I've always found that scene very disturbing and chilling, Maxine really conveys the shock of seeing one of her neighbours injured and the realisation of what Richard is doing sinking in, the bit where her baby starts crying and she screams and is bludgeoned to death is very haunting

Firstly, he found out Audrey had a large sum of money, and so tried to make her look senile and kill her by setting her house on fire. That idea failed, and so Plan B was to turn on Emily, whose house he ended up owning, and tried to kill her so he could sell her house and make a profit.
