the bit about embarrassing music is so true. i have experienced that too many times now. i just recently made all of my music private on the various websites i was using. i know it's a necessary part of growing as a musician, but i will not make the same mistake. the next piece of music i make public will be good enough and better than everything i made before. anyway, i have never seen anybody explain that as well as she did here.
I mostly agree with what Ms. Clark says about a composer starting out with compositions that are not very good, and then gradually coming up with better material. I think this is true of the conscientious & self-critical composers, and certainly one valid way to better oneself, but as a self-styled song conservationist, I feel compelled to offer an alternative...
@KawhackitaRag ... Instead of "wasting" (writing, then throwing away) a bunch of mediocre songs, why not study as many pre-existing songs as possible (both well-known and obscure; & both songs & composers that you like, & those you do NOT like), critically analyze them, and then carefully note the musical ideas that you like and those you do NOT like, & use these ideas as a springboard for creating and shaping your own material. [...]
@KawhackitaRag [...] My own personal philosophy (which you folks don't have to follow if you don't want to), is that there is so much great music out there already, so many great tunes already composed, that I don't want to write anything unless I'm sure it is the absolute best I can possibly do. [...]
@KawhackitaRag [...] Needless to say, I haven't composed very much, and what is complete has gone through much revision (whether on-paper or in real-time), but I am also not ashamed of it, even the older stuff. I also save little scraps of tunes and also random good ideas for later use.

WOW!- I've been waiting a while but this is the best of these Tour Videos yet. Annie sums up the ARTIST'S DILEMMA (not just in music) so concisely and gives every artist a good reason to keep going, keep trying. "...You just have to go through it..." asserting her commitment- "now you know bitches"... words to live by. F**king Awesome!
I'll be in Vancouver at the right time. I'm so there for the show.
On the side, it's good to see musicians going through the same discouraging process as I do (writing billions of bad songs before getting a few right). It gives me a slight dimmy bit of hope.
Judging by the outfits this appears to be before the Philly show which I was at, and which was absolutely brilliant! I only wish there was a little footage from the show itself.

i love how as they're harmonizing, they all seem to stop what they're doing and then continue on their way again. it's all so theatric-ly mesmerizing
