She departed the ugly ducking and returns the beautiful elegant swan. The old battle- axe of a mother is none to pleased lol. Change - does not bode well with some people. Her mother is a bitter, fearful old woman who tries to rule her with a rod of iron, pity she couldnt' have embraced the change and welcomed her back. Wonderful acting by both women.
she still has to honor her mother, I think that also is what the doctor said, but then when she finally let loose on her mom and she died she was left with a lot of guilt
@ednuk honoring ones parents does not mean you obey them. If they told you to do something evil you do not honor them by carrying the request out. An adult lives by their own internal voice, not the external voice of the parent. You honor your parents by acknowledging the sacrifices they made for you to be an independent adult. If they resent your independence and out of that resentment try to hurt you then you cut off contact with them.
Gladys Cooper was an English actress in the early silent movies in England. Google her, read the biography of her that was written by Wikipedia and then check out her photos.
There is nothing worse than a Bitch of a mother, who is bitter and dry! Yet, the character of Ms. Vale show's that the human will and psyche can triumph over the tyranny of family or otherwise. Love triumphs.
Standing up to someone like this mother would mean total bansishment. She is a baby throwing a fit and her daughter is her prisoner. There is no compromise with such immature people.
Poor Charlotte, her love affair with Jerry is tragic, especially the scene at the train station. I'd say this film has most of the best screen kisses ever xxx
@F: bette says in her interview w/ dick cavett (sp) that she's always thought that charlotte would end up as a couple w/ the doctor (claude raines) & help him w/ his work, since bette thinks jerry was too weak of a man & the doctor was stronger & more stable.
i agree w/ this as well. i think the doctor & charlotte would have been a better couple.
Fuck that bitch, I'd send her to hell! I wear what I want to dinner and if I don't want her to move my things, I make it known to her that they are mine and I shall keep them where I want them. I don't care if she's my mother, she would not take advantageof me!
Bette Davis's character was beaten down her whole life by her tyrant mother and ended up having a mental collapse. She does have an argument with her mother later in the film and....well....watch and see. She sends her someplace, alright.
she should have pushed mom down some steps!

@P: charlotte found her own way of standing up to her mother, which i thought was ingenious & pretty strong in will.
