not that you can blame him, but if he waited 2 seconds more before he threw his reserve he wouldn't have needed to and could have kept flying.

You probably aren't a skydiver so you probably wouldn't understand that at that altitude, seconds is all you have. Gambling on just two of them could have meant the end. A $50 repack seems much more appealing than finishing the rest of the ride to Earth hoping that the canopy clears itself.

mätu was for me not a normal pilot. there a many acro pilots in the world. he was my brother. he was just outstanding. his way of thinking, his happiness, his philosophy of life, his energy, his kindness for everybody. he didn't care about the opinion of the other persons. he did just follow his happiness, his visions without hurting anybody.

when he was flying, he was not a pilot, he was not controling his wing. he was the wing himself. he was one unit with the wing. flying was his life, his happiness, his everything.

and it was him who gave me a speedflying wing for my birthday because he wantet always i started doing speedflying. and later i had a great time with him doing speedflying together.

but it is just 3 weeks ago, i did speek with him for a long time. he was crazy about speedflying and i tried to coole him down. but there was nothing to do. he told me that this is his happiness he has to follow. he told me not to be sad if once he will be death. because his life is one happiness and he would never regret anything.

A good friend told me that he was on the top of launch and the speed wing he was about to fly did'nt fully inflate in time before he got to the edge of the mountain and fell to his tragic death. But as i said this is what i've been told. Condolences to all his friends and family our thoughts are with you, The legendary Mathias Roten.

I think the problem was the wake the gliders have behind them. At first it seems one of them dives a little to fast and trys to correct this by simply turning the spiral a little flatter. By this the flight path of the other one crosses the wake and collapses.

How long did it actually take to make the decision to throw the reserve? Was it a conscious act of waiting or were you simply shocked and hesitated therefore to pull the package?

as an acro pilot, you don't pull the package just because you are shocked.

i saw, that my friend comes completely into my glider. so to liberate him, i wantet to release the tension on my paralider by pulling the package. there was just 100 meters left to the ground... i think i would to the same again in the same situation.

To me it looks like 17 seconds into the video, the guy on the right takes a small deflation, he then knocks into his partners glider which starts a cascade of collapses. Until one gets caught in the other's lines. It just recovers almost immediately as he chucks the reserve, but I don't blame him for it!
