Thanks blackkendoll I am enjoying these wonderful pearls , Joni Mitchell songs. I forgot how wonderful they are.... timeless masterpieces thanks again for sharing!
@MegaWildswan I'm sure it's on here, somewhere... I'd swear I found it. Considered it for playing at my funeral... not that I'm the least bit morbid... *ahem!*
@2006HUGO Certainly one of her best songs on one of her best albums. I suspect all the C&S lovers would take strong issue with you on this point. When push comes to shove, I'd take Song to a Seagull, Clouds, and For the Roses as her best albums, with "Sisotowbell Lane" as her best song, lyrically, because it expresses so well the pastoral dream many of us had back in the late sixties. The love songs on Clouds are great, too, and the several introspective numbers on FtR are also xlnt.
like a heartbeat.....Joni is speaking about unrequited love. electricity is a metaphor for the emotion of love. She is a romantic songwriter. Check out her interview with Charlie Rose for political perspectives albeit 30 years removed from when she wrote these heart-scratching lyrics. A very interesting perspective
@shelleybobelly1 Sorry sherreybobelley listening to the lyric i beleive this song is about a relationship in breakdown not unrequited love as you put it. However a great choice of song from one of my favourite and curiously underestimated album.
@cpfc001 breakdowns in relationships are the outcome of unrequited love....just a perspective I guess. I have a different opinion now after reading both my post & your response to it. I think this song is more political than romantic....I'd even give that assumption more consideratiion
Yes....that is exactly what it is ....she can't fix it up without him so well...she is alone now...and is trying to fix things the way he used to do...he is not there there anymore..she is going to try....but it's not so easy ....
i am an 19 year old african american female...&& i stumbled across Joni Mitchell lasst year..and i must say..i am so in love with all of her music. she is AMAZING!!
this guy knows more about fixing stuff, like most guys do. but the electricity is the same as the feeling they had. but now she cant even fix a toaster. its a tough song to interpret because of her reference to "him" Like it has to be about environmental issues too.
the lyrics of this song are the poetry of modern time. 100 years from now this will still be a jewel. thanks black, you only upload the best of the best.
Joni has said (bitterly enough) that music critics eventually became scornful & dismissive of her later work, and never reconsidered their verdict - I wonder why - her forays into jazz-pop? Spite at her critiques of the NYC upper-class-boho lifestyle, her self-liberation? I had heard that she hadn't kept her musician friends very well - dunno, but she is one of the greats, for her musical quality and outlook if nothing else - joy be yours, Joni!
For the the roses is one of the albums I still play and there is not one poor track on it. What is about women singers with haunting voices? Joni Mitchell, Sinead O'Connor, Annie Lenox, Olita Adams, Maddie Prior, I could listen to them all day.
Elegant, gorgeous, and so Joni. One of my favorites, though it's so hard choosing a favorite song because they are all so wonderful. Simply one of the greatest artists of our time!
she run's all through my circuit's like a heartbeat........... 1989/90The Lake District, wine, candle light, n these wonderful songs . Where I began my own love affair with Joni's sublime music .
This song is one of the many reasons why Joni is so loved among the world's enlightened people. The song is tuned to the rhythm of the heart. Who else can possibly make that kind of soul connection? Even when Joni short circuits, she always returns to the heart. 25 stars!!
One of my favorite songs on a great album. The critic Robert Christgau put it well when he wrote that the songs on this record "reward stubborn attention with almost hypnotic appeal."
This is a lovely, jazzy tune, beautifully Joni's song-writing strengths. It brings up very sweet memories of my own alone-time when I was a young teenager playing this record, and re-playing it. Much to relate to, a very good soundtrack for my life at the time.
Yep! I'm goin' to find one of them thar 180gram records of this, and I'll grab a copy on cd for the rest of the time. Records always sound better dontcha know.
This album and "Court and Spark" were my intro to Joni. All her stuff is amazing, like a great Barolo she just got better and better with age.
