  • so cool!!

  • I love a good flerb.

  • how do the settings on this thing translate to a cathedral?

  • Hey err, you weren't using any other pedals in front of that were you? Is your guitar using an active or passive pickup?

  • @speckofdust21 - passive.. of course.

  • Very nice demo! Short and informative.

  • flerb sounds shite but rest sound wicked

  • Dave, would you say that reverb is essential to make a dry clean sound stand over the mix?

  • @InspiredProphecy - no. it just adds space/ambience/depth, etc, depending on use.

  • 1:49, I think the holy grail is haunted, or at least possessed...

  • @1:08 Yeaaa

  • haha chorused flanged tremolo xD thats what it should be called

  • can you show what you were playing? i could listen to that all day.

  • great review

  • I love the Spring one very much..

  • "let go to hall and i'll play the same thing for reference" ... 'yeeeah"

    hahaha nice

  • how much is this it worth?

  • BEARD!!!!

  • Hi, Great demo. Nice to hear someone actually play rather than read out a description of something?!

I was trying to choose between this pedal and the Digitech hardwire.. Have you tried that one? Also, are you running this pedal in front of you're amp? (I have an Orange amp & cab and no effects loop)

    Thanks :-)

Excellent 'springy' strat by the way. Very 'Mayer-esque!'

  • hi Dave, how much volume does it suck? i've just taken the original HG off my board 'cos it sucked so much volume, at varying degrees at that. sometimes a little, sometimes a heck of a lot. THEN, it started to BOOST THE SIGNAL!! That was the straw that broke the camels back for me. Any ideas?

  • @Stevefulshamband - the old HG had issues, this one doesn't.

  • Hi! As I see you're quite interested in guitar gear and pedals and I need your help. I play in a metal band and I want to spice up my lead sound.. I don't like delay pedals much.. tried a lot of them (Mxr Carbon Copy etc.) and I honestly really like the sound of the reverb pedals. I use an Engl Powerball amp, Marshall 1960A cab with V30 speakers and in front of it: Xotic BB Preamp, Morley Bad Horsie wah. What would you suggest to me? plus I really like the holy grails and the digitech hardwire!

  • I really like that you played the same thing over and over for reference. Most review/demos don't do that.

  • @duckness1 - glad you get it.

  • GREAT VIDEO ! May I ask, what is that for song?

  • Got this for xmas, amazing!

  • hey guys..i play a les paul through a fender deville 212.. im looking for my first reverb pedal and ive heard great things about this pedal.. any thoughts or guidance.. pedals i have already are..Boss ME 70, Boss DD 20, Digitech Whammy, MXR Phase 90, and cry baby wah...

  • dave, when i plug this unit, it takes around 6-8 seconds to power up, is that normal? i also own the cathedral reverb which is a more powerful unit but only takes 1-2 sec to power up, please reply, thanks

  • @pacoymarquez - yes, EH's power is always a bit weird.

  • @pacoymarquez - I'm not sure, that might be due to the power supply

  • this or boss rv1

  • hey dave. do you run this pedal through the front or the effects loop? i have the standard holy grail, but recently acquired an effects-loop-less amp, it sounds way to wet, even on 0.000001, do you get this issue? is there a way around it? :S

  • @aektzis91 - yes, usually in the loop.

  • hi!

how can I get that surf music tone?

does this pedal sound like that?

    thanks!

  • @omfsouza try an echo for a bit of slap

  • whats that riff you play throught the video. its makin me jealous

  • what pedal would you recomend. The EHX nano holy Grail or the EHX Holy Grail plus. i like that a power suply comes with this pedal. but what pedal should i pick?

  • These pedal's suck if you want to use a power supply that doesnt come with the pedal, makes a shit load of noise.

  • @blowoffsorrow I do not have this problem using a one spot.

  • would this work well with a tube screamer?

  • @conbonz666 - definitely. I use it with Maxons and Keeley TS808 all the time.

  • @conbonz666 I use my Holy grail with a Ibanez TS9. Sounds great trust me !

  • cool but the flerb is worthless

  • sweet

  • coool!

  • Sounds great especially for the $

  • amazing

  • Nice!

  • dave awesome again man. i am was wondering if you could do another demo with some blues and solo stuff. i would love to see how this sounds with that because i am deciding between this and the rv 5 and rv 7. thanks dave

  • That's a really nice part you're playing =).

  • Does this work well with bass?

  • does this take a regular 9v adapter? i know some ehx pedals are weird about that

  • yes it does, but you're right EH pedals are very picky about power. I just use the one supplied with the pedal.

  • thank you mr weiner

  • is this analog?

  • no, digital

  • Is it worth the extra doe? the little holy grail sounds the same to me? idk?

  • it depends how much tone shaping you want to do. if you want reverb just for the sake of reverb, you can get the nano, but the holy grail plus doesn't cost that much more, its probably worth it.

  • hall all the wayyy.

  • great, straight forward video. liked it a lot.

  • i own a jcm 800 marshall half stack.. i am looking in to buy a reverb pedal. basically what i want in a reverb pedal is NOT some huge drawn out hall sound but just a classic shorter reverb like one you would get out of just an ordinary fender practice amp..

im not very good at knowing great pedals so i was wondering if anyone out there knows my pain and has a solution out there

  • Demeter makes a pedal with analog springs in it. Its called the Reverbulator. It will get you that classic Fender reverb sound. Check out the Demeter website and also search Youtube for a demo. They are expensive ($429 new). I have one I might consider selling for less. Contact me if interested.

  • omg i Love the Hall effect !!

  • can anyone point me in the direction of a demo of one of these with a dirty sound

    thanks

  • Hey, nice review. Is it possible for you, to make a review, where you play lead and with some drive! Because Im considering buying a reverb, that can be added to my leadguitar.

    That would be awesome!

  • nicley done mr weiner

  • Thanks heaps, man!

  • Fuck the pedal, I want that shirt! haha.

    Good review, though. Very concise.

  • riffoftheweek . com

  • nice bit of guitar

  • I've got a vintage Boss Roland rx-100 spring reverb that eats this one for breakfast.

  • man, can you help me?

What Analog Delay is better in your opinion???

  • Hey Dave. Are you still touring with Steve Vai?

  • We're not on tour right now, but you can check out the new dvd coming Sept 29!

  • Do you know when you go back on tour??

  • It's not a bad pedal but if I was after a dedicated 'verb pedal I would find it hard to go past the T-Rex Roommate it may cost a bit, but, I think it's worth it.

  • "So for a reverb your choices are:

Digital - small, reliable, cheap, versatile, pretty decent sounding if you get ehx / BOSS etc."?

you mean fulltone is bad too and other similar true bypass pedals too its stupid it doesent mean if its small and reliable that its bad

  • An actual church.........

    huhuh

  • is this analog or digital.

  • It's digital.

A portable analog unit would probably have springs in it. There are some BBD-based (analog delay) reverbs from the 80's, but it never caught on due to the digital revolution.

So for a reverb your choices are:

Digital - small, reliable, cheap, versatile, pretty decent sounding if you get ehx / BOSS etc.

Spring - bigger, unreliable (esp. w/ tubes), expensive, one sound only (sort of) and the coolest thing in the world.

Plate - HUGE, EXPENSIVE, fuhgedaboutdit the coolest except for

  • This guy makes great review

  • love this pedal - sweet riff too

  • very good review

  • is this pedal analog?

  • Dave,

Seeing as you know much about reverb, I ask you this: I have a VOX AC/30.... I just ordered the Holy Grail Plus online.... My question to you is should I keep the reverb settings on my AC/30 at zero, and only attempt reverb through the Holy Grail, or should I keep the reverb on the amp at a different setting? Are there any advantages or disadvantages to either options?

    Thanks,

    Mike

  • use whatever sounds good.

  • First, these type of effects are good if you just have one setting that you use 100% of the time. But if you play with a band and you need to change setting between songs then you'll be twisting knobs all the time and that's a drag. Better to have a programmable selectable unit via midi controller or foot switch. Try putting your pedal in the effects loop if you have one. That should take your amp's reverb out of the circuit.

  • and then..? you can't bend and do it..??

i do it all the time.. in fact, if you have one of that digital "programmable" "via midi" boards, yeah, you can store patches, but if you play in a different amp or any different situation you have to re-program your settings and with this kind of pedals yes, you have to bend down or get in your knees, but you can do it all manually...just a twist of a knob, not all computer o cell-phone-kinda shit...plus sounds better than any of those things...

  • hey dave,

what is the big difference between the normal holy grail and the holy grail plus??

  • I never owned the Holy Grail so I don't know.

  • ok.. thx anyway!

  • the original holy grail doesn't have room reverb or a blend knob. just spring, hall, and flerb. there's a switch for that and only one reverb knob. Honestly, it sounds better than this IMO. A LOT simpler. AND cheaper.

  • regular holy grail only has a blend knob and doesn't have the room reverb model

so this one is more tweakable

  • I believe that the holy grail + has a few extra settings...

  • Holy Grail doesn't have a Room Reverb Option (only Hall, Spring, and Flerb), and it only has a wet/dry mix. They both sound pretty nice for digiverb pedals, though.

  • This one is smaller, has more versatility and has room reverb. In my opinion, though the original sounds better.

  • Be interesting hearing the HG with distortion as well.

  • It sounds equally as good with dist. I use it on many amps.

  • can i get the same reverb with holy stain pedal

  • Is there a difference in soundquality between this pedal and the normal holy grail?

  • tasty riff.

  • NiCe!

  • good sound~!!!!!!

  • great review :D im getting this pedal in the next few days and now im excited.

is there a "riff of the day" lesson for what you play in this video? if so can you link it? and if not you should definitely do one, im really digging it

  • great riff !

  • What guitar are you using in this video?

  • Fender Amer. Dlx Ash Strat.

  • thanks for the review but could you help me? I have a Boss reverb pedal and it sounds great through my clean channel but when i want to use it for leads through my mesa rectifier it sounds aweful and inconsistant in all modes. Can you recomend a suitable reverb pedal for leads?

  • The Holy Grail Plus.

  • is the holier grail even better?

  • I haven't tried that.

  • I would hope this would be your response...LOL

  • Do you have the reverb in front f the amp, or in the effects loop?

What you usually want to do when playing with a distorted signal, is to have reverb, delay and similar after the thing which is causing the distortion. That's why if you set your amp distorted, the reverb pedal should be in the effects loop.

  • On this Fender, the verb is in front, but on any head with a loop, I'd put the verb in the loop.

  • It was meant as a reply to paulmckeown who was having trouble with reverb when playing with a distorted tone. ;)

You tone was sweet as always, Dave. :)

  • I wish my name was Dave Weiner :(

  • Yeaah .. nice demo. I enjoy it.

  • hey i really like this video, but i play through an amp that you turn up for natural overdrive. It deosnt have an effects loop, so would a pedal like this sound alright if i had it in front of overdrive?

  • sure, a little bit will do.

  • Thanks man, you've got to be the best pedal reviewer out there, you just get right to the point. Thanks again.

  • thanks Dave for posting your video's , they've been most helpful!

  • hahahah your last name is the best!

  • Uhhh huhuhuhuhuhuhuh...you said...

    Boing!!!

  • what does 'wet' and 'dry' mean??

  • The Blend knob turned all the way is 100% dry, that means none of the effect is heard. As you turn it towards the right, you start to blend in the effect which is making your sound "wet". Wet is just a term used for how much of the effect is being heard. 100% wet means that no direct signal is left, only the effect signal is heard.

  • YEAH...

  • love the 'yeah...' when he changes to hall

  • Does this work wih a bass?

  • if i use a reverb pedal in chain effect, what should come 1st or be the last one, delay pedal or reverb pedal?

  • put the reverb after the delay

  • woah, that was weird, for a second there (0:20) you had both hands in there.. unusual for close-up pedal reviews...hahah

  • Right...

  • lol i thought that was funny!

like "ova hyah and hyah!" as he points

  • so can you plug this in with a regular distortion pedal?

  • sure, although I recommend overdrive pedals rather than distortion pedals. Try to get distortion from your amp.

  • so do you have a specific amp that you might recomend that gives off a good distortion sound??

  • I recommend VHT but it's personal pref. Go try a ton of amps and go with what works best for you.

  • Why do you recommend the overdrive pedals over the distortion pedals?

  • i tested a regular holy grail in the effects loop of a mesa 3 channel dual rectifier today and it muffled the amp so badly, i was disappointed, and I got some nasty feedback with the reverb not even turned up halfway.

  • the HGP is way better. They fixed that problem.

  • I hope they did, that would be awesome... kinda paranoid to buy it unless i can try it. I just want something thats crystal clear.

  • I own the regular Holy Grail, but everytime I crank the verb to get it going deep, it drops my signal significantly and is really bothersome live. Has the Holy Grail Plus taken care of that problem with the blend knob? I just worry that if I blend a lot of dry signal that no matter how deep I go, it won't be audible with the wet stuff behind it.

  • anyone know if the Verbzilla is better than this one?

  • Its all personal preference, check them both out. I personally think I like the verbzilla slightly more mostly because it's octo function is amazing.

  • when you turn this thing off, does it just cut out the effect immediately? if you follow what i mean

  • No the effect doesn't tail.

  • haha thats the word i was looking for. alright thanks man!

  • got riffs?

  • daveweiner . com / store

  • Great great great-review

  • i'm looking to buy a new electro harmonix guitar pedal, any suggestions?? Budget of upto around $80 (£40!!)

    Thanks!!

  • ummmm.. just a shot in the dark.. how about the Holy Grail Plus?

  • Haha good one.

    :)

  • do u think the regular holy grail is enough?

cuz this one is like 180 the regular one is about 110

  • The Plus is def. worth it.

  • Very studio clean sound to it. Really amazing for analog and the price of it. It's a steal I think. It's like the only pedal I heard that actually sound like your there.

  • is the holy grail+ analog or digital? and is this worth the extra &20 over the regular holy grail? i'm going to get a reverb and i have it down to those two so any thoughts would be much appreciated.

  • The HGP is the one to go for. But try them both and decide for yourself.

  • Hi Dave..are you using this in the fx loop of the amp,or straight in? I have a Soldano Avenger head with no loop, and Im wondering how this pedal would sound in line straight to the amps input..thanks

  • This demo was done with the HGP in front of the amp.

  • It's definitely worth it because the options sound so good. The Holy Grail+ is totally analog. The Holier Grail runs at $200 and is analog with reverse gating options if you want something that is a one shot deal in the studio. But it has a limited Amount knob with only 2 choices it seems.

    The Holiest Grail is digital.

  • Does it sound good through an SS amp ?

  • I'm sure it does, but all you're doing is dressing up a pig.

  • what do you mean by that?

  • hahaha dressing up a pig I like that man

since the reverb on my fender deluxe is broken and a mesa triple rec does not have any I have to resort to a rv-5 I like the way this pedal sounds

  • I have a question. My amp is an orange rocker 30 combo, so do you think it will work nice on the dirty channel?

  • probably, give it a try.. decide for yourself.

  • line 6 verbzilla

    or

    EHX holy grail

    or

    Boss rv-5

    idk which one to choose

  • Play them all and then make your decision. But just my opinion from experience, the HG+ is the most natural & musical.

  • whats the size?

  • about 4 by 5 inches

  • sounds really nice and it's not an eyesore like a lot of EHX pedals

  • hey man how does this thing compare to the boss digital reverb and how does it sound with a really heavy distortion

    thankss

  • Much more realistic and less digital than the boss. I don't use heavy distortion, but I'm sure it'll do the job.

  • reckon i cud get one of those t-shirts in the uk?.... i'm a fan.

  • Sure. They're available at:

    daveweiner dot com / store

  • do you get any volume lost on this pedal when turned on?

  • Not at all.

  • I'm in need of a reverb unit, and really only thought about the expensive and bulky tanks. Have you ever played this pedal next to any reverb tanks or other reverb pedals to compare?

  • very nice demonstration! holy grail is a good pedal...but a bi 1-D in comparicom to T-rex roommate or H&K Replex which are tube buffered..not to mention Soldano space box..which is true spring and just insane...but for its price, Holy Grail is the best you can get!! very nice, 5 stars for this demonstration!

  • What does tube buffered mean? I'm looking at a marshall and wanted reverb-any suggestions?

  • this is a stupid question but im just starting out and i was wondering whats the difference between reverb and delay?

  • reverb is acoustics, the way the guitar would sound in a room or hall or whatever, the way it reflects off the walls and comes basck to you. Delay is the actual repetition of the notes. kinda hard to explain sorry if that didn't do it.
