The BBC also did Prince Caspian and Voyage of the Dawntreader in 1989 and finally the Silver Chair in 1990. The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe was produced as a film in 2005, Prince Caspian in 2008, Voyage of the Dawntreader in 2010 and more films are planned over the next 4 or 5 years.
Is this the only other narnia movie? Ive been looking for one that i watched when I was like 9 or somethin...loved that one... please dont tell me it was this one hahaha this is cheesy as a ..uh..cheese? hmph
Guys, I'm very confused. This came out ages before Lord Of The Rings, but the LOTR music is used in the trailer. Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought that music was composed specially for LOTR, so it couldn't even have been made when this trailer was created. Does anyone know if the music was floating around beforehand and LOTR just borrowed it?
@Siveywiveyx If you'd checked the video description, you would have seen this trailer was from a DVD. Furthermore, the trailer is for the program on the specific company's DVD version of this movie. I guess they licensed the LOTR music.
They had the LOTR theme music in the background! I'm quite bothered by that. If you're going to take the time to compile a video of clips from the BBC version of The Lion, The Witch & The Wadrobe, at least put its own theme music with it.
I realize I'm way behind on the conversations about this, but I gotta put in my two cents. I absolutely loved these BOOKS as a kid and remember being so disappointed when these films came out because they in no way lived up to the the ideas I had in my head, ie Lucy, costumed animals. The Disney version is better at that simply because of their technological ability. However, I was also disappointed with Disney because they altered the story too much. That said I like the new version much better
@redsoxfan3418 Granted, the books are totally better then either of the movies. BBC or Disney. Lord of the Rings music can never be too epic, there's no such thing. :D
Regarding the upbringing of children I was shocked by a photo I saw recently of my son and his friend making a hand gesture with their 1st and 4th fingers...I was shocked because it was a satanic sign they had picked up from Disney..I went and checked YouTube "illuminati symbolism in childrens TV" only to find that this ype of crap is being fed to our kids on a daily basis...please take 5 mins to check this out...!!!!!!
i was obsessed with this when i was a kid. watched it so many times i knew every word off by heart. the new one is good but to me bbc one will always be the best.
@ccsays yeah the new one's story is rushed because they don't have as much time. that's why the movies never live up to the novels because you can only give so much of the plot. this one was a miniseries and could afford to move slow
@LeeCDylan You really should see the new one. Not even because of the better special effects or higher production values, but because of how closely it follows the original novel.
I still love the miniseries of the 80s. I know i am a lot older now. But i still watch it sometimes on my playstation 2. In my flat. I love susan the best.
K for one I don't get why this one is so wonderful. It has crappy acting, the scenery is ugly like someones backyard and the witch isn't scary!!! Tilda vs Barbara: Tilda has bad temper and Barbara tried to hard and reminded me of a welfare school bully with her midget sidekick
Peter vs ol Peter: They r both K but the ol peter look younger than Susan
Susan vs old New Susan had more deph than ol susan
Edmund vs old The new one is what I believed was real edmund cuz I have a brother whos like that
Look, I just can't stand the 'gallantry' throughout the movie. And Aslan, there's no way I can watch this version without attempting to mute all the 'roars' and 'growls'. But I suppose Peter is better in this one...
I used to LOVE this movie as a kid. I would watch it almost everyday, we had it on VHS. When I saw the new one I was a bit disappointed because I had always loved this one so much. I suppose that with all the new technology it's better but I'll always remember how great it was when I was young.
Great series. SFX bashers should remember this was 20 YEARS ago!
Great old memories. I wonder if Aslan is still around? (The puppet I mean)
LOUSY American voiceover. UGH! Doesn't suit this at all. BBC Narnia was ostensibly a British production. no-one able to find a decent UK voiceover artist?
I grew up with this version. I saw it on PBS when i was about six...I think. the new interpretation is good but it can't replace childhood memories. X D
I liked the BBC version, but the girl who played Lucy bothered me. No offence (I'm no thin cookie myself), but I imagined her much like the one in the newer Narnias.
Anyone else think that Aslan's voice in these is really creepy? I watched them again for the first time in about 7 years and when he spoke for the first time i jumped back.
even though the new ones is better i agree u cant deny the effect the original had on u as a kid and plus the white witch in the original is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy scarier then the witch in the new ones
okay yes the old is scarier but the newer in one is alot more beautiful and intimidating like the white witch is suppused to be. but hey i like the actress in the new one.

Nostalgia often makes older things SEEM better when in fact they are not. I personally preferred Tilda Swinton's performance as the White Witch. She didn't seem as... over-the-top as this one did.

It´s like the movies of Lord of the Rings, the books are better. Often in new movies there missing the tale and the story in books.
Tending to making the battles big with computer effects. I like the old effects because they made things out of ordinary material. Like in Star Wars the made the bases in the old movies of milkpackets.
Heh. You just agreed with me in a round-about way. ;) Childhood memories often = nostalgia. Oh, I agree that in some film-to-book adaptations, story elements are missing, but that's not really the point. Both LOTR and Narnia are stories which will evoke images of massive fights, glorious lands, etc... Before, technology did not exist to do them justice, and the acting was... campy at best. I'm not saying the old ones are worthless. I loved them... but I like the new ones better.

Also, when I was a kid, we couldn't youtube stuff. If a TV show or movie was on, you watched it. Otherwise, you may not see it again unless you got it on video.
Yeah, that's exactly how I feel about the old ones. I can't help but love them (even if now I realize they aren't really that fabulous) because they come with so many wonderful childhood memories.
I think the old ones on DVD were one of the best b-day presents ever.
Well, I guess I can understand that since you're obviously a big Narnia fan haha. These days they can do SO much more with technology, and seeing Tumnus look as real as he does, and computer generated beavers rather than people in beaver costumes DOES make it more authentic. It's what a person would want Narnia to look like- more "real." However, when the BBC version came out, I can't lie and say I wasn't ecstatic and I still love it because of what it represents to me.
Yes! I so remember loving this as a kid. :) Looking at it now kind of makes me wonder how I ever felt this was real but.... Gotta love the 80's. And I disagree with that person below. The new ones aren't crappy remakes I love them!
Suck it up it was made in the 80's. If they had done this movie in the 1990's or so and the actors were little kids in 1988 they would have better technology and would have made the perfect Narnia movie. The new one emphazises special effects and remarkable fight scenes and stunts way too much. Had this movie been made several years later, no crappy remake would have been made.
i loved this as a kid so a bought the narnia collection what a load of old crap aslan looks like a cuddly toy who lures children is jacko inside the alsan suit and his voice knocks me to sleep a should have just keep the memories they were better than the dvds
I absolutely love this series. I grew up watching it all the time at my grandparents house when I was really young and in my later years, bought it on dvd. Still watch it to this day. Even though the production value of it is cheap as chips, its still awesome. Love that marshwiggle (Dr Who) in the Silverchair lol.
I don't know if they stole it. HOPEFULLY, as this was on a DVD made by a Christian company, they got a license. However, on the DVD, a copyright notice follows the trailer, and nothing is said of the music. (For some reason, it didn't rip with this video.)
Nothing rude about that... I like almost all the movies that have been made based on Narnia. (A couple of documentaries about it I found REALLY grating.) This one is an almost vertabim adaptation of the book, the Disney/Walden Media version is a dramatic/epic adaptation, and the animated one is... well, animated.
Some of the actors in this film couldn't act at all. The one who played the White Witch (Barbara Kellerman) acted too over-the-top and exadurated the character a bit. We didnt see Aslan do no action at all in this version other than walk and raw.
Oman...I remember watching this when I was in school. It was hilariously bad. Even our teacher who had given us the choice between this and the animated version was like 'you should have chosen the animated one.' lol
I completely disagree. this bbc version is much the superior. maybe the effects aren't as good but that is what imagination is for plus the disney version is not as true to the book. This version contains all the parts that are integral to C.S. lewis's story whereas the new version features bland actors and i really felt emotionally distant from the characters. this version may contain some bristolians in beaver costumes but it retains the magic of the story so much more.
Bland actors?? Not compared to this version. At least they are good actors in the Disney movie like the ones who played the four kids and the White Witch. Some of the actors in this old version couldn't act at all and the war at the end was absolutely rubbish. I don't remember C.S Lewis mentioning any animated characters in the battle in the book. The Witch in the books was described as being very strong , but in this one she runs away from Peter when she realizes that she stabbed Edmund.
It was a good film, but i still prefer the disney version lol.. i remember the cartoon version! I watched that when i was really little lol it scared me :P
I just watched this. Good lord it was horrible. Some of the worst acting ever. The recent one was far superior, just based on acting, pacing, script...
I disagree on certain counts. The acting and effects do leave something to be desired as far as today's audience goes, but I enjoyed these as a child and that stuff never bothered me then. Also, this movie is superior to the recent one as far as loyalty to the book. The script is almost dead-on most of this movie, including direct quotes from the book. The current movie is somewhat insipid, making the children less brave and more whiney, and Aslan less important.
I agree with the previous comment 100%. Disney's attempt at "the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" had lots of cash thrown at it, and as a result was cluttered with CGI and lacked the quaint British charm that surrounds C. S. Lewis's classic novels.
Despite the lower budget this was a much better version than the big money yankee cash politically correct Disney "entertainment" version. Their publicity budget was probably bigger than the production budget for the whole BBC bit. However we still hold the moral and artistic high ground, so we shall sleep safe in our beds tonight.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Are you kidding me?? The new version had almost nothing to do with the real story. All the kids were whining about their dad (who never went to war in the books), how they weren't heroes (they stepped up in the book), blah blah blah. And Aslan's importance was diminished so much! If you want true to the book, the BBC version is the one you want. If you want cute kids and modern effects, that's what the Disney one is good for.
What part about constantly calling the children "Your majesties"; confronting a wolf on a frozen river; constantly whining about their parents, war, how they aren't heroes, etc.; reducing Aslan to basically the role of an army general; neglecting the deeper magic from before the dawn of time; etc. is truer to the book than the almost constant direct quotation that the BBC version did? Have you been reading a "young readers" abridged version?

Well, I guess I can understand that since you're obviously a big Narnia fan haha. These days they can do SO much more with technology, and seeing Tumnus look as real as he does, and computer generated beavers rather than people in beaver costumes DOES make it more authentic. It's what a person would want Narnia to look like- more "real." However, when the BBC version came out, I can't lie and say I wasn't ecstatic and I still love it because of what it represents to me.

why lord of the rings music though?
arranwallace 3 years ago 2
Yes! I so remember loving this as a kid. :) Looking at it now kind of makes me wonder how I ever felt this was real but.... Gotta love the 80's. And I disagree with that person below. The new ones aren't crappy remakes I love them!
Sparturner1 3 years ago
lol bad made
YunaQQQQQ 3 years ago
Suck it up it was made in the 80's. If they had done this movie in the 1990's or so and the actors were little kids in 1988 they would have better technology and would have made the perfect Narnia movie. The new one emphazises special effects and remarkable fight scenes and stunts way too much. Had this movie been made several years later, no crappy remake would have been made.

I absolutely love this series. I grew up watching it all the time at my grandparents house when I was really young and in my later years, bought it on dvd. Still watch it to this day. Even though the production value of it is cheap as chips, its still awesome. Love that marshwiggle (Dr Who) in the Silverchair lol.

these arent that bad , they follow the story closely. the costumes aren't the best though :) heh

wtf? They stole the LOTR music?!
LegoCritic 3 years ago
I don't know if they stole it. HOPEFULLY, as this was on a DVD made by a Christian company, they got a license. However, on the DVD, a copyright notice follows the trailer, and nothing is said of the music. (For some reason, it didn't rip with this video.)

I really don't want to sound rude, but I loved this as a child, and still do! =)
My cousin gave me her video when I was 5 or 6 & i just loved it! =)
SupawSimba 3 years ago 4
Nothing rude about that... I like almost all the movies that have been made based on Narnia. (A couple of documentaries about it I found REALLY grating.) This one is an almost vertabim adaptation of the book, the Disney/Walden Media version is a dramatic/epic adaptation, and the animated one is... well, animated.
RoyalKidofOz 3 years ago
Hey,
I know I just thought I would wirte the ''rude'' thing because some people below have said they don't like it! =)
And i didn't mean any disrespect it was just my opinion! :L xxx

The Disney version is way better.
Some of the actors in this film couldn't act at all. The one who played the White Witch (Barbara Kellerman) acted too over-the-top and exadurated the character a bit. We didnt see Aslan do no action at all in this version other than walk and raw.
tell8me8more 3 years ago
Oman...I remember watching this when I was in school. It was hilariously bad. Even our teacher who had given us the choice between this and the animated version was like 'you should have chosen the animated one.' lol

Trust me, the animated version was just as bad.

Why The Lord of the rings Music?
MCEProd22 3 years ago 3
Thank you for bringing back the childhood memories!
bohemianchick411 3 years ago 2
I completely disagree. this bbc version is much the superior. maybe the effects aren't as good but that is what imagination is for plus the disney version is not as true to the book. This version contains all the parts that are integral to C.S. lewis's story whereas the new version features bland actors and i really felt emotionally distant from the characters. this version may contain some bristolians in beaver costumes but it retains the magic of the story so much more.
smoofoxie 3 years ago
Bland actors?? Not compared to this version. At least they are good actors in the Disney movie like the ones who played the four kids and the White Witch. Some of the actors in this old version couldn't act at all and the war at the end was absolutely rubbish. I don't remember C.S Lewis mentioning any animated characters in the battle in the book. The Witch in the books was described as being very strong , but in this one she runs away from Peter when she realizes that she stabbed Edmund.
tell8me8more 3 years ago
At least the Disney version had way more action in it and not very bad unprofessional actors.

marmadukesymesparker 4 years ago
I disagree on certain counts. The acting and effects do leave something to be desired as far as today's audience goes, but I enjoyed these as a child and that stuff never bothered me then. Also, this movie is superior to the recent one as far as loyalty to the book. The script is almost dead-on most of this movie, including direct quotes from the book. The current movie is somewhat insipid, making the children less brave and more whiney, and Aslan less important.
MariAnKenobi 3 years ago
I agree with the previous comment 100%. Disney's attempt at "the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" had lots of cash thrown at it, and as a result was cluttered with CGI and lacked the quaint British charm that surrounds C. S. Lewis's classic novels.
onfiremusicman 4 years ago
Agree totally, onfiremusicman.
Caleb9849 3 years ago
Despite the lower budget this was a much better version than the big money yankee cash politically correct Disney "entertainment" version. Their publicity budget was probably bigger than the production budget for the whole BBC bit. However we still hold the moral and artistic high ground, so we shall sleep safe in our beds tonight.

The latest Disney version is the absolute best one. It is so true to the original story.
maxtexture 4 years ago 3
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Are you kidding me?? The new version had almost nothing to do with the real story. All the kids were whining about their dad (who never went to war in the books), how they weren't heroes (they stepped up in the book), blah blah blah. And Aslan's importance was diminished so much! If you want true to the book, the BBC version is the one you want. If you want cute kids and modern effects, that's what the Disney one is good for.
MariAnKenobi 3 years ago
I disagree. The Disney one is the best, sorry. It is so true to the original story. Maybe you read a different book.
maxtexture 3 years ago 5
What part about constantly calling the children "Your majesties"; confronting a wolf on a frozen river; constantly whining about their parents, war, how they aren't heroes, etc.; reducing Aslan to basically the role of an army general; neglecting the deeper magic from before the dawn of time; etc. is truer to the book than the almost constant direct quotation that the BBC version did? Have you been reading a "young readers" abridged version?
