I like to explain tending to a supremum of entropy as going from a more unfair state to a fairer state. Imagine if every particle in the universe travelled with the exact same velocity vector, yet the total energy - the sum of the mass of each particle times its speed squared - were the same as today's universe. Then no particle could be aware of any other particle's existence, since one would need a force particle to jump from one particle to another with a DIFFERENT velocity vector than...
@mphello ... the group majority in order to get from one particle to another. If that force particle (from one of the particles) just continued with the same group majority velocity vector, it couldn't get to any of the other particles.
I have studied Math and Physics in Germany and this song gave me the best price-performance ratio in my entire life. I passed, barely though, the test about Thermodynamics with merely 1:23 Minutes of studying. Thanks Steve
I can't believe people are trying to argue about entropy on here. Unless you have a PHD in physics I doubt you have the knowledge to back up any of your claims.
I'm not a physicist, but, I believe that energy is required to decrease the entropy of a system (at the expense of the surroundings which will increase in entropy). So there's a relation... =)
@Sectorsophia Using energy is essentially the source of entropy in a system. The fuel used will have less usable energy in it and it will be in a much more disordered state. If you tidy a room or mess it up, work is done in both situations and therefore entropy increases in both situations. If you do any kind of work in a system you will increase it's entropy. There are no exceptions to this law.
@Sectorsophia in reality entropy does not decrease because you can not reverse its direction. entropy is ever increasing thermodynamic characteristic. some of the energy that you add into the system is wasted as heat. however you can slow down the increase of entropy if youcan develop a system wherein all processes aproach adiabatic. or you can even stop entropy if your adiabatic system can be reversed, thus isentropic. though stopping it also mean that no energy can be used to do work.
As to the technical question: this was filmed on 16mm film running through a camera on an old Oxberry Animation stand, just like they used in the old days. It's as big as a Volkswagen, and the college I went to was lucky enough to have one in use. I'm glad you liked it.

the teaching of thermodynamiks made me think... if disorder/chaos is naturaly increasing, and it takes energy from outside, to create order/decrese entropy, and the world we live in has been in perfect oder for billions of yeahs, wouldnt that mean that there must be a god or something that creates order, and made this perfect system we live in?
The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics is valid in CLOSED systems. The earth is not a closed system because it is constantly exchanging energy with it's surroundings. More specifically, we gain energy from the sun and lose some back to space. Since we have a steady supply of energy, we can increase order on our planet, consistent with the 2nd Law. There is no need for a 'god' hypothesis.
Also, the world we live in is not in 'perfect order.' Far from it. Cancer and birth defects are some examples.
Way to elaborate. Cancer and birth defects are very specific examples of entropy at work. Cancer is a degradation of cellular functionally, typically as a result from environmental factors affecting the highly ordered state of cells. Birth defects are again mutations that occur causing atypical genetic properties. Please explain how this is inaccurate.
Both of these examples are rarely caused by degradation of cellular functions. Cancer is in fact more of a car stuck on 4th gear not a degradation. As for Birth defects again the majority of causes is things outside of cell degradation.
(Ya I know late, so sue me if I don't check my E-mail)
I just took a thermodynamics final. Despite the fact that the equations for all these properties started floating around in my head, this video is awesome.
You know, people always ask if Einstein was black, but it wasn't meant to look that way. It's a combination of the way the paper was filmed, and the fact that the puppets were made from computer printouts that I colored in with markers. He did come out a little more "George Hamilton" than I'd liked, but that's what you get for a first try.
do you have the lyrics or something? we need it.

Such a universe is maximum "fairness" or entropy.

If entropy is the tendency for a system to go from a state of high energy to a state of low energy, then it's like gravity for energy.

What we percieve as entropy is the reason why our perception of time doesn't stop; you must remember every thing is relative to every thing eles.
