Sodium and Water Experiment

I'm sorry; this is a roomful of 18 year-olds doing Chemistry who've never seen a Sodium reaction?! Christ, what would've happened if they'd used a grown-up alkali metal like Potassium or Rubidium?

I first saw this reaction in a science lab when I was about 10, and even then the Sodium was a warm-up act for the Potassium.

we just did this in my chem class the other day and the sodium from the explosion gets on the floor somewhat so you might want to remember to clean it up..or the janitors mop might catch on fire lol.. my teacher used one of those sponge type mops which makes it spark a little.. oh and you might want to wipe it off the table too.. with gloves on and paper towels with water to wipe them..watch your sleeves =)
