Personally I think the Vintage and the Kiwaya are the best sounding, something about the other two sounds a bit plinky. From this snippet it appears the Kiwaya chimes (sustains ?) a bit more.
Thanks for this comparison. I think the Kiwaya sound a whole lot better than the rest. I've played Style 0s before and was not too impressed, the S-O seams to take a beating whenever it's presented or talked about. But the 5K was a real dissapointment. In one way. I'm looking into a KTS-4 and from that perspective the results from this test is just excellent. ;-)
The Kiwaya wins in my opinion, which is great because I have one myself. I really like the sound of the vintage martin o style as well - very crisp and clear. The modern Martin is in a different league - it sounds terrible in comparison: dull and very unresponsive. The 5K can't be a real one, can it? It sounded good anyway. Thanks.
Hi Ken. We are in full agreement. I like the Kiwaya KTS-4 best of that bunch too. Having said that, I now have another Martin style 0 which I think is better. Yes the 5-K is a Martin, not one of the vintage ones though! The more I play that one, the more it grows on me, as it has a very clear "boy soprano" voice, compared with the mature woman's soprano voice of the mahogany ukes.
They literally sound identical to,me!

all insanely nice pieces. Some look like they've been around a while.

Thanks a lot! I bought a kiwaya KTS-4 by internet this tuesday (Risa, germany, 500 euros incl transport and case). Will get it on friday.
Which strings do you use for it? And where to buy? In Vienna, Austria, Europe there is not so much choice.
On sunday i play a gig with the kiwaya!

I find the best strings on a mahogany uke to be Worth Brown Medium strings. They give a more mellow tone than Aquilla. Enjoy your new instrument!

the vintage martin sounded the best to me. the Kiwaya KTS-4 was number 2. they both sound good.

why are you plucking the strings :( makes it sound clankyy.

Because one can hear individual notes and evaluate the tone. And anyway, I was never into the thrashing thing too much.

Kiwaya sounds relatively thinner in sound. But still sounds good. Thanks for this!
