  • my uncle put this on a mix tape & gave it to me for Christmas when I was around 14. i've steered clear of top 40 radio ever since.

  • My favorite SM track - absolutely stunning - still sounds good almost 30 yrs later - epi Steve Lillywhite production - timeless - youth, energy, danger, sex, hope...

  • What a band! Gods of intelligent pop music!

  • i love the group, the song.....since 80´s years.i have all of then.....this guys never...never....never...imitate u2...they has the style very, very, very good.... desde os anos 80 continuo escultando eles..em relacao muita coisa atual eles ganham de 10...

  • Não consigo parar de ouvir isso

  • you know, what this song REALLY needs?

  • If I had the gift of flight I'd play this song endlessly flying across the world dreaming of the 80's coming back again. I miss the movies back then...

  • Too many changes in the line-up. That's why U2 outran them.

  • Where have all the good band and song gone to?

  • Simple minds had a such a powerful sound, this song along with ghostdancing are timeless classics

  • See you all on Beerfest, Belgrade, Serbia. They`re performing aswell. :)

  • I was born in 1968 and was about 16 when this came out..We all had the vinyl album and danced during thousand hours on this....

  • @BorlandRIP7 im so jealous of you!

  • gamaneeeeeeeeeeeee.

  • jim kerr comes across a lot like some kind of self indulgent ego centric but good luck to him hes wonderful

  • Early Simple Minds were streets ahead of U2 for originality , Look at songs like 'The American' , 'I Travel' and 'themes for great cities' . If modern band were making these tracks the likes of Zane Lowe would be gushing in his pants over them Instead of fawning over the crap that radio 1 does. Such a shame that the Minds dried up creatively around 'Once upon a time' .

  • I'm your archetypal "Greatest Hits" listener: there are some of the early tracks (this is one, Love Song is another) that do it for me; Belfast Child is a great favourite, Alive and Kicking is another, so is Waterfront. But there are other tracks (Glittering Prize, Mandela Day, Ghostdancing) that do nothing to encourage me to delve deeper. Oh well - I'll just enjoy this while I can.

  • overproduced nonsense ... the irony is they performed this song amazingly well live ... a total enigma of a band .. and i say that as a real fan from the mars bar years and onwards ... they sold out and lost their edge after NGD .. shame ....

  • quanti ricordi con i minds

  • Beat band ever!

  • Rage! Rage! R-R-Rage! Rage!

    Raaaaaage...!

  • same they don't get same Respect as U2 i think they are better

  • best scottish band around

  • U3???........BULLSHIT! Love U2 but they're the ones who were the imitators, more like "Simple Celtics". Only one Jim Kerr!!

  • @digitalceo95 Simple Minds are Celtics too.

  • @digitalceo95 Spot on !

  • @digitalceo95 Yeah. You tell them. Lol.

  • love sick crazy.... love sick.... when i was a teen... dreaming of her beauty...

    touching... touching...

and listening to this song... ha ha ha

  • whene you drive you understand this song !!!

  • your a crazy man john marston

  • 2:15 is this the same lake as displayed on the "Life in a day" album? anyone got a clue?

  • Probably my favourite Minds tune..

  • @lovesGenet Alive And Kicking,IMHO

  • For some reason, the theme from rage comes to mind.

  • @quizmaster85

Yes, because rage used this track for their closing of rage and still do :-)

  • This is great music!

  • THANK YOU for posting this!!! MMMMUUUUUAHHHH!!!!

  • 1st video i ever recorded on my BETAMAX video recorder machine - so much nice memories !!!!!!!!!

  • @mk2007al Sony Betamax versus JVC vhs. Such a standard war! :)

  • @Pasq6712 yes those were the days and the best system would have been Video 2000 but it was too expensive. Imagine i won my videorecorder in a supermarket lottery when i was 15 y/o and was king of the class :-)

  • Get the 12 inch

  • Bompins, I agree 100% but I have to say that I am listening to Sons and fascination and Sister Feelings Call a great deal as well. Sparkle was an entirely different sound. I remember working in a gas station one night in the late summer of 1983 when they played Waterfront on the radio for the very first time and it blew me away!

  • This album "Sparkle in the Rain" is one of the best rock albums of all time. If you haven't heard it, I encourage you to buy it and crank up your stereo.

    Absolutely incredible.

  • Does anyone hear the subliminal "fuck" at 0:18-0:19? I had this album on vinyl and it was so clear to me.

  • I love this song. It is probably my favorite out of all of Simple Minds music.

  • not the best but definitely one of my fondest memories of the 80's

  • The best rock song ever recorded.

  • THE BEST MUSIC THE BEST TIME! GIVE ME BACK EVERYTHING!!!

  • Here was a band that tapped into the new medium. Where the content nealy spoke to an avengellical upheaveal. their songs were New Age exaultation, without the message. Unfortunately that was also their downfall. No Message!? Where would they go with this exaulting sound? Still. LOVE THEM FOR THIER TIME!

  • @240ups ??? I was wondering if you coyl reword your comment, it makes no sense as is, but I want to understand your meaning.

  • Sparkle in the Rain is one of the most emotional and aggressive rock albums ever! Speed Your Love to Me is the pinnacle of the album!!

  • @iliveinthe past: I doubt if we ever meet and we're worlds apart, but I really dig your comment. This song indeed brings back those memories of golden days since long gone by, when we were really free or felt like it, and of a beautiful sunlight lighting up all existence for a day - and meeting her - the awesome love we felt for that very particular, very special and oh so beautiful woman that took us by the hand and showed us miracles and new gold dreams.

  • great vid

  • Great after all these years

  • Simple Minds are brilliant and in the 80's they made music that went beyond any pop-rock band EVER did, even today. Today's pop music is such shit. Simple Minds were accessible but never boring and always innovative.

  • An amazing song from one of the most amazing albums ever made.

  • Bono you thief.

  • run till we come run till we be ..... i love this song

  • 3 people don't like this is video WTF

  • damn! what a great song! please pay attention on the bass and guitar lines,

    amazing band

  • I love simple minds and all songs

  • Saw SM back in 83 at Roskilde. Best concert ever !!!

Love them still. Have got all there albums ...

  • Feckin Brilliant

  • I saw SM in Paris in June 1989... I have never forgot this marvelous concert :-)

  • @djuste2007 i was in Paris in june 2010 Bataclan :-)

  • This is my all time favorite song by them. I bought the 2 disc set "The Very Best of SImple Minds" and I loved it. It's unfortunate that they're remembered only for that song on "The Breakfast Club"

  • To everyone born in the late 60's or early 70's like me : This period of time in our lives will NEVER be forgotten..we were 15 at this time and were so lucky to hear such good groups..now we are around 40 but still SHIVER when watching this !

  • @BorlandRIP7 You couldn't be more right...born in '64, this music was my school years, at the top of the volume, this one is definitely an 'eleven'

  • Sparkle in the rain, best album ever!

  • come on wake up and smell the roses this was fanfuckintastic music for its time the band were that good i saw them 11 times during the 80s they make you glad u listen to music and they deserved much more than they got long live jim and the boys

  • @allydom11 you said "fantastic music for its time" are you implying there that this song sounds dated at all? Stil sounds great to me apart from the "la la la la la la" bit after the chorus, but an awesome song and Id take this over 99% of the latest music.

  • they are just great - nice music! :)

  • I was thinking of this song today. Love it! Also love the comment below, goes well with the song :)

  • sanctifyyourself Cheers! > Faster ! Faster ! till the need for speed is overwhelmed by the fear ...of death !

  • I wish I could fathom out what derek is playing...genius. Rest in peace Kirsty.

  • top drawer from kerr and co.

  • quel groupe génial, des incontournables plus qu'indispensables !!!

  • 12" version is ace

  • genios!!!

  • Simple Minds where are you now? I love you

  • This is a great song.

  • la mia mente viaggia,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  • Best song ever!

  • son i migliori.. emozionanti.. solo loro sanno craere certe atmosfere...

  • Very nice video clip very nice A+++++

  • I was 14 and now i'm 41 ..so many "souvenirs" back then....

  • just my imagination

    you go to my head

    with the flames that go

    higher and higher and higher!

    wow....great stuff

  • So great !!!!! One of their best songs :)

  • This is dedicated to my best friend Lalla, who died on Sunday, 11th of April 2010. With this song we had the best time friends can have in their lifetime. I will love you forever, Lallina adorata.

  • @rfalletti

    Mi dispiace tanto.

Un abbraccio a te e una preghiera per la tua amata amica.

Grazie per il video. Avrei voluto vederlo 25 anni fa, quando ero innamorata persa di Jim Kerr :-))

  • Simple minds is a great band. They are playing at some rock festivals in europe I would like to see them in Denmark. They never play in the US because they are not pumping out the hits. They just play great music '......And the Band plays on!!!

  • Joyous - that's the only way I can describe this great song.

  • Wild song! Always loved it. Didn't realise there was a video to it!

  • Great song from a great band!

  • Fantastic track from the great Album Sparkle in the rain.

  • As to why this wasn't a huge hit in the States I'll never know.

  • One of the best to dance, drive and have all kinds of fun too songs.... So many memories and still a wicked tune.

  • Superior music from a superior musical decade!

  • so much promise

  • My personal favourite among so many excellent songs in this album ( Sparkle in the Rain ).Wild passion and strong emotions

  • This song reminds me when I was a teenager cruising on a boat on Lake Erie on hot a July night, dreaming of meeting a girl and falling in love, I was such romantic back then. it was nice to daydream!

  • From the both sides of the ocean, we had the same feeling while listening to this fantastic song, Alain from France ;-)

  • Cheers to that! I used to play this song every Sunday night on my way to College after visiting home. I played it full blast.

  • @iliveinthepast I was in the military away from my girl... dreaming of when I would be with her again

  • @iliveinthepast

Nothing bad there man....I drove around in my GTI here thinking the same thing....

Too bad lots of us lost that romaticsicim (spl) growing older.

It IS nice to look bad though...sorry fo rthe sappy reply.

  • @BostonFastJack

    Hey BostonFast Jack,

No need to apologize for being honest... I do agree though, we do lose our romanticism once we get older.. It's a shame.

  • @iliveinthepast great comment my friend...you should see me how much i was daydreaming back then!

  • @suprematismus ...Thanks, I never give up on the dreams!

  • @iliveinthepast Hope you met her... eventually!

  • @MrAmadaeus I thought I did, but love is like the morning fog.... it slowly burns away and your left with the reality of the day.

  • @iliveinthepast - Yes, this was a theme for infatuation with a girl when I was a teenager. Thing is, this still sounds great today. A classic.

  • my favorite band of the 80s, class song.

  • I love the drums on this, it never gets old

  • I think this song just restored some of my faith in humanity.

  • That's a normal reaction to SM's music :)

  • Magic

  • LOVE IT!!!

  • my favorite song all time..

    17 december 013 TILBURG PRESENT!

next saterday HMH Amsterdam... have fuN!

  • In the 90s it was Oasis v Blur

and in the 80s it was U2 v Simple Minds...

Yeah the 80s won hands down...

  • and simple minds won hands down

  • @Tallpaddy

    In the 80's

    U2 vs Simple Minds?

It was more Wham vs. Duran Duran, Duran vs. Spandau Ballet, Depeche Mode vs. all, Cure vs. Wham/George Michael, or Wham vs. Tears For Fears and so on. In the early 80's no one want to hear U2 and in the mid 80s I never heard of a fight between U2 and Simple Minds!

You can't compare little BritPop shit (Oasis, Blur) with giants like Simple Minds and U2!

  • In the 80s U2 and Simple Minds achieved mega band status- U2 released War- The Unforgettable Fire and their biggest ever album The Joshua Tree.

Simple Minds released New Gold's Dream- Once Upon a Time and Street Fighting Years.

Both Bands were doing 80,000 stadia concerts.

There was no fight between U2 and Simple Minds- both competing to be the biggest in the World- Yeah even bigger than the examples you quoted..

    Spandau/ Wham/ Cure/ Tears for Fears?

    - U2 and Simple Minds ruled the World..

  • paddy you are right on a lot of things there ! except one maybe the joshua tree sold more but new gold dream 81 82 83 84 is the master of these 2 seminal albums !! happy new year

  • @sweetassugar69 - yeah l agree simple minds shaded it in the 80s with new gold dream...

after street fighting years which was my favourite, simple minds bombed at the start of the 90s with their album real life...

in the 90s u2 gave us achtung baby and as they say the rest is history...

    happy new year to u2...

  • Oasis were shit. Not blur though. They started off shit but by 97 they were making some great music.

  • A lovely gold disc spinning in my head

  • simply classic! never gets old...

  • Played this over and over and over in the 80s!!

  • In 1989 I attended the infamous MECC concert in Maastricht where Jim fell off the stage, cut his head, had to be stitched, promotor of the show told the crowd to go home, crowd refused to go, Jim came back, stitches and all in his forehead, blood on his shirt and played fot 2 more hours!

  • FANTASTICI!

  • It's all about that driving, relentless beat. Great song.

  • Another brilliant song from an amazing band. Love Jim Kerr's voice, style and dance moves. Damn he was cute and sexy. Had a major crush on him in the 80's, watching this clip now I know why!

  • The Best =)

    Grr Patsy Kensit =(

  • genial! jim , tu es super!!

  • makes you glad to be alive.

  • hear hear !!!!!!!

  • How did this not make it onto their "Glittering Prize 1981-1992" Best-Of? It beats the hell out of several other songs on that album.

  • I think it did. 3rd last track on my copy of it...

  • It's the rage song!

wow, this reminds me of my early childhood.

  • WOW

    Se la dedico a ella..

    Espero que le guste ;D

  • This is the 'Simple Minds' I really love!

  • favourite song by them :):):)

  • Live better than alive and kicking..........!!!

  • I Love!

    I live!!

  • what a incredible band!!!!

  • rate ++++++on rage theme and openings credits

  • This was always my favorite Simple Minds song, but the 12" version I had is my favorite version. Any other version of the song is too short - the song is way too good to last only 4:08!

  • Couldn't agree more with "HooperWest"...we were very fortunate to see SM in such a small venue (throughout the US & Canada) at that point in their career(s). The shows were magical... they were perfectionists who were very loyal to their fans!!

  • Fire from a flame of you....FIRE!!!!!

  • 80s was the best but nows cool cuz all

the 80s bands now have electric guitars

so its synth pop with a more rockier sound so its in a way better example

    a-ha live

  • jim kerrs voice is brilliant in this record !! it's like an extra instrument on this record !! what a band !!

  • The 80's !!!!!!!!! such a great time for music

  • roll on December,

  • I saw them @ Massey Hall in Toronto, one of the best 2500 seat Concert Halls in the World, two nights in a row and this song was one of the best live performances I have ever seen and even thought it was ovver 20 years ago it seems like yesterday, Love LIVE THE SIMPLE MINDS!

  • A lot of Simple Minds stuff didn't chart all that high when it was released in the UK. That must be because they were simply years ahead of their time. There can be no other reason for it when you listen to this.

  • Love this song!!!!

  • InSalinity...because they're too busy playing garbage today that's passed off as "good music".

Plain and simple...what you hear today sucks.

Long live the 80's!! Long live Simple Minds!!

  • Man!! Why does this not get air-time any more!!! What a fkn awesome song.

Derek Forbes was such a huge part of the musical dynamic. He played bass melodies right out in front like a lead - on some albums like New Gold Dream and Sons and Fascination it was almost like the songs were written around his killer lines.

  • But, already by Sparkle in the Rain, his lines were being pushed into the back as this 'wall of sound' was becoming the new phase of SM dynamics.

I do wish that bass driven sound had remained, but they went on to write many great songs.

Their latest work, Graffiti Soul, is called by some a 'return to form' - I think that actually means a return to bass!! Some excellent bass lines once again on the new album. Love it! Love SM!!

  • I love this song

  • q temazo dios...

  • You can tell that the director was inspired by Tarkovsky's Solaris.

  • i <3 rage :D

  • I wonder how many Australians associate this track with massive hangovers because of its use on the 'Rage' closer?

    Top stuff all the same.

  • just my imagination--------speed ur luv...

    wot an awesome track....

remember seeing them at the 30 year wembley show--wot a gig--tonite we play all the hits and oh boy did they do just dat inc this fab track--its waz heavenly

  • forbes bass essential to s.m...

  • how come derek forbes is some vids then its malcom foster,is it just the way they were released.

  • Forbes-79-85. Giblin-85-90 Foster-91-95 Then Forbes came back in 1998,then went away again. Then the whole band kind of went down a black hole....now they are back and some obscure guy in the background is playing the bass. Its NOT Derek Forbes though, because he sounds good. The single is good, but trust me thats not Big Dan.

  • One of my very favorite driving records ever!

Still New Gold Dream is my #1 though.

  • Agreed! Love NGD.
