I used to live in Okinawa. I've been watching some vids on how some open them up. We used to stick a diving knife in the mouth at the bottom and make on 2 inch long cut and actually pull the outside shell with spines and basically crack it open and peel the spines and shell off living you a round ball of golden meat. YUM
This past weekend I went to Redondo Beach and tasted my first fresh live urchin. It was really good. I didn't have much Uni in it. How do you get more uni. Is it how big the urchin is or by pounds? Mine was 1.1lb. Thanks!
Hey there, not sure why yours didnt have much. Each of mine were about a pound, so I paid about $5 or so per urchin. As you can see in the video, mine had quite a lot, and I just picked them at random. Maybe it wasnt a good harvest. Whenever I get the chance I take them from the ocean and I've found that it doesnt really matter how big the urchin is, youre not always guaranteed to have a lot of uni. Maybe wait a month and try it again. Mine were delicious, very sweet and creamy! =)
yeah but do people seriously eat things alive, like how would you like it if the food you was about to eat for example-fish was alive when you eat it would you?
please answer with logic and common sense-in fact i would not even touch it.
@kzhang1234 actually in japan they eat fish alive too..its called sashimi, you can see the eyes and mouth moving while it been eaten, ive never tried it but apparently its very nice...they even swallow octopus whole and alive but there is a choking factor with that one
why not. by nature most food is consumed alive. we just made a standard for ourselves to cook our food. cause we are smarter and can cook food. or kill and prepare the food. that way we can kill most the bacteria/germs before we consume it.
how about i pound you to pieces, that sound like a good idea. i have bashed and crushed many other people trying the same thing you are doing. i have forced them to surrender, but unless you would rather me do that. fine, then i will start to bash you.
exactly. try going to an oyster bar and convince them. mother fucker. i hate peta loving people like u. I will never be vegatarian and i will always eat meat.
I remember loving it from the first moment I tasted it. Back in the islands, it's about five dollars(2.50 American) for about 10-12. I don't really like the ones here in the USA; the ones back home have a much more buttery flavor.
I keep seen people write about how awfull it is to eat this sea urchin alive (or other sea foods) but don't people all over the world eat oysters??? They are eaten alive when eaten raw - to eat a dead oyster is certain food poisoning.
Do you know how mammals feel pain? We have to have special neurotransmitters that stimulated neurons to send signals up tacks of nerves located in our spines, and once these signals reach the brain there are special centers that translate the signal into what you would describe as "pain." Obviously, this not a technical explanation, but you can see "pain" is a concept pertaining to higher organisms. Urchins are like sea stars. They have no brain, spine, or even blood for that matter.
I'll admit, I havent studied animals without a brain in depth, but how do you know they don't feel pain? Pain is a natural response to stop a creature from continuing an action which is damaging to its body. Of course they must have something to say WARNING, WARNING, or else they probably wouldn't have survived this long in nature.
Maybe its not the same way you or I feel pain, but there would be some kind of response.
Anyway, I think you're kind of sick for eating a live creature. Gross.
Firstly, if you actually read my response, I HAVENT studied them in depth.
Secondly, I am well aware how the CNS works in the body of us. My argument was merely that while they do not have the SAME system, how do you know they don't have ANOTHER one? It is completely possible that we have missed it purely because we aren't looking for it.
If you think about it, they must be sentient in some way; they reproduce NON asexually, they retract on touch, they can move. What do you make of that?
Trying sea urchin one time is not enough to develop your palate to its subtle and unique flavor. Personally, I love sea urchin and I eat it every opportunity I get, even when I'm at the beach I will dive for them and eat them on the spot. Urchin is just like foie gras or caviar -- there is a reason people pay big bucks for these types of food. Sea urchin has not caught on in the mainstream as much as some other delicacies, but thats a good thing -- keeps the price down and more for me!!!
@andyzohoury dont quite understand this comment. your saying there is a reason people pay big bucks then you say its a good thing its not mainstream cause it keeps the price down.
@rps13sr he means its a delicacy like foie gras but whereas foie gras has been mainstreamed and is very popular and is therefore expensive, sea urchin has not so it remains reasonably priced which is a good thing if you like it..if there was suddenly a high demand for it then the price would shoot up much like it did for other delicacies
did you read the part where he say we pay big bucks but good thing its its not mainstream cause it keeps the price down. i dont think the price is down. eat it at a sushi resturant and its one of the most expensive tiny piece of food
@rps13sr i wouldnt know i've never eaten it any sushi restaurant near me dont serve it for some reason, i was going from how his comment came across but i suppose it depends on where you get if from..i've heard its expensive in the us but i guess if you can harvest it yourself or if you go somewhere like japan where they have an abundance of it then im guessing it wouldnt be as expensive
ahhhh your not in the us. i' figure hotter climates u can eat those on the cheap. but here the cheapest is at the market an you get about 12 slices for 15 bucks. but those are the special japanese markets that sell kobe beef an such that you can get them.
@rps13sr to be honest i've never even seen it sold anywhere here in the uk but then again ive never actually looked ha i'd imagine they sell it somewhere but im guessing it'll pretty pricey here too as its not that sort after here..cant even buy abalone here i dont think which is a shame as id like to try that
thing is i ate it and loved it. the texture and the flavors. they taste great. maybe just not your taste or your disgusted by the texture or something, Its nothing like loogie. hope your sea urchin you had was still good.
Its in Redondo Beach, near Los Angeles CA. There are a few places to eat just by the water. Really fresh sea food, they just pull it out of the tanks and shuck it or steam it for you right there. Great crab too.
Well, somewhere out there is a brave woman eating Rosey hahaha.
Thanks peepeevagi, I agree with your previous statement that these animals are meant to be eaten raw and they do not have a central nervous system in which to receive the sensation of pain. I mean, when was the last time you heard an oyster scream as it was being shucked? Its such a dumb argument to say, "how would you like if someone ate you?"
