They do it so they can get incapacity benefit. It costs the NHS / taxpayer a FORTUNE for anti-retroviral drugs. An eye watering amount - serveral thousand ££ per person, per week.

@chrisholland you can only get incapacity benefit here if you have AIDS and even then it needs to be verified by 2 sperate consultants and the defintiion of AIDS here is a set of several symptoms and oppurtunistic diseases that become present over several months. When these symptoms go into remission (which some do) you come off benefit, it's monitored. Anti-retroviral drugs cost NHS £450 pounds per month also, per person.

There's also an urban legend that some people are immune to the disease - but many of the people so identified have now died from HIV. This is not a prank you can laugh off later. Unless you believe in ghosts.

Bug parties are making a comeback. There was a time when gay men did it so they no longer had to live with the uncertainty of whether or not they were positive.

Now people do it for economic reasons--at least, here in the states they do. There are many health care programs available for HIV+ people, and some people who can't afford medical care will intentionally infect themselves because they can't afford healthcare otherwise.

I'm not saying I agree with it, but I see the logic.

Let me answer the question you people are asking. "WHY"? There are a number of reasons why someone would want it. They all, unfortunately make quite a lot of sense.

1) This was the most common reason in San Francisco -> I;m scared of contracting it so much, that when I have it, I can just get on with my life

I once heard an interview of someone who who wanted to get AIDS because the people he knew who had AIDS were getting all the attention.

Some gay kids feel that getting AIDS is what adult homosexuals do -- a rite of passage. Others want to get AIDS to fit it with their peers.
