation/thing ect. is close by ... how can you exactly tell how a gorilla feels at each particular time? I think shes got about the same feelings as humans do, however its way harder to read the EXACT emotions of a gorilla then the emotions of a human (if ur a human ofc)

  • with the red or yellow jacket. Or maybe Koko was angry for a different reason, there's just so much, and I feel bad for Koko unable to tell exactly why she's mad because that would be so much a relief for everyone, Koko and Penny to know exactly why she's mad. But I guess only Koko would know.

  • The problem is that Koko can't tell Penny exactly why she's angry. So everytime Penny ask Koko why she's mad, I can see that Koko really wants to tell her exactly why she's mad but unable to because of the limited communication. But I guess I kinda understand, like if Penny teaches Koko to sign "want to go back to jungle, family, gorillas" or "sick and tired of learning this 24/7" or anything like that, Koko might sign that all the time and Penny could misinterpret that as she did with the

  • 6:04

    Koko: NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

  • @m9davies about Noah's ark, this is what I believe, that the species on it evolved and that it goes with the theory of evolution and also, other cultures have records of a flood that happened, not just the bible and Jesus is the son of God, he can do anything!! And Mary was a virgin and if she did cheat someone would have told on her! But the Bible isn't just about facts, it is to tell us that we can be with our maker and creator and that he loves us no matter what, he loves you too soooo much!

  • They should do other stuff... like go tree climbing or something. she wouldve liked that..

  • Comment removed

  • This is so sad! Koko should rip her head off!

  • 10 muinits later, more like 10 muinits after beating the poop out of koko

  • Saying how she should be free and that she is a wild animal. Throughout this entire documentary, have you seen Koko go wild as you people think of? The closest is her flinging the pages, but she was going along with the trainer. I hate how humans are so arrogant and think every creature that isn't human is a monster.

  • @Killman1134

We humans are monsters because we don't leave other animals alone.

    Man.... we're fucked up!

  • I love how so many people say that 'she so

  • I love how Koko, when confronted with his bad behaviour tries to solve the matter by kissing Penny. I would too.

  • @20191 koko is a female sweetie

  • @Taylor2cutie my bad cutie pie.

  • Koko gets mad and punches the door. What an adolescent...

  • I wanna go back in time and marry Penny.

  • I dont like the way the dr treats her.. When she's bad she gets treated like a dog when she's good she gets treated like a human.. That gorilla has feelings.. Thats why she cant treat her like a dog because she has feelings and may not know what she has done wrong.

  • @Holstboy No.. she just treats her like a child the whole time... because that's how Koko thinks.

  • 0:50 Definition of "going ape shit."

  • That ape could rip her in half if it wanted to. So sad the humans want to humanize the wild. She should be freed!!!

  • That's a paddlin'

  • protestant?! poor gorilla being stuck with religion..

  • 1:54 reminds you that this is an animal

  • 04:39 "Right, the floor is done, now I'll wipe it on myself and leave it for Penny"

  • I know penny is an expert and all but seems in this segment of the video as well in others that Koko was communicating things anyone could understand and that she didn't seem to get. Also you could tell Koko was upset at her for having a bit of a bad wrong side of the bed attitude and as she herself said Koko will get upset when she is so it seemed that her being short was just aggravating Koko and the whole situation. Not trying to sound mean but it didn't bode well when she told him to cut too

  • @Hoodmonsa agreed, she forgets its an animal sometimes.. i tihnk since she doesnt have any kids she forgets that this is not her own human child but an animal doing unnatural animal things and dont expect miracles

  • @tamithomas Agreed!!

  • It's going to be scary if animals like this learn to understand where they "naturally" belong and where they are now, and start asking questions such as " why am I held captive?"

  • I take it that most comments about this being abusive belong from people who:

    A. Don't have children

    B. Don't have pets

    C. Have both, and yet do nothing to discipline them

And yes it would be wonderful for any gorilla to go back in the wild where they belong, but as long as they are poachers, habitat destruction and tourism there is little hope for survival. There is roughly 600 wild mountain gorillas left in the wild. And the eastern and western lowland isn't alot either.

  • Did that woman just punish a gorilla for being a gorilla? Come on...

  • lol poor koko. she would much prefer to chill in the zoo with other gorillas without a human on her case 24/7

  • Koko is a very strong animal, and her human handlers must keep the upper hand. If Koko doesn't respect her handler she would be very difficult to deal with and quite potentially dangerous. Penny needs to be firm with her so Koko can understand guidelines for acceptable behavior.

  • Just like kids, you shouldn't be convincing Koko that she is "BAD"

  • it seems likely that penny is a bit controlling but i think that's because this is a scientific experiment and you do need to control certain factors to get accurate and acceptable results. of course i could be wrong and that could just be her personality. either or

    :D

  • 'ok cut'? what does she beat koko when the cam isnt on?

  • the girl is a control freak !

  • Listening to that control freak for the last 5 parts made me act up like poor Koko too.

I'm watching this thing and I'm studying human behaviour not the Gorilla's. Gorillas may be only 98% Human but our genes are, for sure, 100% Gorilla.

  • people in the 70s talk so weird lol

  • i WANNA HAVE KOKO LIVE WITH ME LOL but my mum might object ><

  • I haven't notice Koko doesn't look at the camera

  • To bad she didn't get a chance to meet Alex the parrot before he died :(

  • Koko would not survive in the wild, like any normal Gorilla, because she was born in captivity. Koko also has no idea about what Gorilla's should or should not do, Penny purely is trying to teach Koko manners and to be good or bad, just like a mother. Which is what their relationship ship is like.

  • I am troubled when penny scalds Koko for behaving like a gorilla .I do see that koko loves penny and i also asert that penny loves koko ....but koko should be aloud to be a gorilla

  • "why are you sad koko?"

"i want to go back to the jungle, where i belong"

  • @123Nikodemus "I want to go back to the jungle, which I have never seen, as I was born in captivity, and where I will be unsure of where my next meal is coming from, or whether today will be the day that me and my entire family will be poached for bush meat."

  • @tehinfidel yes lets pretend gorillas are happier in a cell than the jungle behaving normally.. oh shes never been in the jungle? oh, she must love being in the cell then.. thumbs up!

  • @tehinfidel lets pretend koko likes this bitch pushing her around all day in her preschool cell

  • @longfootbuddy After Penny finished her studies with Koko, she was supposed to leave Koko. However, Koko, who has been with Penny since age 1, refused to part. The solution? Koko now lives with Penny and both are very happy. Koko had no offspring and Penny never married because a husband would prove problematic to taking care of Koko.

  • @tehinfidel Koko does look pretty sad and irritated a lot. Probably because it's like a kid who is in school 24/7 in the honors program.

  • @tehinfidel Yeah, of course. There's always a reason to keep gorillas in captivity and never allow them back to where they belong. Was it Koko's fault she was born in captivity? No. Was it Koko's fault that humans are stupid and cruel to animals to become poachers? No. It's humans' fault, and yet they do nothing about it and sit here on their big asses when they can stop all this madness, instead of saying, o, no we can't. Have you ever tried? No. But you sure as hell can abuse them.

  • @123Nikodemus i also bet thats why she was mad at the other part when she broke the box. thats the sign of her anger saying i want to go back to jungle lololol

  • @mariomoney1001 "back" implies that she was there once before which of course is false.

  • @123Nikodemus i want to go "back" in the jungle where i get expulsed by tree cutting companies which want to use the area of the jungle to make "biodiesel" ...:-/

  • @CapitanoGUC

    yes i know, MANKIND SUCKS

    good luck to you

  • @123Nikodemus Are you serious? Why should the gorilla want back to the jungle(which he doesn't have any experience with), and why should it be longing for leaving Patterson, whom she loves? You haven't learned anything about the similarities in mentality between the great apes from this documentary?

  • @Stinukli

yeah your right, that gorilla doesnt belong to the jungle--- he should play playstation und watch americas got talent or something like that, like all apes do

    my bad

  • @123Nikodemus I knew it: You didn't get the point, and your comment is a complete fail.

  • @Stinukli

    hehe sweet

go on and live in your own world

  • @123Nikodemus the jungle that is rapidly disappearing because of human greed and stupidity and what's left is under attack by violent poachers (again due to human greed and stupidity)??? that jungle??? or otherwise...what other jungle is there!!!!!!

  • @123Nikodemus you got told haha

  • @123Nikodemus You are just stupid, go whine to your hippie friends.

  • Koko is so damn cute. I wish I could just give her a hug.

  • what a bitch! i hope one day KoKo loses it and bites her face off

  • Penny: Get in your room you damn dirrty ape!

    Koko: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • what is it with gorillas and blonde chicks?

  • damn shame we have to get old Dr Patterson.

  • who funded this?

  • i used to have a ape

we taught him stuff like that...he is such a smartass

  • Dr Patterson must have the patience of a saint to have done this.

  • @thedancemetaltwins You mean Koko must have the patience of a saint to not rip humans head off after improsining her of 24/7 lecture and never have the ability to tell Penny exactly why she's mad. Do you even know why Koko was mad? No, you don't, so don't assume that Penny has the right to be impatient, it is Koko that has the right to be impatient.

  • i kept waiting for koko to snap and bite her face off

  • Enough with the monkey business!

  • i think this should be played to every single creationist on the planet. how can you possibly refute evolution after seeing this?

  • @m9davies Believe me!! They are so mind-closed!! that this is just god miracles!!

  • @m9davies Alot of other animals are similar too.. doesnt mean they evolved from eachother. And if it were true, which its not, why havent the rest of the primates evolved just humans? Lol because its a dumb theory, thats why. Now stop questioning god's work, get a life, and shut up =.=

  • @gypsyqueenmaya it's also a dumb theory that noah built a massive boat and kept 2 of all the worlds 5 MILLION species on without them killing each other. or that jesus came back to life. or that mary wasn't some dumb slut that got pregnant behind joseph's back. the fact is that evolution is no longer a relatively primitive darwinian theory but a matter of science and cold hard facts. try reading a book sometime...other than that stupid one you persist in reading.

  • "why do you rip things?"

look at videos of gorillas in the wild and I think you'll see that the answer is quite simple.

  • Comment removed

  • This lady has the patience of a goddamn saint!

  • @toasty100 If you mean this lady by Koko, then yes.

  • Hahaha... not YOU in the box!!!

  • wtf! that gorilla just kissed her :S never looking at humans the same way again

  • @antmayfield but when a dog licks your face, how is that different?

  • @hotwhire

    Lol

  • I know the lady was mad for this entire segment, but I kept wanting her to calm down and take a breather. Koko only started misbehaving because Penny was angry to begin with. She even said that when she was angry, Koko was angry. Koko's sensitive and only started acting out because Penny was threatening. I do it all the time. Me and Koko are two peas in a pod; both of us very emotional. We don't like being yelled at and we don't like negativity around us or else it too makes us negative.

  • @Sabbygara You are right. However I also understand Dr Penny's position. She needs to impose her dominance or else Koko WILL take advantage and WILL try to be the dominant and that could end up really bad... This woman is doing a very difficult work here, I'm so amazed by her patience...

  • @Sabbygara Why was Koko angry though? Because Koko is kept prison away from her home and being taught 24/7 non-stop that is out of her comfort zone.

  • This is sad to watch. The woman keeps on talking and signing and most of it appears to go right past Koko, who is a gorilla who just wants to be a gorilla. What's the obsession with making her into some pseudo-human? The most active that I've seen her thus far is in the company of another gorilla. Whenever she's alone with this woman she seems uninterested and distracted. Getting angry for making a mess? That's what animals do. Jeez.

  • @theowneplays Do you not understand you retard? IT HAS NEVER BEEN IN THE WILD! therefore, it has NO idea what it is like. if you slung koko into the wild tommorrow it would be sad and probably die because she is not used to it.

  • @theowneplays Have you not watched this from part one? children behave the same way, good days and bad days.

  • animal cruelty

  • such like nazi hustles.

  • For anyone who's getting frustrated with my comments I am sorry, but I am really into this! OK? LOL!

    Take care,

    mrbluenun

  • This very clever woman seems not to understand the obvious sometimes. This breaking of things is just like any young child. She is finding her boundaries and also finding what is good to play with, and what is safe. All those kinds of things. I know Penny has to keep an eye on Koko otherwise she might take advantage, though to me there seems quite a lot of respect. Just as she would may be have with her own Mother? After I wrote this, Penny said exactly the same thing! YES!

  • @mrbluenun No, Koko isn't misbehaving like a young child. She's angry because she's sick and tired of learning all this thing 24/7 and taken away from her family and home and her fellow gorillas. Where do you see that in a young child generally speaking? No where. I say generally speaking because I understand there are some young child that are imprison and stuff like that, but yeah, Koko isn't doing this like a young child, she has a much different reason.

  • Man I'd love to live in the 70's in California, driving down the highway in my impala, listening to Led Zep with my talking gorilla in the passenger's seat.

  • @spontaneoususername This is the best thing I've ever heard

  • @spontaneoususername Yeh that's BJ and the Bandit or something. CLint Eastwood with an arangutan.

  • @spontaneoususername I would love to be pulled over by cops :D

  • @spontaneoususername That sounds awesome.

  • Let her fucking destroy things, shes an ape. Like how dogs like to chew on things so you get them a chew toy. Let her be an ape.

  • @November10th1775USMC Yeah but most owners of dogs usually beat their dogs when they chew and destroy

  • i feel sorry for koko. she probably wakes up sad some mornings because she realises shes living in a cage patronizsed everytime she is spoken to. she tried to get a nut to eat and she got yelled at she was probably hungry and tired of getting introuble just for accidently breaking things i mean she broke a box..shes a gorilla, its hard not to break things theyre strong. pooor poor koko

  • well what she do to her when it cut away ? mmmmm

  • I think this is a fascinating documentary, and I really appreciate the work of the researcher.

But I do feel that she gets distracted sometimes and really starts treating the gorilla like a human child and responds to it in the same way as a frustrated parent.

On the other hand, she lives with the gorilla 24/7. So I guess we can't expect her to have an even temper all the time.

  • Why would they lie to a gorilla in saying that God exists. She should stay Atheist. :)

  • @Yeggerson Where did she say that? If she did, prove that shes lying. Just because you don't believe in God it doesn't mean that someone saying 'He exists' is a liar. They could just as easily call you a liar for saying he doesn't. As for someone else's comment about hierarchy being some sort of sarcastic symbolism, no, she does have to make Koko's views line up with her own in order to establish dominance and be the leader. The experiment is to see if gorillas have the capacity for language.

  • "Could koko be the first white american protestant gorilla?" LMFAO!!!!! AHH!!!!

  • @jennamarisco If anything Koko is "black" not white.

  • just lika any kid i know

  • LOL The FIrst American Protesant Gorilla LOL

  • i sit in cardboard boxes when i break things too :)

  • that koko stair and then move head fast was a clear sign of thinking and sad about somthing i think the zoo book and she in there

  • Comment removed

  • Did the keeper threaten to 'spank' Koko, (1:50) when all she is doing is acting like a playful gorilla. The keeper ought to be careful otherwise the day the keeper does something Koko doesn't like she might just get spanked back...

  • @tete2brioche weeeey! i agree sir i agree

  • @tete2brioche Indeed she did.

Did you hear the section around 8 minutes in where the narrator talks about dominance in the hierarchical structure? On the National Geographic channel, I was watching a show about gorillas. This statement about the hierarchy is really true, and the gorillas do smack eachother sometimes.

You're right that the researcher could really get hurt if the gorilla hit her though.

  • Why was Koko rubbing the sponge on her crotch at 4:38? lol

  • Erm, shouting and telling off a gorilla is the last thing I'd want to do! - Female or male. =-|

  • that lady is effin hawt !

  • the best way to study animals is to go in their natural habitat and put in the hard yards to observe. Not bring them in our world where their dignity and freedom is striped from them. Everyone/thing has their own life that they deserve to live not be held captive/slave for anothers own agenda, even if you think it's 'helping' them.

  • Koko went ape

  • we force our way of thinking upon chickens, cows, even corn. is it wrong? is it right? its all personal gain in one way or another, so whats wrong with raising a gorilla so it can understand us and we can understand it? we mutilate kill breed all types of animals and plants everyday so why limit ourselves to tulips and dogs?are gorillas superior then they? or should we let nature decide which species will join us?

all i know is that project koko is there for harmless knowledge to help us decide

  • "koko" clearly wants to be ina jungle or a gorilla enviroment... and its genetics, the monkeys dna wants to climb, wants eat flower/leaves...

poor gorrilla, forced to learn things that arnt n its blood to do...

but i guess there learning from all this right....

  • And of what consequence is a mess of papers to a gorilla? None, so why yell at Koko? I would be misbehaving if trapped in that cage/trailer too! Let a gorilla monkey around, climb trees. This was a fascinating study, but why couldn't they do their "research" outside at least?

  • @ig1977 They did take Koko outside.

  • @ig1977 If they did the research outside, chances are they probably wouldn't go far. And you got to to watch other films they did with Koko, she seems very content with her surroundings.

  • at 6:17 this is the first time in the movie I've seen Koko in assertive Gorilla stance, then 10 minutes later she hugged and kissed Fran. Absolutely love it.

  • have you taught koko the word freedom yee put that in her vocabulary

  • Why does Koko rip things? Because Koko is a gorilla, not a human child.

    This "science" is ridiculous.

  • @CDLver Have you met human children? KokO did exactly what children do, children destroy everything in the house, they draw on the walls, they rips books, they beat up everyone around them and when you tell them to stop they attack you and cry and get stubborn. This science is awesome and i'm glad someone is taking time out and proving to the world about the intelligent life around us.

  • @nahyank, Dr. Penny was a paid researcher conducting a curiosity-driven experiment that served human beings no good purpose. Koko is not a human child and a human child is not a gorilla. Period.

Incidentally, when Koko 'misbehaved,' as gorillas do in forced confinement, Dr. Penny Patterson, an academic, a degreed scientist, slapped Koko's face as if she were disciplining a human child. Dr. Penny was conducting cuckoo science!

  • @CDLver You are a Wild Gorilla.

  • @CDLver But Koko IS like a human child in so many ways!

  • @CDLver Children do this sort of thing. We all get mad, we all have the capacity to be destructive.

  • i think ko ko was trying to make herself taller and intimidate! XD

  • omg a straw and water lol

  • "Look at this, Koko! You broke it! You are a bad gorrilla! Now clean this mess up, you bad, bad gorrilla!"

"Bitch! I'll snap you like a fucking twig! Get the fuck off my back, you dumb human!"

  • the first white protestant gorilla hehehe. i'm glad koko doesn't go to sunday school....

  • awe. shes such a little suck up. Everytime she says bad or trouble, she gives her a hug or kiss. lol.

  • Ripping things apart, oh man, the poor thing is probably bored sometimes, just like a kid. But hey, she has a lot to keep her occupied, too.

  • Come on you can't make them act exactly like a human.

  • oh she so hot!

  • yea

  • @ 6:17 yeeeeeaaaah gooo koko, you beat that doctors ass!!!!!!!!

  • i feel bad for koko...its any wonder she's causing trouble, being stuck in that tiny prison all the time

  • Damn, i didnt know that garilla's got so smart. Thats pretty amazing

  • This part makes me a bit angry. When Koko doesn't want to go in the cage and the Dr. gets cut or something while trying to get her in the cage, she goes back to get something (maybe a cattle prod) and Koko runs in the cage(like she been shocked or what ever before) then they cut out the video.....obviously hurting the poor Gorilla.

Overall I think this is a very interesting video, although I feel sorry for Koko as she can't roam free in the wilderness.

  • @CoboltCurse i feel the same way..i dont know why people thumbs down you

  • I feel bad for koko at 3:25, SHE knew she was being "bad", and her sympathy is obvious on her face! Amazing that some animals are capable of guilt.

Either that, or she's good at manipulating people by feigning emotions, which would be even more interesting.

  • It seems that Koko wants to be left alone for a minute. The contact with this lady seems a bit overbearing and overly intense. It makes me yearn for a moment without her just looking at it!
