it will be the sadest day on the underground when they run the last A60 in passenger service , on the met! TO be replaced by that AWEFUL PEICE OF PLASTIC! called the S,stock!
I was on an A-Stock not that long ago, it must have been going at 75MPH for some time, was still going at around 60MPH when we went over the points at Neasden. I thought that it was going to derail.
Amazing - this is just how I remember Wembley Park looking when I moved there in 1995! The view has changed beyond recognition since then as the station was heavily refurbished in the mid-2000s.
I stood on that plat for on the 22nd of November, 1978. England played Bulgaria. Glenn Hoddle scored on his debut, and the Met line stopped at that platform because of the late-night fans.
In the rush hour some of the Watford's went from Finchley Road to North Harrow non-stop so you are right at the time of day this vid was taken that would have been a Watford Service.
Anyway, lets look forward to the new S stock being a worthy replacement as it is impractical to keep rolling stock as intensively used as A stock for 50 years. The economics just don't make sense.
I knew that some Uxbridge trains did, and that some people wish they still did, but not the Watfords as well.
In some countries they find it cheaper to refurbish than replace trains - even old ones. However with the S stock the changes are about much more than simply modernising. The better quality of ride, air-con, walk-through feature are all changes which would have been less than easy to acheive with simply refurbishing older trains.
i have to say the most comfortable seats i have ever sat on is a metro line train seat. i used travel mon-fri and you cannot help but go to sleep on it after a hard days works in the city. its amazing even with it full upto finsbury park you just have to close those eyes. and if you get a window seat god its bliss. and with added bonus of having pink floyd in your ear its heaven. A stock the best by far.
@xwingclass I'm told that the seating on the replacement trains is also comfortable, its just that there will be 30% fewer seats so many more people will be standing - in discomfort.
btw, 'Finsbury Park'?
Maybe you meant Harrow On The Hill? Or were you talking about the class 313 trains?
@citytransportinfo Sorry its been a long time i ment Finchley Road sorry. i think they should keep them as they are. the worst moment always was the when they metro would stop on platform 1 or 2 and i would have to run across the bridge to platform 3 or 4 i used live in rayners lane. something like that. anyway good memories.
Thats great news Toppackage !!. One of the best trains around in my view. Had many an awesome ride thru "Metroland" on these beasts so im really glad that an example will be saved. Do we know which lucky units its gonna be ? Stupid question really, i guess, as 5000 & 5001 should be the ones to save.
8 car unit is going to be kept for heritage and and red white and blue sandite train.. so the A60s will still live on in there silver and they can still hit 70mph have a look at the video i posted mate the A60S know no bounderys lol
@astock5000 the LTM is separate and is for close public viewing however there is an A60 8 car set going to become part of the heritage fleet witch will be restored to its aluminium finnish and from what i know this unit will be kept at its home depot Neasden along with the red white and blue 4 car sandite unit all my information has come from the inside... but witch 2 units will live on i ? .. there is celebrations planned for the last A60 working so could the restored unit be part of them
@toppackage , be nice if this happens!, same goes for the 1962 tube stock unit owned by cravens heritage, but as we all know in the railway world everything costs money from the smallest brake block washer to full EHO, still at present the A60 stock can easily leave a DMU standing!
S,stock on the met the passengers aint gonna know whats hit em, fuck all seating ,no opening windows, air con if it works GET REAL,................steamers delight run though the whole train,if you know what im saying
I worked here on S and T through the eighties and you seriously had to keep your wits about you with these flying up and down during day mntce inspections. More so during breakdowns on the stopping line!
Wembly Park canteen was one of the best on the job.
It was, as when built the top speed was 70mph. Howeevr that has now been reduced to 50mph and I understand that when the replacement S stock trains enter service these will be lowered even further to 40mph.
The S stock trains are already creating a storm of protest, as they are designed for standing passengers (even on the Amersham service where journeys can take 45+ minutes).
second fastest rapid transit train period, just behind the record holding R44 from New York, which nealry made 80 MPH before the motors started exploding.
Looks like Harrow on the hill, makes sense I suppose.
Waited here for ages and ages for an Amersham train in the past! Sad to see from reading the posts that the new met lines will have less seats, despite being thrown about all over the place by them, the seats are so comfy and where else on the tube do you get a rack with hooks!?
I think it was partly because the train's door configuration delayed station dwell times. They only had single doors & although these were wider than normal doors trains with double doors have an even wider opening.
Converting them to double doors would have cost so much that for just 10% more they bought brand new trains.
This is a good example of history repeating itself as the 'Watford Joint Stock' trains on the Bakerloo Line also only lasted for about a decade, for a similar reason.
After living in chalkhill 2 min walk away from Wembley Park Station all my life I can never remember how the Station looked back in the days this brings back alot of old memories
Yet again an ex vid and yes can confirmthat when I used the A stock in 60's they could keep up with the DMUs infact i can remember everybody discretely looking up from their papers when we were racing between West Hampstead and Harrow. Mind you the ride was appalling on the A with hunting bogies and bouncing almost of the seats "BUT OH WHAT FUN"!! 50 mph you say now wellthey are now just like tube trains anyway since refurbishment!!
Apparently (from I've read in books) Metropolitan Railway trains always rode badly at speed.
In the late 1980's there was a railtour with Sarah Siddens hauling a fleet of MK11 carriages, including parts of the Circle Line as well as the Met Main Line, and from what I heard the ride was excellent - implying that the track was in good nick; it was the trains which had the problem.
and also the reson they gave such a bad ride in the 80's was they were due for an overhaul on the boggies and the track was jointed and not welded which doesn't help the matter!
and despite their young age the 1983 stock is history now... although I have video footage I have hardly any still images of them.
In a few years the A stock will be going too, and as the replacement trains will have far fewer seats so many more passengers will have to stand. Its called progress! I can think of other, less complimentary things to say about this.
Not living in that part of London I haven't been there for ages, but yes, the station has been rebuilt - in connection with the rebuilding of Wembley Stadium.
yes, on the far left is a Jubilee Line train. On the far right is a Marylebone train.
I had a 1 in 3 chance, Amersham, Uxbridge or Watford. I thought as Part of the Wembley re-development, Wembley Park would undergo a complete face lift.
actually you had a 1 in 4 chance - as this was filmed in the evening rush hour when the two northbound through trains to Chesham also pass through here!
This was filmed in the 1990's, before the trains were refurbished & painted in corporate livery - and before this station was rebuilt.
Thank you for showing us with your video. This video is one of my nightmares about weird trains! I wished I would film weird trains in my dreamland.

Was that the fast Amersham Train, I thought they where supposed to whistle, when approaching the station. I used that line from 1975-1998.
JohnnyFreightTrain 4 years ago
I've just checked the master video image on a frame by frame basis. The fast train is actually going to Watford.
In those days these trains were allowed to reach 70mph (112km/h) - sadly nowadays they are restricted to a snail like 50mph (80 km/h).
As for whistling, well the platform is not normally used, so maybe they do not need to here.
