Ravan is incorrect, it should be Ravana and is known as Ravana Brahma,because of his unparalelled knowledge of Sanskrit which is believed the language of communication of higher SELF and what we are hearing is matches what is believed and he is almost equallent of Bramha, because of his arrogance and ego, he stayed where he was and finally killed by GOD himself as he requested him in his previous birth.

In some parts of India especially south people worship him because of his knowledge.

Ravan was a great devotee of Mahadev- no doubt about that, but he was also a fool because he did not seek the proper boon from Mahadev. He sought temporary materialistic pleasures and power rather than everlasting peace and salvation. Mahadev would have easily guided Ravan to peace & salvation if the latter had asked Him for it. Ravan invited his own doom because he became so arrogant that he even failed to recognize who Hanuman who was (Mahadev's incarnation) and disrespected Him.

A message which many dont understand. One may be the greatest devotee of God but once he becomes arrogant and thinks he can do whatever he wishes, i.e., if his karma is not in accordance with Dharma and is unrepentant for his deeds he will face the same fate.

Ravana and Kumbhakarna were destined to die at the hands of Lord Vishnu. They were actually Lord Vishnu's gate-keepers named Jaya and Vijaya who had been cursed by some sages to be separated from Vishnu.

They pleaded with Vishnu for forgiveness, and the Lord gave them 2 options -- either be born nine times on earth and live long lives as great persons who would always be remembered with love and veneration,
