I know pagans who learn a plethora of dead languages like old Norse and ancient Greek, prepare elaborate rituals, give regular offerings, and build their own shrines and altars. On the whole, I think it's very rare for modern Christians to show a similar degree of devotion.

I was being dismissive, and I was unclear. In my mind, fear for himself would be an equally poor motive for him. I challenge you to spend time in a large American city and see how many people interact with you. It's close to zero.
