  • So great, thanks for sharing this...wonderful...

  • They never played a song the same way twice;most bands wouldn't dare take "a chance like that".The Airplane had confidence in themselves and each other, they knew if they got "too far-out" someone would bring them back into the fold.

  • My favourite version of this song ! Is this recording from a live album ? where did you find it ?

  • A real treated you've uploaded here my friend! They were as good in front of a crowd as they were without one... love it!

  • Gorgeous, gorgeous music- my favorite band from my favorite era. Thank you so much for posting it. But "everything was peaceful" in 1967? Detroit and Newark erupted in riots. Over 11,000 Americans died in Viet Nam. Part of the impact of the SF scene was its focus on peace in the face of dramatic violence.

  • Oh my lord, the memories this music brings back. 60s psychedelic rock will never die.

  • Sorry,i mean...coming straight from the paradise....

  • She's a singing angel,coming straight,we only can listen and cry....

  • Got that unmistakable Winterland acoustic. Never heard another building with complex decay to match it.

  • Well, folks, I was 14 back then - and I lllooovvved that scene and its music! I wonder if this planet ever saw a better year than 1967!!! I am sure, people of later generations will still talk about that great era! And - last but not least: Everything was peaceful!

  • @manoftheworld1000 except for the vietnam war...

  • @3831M You're damn right! That's why we organised protests against it.

  • acid, incense and balloons.

  • I love this!!! What a treat...something I haven't heard before!! I can never get too much of live Airplane!! Cracking version is Right!! Please post more of this.

  • I love this!!! What a treat...something I haven't heard before!! I can never get too much of live Airplane!! Cracking version if Right!!

  • Thank you for putting this on here - very nostalgic for a time when I was a little kid - but grew up & kept them alive & fresh, into the 70's

  • ...Quite an early synthesis of folk morphing into rock!

  • this is just GREAT! can't say thanks enough for this. Would you consider posting the rest of the 45 minutes as Parts 2, 3 & 4 for us 'planeheads? listening to this... its midnight now... makes me want to pull an all-nighter and make dig up all my long-stashed supplies to make some art, brother!

  • as of today, 84 people have shared this on Facebook, so far.

  • The Doors must have listened to the start of this before they penned LA Woman.

  • (crownofcreation68) Dude, you said there's a 45 min version floating around....Where can one get that baby? They're a muso's dream. As interesting today as they were back then. At any moment they could, and often did, take a song off the scale.

  • great jamm

  • PPS That happens to be Guild Starfire bass - I risked getting the crap beat out of me by my brother when I took his new 67 Starfire out of it's case to play along with a Monkees song (She")when he was out on a date.God ,it even SMELLED good.

  • PS To clarify- did not intend to slight the unique & very much missed Mark Sandman of Morphine, who played a bass w' unconventional stringing.Cassidy's great bass lines & his professionalism carried him through this apparent "malfunction".

  • Once ,Grace seemed amused about one reviewer's impression of the Airplane's vocal styling - he said she ,Kanter, & Balin were "three voices in search of a harmony" In retrospect, they did( for a couple of songs) seem to meander a tad on stage feeling each out musically,Similar to the strings section of a large symphony orchestra tuning.in the pit It worked ,obviously ,or they would not have made the great music that has spanned two generations.+Jack beat Sandman's 3 string bass by 20 yrs

  • This is awesome material, so rare and so good!

  • Nice flowing tempo, especially between 0.26 and 0.39.

  • Is Jack playing with broken string?

  • @ujnawierzbie

In the photo, yes. That picture is from Altamont, 1969. If you look up the video for the "other side of this life" performance from that day, you'll see it in action. Regardless, he doesn't miss a beat. True bass god!

fun fact -- Jack broke his G string at woodstock and his A string at Altamont... gov't conspiracy? i think so! ;)

  • Cracking version. The faster tempo works a treat. What a band they were in their pomp. Very few come near them. Why was it that JA's live recodings sounded so cool when most live recordings from that era sucked?

  • This is amazing!! Such a cool version of the song!

  • @PaulReveresNiece

Glad you dig it! Did you hear the other, early version of "Won't You Try" that I put up? It's crazy good as well.

  • @crownofcreation68 Yes! I love the tune. It's different, but awesome. Thank you for sharing these! I love Jefferson Airplane.

  • yummy Grace here....yellow clouds rising in balloons
