Deer are not stupid once they grow older they know better. I been around deer for years and many of them are still cautious of their surrounding even though they are comfortable with me. Deer can sense when a something is a threat or danger and most dogs can be danger (not all)

yes it is. deer instinct is to run away as fast as possible (fawns are born with this), which for them, is really fast- much faster than a domestic dog. it's ears are not upright but relaxed, and it looks away from the dog many times- when a predator approaches, they keep keen sight until they run.
