  • A grand and all encompasing Grecian tragedy, a dazzling film - supremely directed with an ensamble cast of the highest order. An epic film that succinctly and intelligently manages to fuse together the grand sweep and narrative of pre/post WWII European history whilst retaining as its core a deeply moving story of loneliness, desire and our need for love & affection.

  • The story of my life. In a much, much smaller home, of course.

  • Mr. Steven is such a lonely person, so solitary, never been out in the world, trapped by his own "position" in life, afraid to strike out on his own and make a new life for himself, I have known people like him in my life, caring too much what others think and afraid to take a chance in life, such a sad person, but so dignified.............an era long gone by.....

  • The Remains of the Day the perfect drama and perfect film nominated for 8 Oscars in my opinion it should have won them all!

  • AMAZING movie, so tragic, MR STEVENS CAUGHT in his PRINCIPALS

FREEDOM-AIR-LIGHT.... is só IMPORTANT and LOVE !!!

    ALL-time FAVOURITE-movie !

  • i con´t bealive that antony hopkins did´t win the oscar for this performance and the magic thing was that in the same time he played shadowlans and if you watch both you can say that only anthony hopkins can play 2 difernt

characters at the same time not couse am a big fan of him but i think am saying the truth

  • One of my fav movie of all times.I´m actually writting an essay for my International Relations Masters based on this movie.

  • I 've been in both sides...

    Wonderful...

"But I was to busy serving, to listen to the speeches..."

  • a magnificent film...I can't believe Hopkins didn't win an Oscar for his incredible performance as Stevens

  • I sympathize with Stevens deeply, having also had a person whom I loved just slip away. It has left me partially numb and is a regret that will remain with me until I die.

  • @DarthDantes until you meet someone new....

  • Though the end sequence with the trapped pidgeon is not very subtle indeed, it summons Steven's own personal life not more. And it's a perfect shot from Dyrham Park.

  • i need to watch this movie as well- the book rocked.

  • I need to watch this movie :)

ahh im looking for a place to hear only the music?, in full lenght, because im trying to learn it for piano, and its hard to keep on track, with this video, and there's no other videos of piano with this melodi.. damn..

  • just buy the soundtrack and play it by ear if you want it that bad. i'm sure this does not exist in a written score for purchase.

  • re previous comments, or it could be the pigeon is a symbol of the England that got away from the second world war...

  • i think the pigeon does symbolise, Mr Stevens letting go of the dream of being with Miss Kenton and maybe his spirit, he shall live in that house until he dies, in service. He has given up.

  • Excellent comment clazza01! I've always struggled with understanding the real meaning of this final scene, and what you say makes perfect sense, Mr. Stevens coming to the realization that what his life is like now is what it will be until the end. Thank you!

  • You're bright, clazza01. I hadn't understood the meaning of the pidgeon. What you say makes beautiful sense.

  • i think that year Tom Hanks won for Philadelphia

  • Comment removed

  • Anthony Hopkins got nomination for the best actor in Oscar that year? but he didn't get it. Does anyone remember who got the award?

  • If it wasn't for Schindler's list, this was the real oscar winner!

  • The Remains of the Day is the best novel!!

  • We then see the pigeon enter the room at that same moment and that is the spirt of Mr. Stevens- We then see Mr. Lewis letting the pigeon go to escape Darlington Hall (Lewis wanting Stevens to to on the trip to Cleveland) -we then see Stevens again at the window- behind bars- he does not leave Darlington...He never does- The pigeon- or spirit leaves the corpse of Stevens at Darlington Hall.

  • In the ending scene we see the Darlington Hall come back to life as Mr. Stevens loses his. When Congressman Lewis asks Stevens if he remembers his eye-opening amateur speech- Stevens realizes that his life was spent serving the wishes of others and at that moment old Mr. Stevens dies in the grand Darlington Hall- the same home his father passed away in years earlier.

  • the music in this film is so freaking amazing!!

  • yes, really moving, all the more after poor christopher passed away. hopkins is great - that look through the window, and the camera 'flying' away... .thanks for posting it.

  • always breaks my heart. But I love it!

  • Thank you.
