OMG it has an optical illusion from 0:25 to 0:49 that broke my brain at first few moments. It seems that the gears on the second rod from left rotating in different directions
yes at simple view anybody can see is 3 speed, haha of course, you need to be at least a doctor in mechanic engineer or to be swiss to just see this nice mess of gears and understand what is the relation between each gear.
As has been said several times, there are only 3 possible output speeds. If you look, the gear ratios are the same between both lever changes. Therefor lever 1 position 1 + lever 2 position 1 = lever 1 position 2 + lever 2 position 2.
Ok so you have 4 positions A B C and D. A) both sticks up obviously 1:1 ratio, B) left up right down lets say 1:4 ratio C) left down right up 4:1 ratio D) both down 1:1, but wait why is it a 1:1 ratio there different size gears as both being up?
because the speed gained by the gears on the right is equivalent to the speed lost on the left, hence 1 turn input = 1 turn output or a 1:1 ratio.
@wolgran20 Um…no, that's 4 speed… 2 main speeds (stick by motor) multiplied by 2 sub speeds, (the farthest stick).. Now, unless my preschool math is failing me.. that's 4
@geekymgee he's talking about the gear speed ratio, not math. if you only get 3 ratios for the 4 different gear combos it is only a 3 speed since 2 ratio are the same, it's like how a transmission in your car work.
now I don't know if the gear set gives him 4 ratio or not, but regardless of how many gear combos he has, the amount of ratios he can produce is his gear speed
Awesome! Great job. Now just invent a Lego Technic synchromesh and we're good to go.

Speed to power and power to speed mmm... I think these is used with cars power first to make a momentum then when its right change to speed

Very nice, I wanted to build something like that but I couldnt make it...

thanks for the transmission design inspiration... now I just need some actual figures.

I made exactly same principle gearbox from lego about 20 years ago :D ...only difference was that i have only 3 shift and reverse, and one stick only

15 gears, 3 speeds. It could be done with 4 to 6 gears... Smaller box, lower cost, less parts to break, lower noise, less torque loss...

Why 2 sticks you should improve your gearbox and get only one stick

Hate to break it to u but technicly its only 3 speed
But nice job all the same
wolgran20 3 months ago 61
@wolgran20 2 stick with 2 positions each. 2x2=4. 4 speeds
edwardmusaev 3 months ago
@edwardmusaev yes your right 2 x 2 = 4, however...

Think of a bike, and it's 2 sets of gears.
Fluvance 1 month ago
@Fluvance yes but 2 of those gear combinations are identical ratios hence 3 speed
somenutjob 4 weeks ago
@wolgran20 Lever 1 position A, lever 2 positions A, B.
Lever 1 Position B, Lever 2 positions A, B.
4 different speeds achievable, 4 speed trans...lol
Nice try bro...lol

@wolgran20 how is it 3 speed please explain to me
dilster97 2 weeks ago
@dilster97 Its explained above ^^
sure there is 4 stick positions but there is only 3 different gear ratios because 2 of the positions have the same ratios
wolgran20 2 weeks ago
@wolgran20 wrong, 2 levers w/ 2 positions.
2x2=4
your math must be fucked up

lordlong 4 hours ago
@lordlong up up
down down
down up
up down
all four of these have a different ratio, however slight they may be, and thus he has four speeds, regardless of difference in mph
