I have never seen any thing that impacted my life more than this. I am enrolling in the biotechnology program tomorrow. My life just impacted this video, it shattered into a million pieces to be rebuilt on a different trajectory forever. What a powerful talk. Holy Shit. I am amazed by what he just said. I doubt if there will ever be a better talk than right here. This video.
great comment - TED is so powerful - I was so inspired by so many of the talks so much so
i am working slowly towards a career (one day) in technical nutrition) mainly from the william mcdonagh
cradle to cradle design talk... also bill strickland, ray kurzweil & pranav mistry are mind blowing too - if i'm not already preaching to the converted!!! good stuff & hope your the discoverer of the energy microbe of the future!

I'm very surprised. I love each and everyone of this guy's talks but his Wikipedia page isn't too impressive. Oh well, I'm sure it will develop overtime. This guy has great ideas.
Thank you very much for this informative video. The results of all this work will bring about great change on our planet. I just hope we have the wisdom to use these results for the good of humanity.
Oh boy Jurassic park here we come. hopefully we don't bring about our own destruction with this shit. Imagine creating something superior to us and it decides to destroy us.
this kind of technology has major moral implications. It is progressing as lightning speeds, it is time that more people start discussing these implications. In the wrong hands, just like the atom, this has potential to be misused gravely!
An excellent video...five stars. A nice, incite full, easy to follow piece on the impact of genetic and genomic research on our society and footprint on this planet.
Not necessarily! It's the misunderstanding of religion that leads to such statements.
A religion-friendly person, can extract loads of useful stuff from this exceptionally insightful lecture that don't contradict with religion, e.g.: he says people are wasting their time caring about Bush while inevitably he will be gone one day, aka:mind the real stuff. Thats abc of my religion. Yet I still keep the skeptical mind that doesn't BLINDLY believe 100% of what humans (innately fault-prone)claim.

? - - - Respectfully modemmack, that was a very shallow comment. This in no way contradicts religion. Unfortunately Atheist like to use Science to beat up religion - in reality they exist in perfect harmony, depending on how you read religion.
I was at work, and on lunch. My point was that many religious people hate scientific discovery that contradicts widely held dogma. The more we know about the world/universe, the less we depend on faith. Many evangelist, particularly in America have demonized scientist for discovering truths about human evolution. I don't think it's stretch to say that people like Juan Enriquez are hated.
Also the truth of holy scripture can have multiple truths? So if you need slaves you can find the truth in the scriptures that justify it. If you need to take land, and plunder resources you can find that truth from your holy books. After all their non-believing heathens.
The true is what the society deems to be true. The scriptures are just a prop to help justify those truths.
I guess that is one way of looking at faith, albeit a jaded perspective. Your statement holds true for people in the 2nd century, not the 21st. And to your point about scientific discovery - I believe the more we know about the universe, the more faith in a collective 'conciousness' that unifies all living and non-living beings is believable.
Justifying bad behavior with scripture has nothing to do with the scripture - you can justify bad behavior with science too - aka Eugenics and the Nazi's. The Soviets & Germans & Japanese didn't have scripture backing up their bid to take over the world - they had science and nationalism.
What a great talk! The message is to become literate in the life code; grasp the vast amount of information being generated (freely available online at pubmed) and use it for your own knowledge to benefit yourself, your family and indirectly to benefit humanity.
now I'm lost. We need to keep our eye on thye ball, study genomics and that has to do with being wealthy. Only few people in the world study genomic data. Luxembur is not so much into it. Luxembur has greates productivity. I'm lost.
Can anyone explain what's the wisdom of this man's speach? What's his point? I understand resequencing DNA, finding medicine that works by looking at genetic material. Then I don't get the part about who reads genetic data and I don't get the part how it fits into wealth? what are we supposed to be doing now, following genetic material data and accumulating money? I'm not trying to be hostile I am saying I don't understand. Anyone, plz...
There is a law of gravity, right? Meaning if you jump off a cliff, you will most likely die (given the right hight, and right impact). There are also laws of life that we should not mess with. Sure, understand life, but don't mess with it. God is the author of all these things, and He is the only one who can save. Your own ability to comprehend facts, data, etc... who did all that come from? Just saying, man... artists don't like it when people mess with their artwork.
Perhaps a hollow human sustaining interstellar craft that can reproduce.
In a dark mind a life form that bursts from your chest and has acid for blood.
There are microbes that have defined what it is to be human for quite some times and if a few people decided to redefine that, then the entire definition of human culture could change quickly.
I don't think people understand what a crossroads we are at.
Things a bit closer would be energy and sustainable societies and medical cures that truly cure. That bacteria could live forever because it can repair it's genes.
I am pointing out how far this can go. If you could bake anything organic and cure any condition and make energy out of anything would you be rich?
Well, it is talk like this that basically describes on a scale why "Empires Rise and Fall". If we unite and go out into space, we will just simply scatter once more and divide. If we remain on this planet, the EU will divide probably. However, even so, his talk of "experimentation" is dangersou, such as with the bird and the wings. Better not play "God" still.
It really, truly, fucking incredibly was! I am not from a English speaking country, but I've seen so many English films, series and this kind of stuff, that I sometimes think in English. The thing is, although I watch Ted's posted videos a lot, I've not completely understand all the 'big' talk in this video, but the gross I got: it was truly awesome! Best TED presentation ever (even better then Burt Rutan's one)!
Revolutionary.. not because some of those findings he's talking about are just 2 years old, but what would be the results of these research in another few years. Not sure our world is ready to accept even a fraction of it. Hopefully some buddhist or secular country would facilitate further research in these fields.
The future is in the code, as well as understanding the past, I fear it will be controlled by the wrong people though.

if you cured aids, cancer, aging, etc.. how much do you think your hourly rate would be?
or what if you could turn an apple into a data processor? how much would you make then?
so i think he is saying that genomics is an important driver of things to come in the near future...
that's just my guess anywho.
