I know you've heard this about a million times, but my dad got a chinchilla from a friend and he made that noise the first few days we had him. He doesn't do it anymore. My mom said that he was just "voicing his displeasure of the situation."
Your chinchilla has.... 1) heard a noise he/she is not sure off and is calling out to other chinchillas in the area (this is a natural thing for them to do in the wild) or 2) Is just craving attention. My chinchilla makes this noise at night if he wants attention no matter how much ive given him all day. Hope this helps. :-)
Chinchillas also do that when they are lonely. My chinchilla cried like that but much louder. So I got him a cage mate and he doesn't make that noise anymore.
They do this when they're scared, yes. But if they make the noise and you come and look every time, they'll quickly learn to do it when they just want attention. Chinchillas are quick learners.
Mine does the same thing when she's sleeping..but much louder! It scared me the first time she did it and I jumped out of bed thinking that she hurt herself! Nope...she was fast asleep, dreaming :D
That is their way of saying they are scared. Mine did that a lot because we have 5 cats. She hates it when the cats stand by the door and try to get in. Very cute chinchilla! Love her fur color!
Ours do the same exact thing, and only during the day when they are supposed to be sleeping. We know it's a warning bark, but there's obviously nothing to warn about. The only conclusion I can see is that they are dreaming. It creeps my wife out a bit, though ;-) It's an eerie sound. Wonder what pet-store or hand-raised chinchillas could POSSIBLY have nightmares about?
my chinchillas do the same... i once played my bass and the chilla started barking. i was n a practice amp ,and it was almost all the way down. It wasnt loud.
hes barking, Im not quite sure why they do that, but when mine does, the dog thinks someone stole her squeky toy, lol, so she starts searching around for it and wagging her tail.
Chinchillas does that noise when they are a sort of scared of something. They see or hear something that they haven't experienced before. And yes, they do that noise also when they are asleep, so then they're having dreams.
I'd really like to know if chinchillas dream. Ama, the one in this video, barks like that every once in awhile. And Chevy, the little white boy at the end, coo's and chirps in his sleep. It's the most precious thing ever. Makes me wonder what they dream about.
Chevy? He was...um...lemme think...almost 5 months old in this video. He was the runt of three, and was only about 280 something grams when I got him. He's almost 600 now.
so cute !

mine do that time to time. I though it was a cough at first. they seem to do it for no reason over here. or they had a strange dream.

My chinchilla will sometimes wake up and do that. It sounds so sad. D: He does it if he's scared too. So I sometimes wonder if he's had a nightmare.
