I love cj2a jeeps!! I have a 1949 that's been in the family for at least 40 years. it is currently in the bushes sporting a plywood roof and a hole in the hood for a hydraulic pump for the plow. haha . your jeep is awesome
yeah, the bench seat only lasted a few days, maybe a week. Then i made new cushions for the seat frames :) I think this was actually a few days after i got it running for the first time in 2006 i think. My buddy adam there was driving it, and i don't think he understood that the engine red lines at 4000 or less :) but it survived his driving styles.
This engine is out of a military generator. The one i got it with had a broken rod
He was used to driving a 5spd jetta, which is obviously completely different then driving a 3spd 46 willys. The way the shifter feels, the way the clutch works, and how its geared in comparison is nothing like driving a 4cyl import car. So he actually did ok considering. The willys is more like driving a tractor, and he wasn't used to it yet.
@tommartyn a willys is nothing like driving a tractor, and when your rpm's are as high as they were here its time to shift, i dont care what your used to driving
Sorry my friend, but driving a CJ-2A compared to driving a 91 Jetta, is like driving a tractor compared to a car. Because of many factors. the standard 3 speed shift pattern, non syncronized 1st, the insanely short gearing (don't even need to use the gas to start out in 1st) But adam wasn't used to any of that. Jetta's redline at 6K rpm, the go-devil? Probably 4K, he wasn't used to how the engine made power, so he reved it as high as he would his jetta, which he drives well.
Also he's not the kind of person who spends alot of time driving, or working on different vehicles. AND, he had only been on the thing for about 10 seconds before i started filming. it was right after i put that engine in there, and he never drove it before. But believe me, when the rpm's went way to high that one time, i stopped him, and told him it was a very low RPM engine. After about 10 minutes he was ok at driving the thing. Its just completely unlike any other car
???? False comment. Its running 100 Percent perfect in this video. Not missing, or stuttering, or anything at all! Just perfect every single cylinder firing perfectly every single time. and the carb being very well adjusted too. the only thing i can imagine you are talking about is when he is tapping the gas pedal all the way down very quickly, and it revs high each time. But thats just from the movement of his foot.
yeah, as long as i have enough property, i'm sure i'll always keep it. its hard to beat a vehicle like this. is half tractor, half truck. and pretty much anything you could ever want a romping vehicle to be! the thing rocks!
Man, there are dozens of beater CJ-2A's for sale all day long on eBay, most of them looking like this one. There is no need to worry about running out just yet! Best bet is to find someone who spend a pile restoring one, as they are worth maybe half what they cost to restore. I have a '48 that someone dropped a small block into. What a fright pig that was when I got it. We call it the antichrist.
yeah, cooler by far. we normally keep the rpms WAY lower then this. this was adams first time driving it, and i don't think he got the whole situation. currently the clutch is stuck together, and you have to start it in gear, and then shift with the syncronizers. still goes through alot of stuff though!
Did you know that CJ-3B style willys jeeps were still being made in japan until '98 or so? They were under licence from willy originally, and i guess they just kept paying a little money to each company who bought the Willys jeeps rights. They were made by Mitsubishi. I bet they kept using the CV joints in the front axle's like the CJ-2a's and all. Japanese compan's were down with the CV's. Not the stupid clunking U-Joints at the wheels... Man i hate that.
Yea, Only the mitsubishi's didnt have the slat grilles. Atleast not all of them. The slats went horizontally. Mahindra & Mahindra of India made or still makes willys 'replicas' under license. Years ago they had a CJ4 on ebay. It was down to the bones though. Still had the skirted fenders and the rounded CJ5 hood. No seats or windshield. Very interesting to find.
There is a CJ-4, look it up :) what looks almost identical to a CJ-5 front end, and the rest is just a CJ-3B pretty much. They did construct one or 2.
Its possibly on its 3'rd go devil :) the one that was blown when i got it had a little metal plate on it, saying it was an engine that was rebuilt in 58, or 54 or something. then i threw this one off the military generator. And its a great engine.
Is there a part 1 to this awesome madness? Maybe give this guy a rev limiter next time :)

you guys need to get a fourwheeler instead of tearing up that poor old jeep, although the willys is cooler any day.
