  • While Ticheli's arrangement is beautiful, it is just that: his ARRANGEMENT. It is not his song; Shenandoah is an old folk song that has been recorded many times over by various artists.

That being said, I prefer Ticheli's interpretation of the song to most others.

  • Really enjoyed the recording :)

  • @Wilsonman1400 wow ur cool

  • @brashears5 I know

  • I played the sax solo in my high school band and im only in 7th grade

  • @Wilsonman1400 That didn't make sense...

  • Hes amazing hes going to conduct my band on the fall so exited :)

  • At the part when trumpet uses cup mute and support the claranet it sounds like he needs to clear out a spit valve lol

  • wooow they skipped the flute part at the beginning ...

  • I'm learnin' this song rite now.... It's quite tricky... I play base clarinet.:)

  • @trent8002003 The Bass Clarinet part is pretty easy. A bunch of whole notes. I play bari sax and Bass clarinet.

  • Another one??? I've played more of his pieces than I thought. Frank Ticheli is pure genius in his music; absolutely brilliant!!!

  • If you liked this piece then go to 'Shenandoah Graduate Choir of New Zealand' and listen to one of the best choral versions of this song.

  • My cousin Frank ticheli.. yes i am related to him!!! my mom is his cousin!!!.....he is an amazing man!!! ti amo cousin frank!!! the ticheli family misses you please come visit us in louisiana soon!!!!

  • we are playing this

  • Go Trumpet!!!! Yhea

  • it was so beautiful. i dont get it when people talk about grade level when it doesn't matter when music for everyone. Now matter what age/grade you are.

  • I'm a Euphonium player from a High School in Oregon and any band can play this song, but its how the individual band members come together to create the big dynamics that sell the piece. I don't care if you are a middle schooler or a college student. These slow songs actually show off all the things a normal band can screw up from tone to articulation. Just keep that in mind.

  • my 8th grade band is playing this.

so are they at an 8th grade level? haha

  • @missbandgeek1 supposedly this song can be played by teenagers too notes&rhythm-wise, but as a slow song it requires a MATURE band to truly bring out the phrasing as well as to NAIL the intonation and tuning of every single freaking chord change ETC ETC ETC...

  • @missbandgeek1 well, this song is considered a high school piece, and my middle school band did it at tmea all state concert festival and the judges were like wow, middle schoolers should not be a ble to play this song, so if your band does it well then no, they would be considered high school level

  • Oh my help me, I'm a horn player. I'm playing this piece for a concert around three more weeks how can I have a nice sound and tone throughout the whole piece with my section? I always can't enter the piece with nice low sound with support how am I suppose to do to train my high notes with nice sound too??? Anyone can help me???

  • BASSOON

  • My school is also playing this song for our Spring concert. I'm so nervous to play the flute solo. Does anyone have any tips that I could use to sound my best during the solo part?

  • I wonder...solo on the beginning or are they just that much together?

  • its actually baritones and horns together

  • @SenatorSparkman it was an alto sax solo xD

  • theyre, together ive played the song, its amazing

  • @SenatorSparkman its baritones/euphoniums and french horn but the bass clarinet, bassoon, and bari sax play there too

  • i play the trombone!

  • LIsten song is so beautiful, I remember playing it my senior year on clarinet. Where ever this song is played you can feel the emotion coming from every insturment. Truely a work of art.

  • Comment removed

  • How did you come up with the flute trio? It's amazing that you can play it like that without too much dissonance.

  • This is a beautiful beautiful piece, when I play it in my high school, I just feel...alive? Im not sure how to explain it, Beautiful

  • I love this song. It makes me almost cry every time we rehearse it in band. I love the part when the saxophone has the melody. with the right vibrato, it can stun you.

  • Im in Marching band (1st year) and in play the trumpet(: I love this song. . Its in my show

  • played this freshman yr!!! always luved the song!!

  • i did a violin trio with this songg.you guys do it alot better thoughhh=) i listen to this about 5 times a day.

  • this is my 10th year in band and out of all the pieces i've ever played (3 or 4 concerts a year, 4 or 5 songs each, you do the math), this is absolutely my favorite song. i still remember the chills i got during the performance, just from the beauty of the piece. its been a few years since i played it but i still remember the flute solo by heart

  • Im on my Moms account but I had to comment. I was in band for over 6 years and this is my favorite timeless peice. It gives you that moment where you can both play and listen to the beautiful music that surrounds you at the same time. It brings tears to my eyes everytime i hear it.

  • When I was a freshman, I played this piece for adjudication. I will never forget that strain of Glory Glory Hallelujah. I almost dropped my flute the first time I heard it clearly

  • So few people notice it when they're listening to this piece, but i think its one of the most awesome parts of this song.

  • Beautiful song, brilliant guy, didnt wanna wash my hand after he shook it lol but i had to.

  • ah :) i remember playing this song for FBA last year, we got superior. i played 2nd clarinet.

  • i played the baritone solo for this song at the nelson band festival a couple weeks ago

    i love playing it

  • damn, me too.

  • me too :D xD

  • baritone players unite! ya i played the euph solo 2 years ago with the calgary stetson show band... unfortunatly since everyone in my section was equally good...they made it a sole :(

  • Wooh! Euph solo, I played it in my Jr, year of highschool!

  • We are playing this next week in the symphonic band I'm in. I'm in 11th grade now and playing the flute. It's a beautiful piece of music

  • Ticheli has been known to write some incredibly sensitive music: Shenandoah, American Elegy, Sanctuary, etc. These pieces are difficult for the moments of exposure, but they're what make the music memorable.

    Man, I miss band.

  • beautifully beautifully donee(:

  • this song is so pretty

  • im in 7th grade and im playing this i love it

  • one of the staple pieces from frank ticheli. i performed this in high school, and it means more to me now considering i attend a university in the shenandoah valley of VA. i really wish he would come down and work with one of our groups on this piece.

  • I played 1st Alto on this piece in my high school's Wind Ensemble. This song was the most beautiful and well put together piece I have ever played.

  • i know! lol. but undertow sounded so bad on the recording! =(

  • A beautiful piece...

I love this song so much. It's haunting, and complex, yet decieving. I find this the easiest piece that we're working on in band, but there are so many little things that, if missed, can make the piece fall apart.

I hope our band can give this song half the amount of justice it deserves, considering we can't do it 1/8 as well as these people are doing.

  • i love this song. my middle school is playing it. i play the french horn and its really great. =)

  • sally! coincedence lol its amazing wen we play lol

  • i played dis song my sophomore year i had the trumpet solo!!!

  • love this song ... :) ended up playing first trumpet freshman year of high school

  • This is the best song Ticheli ever wrote!

  • Have you heard "American Elegy" by Ticheli?.. Awesome

  • played it last year!!

  • Aww, we played this song last year in the freshman band at my high school. I was first chair trumpet... and I loooved this song. Usually I'm up for faster songs, but this one is really beautiful.

  • I love the flute imitation in this piece!

    <3<3<3

  • This song is so difficult for my part (trumpet), but I already love it, and we started it yesterday <3

  • were gonna get it. is it really hard for the trumpet, i mean for the first trumpets?

  • I absolutely love this song. it is very pretty and majecstic sounding. i play flute and play the third part on the flute trio in our symphonic band. we will perform this song, Children's March, and Fairest of the Fair at our state comp in Pearl, MS.

  • our high school band played this last year. our horns couldn't even get the first note out.

  • He came to my community concert band and conducted us :) We had a 5 hr rehearsal that day, then the concert later in the evening. I felt like my mouth was going to fall off (Clarinet) but it was worth it. He's amazing at conducting and a really nice guy. We did American elegy, and Sun Dance.

  • Expressive yet followable, Frank Ticheli happens to conduct almost as well as he composes.

(An American Elegy was, and still is my favorite piece of all time.)

  • Modway high school playes it im in that school i love this song

  • we played this last year..the flute round is harder than you'd think, but it's absolutely wonderfully moving if it's palyed correctly..i love it soooo much.

  • my band played this and i we scored a superior at concert festival with it. and the clarinets are never too loud in this song..i played clarinet for 8 years i would know. i played clarinet in this song. the parts you can hear the clarinets playing are supposed to be played like that.

  • its funny how many mistakes they make but their so unnoticeable. I love it espicially the clairinets even though they were too loud at some parts.

  • i know the true story behind this song. A memeber of the Hill COunrty Middle School Band in Austin Texas, a french horn player, was killed in a car accident. And the head director knew Frank TIcheli and had him write this song for the boy. Everyday in band class they left a chair open for him with his french horn.

  • Actually he arranged the song

  • yeah, it's a traditional folk song

  • that's not right, dude. the song was written during the civil war. google it.

  • i know that. it was written for that. then ARRANGED for the middle schooler that passed away.

  • my band plays it just like that...my dad actually just walked in and was like did somebody record yall playing... its GREAT!

  • we are playing this for district honor band and it is amazing i really love this song

  • I played this my freshman year on flute. Frank Ticheli owns my soul.

  • my school plays this song just like that

  • it must be so cool conducting a song that you wrote and have it be played so beautifully

  • Beautifully arranged with the orchestra performing it excellently. A pity that there were irritating background noises -occasional clicking sounds which downgraded the recording

  • Beautiful song! Played this my sophomore year (I think) in high school...tuba player, baby!

  • i play french horn on this song in the Gulf Coast Concert Band. it is simply one of the most gorgeous songs i've ever played in my career as a musician

  • i have xylophone on this song ..

  • Epic. Truly amazing. I played the first horn part in my freshman year. I loved playing the solo at the end and the duet at the beginning. This song stirs up so much emotion in me. A true masterpiece.

  • omg, cool! we're playing this in my high school concert band now. i love it so much!

  • epic... *tear*

  • Gosh, I love this song. I played it last year in band. First horn part. It was not nearly as good as this, but I absolutely loved it. It's an amazing piece.

  • This song is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have heard. This is in my repertoire of basic, clean, soft, stirring, dramatic, and moving pieces. I have been playing music for about 12 years, and I still cant seem to forget it playing it in high school.

  • I love this song..we played in back in HS my senior year of 04...Euphonium section had it on lock!

  • I'm playing first alto on this, it will be so fun for a concert.

  • This song is just so beautiful. It stirs up such emotion within me. Wonderful.

  • we l played this song.

i had first trupmpet was very fun.

    no really solos... though

  • wow. i love this song ^_^ we played this last year in my highschool concert band :P

  • Finally, a good recording of this song. So many school bands screw it up.

  • dear bamacrzy92

this is the entire euphonium section not just a solo

  • By the way, this is not the MSU concert band. This is the MSU symphony band. I was in the concert band and we didn't play this song.

  • This song really brings back old memories for me. I feel that everyone should put more feelings into their playing, then it would make the music come true.

  • it takes a true musician to play the euphonium solo in the begining of this wonderful piece. tons of props to ticheli and the euph player in this video

  • Frank Ticheli does a stunningly beautiful orchestral arrangement of a song that is most definitely not "his" in any sense of the word but is in fact a 200 year old traditional American song, one of the best known of our folk songs around the world. Ticheli's taste and skill shine through here - but it's sad for me to think how cut off from their own musical inheritance many young people are today.

  • wow as said b4 the composer of the song directing the band playing it is definitely going to turn out gorgeous....

  • beautiful song. i love to listen to it. sadly when my band played it, i had the triangle part. so it wasnt as much fun to play.

  • Our band played this! I was so excited to get 1st Trombone on it too! that part was so much fun!

  • omg. i lov this song. its so beautiful. and when the 3 flutes play their solos. i so pretty. i was a flute player that played one of the solos. not this band though. lol.

  • im a tuba player in alabama and we rocked this song and Blue shades and we owend it this is a proud man yall chek out blue shades

  • How lucky, to have the writer of the song direct it. This is how he pictured it to be played! I loved this song when we played it a few years ago.

  • this was absolutely beautiful

  • My band here in florida played this song and others along with it for a competition. We won first place.

    Love it :)

  • He wouldn't be dead. He was born in 1958

  • in my concert band, i play the saxaphone solo at 2:09.....................only i rock harder

  • Very nice brass. This is what all Ticheli should sound like. In tune, and in tempo. Keep it up.

  • then how is frank ticheli conducting the michigan state unversity, because he wrote the song, he would be over a hundred.

  • LMAO...what? Frank Ticheli is a professor at USC. LMAO....get your facts straight.

  • isnt this song one of the most beautiful of the new century?

were playing it in band and we sound like crap but, i dont know...

  • what do you mean new century? This song was written before the civil war.

  • I want Mr. Tichilli to direct my band! Sniff sniff

  • *sighs* I looove the flute trio solo part it's so pretty...

  • Beautiful, just beautiful.

  • I think everyone is paying attention to the song and dont even realize who the great man conducting it is x3 I love you frank ticheliiii!

  • Ticheli is so underrated. I love his music, they extract so much emotion.

  • My highschool band played this song last year, really nice piece.

  • This is a really nice piece. We played it a couple of years ago in district honor band, and our high school band is going to play it tomorrow at the district competition. We are a small band, and we have two trumpet players switching instruments just for this piece. 1 to euphonium and the other to French horn. Of course we're not nearly as good as MSU.

  • I played 1st horn in this video! Thanks Will for telling me that you posted it. :) Playing for Ticheli was amazing.

  • my middle school wind ensemble and I played this last year, probably the only song ill be able to remember.

  • this song is so awesome :]

  • be sure to check out the performance under my profile. this is one of the best interpretations of it.

  • i checked it out under your profile. it is pretty good. i had a CD 20 years ago. it was performed by some ochestra for movie themes. it had a great performance of this song. i lost it & looked everywhere & has not been able to find it. any ideas?

  • the best i can say is iTunes. theres getting to be a lot of orchestra submiting their cd's on there lately.

  • it sounds so beautiful...our HS band played this last year

  • Our Orchestra Is Playing This Piece I like it the Most out of all of them

  • I Like how Some Of the Words In Your "Sentence" are capitolized, Even if it's Incorrectly Done. awesome.

  • ha ha ha ha ha ha. yeah im just awesome like that

  • My band played this a few years ago and it's still one of my favourite concert band songs I've ever played.
