"You tell yourself that you've mellowed with the years, but I know I haven't." This is what Kyung Wha Chung says on her Brahms violin concerto during her interview with Gramophone Magazine and it is called "Passion without compromise". So, twofinedays, Im surprised Mrs Chung actually said that she does not try to be a "perfectionist" anymore.
She said it on an interview with a Korean media in 1997 when she came to Korea to have concerts celebrating her 30th anniversary of international debut. I'm sorry I cannot note down exactly what she said word by word, but basically she meant that it doesn't mean much to obsessively trying to make things 'perfect' and that it's more of going away from true music-making.
2 years later, when her second collection of short pieces was released, she commented about 'Beau Soir', which is the only music she recorded for both her first and second collection of short pieces in more than 10 years of time apart, that she dosen't like her first record because it's too stiff. Indeed one can hear how she managed to relaxe her music, as natural as breathing, in her second record of 'Beau Soir'.
After. This concert took place in 1997, and the recording on EMI label was done in, I believe (because I don't have the CD with me at the moment) in 1999 or early 2000.
I'm not sure she actually said that her technique has been 'deteriorated'. From what I've read she did mention that she doesn't try to be a perfectionist any more, and about her Brahms concerto recording, she should have done it a bit too earlier. But then she's now 60, and one cannot expect the same power and drive of vigorouse 20's or ripe 30's.
By the way, her finger injury occured only in 2005, and since then she stoped giving public performances up to date. All the videos I uploaded on Youtube were taken before 2005.
She plays it differently from her recording with St. Luke. And why did she play the 9:57 to 10:02 part so fast? She sounded like she was rushing and was struggling to play those quick notes. Wow, but she performed the 3rd mov of Summer with such vigor and passion.
I could watch her play all day!

IS this performance before or after her recording with St Luke Ensemble?

She's admitted that her technique has deteriorated somewhat over the years, but she more than compensates with her passionate interpretations...

Really? She admitted that? Why did her technique deteriorate and when did it start? So sad, but she's still great though.
Fr3derick 3 years ago
I think that's because she injured some of her fingers. Due to injury, she may not be able to retain her technique.
