there will be more riots like this when peoples money runs out and as people get unemployed and nz is sold to china just watch as the cops dress up as students to incite riots if it hasent happen yet it will.
the cops are not for us but for themselves and eventually will beat people up so much that they will kill them
The New World Order is coming riots will be everywhere here cop incited riots
cops are evil they reword statements they hate students clearly shown again and again they nazis
@burninghalls You my friend, are too fucking stupid and paranoid that there are absolutely, no words that could describe just how dumb you are. Not ALL cops are evil nazi's, the world will not turn to shit you moron
@184crowley you stupid fuckhead stop replying to my old comments you idiot i posted this years ago im so sick and tired of fucken retards on here who give me shit for my old as comments yes not all cops are evil but then again your probly a fuckentv watcher you beleive what you see on tv everyday and follow it like it was words sent down from the lord himself . this world is a joke christianity is for money corporations dont care about you and they are the true rullers of the world.
@burninghalls That goes without saying, im a realist/athiest, I understand what's on tv and what's around me. I don't believe 95% of the shit I see in the media. I doubt you havnt changed much in 7 months rather than 'years'.
@184crowley how can you even say that when you don't know me. your judging a book by its cover. If you have nothing nice to ever say to me don't say anything at all. just leave me alone. You can't just judge people from a comment no matter how ridiculous it may be that makes you a troll
fucking hell , i was working on this street for mercury energy that night, it was the night when the cheapest car came to dunedin , it was kinda race, every car was value less thn $500. , i worked on this street 4 days, fucking all students, love them , very very nice people, i miss dunedin alot, nice place to live, GO OTAGO GO ,
n nothing seriouse they was just enjoying lol drunk students, fun, they gonna remember it forever their life, god bless miss you dunaz
kia ora just some support for the cuz- i wasn't there but i'm thinking the police presence brought up some bad feelings and this is how he reacted. He didn't throw bottles, he didn't use violence. I know the tikanga is as is- he knows this too. He would go back and change it, has learned a huge lesson, and also opened a door for us to have this korero on the tikanga behind wero. There are many elements to this, but this is what arose in him this night. The police tend to do this to me too.
just remember ur only young once, uni's all about getting drunk, laid and convicted of something... and some kind of meaningless qualification at the end.... Ernest Rutherford (split the atom) was a canterbury man, booyah ps. what makes you think we need more wankers like you anyhow?
This is totally fucked up! Many people could have been hurt (probably were with all those broken glasses) and even killed!! U are bringing a very bad name not only to yourselves but also the university, the city, and even your country! I cannot believe how fucked up new zealand is, I didnt know till I saw this video! I was thinking of going on exchange to Otago, not anymore.DONT THINK I WOULD BE SAFE IN SUCH AN ENVIRONMENT where UNIVERSITY STUDENTS DONT THINK!l
lmao no one gets killed... its just part of the culture here. u can't judge what u don't understand. we're still the most peaceful country in the world for 2009 haha.
of course they dont think, they're all wasted lol. anyway, it's only this bad on undie 500 and ur perfectly safe if u stay at home, u dont have to go out. but man it's such a fun and crazy night haha.. you stay away from the fires and run when the riot polive charge, then you're all good
soularsystematicz you sound like the puhi of the tribe, incase u wonder yes im certain in using the right term, well maybe not you seem to stupid to have any rank
lmfao. why don't you just retreat into the bush and give up the fish n chips and pies if you wanna be truely maori. i really love how in your comments you used what you thought were words that made you seem more articulate when they were actually rather misused ... COOL DUDE.
i read over the past comments, and the key thing here is not culture or any other stupid excuse, maybe one could blame alcohol for a moment of stupidity, but to try and justify it like it was OK, that ones actions in the light of day can be justified makes me laugh, i thought the wero was just a moment of stupidity but im sorry to see its just that the individual in question is just plane stupid (when he's drunk and clearly when he's not as well)
i think we should all consider the effects of young lion cub semen on the human brain...i often extract semen from young lion cubs and i think the simple fact is it just tastes so god damn good !!!
lets think about that before we start talking about alcoholism and tapu...its all bullshit
cuzzy you fucked up and im sure you can see why everyone is pissed off. we all make mistakes bro but you have to make this right. public apology to the whanau at the university and down at araiteuru is the least you can do cuzzy
I agree! It's just because you defended your actions that you have received so much slack. If you admitted that it was just a drunken mistake everyone would probably empathise with you.
Oh, bro. Everyone has their opinions like everyone has an asshole. I aint tryna defend shit, but I'm keen to keep things in perspective. Now, what follows isn't a defense, nor an excuse, but it is something to possibly think about. If you roll in Maori circles, then you'll be aware of the idea of Maori carrying a psyche which can be very much inclusive of Tall Poppy Syndrome. Kinda fits? In hindsight, I wouldn't have done it, purely because of the fucken coverage. Ae ra, dumb moment, ne. I know.
Actually, you are trying to defend yourself. Unsuccesfully. And you have been using excuses through this whole debate. You do realise Tall poppy sydrome is where people who have genuine merit are criticised or resented because of their achievements. There is no merit in a drunken Wero to a police line up. So no it does not 'kind of fits'. But its good that you are now acknowleding that it was a dumb thing to do. Ka pai.
Lol. E hoa, you've got tall poppy syndrome written all over you. I love the condescension, it's really quite mature, my cuzz. Now, when you googled tps (because lets face it, you've quoted it word for word lol), if you read on you would have seen that chopping someone else down for the sake of asserting ones importance. Now, you can show your disaaproval, and I completely understand that on one level, no way do expect merit or credit lol, but I aint gonna take shit for something that aint there
There is nothing "tall poppy" about me. The reason I looked it up was because the context you put it in didn't fit, and it still doesn't, perhaps there was another meaning for it. There is nothing important about me and there is no way I am trying to elevate myself above you LOL. Thats funny though.
Well, sometimes when I'm on a roll I just expect people to understand where I'm coming from, because I feel it's so clear in my head... The relevance of the 'pohiri' at night comment was about becoming so entrenched in this idea where we must uphold traditions like allowing pohiri at night. I mean, it's subject to opinon and debate, hard. The point is that we can be pretty sensitive about our culture and language at times. And considering the supression and opression te iwi Maori have
i can t understand you?, i hope your tirade sounds more reasonable in person, becase you write like a complete idiot. dont quit the day job, thats if you even have one?
suffered, it's very much understandable. More or less, taking 'everything' (history, land, culture and treatment related) into account, we've been cornered insofar that we feel it's the only way our culture will survive, as dramatic as that sounds.
Take tuarua: bey, you can undermine or dismiss my korero all you bloody like. Maybe you'll find a man to loosen up your attitude. Big ups for your keenness to protect the culture, but suck my ass with the condescensionial bullsheet
maybe if you wrote in maori i would be able to understand you better, but then i suspect you cant write in maori, because that would suggest you have a brain, your crazy ideas go against my thoughts around tino rangatiratanga, but i guess stupidity knows no bounds, or maybe "stupid is as stupid sounds".
Want to know why you shouldn't drink? Alcahols a bloody poison bey, and therefore that in self is choosing to cause harm to your self. What does that mean? It means that you're purposefully abusing your mauri, of which has made it's way to you from those who have walked before you. You understand yet, miss high and mighty? How many people do ka mate when they're pissed? To you, what sounds more "tapu", a haka about death or a challenge to see if you come with peace or fury?
"of which has made it's way to you from those who have walked before you" man your whakapapa must be full of monkeys, if you are the result of the inprovements through the generations, you ask how many ppl do a haka while pissed, well how many ppl drive while pissed? both are stupid!
The coverage leaves it there for all to see. Do you walk this earth without sin or shit that you get away with? (Rhetorical question, before you try to answer that, cuzzi). Im from this fucken community. I've been talked to about it, but those that are wise and a bit older, aren't jumping the gun tryna take a stab. I've been given shit, yeah, but I can take that. If you look into something too much without really knowing the situation, or if you can't put things into perspective and ride
a wave with a little bit of objectivity, then you become vulnerable to seeing bullshit that isn't really there.
And one more thing: I'll say this to anyone who's from here or is going to varsity here, or whatever. II'm more than prepared to meet and korero. Now, this sounds pretty offensive, but it portrays the message I want to give - If you're not gonna put up and be prepared to talk? Shut up!
Bro, I don't seek yours or anyone elses approval. People have said shit to me, but nothing of which compares to the eatassness shit I've read on here. For me, it's a principle thing, whereby I want some of these motherfuckers to actually break it down, or if you're from here, say it to my fucken face, man! Insetad of the continual kaka that gets flung back and forth on here, because so many cats are addicated to argueing, mainly because if you degrade another, the ego likes to think that
One more thing. Your dialogue seems to be innudated with words that are perhaps beyond your comprehension? Well thats what it reads like anyway. Perhaps you should take heed to the advice, or at least some criticisms that have been brought to the table by some Māori in here. These are your own people expressing their dissapointment, your OWN people. That has got to have at least some importance. Hei kona bro, Goodluck.
Oh, and one other thing cuzzi, if you think the kupu I use are "beyond my comprehension", then how about we have a korero on the waea? I'm more than happy to do so, co. I can ring you if you like. Just an idea. Be interesting to see if you've got those same balls on the phone, as opposed to having this computer as in intervening factor between whakaaro and korero. Be far more interesting and would flow easier kei runga i te waea. ChUrA bAy!!
it's superior than the person. And I should also add, when I say "say it to my face", it aint gonna turn into a scrap, that's not the point of talking. The points to whakawhiti, and allow a motherfucker to explain and get it all out.
I'm disgusted and ashamed to be Maori and a student here at the University of Otago. That our tupuna have instilled so much matauranaga, our reo, tikanga and kawa yet people like you think its ok to use one of our most tapu of protocol the wero as a drunken way of expression. We may not know the story but the events on Castle Street were ridiculous and I thought Maori were smart enough not to get involved I guess you are not one of them
Tru eah you wanna bring my mum into this i dont know you and vice versa but you got alot to say on the flipside of this situation alot of smack talking too are you a internet tough maoriboy who hides behind the keypad or do you wanna come out from behind ya screen and man up? Im keen BRO? Holla at ya MAORI cazzz!!!
that is disgusting. trying to put haka at 21st's at the same level as a wero? you can try and defend this guy all you want but what he did was wrong. wero have an element of tapu far higher than that of the haka. yes te reo is the core of our culture but its used everyday. is the wero? shame on you and shame on him. Pouri atu!!
Ae ae you told that buster soularsystematics i think hez whakamaa now coz he aint got shit to say, he def dont know what the hell hez saying. Mauri tu,Mauri ora
Fuck off, ea! You're generalizing wayyyyyyyy too much. Certain haka have different meaning behind them, so they can't be categorized into one genre as you're trying to imply. If haka are to be done before war, as some were used, then it's importance becomes greater than a wero, which is laying out the challenge, or showing disapproval. And the reason why wero isn't used as commonly is because it's for a rare occassion, not because it's more "tapu" lol. AND, wero isn't an art as common as haka
And it's a fucken piss take, bay! There were a whole bunch of Maori there cracking up. You wouldn't know that, cause' you weren't there, you whakaputa mohio lol
oh man im sooooooo SORRY!!! i guess you had to be there to apreciate the bullshit? if i had been there i would have been on the floor pissing my pants with laughter because it was so funny how you picked up a broom stick. stood there in front of the police. tried to do a wero. and i say try. maybe il let it go coz you could hardly call that shuffle a wero. good one souljah!
Patronize all you like, ea. If you wanna talk about tikanga and and whathave you, get at me. And this "other factor" bullshit, you can disregard it all you like. But, it holds relevance.
You and your hater ass attitude aint gonna get you nowhere, buddis.
I also love your willingness to discredit, yet actually haven't said anything to do so? What's your argument, tutt? Got you some points as to how this fucken "tapu level" kaka actually fits?
Do you know why we didn't do pohiri at night, i nga wa o mua? Because we couldn't fucken see them, bey.
Now, tapu and noa have their places and are sacret as hell. But it's fucken kupapa using it just for the sake of argument. Step with some actual rationalle, otherwise suck my ass and fuck up.
did i hit a nerve? what you did was way off; piss take or serious. it wasnt the right place or the right time. all you really managed to do was reinforce a stereotype that quite frankly we dont need. your defending yourself, well done you. in your words "you and your (i did nothing wrong) attitude aint gonna get you nowhere". good luck to you, i truly hope one day you wake up. i feel that we are gona go in circles therefore, no more from me.
Restrospectively, would I do it again? Nah, bo. But, have you ever done anything you possibly shouldn't have done? What's unfortunate is that it's for every motherfucker to see lol. The bullshit that pissed me off, is in relation to tapu/noa, ands the consistency of which you're adhering to. We've gone over it, like you say, and as self righteous as this may sound, you're not prepared to listen.
Okay, so; Where do we draw the lines? For example, do you know how many drinking games that we have of which imitate or derive actions from haka, wero, waiata, pukana etc? Fucken heaps there, tutt. It's easy to jump the gun if you don't actually question and look into things. That's what I mean about tall poppy syndrome, we often skip that part of the process and look to point the finger. It's the whole creating a sense of superiority, so that I can tell my mahunga I'm better than 'someone else'
How about you tell us where you would draw the lines. Talking while drunk is not tapu, how the hell are we ment to communicate? Singing? You would never sing a Waiata koroua while drunk, unless you are an outcast! You can't compare these to a wero while drunk. Pukana! SHIT mate, open your eyes wider so they can see your whites, maybe you will get a missus who can teach you a thing or two. Straight up, perhaps you should read a few books or talk to our elders about the significance of the wero...
and see how the mana of your people is being diminished bud. This is my last post. I don't have any more time to argue with you. You were wrong on so many levels, and to think that you did the wero just for pisstake, thats what makes it even worse, there was no cause for it. Idiot. Well pisstake on this, the whole country can look at this now and see you, actually it should be sent to the news, they would have a field day. L8erz
take tuatoru: Tapu/noa vs bastardization/whakaiti. Straight up, the tapu/noa teko does not apply. The consistency and precedence I stem from is that of every day life. The wero had a significant role, but so did everything else, tutt! And many of those things are practiced, still. If you want to be Miss Aotearoa Marry Girl of the year, then good for bloody you. But in oreder to do so, it wouldn't be about not talking Maori when you're drinking, it would be about not drinking full stop!
And, as I thought, you're full of kaha on here but when I propse to korero about it ki runga i te waea, you're not keen. After all the patronizing you've displayed, you obviously consider your self an up there intellectual. If you feel as strongly as you're making out, bloody man up.
Like I say, put the fuck up or suck my ass, you motherfucken eatass.
eah you still going boye!! I called you out to man up and you aint hit me back on the privates hei aha tenei ehoa???? you telling a wahine to man up LOL :)
I see you acknowledged your mistake and that it was you TRYING to do te wero sweetaz your badd we all fuckup now and then but cazzz time to hangup ya jandals and get back to studying whatever it maybe or in your own korero PUT THE FUCK UP OR KISS MY EAST88 ARSE...Cher doy
The reason you got no reply was because it seemed pretty eats, ea. So many motherfuckers reckon they tough on this shit. You gotta be able to give and take, bratha.
So, what do you expect me to do? Do you really wanna scrap? Can't you tell from my taiaha movements that I'm an expert martial artist? bahahhah
Unless you're in this town, fuck up, cause' it'd never happen.
I fail to see the the relevance of pōhiri at night, I mean you learn that at Kohanga. Yeah it was because you couldn't see them, and the point is? Tapu is a force to be reckoned with in Māoridom, and there is nothing at all kupapa about what is being debated here by fellow Māori. Lets just make it clear, just because we believe it was wrong, doesn't make any of us kupapa.
Pssss get fucked BOY must of been you aye you fucking clown doing dat wero now your fucking shamed and trying to save face lets fucken get drunk and be dumb cunts aye hahaha get your rakau readi ehoa staightup im as militant as they come il waste you bitch as solarsystematics faggot punk baldhead reading from a maori language book chump!! TAINUIWAKA
hey nz rookie0077 why call that pakeha trying to do a wero a MAORI your worse than the media and cops who describe every suspect dark skin male as a MAORI,get your facts straight before you come with that shit mate! Ma people would never do something so dis-respectful to my TIKANGA for a dumb cause like undie 500 ,good job ya clowns you all deserved the bash...If id been there and seen that idiot doing that wero i would have pulled out my patu and taken his mahunga off! TAINUIWAKA
that maori doing the haka is a disgrace. Anyone that got pepper sprayed, even on their lawn deserved it. Police gave them plenty of time to leave/go inside and they were contributing to the violence. I laugh how their all about their rights! What about other people rights to peace? Go Police....tear gas next year please.
Yet another who obviously wasn't there. People got their houses raided, mate. Regardless of whether they were 'upsetting the peace'. If you were having a goodtime, you were gonna get stung by the pigheads lol.
18000 uni students and a couple of hundred utter dicks ruin the university's reputation. if you were involved in this then you need to grow up. this was organised criminal activity and those involved delighted in vandalism, and assault. pathetic. GROW UP
Council should just let "young dumb full of cum" Uni Males have a big party. all the females can be shipped off to the North island for us darkie boys to use& abuse
everyone loves undie, u guys commenting love the drama, chin loves the publicity, police love having a chance to wack students, and students just love getting drunk! dunedins a student city, what do you expect! this stuff happens with or without undi having anything to do with it, everyone just needs to chill.
Haha you dumbass, Dunedin isn't a student city anymore, it's become a city of retards. At least half the students in Dunners are useless as and wouldn't make it anywhere else. Have a look at other student cities around the globe and you'll see, how embarrassing you are. Students are supposed to belong to the more cultivated part of society, but those are really at the bottom of it.
Just expell and ban that fucking piece of worthless life from university and ruin his future. He may become aware of how useless he is, when he ends up on benefit or cleaning parks. Police of any other country would tear gas you stupid human trash and beat the shit out of you. Cops here are just too nice and tolerant.
you're a muppet - there is no need to hassle city workers (cleaning parks comment) for one, they are an essential part of any city - second, who are you to call drunk students worthless life or human trash? third, cops here are nice and I wouldnt have it any other way, lest you want a fascist state?
Are you saying that you yourself have never done anything stupid under the influence of alcohol that you regretted? And never done anything just because you were in the 'mob mentality'? Because otherwise BigEarn81 you are illustrating yourself as a hypocrite. I am an Otago uni student, and i went along and had a nice chilled out time. Because I am classed as a student does that make me human trash as you have so righteously labelled the minority of us?
Good way to spend your taxes, cleaning up your own shit just cause you cant handle your piss. Fucking dicks. Time to take your nappies off and grow up.
look at that guy doing a haka. what a fucking RETARD. well done. ya succeeded in making yourselves look like a pack of dickheads.
and ya reckon CHRISTCHURCH has problems??? no wonder they banned the undie 500. DUH. if you all didn't act like such imbred rioting HICKS, maybe you wouldn't need to kiss goodbye to the 500 again.
And you think this is acceptable do you? You and the rest of these neanderthals are giving Otago, and in turn, myself a bad name. And the "hero" doing the haka is just a total wanker! They're mentally unsound if they believe that "authority sucks". Someone has to do it, someone has to clean up after you idiots and try to make sure you don't hurt anyone innocent. It's about time the city did something about this so it won't happen again!
Its one thing to have some mad fun dressing up and painting up cars for a roadie but its another to use "tradition" as an excuse to run riot. To think these guys are future professionals... jaysus...
My mates and I attended this last night sober, as 1st Years, Dunedin born and bred. We chose not to get involved as typical 1st year drunks...People always play up to reputations and traditions, this years Undy 500 was bound to be the same/worse. What else is going to happen when 600 drunk students congregate - they aren't there to observe! It is human nature to rebel and they were there just to create shit... great job getting arrested what a fucken great night... email that to ya Mum.
This is ridiculous, it happens every undie 500, and every year the students blame it on the police presence. It seems that some students like to take advantage of dunedins reliance on the university for its economy, students have more rights in dunedin than locals do. Do you think anyone would put up with this shit if it was in south dunedin? I am an Otago University student, and a Dunedin local, and I do realise that this is a minute proportion of the student population.
Say what you want, but Dunedin would be even more of a crap-hole without the university and its students.
I also know for a fact that the Dunedin police love this stuff, It's their biggest night of the year and they look forward to it (can't say I blame them haha)
It didn't start as a riot. There is no riot and no bottle throwing without police. Perhaps if the police stay out all there would be to clean up the next day would be some couch ash. Let castle street be full of burn holes and ruts, i dont think the students would care. The cost of mobilising riot police is probably more than to patch a hole in the street anyway.
Haha, your actually suggesting the Police are to blame? the Police are mobilised because there is a 600 - 1000 strong crowd lighting fires in the middle of the road, whilst intoxicated, if there has ever been a cause for mobilising the Police, that is it! These little know-it-all university students need to have they're rights stripped from them, and the best way to do that is with the hardend of a batton..
Yes, how dare those wicked policemen do their job. How dare they care about safety, where there is a 15-foot fire close by the Botanic Gardens! How dare they not want to see a whole forest go up in flames! Ooh, those wascawy powicemen!
Under500 idiots. Street fires are not harmless. What would you do if embers got blown into the crowd? - or started a rubbish fire next to a wooden house?
There is something wrong with your head if you throw bottles at people.
If you are living in Castle/Leith/Clyde/Hyde etc. you are probably an outsider. Go back to your corner of the country. You are an extremely unwelcome temporary resident.
Ae, The whole concept of the Undie 500 is great; getting creative, traveling and having a good time with ya mates - but it's those tossers who set out to destroy stuff, cause harm and get messily haurangi that ruin it. To that fulla at the end.. Pōkokohua! Shame on you bro, that's hardcore disrespecting our Maori culture!
He aha ai, bro? Explain to me the disrespect on a literal level. Hit me, cazz. I wanna know.
If anything, it's subjective. If it's about your position on raising the dust and having a go with the police, then it it becomes a debate about actually that and thus it's not a cultural issue.
I think it is shameful that Otago students joined those toddlers from Christchurch to mess up Dunedin. Let them go do their nonsense elsewhere. Awon omo abiko, ako igba. That is one of the repercussions of smacking bill. Parents are no longer able to chastise their children for wrong doings.
Giving Undie500 a second chance was one of the worse idea's ever. You would think that after the Toga parade they would have learnt. Its Meant to be a pub crawl right?? What do you get when 200 or so POOR students from cantebury travel down to go on pub crawl, first of all they have to pay for a piece of s*** car then pay to put gas in it, what makes you think the're going to spend more money in TOWN on alcohol.. Of course they're just going to rage down castle st. Idiots!
I just joined to comment on this. The guy at the end doing the wero, its disgusting to see you do that while you are obviously haurangi for such a dumb cause. Thats straight disrespecting my culture. Obviously you can't be Maori, no Maori would be so dumb. Pokokohua!
"disrespecting my culture". Bay, shut the fuck up - you have no idea what you're talking about. Do you know what the core of the Maori culture is? It's the language. You know how many people talk Maori when they're drunk, like 21sts or other celebrations? Do haka when they're drunk? Sing waiata when they're drunk? So, if you gonna get all morally superior at one and point the finger, how about you have a go at the rest of the Maori population.
Bro, you are the dumb one who is doing the Wero. Do you even know the significance of the Wero? How can you compared the Wero while being drunk, to our language we speak while being drunk? A haka while they are drunk. Tell me what was the purpose of that Wero mate, then tell me what the purpose of a Wero is at a 21st. What was your mindset at the time, and then compare the two. Go on tell me, and then we can see who is "bummaged", you idiot.
Bay, you're missing the fucken point. There's no difference bwtween doing a haka when you're drunk, to speaking Maori when you're drunk, to singing a waiata when you're drunk. Stop glorifying wero beyond their importance. They are on a balanced playing field.
And who the fuck are you to judge, anyway? lol
Moral superiority bullshit is common on this mathafucka! If you don't know what that means, it basically means you're sipping on the haterade lol
You're the one missing the point, and stop swearing fool. A wero is TAPU. Once you understand the nature of a Wero, then perhaps you will understand why so many people are mad at you. And to think that you come on here and try to defend yourself, what a idiot. Glorifying you say!!! I wouldn't be so stupid, I know where I stand on this topic, and what you did was irresponsible and whakaiti. You are comparing the likes of singing and talking to the likes of a Wero??
haha sorry whaea, didn't realise I was subject to that cursing police. A wero is no more tapu than many haka, that's my point. The importance of a wero is to connote a patai or establish ones disaaproval. Yes, it may not have been the smartest thing to do, but hey, it's not deserving of all the bullshit uptight stabs. Because haka and wero bring their own mauri and are often exercised while people are haurangi, it doesn't mean it's right. That's down to perception, BUT the two are'nt too
dissimilar. Waiata and korero aren't ncecessarily less tapu, it's just that they are far more commonly expressed so therefore don't hold as much stigma or percieved tapu. You understand? So, the point lies before us - if you're going to get all high and mighty about one, then stay staunch to your kaupapa and condemn the rest. That's what I don't agree with
But, like you say, kei a koe te tikanga o ou whakaaro. Your opinions are your opinions. All I question are the consistence of principles.
ive just realised. yes he did a 'wero' well tried to anyway, it was pretty stink, his stance was kaka. anyway. hes obviuosly not going to change his belief on the subject. dont know who taught him his tikanga, but they must have been drunk at the time ne? is that the consistency your asking for soular? your trying to down play the wero by bringing in other factors such as talking the reo drunk, singing a waiata drunk. how many people actually agree with you soular? your drunk teachers?
And to think that Wero and TALKING MAORI and SINGING MAORI are on the same level of Tapu, you are as ignorant as some Pākeha. And im entitled to my opinion, you want to do a wero and it makes it online, then you are open for criticism. I find it funny that you try and justify your actions, you say it was a piss take. Way to bastardize our culture bro.
Let me ask you this, do you take food in to the cemetery to take the piss? What about eating in front of a tupapaku? You know you could, and then justify it by saying you just taking the piss.....just a thought.
All of them are a bunch of guidos! why don't they go put their rugby shorts on and ride their long boards out of this town! which would take forever since they can't ride for shit!
Fucking jocks! it's sad that nz is full of beer drinking , rugby loving douchebags who wear tiny queer shorts! and having nothing better to do than be wankers!
It's idiots like this that give other students like myself a bad name. And I can't claim any more that it's a minority that are doing it, at least 50% of the hall I live at were down there at some point, and a crown that large is clearly not a small minority, even if it has been bolstered with out-of-towners.
I'm fucking ashamed of this shit, students should grow up and sort their shit out.
When the media plays it up to be a big event it changes peoples perceptions and makes them aware that it is happening. The perception that trouble could go down draws the crowds and makes the event bigger than it would have otherwise been, especially those who would like their 15minutes of fame. The crowd mentality of 500 drunk young people egging each other on and trying to out do their sister university students at drinking and general vulgar behaviour is bound to be in a downwards spiral.
I was very pro-undie 500 until last night. Watching my fellow students start throwing bottles at the retreating firemen and policemen after the first fire was put out, to seeing one after the other drunken student try and bait the riot police before quickly scampering back to safety, left me feeling numb and disgusted. This is not what Dunedin is or should ever be.
there will be more riots like this when peoples money runs out and as people get unemployed and nz is sold to china just watch as the cops dress up as students to incite riots if it hasent happen yet it will.
the cops are not for us but for themselves and eventually will beat people up so much that they will kill them
The New World Order is coming riots will be everywhere here cop incited riots
cops are evil they reword statements they hate students clearly shown again and again they nazis

kia ora just some support for the cuz- i wasn't there but i'm thinking the police presence brought up some bad feelings and this is how he reacted. He didn't throw bottles, he didn't use violence. I know the tikanga is as is- he knows this too. He would go back and change it, has learned a huge lesson, and also opened a door for us to have this korero on the tikanga behind wero. There are many elements to this, but this is what arose in him this night. The police tend to do this to me too.

themadoboist 2 years ago
i read over the past comments, and the key thing here is not culture or any other stupid excuse, maybe one could blame alcohol for a moment of stupidity, but to try and justify it like it was OK, that ones actions in the light of day can be justified makes me laugh, i thought the wero was just a moment of stupidity but im sorry to see its just that the individual in question is just plane stupid (when he's drunk and clearly when he's not as well)

cuzzy you fucked up and im sure you can see why everyone is pissed off. we all make mistakes bro but you have to make this right. public apology to the whanau at the university and down at araiteuru is the least you can do cuzzy
tommy2cool696969 2 years ago
I agree! It's just because you defended your actions that you have received so much slack. If you admitted that it was just a drunken mistake everyone would probably empathise with you.
iwantasoldier23 2 years ago
I know.
soularsystematicz 2 years ago
Actually, you are trying to defend yourself. Unsuccesfully. And you have been using excuses through this whole debate. You do realise Tall poppy sydrome is where people who have genuine merit are criticised or resented because of their achievements. There is no merit in a drunken Wero to a police line up. So no it does not 'kind of fits'. But its good that you are now acknowleding that it was a dumb thing to do. Ka pai.
Romiromiful 2 years ago
Now, you can show your disaaproval, and I completely understand that on one level, no way do expect merit or credit lol, but I aint gonna take shit for something that aint there
soularsystematicz 2 years ago
There is nothing "tall poppy" about me. The reason I looked it up was because the context you put it in didn't fit, and it still doesn't, perhaps there was another meaning for it. There is nothing important about me and there is no way I am trying to elevate myself above you LOL. Thats funny though.
Romiromiful 2 years ago
Well, sometimes when I'm on a roll I just expect people to understand where I'm coming from, because I feel it's so clear in my head... The relevance of the 'pohiri' at night comment was about becoming so entrenched in this idea where we must uphold traditions like allowing pohiri at night. I mean, it's subject to opinon and debate, hard. The point is that we can be pretty sensitive about our culture and language at times. And considering the supression and opression te iwi Maori have
soularsystematicz 2 years ago
i can t understand you?, i hope your tirade sounds more reasonable in person, becase you write like a complete idiot. dont quit the day job, thats if you even have one?
dragonxxx1111 2 years ago
suffered, it's very much understandable.
Big ups for your keenness to protect the culture, but suck my ass with the condescensionial bullsheet
soularsystematicz 2 years ago
maybe if you wrote in maori i would be able to understand you better, but then i suspect you cant write in maori, because that would suggest you have a brain, your crazy ideas go against my thoughts around tino rangatiratanga, but i guess stupidity knows no bounds, or maybe "stupid is as stupid sounds".
dragonxxx1111 2 years ago
Want to know why you shouldn't drink? Alcahols a bloody poison bey, and therefore that in self is choosing to cause harm to your self. What does that mean? It means that you're purposefully abusing your mauri, of which has made it's way to you from those who have walked before you. You understand yet, miss high and mighty? How many people do ka mate when they're pissed? To you, what sounds more "tapu", a haka about death or a challenge to see if you come with peace or fury?
soularsystematicz 2 years ago
"of which has made it's way to you from those who have walked before you" man your whakapapa must be full of monkeys, if you are the result of the inprovements through the generations, you ask how many ppl do a haka while pissed, well how many ppl drive while pissed? both are stupid!
dragonxxx1111 2 years ago
The coverage leaves it there for all to see. Do you walk this earth without sin or shit that you get away with? (Rhetorical question, before you try to answer that, cuzzi). Im from this fucken community. I've been talked to about it, but those that are wise and a bit older, aren't jumping the gun tryna take a stab. I've been given shit, yeah, but I can take that. If you look into something too much without really knowing the situation, or if you can't put things into perspective and ride
soularsystematicz 2 years ago
a wave with a little bit of objectivity, then you become vulnerable to seeing bullshit that isn't really there.
And one more thing: I'll say this to anyone who's from here or is going to varsity here, or whatever. II'm more than prepared to meet and korero. Now, this sounds pretty offensive, but it portrays the message I want to give - If you're not gonna put up and be prepared to talk? Shut up!
soularsystematicz 2 years ago
Bro, I don't seek yours or anyone elses approval. People have said shit to me, but nothing of which compares to the eatassness shit I've read on here. For me, it's a principle thing, whereby I want some of these motherfuckers to actually break it down, or if you're from here, say it to my fucken face, man! Insetad of the continual kaka that gets flung back and forth on here, because so many cats are addicated to argueing, mainly because if you degrade another, the ego likes to think that
soularsystematicz 2 years ago
One more thing. Your dialogue seems to be innudated with words that are perhaps beyond your comprehension? Well thats what it reads like anyway. Perhaps you should take heed to the advice, or at least some criticisms that have been brought to the table by some Māori in here. These are your own people expressing their dissapointment, your OWN people. That has got to have at least some importance. Hei kona bro, Goodluck.
Romiromiful 2 years ago

We may not know the story but the events on Castle Street were ridiculous and I thought Maori were smart enough not to get involved I guess you are not one of them

32mjonson 2 years ago
that is disgusting. trying to put haka at 21st's at the same level as a wero? you can try and defend this guy all you want but what he did was wrong. wero have an element of tapu far higher than that of the haka. yes te reo is the core of our culture but its used everyday. is the wero? shame on you and shame on him. Pouri atu!!

32mjonson 2 years ago
Fuck off, ea! You're generalizing wayyyyyyyy too much. Certain haka have different meaning behind them, so they can't be categorized into one genre as you're trying to imply. If haka are to be done before war, as some were used, then it's importance becomes greater than a wero, which is laying out the challenge, or showing disapproval. And the reason why wero isn't used as commonly is because it's for a rare occassion, not because it's more "tapu" lol. AND, wero isn't an art as common as haka
soularsystematicz 2 years ago
And it's a fucken piss take, bay! There were a whole bunch of Maori there cracking up. You wouldn't know that, cause' you weren't there, you whakaputa mohio lol

You and your hater ass attitude aint gonna get you nowhere, buddis.
Chura chur!
soularsystematicz 2 years ago
I also love your willingness to discredit, yet actually haven't said anything to do so? What's your argument, tutt? Got you some points as to how this fucken "tapu level" kaka actually fits?
Do you know why we didn't do pohiri at night, i nga wa o mua? Because we couldn't fucken see them, bey.
Now, tapu and noa have their places and are sacret as hell. But it's fucken kupapa using it just for the sake of argument. Step with some actual rationalle, otherwise suck my ass and fuck up.
soularsystematicz 2 years ago
did i hit a nerve? what you did was way off; piss take or serious. it wasnt the right place or the right time. all you really managed to do was reinforce a stereotype that quite frankly we dont need. your defending yourself, well done you. in your words "you and your (i did nothing wrong) attitude aint gonna get you nowhere". good luck to you, i truly hope one day you wake up. i feel that we are gona go in circles therefore, no more from me.
ngarabama 2 years ago
Restrospectively, would I do it again? Nah, bo. But, have you ever done anything you possibly shouldn't have done? What's unfortunate is that it's for every motherfucker to see lol. The bullshit that pissed me off, is in relation to tapu/noa, ands the consistency of which you're adhering to. We've gone over it, like you say, and as self righteous as this may sound, you're not prepared to listen.
soularsystematicz 2 years ago
Okay, so; Where do we draw the lines? For example, do you know how many drinking games that we have of which imitate or derive actions from haka, wero, waiata, pukana etc? Fucken heaps there, tutt. It's easy to jump the gun if you don't actually question and look into things. That's what I mean about tall poppy syndrome, we often skip that part of the process and look to point the finger. It's the whole creating a sense of superiority, so that I can tell my mahunga I'm better than 'someone else'
soularsystematicz 2 years ago
How about you tell us where you would draw the lines. Talking while drunk is not tapu, how the hell are we ment to communicate? Singing? You would never sing a Waiata koroua while drunk, unless you are an outcast! You can't compare these to a wero while drunk. Pukana! SHIT mate, open your eyes wider so they can see your whites, maybe you will get a missus who can teach you a thing or two. Straight up, perhaps you should read a few books or talk to our elders about the significance of the wero...
Romiromiful 2 years ago
and see how the mana of your people is being diminished bud. L8erz
Romiromiful 2 years ago
take tuatoru: Tapu/noa vs bastardization/whakaiti. But in oreder to do so, it wouldn't be about not talking Maori when you're drinking, it would be about not drinking full stop!
soularsystematicz 2 years ago
And, as I thought, you're full of kaha on here but when I propse to korero about it ki runga i te waea, you're not keen. After all the patronizing you've displayed, you obviously consider your self an up there intellectual. If you feel as strongly as you're making out, bloody man up.
Like I say, put the fuck up or suck my ass, you motherfucken eatass.

Jaco352 2 years ago
Its one thing to have some mad fun dressing up and painting up cars for a roadie but its another to use "tradition" as an excuse to run riot. To think these guys are future professionals... jaysus...
BMWPowerNZ 2 years ago
My mates and I attended this last night sober, as 1st Years, Dunedin born and bred. We chose not to get involved as typical 1st year drunks...People always play up to reputations and traditions, this years Undy 500 was bound to be the same/worse. What else is going to happen when 600 drunk students congregate - they aren't there to observe! It is human nature to rebel and they were there just to create shit... great job getting arrested what a fucken great night... email that to ya Mum.
BMWPowerNZ 2 years ago
This is ridiculous, it happens every undie 500, and every year the students blame it on the police presence. It seems that some students like to take advantage of dunedins reliance on the university for its economy, students have more rights in dunedin than locals do. Do you think anyone would put up with this shit if it was in south dunedin? I am an Otago University student, and a Dunedin local, and I do realise that this is a minute proportion of the student population.
1980legend 2 years ago 2
By no means should this event be a reflection of the whole student population of Otago.
A large proportion of people in the riots would not have been from university at all. And those who were are just plain idiots.
robert000ooo 2 years ago 6
hahaha trust people from abbey college to be filming this
robert000ooo 2 years ago 2
Say what you want, but Dunedin would be even more of a crap-hole without the university and its students.
I also know for a fact that the Dunedin police love this stuff, It's their biggest night of the year and they look forward to it (can't say I blame them haha)

It didn't start as a riot. There is no riot and no bottle throwing without police. Perhaps if the police stay out all there would be to clean up the next day would be some couch ash. Let castle street be full of burn holes and ruts, i dont think the students would care. The cost of mobilising riot police is probably more than to patch a hole in the street anyway.
bork55 2 years ago
couldn't of said it better
mattpearson33 2 years ago
Haha, your actually suggesting the Police are to blame? the Police are mobilised because there is a 600 - 1000 strong crowd lighting fires in the middle of the road, whilst intoxicated, if there has ever been a cause for mobilising the Police, that is it! These little know-it-all university students need to have they're rights stripped from them, and the best way to do that is with the hardend of a batton..
thenewtemplars 2 years ago 2
Yes, how dare those wicked policemen do their job. How dare they care about safety, where there is a 15-foot fire close by the Botanic Gardens! How dare they not want to see a whole forest go up in flames! Ooh, those wascawy powicemen!

the guy at the end is what is known as one disrespectful CUNT!! that is a little lost white boy who has lost his way....no Maori would do that

BethHam88 2 years ago 4
Ha yea, drunk people and sports teams other than the All Blacks/Kiwis shouldn't be doing hakas etc. you just look like a skinny white muppet.
samonethousandandone 2 years ago

ToyenyenOtago 2 years ago

Pokokohua!
Romiromiful 2 years ago
"disrespecting my culture". Bay, shut the fuck up - you have no idea what you're talking about. Do you know what the core of the Maori culture is? It's the language. You know how many people talk Maori when they're drunk, like 21sts or other celebrations? Do haka when they're drunk? Sing waiata when they're drunk? So, if you gonna get all morally superior at one and point the finger, how about you have a go at the rest of the Maori population.
Shame. You just bummaged u hater ass beetch. lol
soularsystematicz 2 years ago
Bro, you are the dumb one who is doing the Wero. Do you even know the significance of the Wero? How can you compared the Wero while being drunk, to our language we speak while being drunk? A haka while they are drunk. Tell me what was the purpose of that Wero mate, then tell me what the purpose of a Wero is at a 21st. What was your mindset at the time, and then compare the two. Go on tell me, and then we can see who is "bummaged", you idiot.
Romiromiful 2 years ago
Shameful aye what apunk that soularsystematics is comparing the 2 i fink hez the 1 bummaged hard now or should i say SHE! LOL
32mjonson 2 years ago
Bay, you're missing the fucken point. There's no difference bwtween doing a haka when you're drunk, to speaking Maori when you're drunk, to singing a waiata when you're drunk. Stop glorifying wero beyond their importance. They are on a balanced playing field.
And who the fuck are you to judge, anyway? lol
Moral superiority bullshit is common on this mathafucka! If you don't know what that means, it basically means you're sipping on the haterade lol
soularsystematicz 2 years ago
You're the one missing the point, and stop swearing fool. A wero is TAPU. Once you understand the nature of a Wero, then perhaps you will understand why so many people are mad at you. And to think that you come on here and try to defend yourself, what a idiot. Glorifying you say!!! I wouldn't be so stupid, I know where I stand on this topic, and what you did was irresponsible and whakaiti. You are comparing the likes of singing and talking to the likes of a Wero??
Romiromiful 2 years ago
haha sorry whaea, didn't realise I was subject to that cursing police. That's down to perception, BUT the two are'nt too
soularsystematicz 2 years ago
All I question are the consistence of principles.
soularsystematicz 2 years ago
ive just realised. yes he did a 'wero' well tried to anyway, it was pretty stink, his stance was kaka. anyway. hes obviuosly not going to change his belief on the subject. dont know who taught him his tikanga, but they must have been drunk at the time ne? is that the consistency your asking for soular? your trying to down play the wero by bringing in other factors such as talking the reo drunk, singing a waiata drunk. how many people actually agree with you soular? your drunk teachers?
ngarabama 2 years ago
And to think that Wero and TALKING MAORI and SINGING MAORI are on the same level of Tapu, you are as ignorant as some Pākeha. And im entitled to my opinion, you want to do a wero and it makes it online, then you are open for criticism. I find it funny that you try and justify your actions, you say it was a piss take. Way to bastardize our culture bro.
Romiromiful 2 years ago
Let me ask you this, do you take food in to the cemetery to take the piss? What about eating in front of a tupapaku? You know you could, and then justify it by saying you just taking the piss.....just a thought.

Oh come on, that shit's out of line, hard.

When student riots occur in the rest of the world there is usually a political background to it or it is related to some sort of movement.
These guys look like d*ckheads (to express myself at a level they might understand).
I hope the cops stick to their 'no diversion' statement.
