  • Using the stopwatch of my Casio calculator watch and my Samsung Series 5 Chromebook (plugged in) with a 25+ Mbps connection from Shaw Communications. All times start from one New Tab open and end until all flickering and loading completed. I am logged into associated accounts:

    5.46 secs YouTube

    15.5 secs Google News

    14.12 secs Google+

    6.7 secs Facebook

    2.6 secs Google.com

4 secs search of "chromebook" from omnibox

1 sec open New Tab (making two open)

    12.25 secs Gmail

    Google FAILbook

  • Why do I feel like most of the people asking questions are just being dicks in the way they're asking them?

  • The Google Chrome OS Project is successful.

  • What about personal data like documents, music and stuff if my chromebook doesn't have an HDD, do I have an online storage or something? This “everything-is-on-the-web-thing” is kinda confusing to me, I mean what happens if I download something? He sad nothing is local and there is no difference to me if I log into my own device or another one.

  • @PlayWC3 your music will be stored in the cloud, you won't have to download it. your docs as well (use Google Docs) photos, videos et cetera. everything is in the cloud!

  • how long dit this take to upload to youtube xD

  • 1 hour Captions

    1 hour HD

    wow

  • 55:00 ** Owned

  • 00:55 owned

  • Has anyone noticed that mr. Bin has monkey shoes

  • I have yet to see Chrome really perform as fast as people say. I have ran tests here and every site I opened was opened faster in Firefox, some up to 10-20 seconds faster.

  • It's an iPad in laptop form. That's basically what I get from all I've seen, watched, read, heard about this thing but instead of running Apps from the app store you have to pay for, you can just use web apps. Where's the ability to do any real creating with this device? Is there a built in webcam? Can we even attach any devices to it? USB ports? SD card reader? ANY storage on it at all? If it's just a web app device it better be dirt cheap.

  • @Argentium009 there is a later video which explains the features of "USB Ports" "SD, MMC Card Ports" and etc.

  • I don't like this. No privacy. Google will know everything you are doing and have and have full control of your system. I'll stick to Window, Linux, or Mac. I hope Chrome Os fails and just stays a browser.

  • @lnd305

Let's say you're right. Now, since Chrome OS and the browser are basically the same thing, Google will still know you're doing. So it doesn't really address that problem now, does it?

  • @zc456 I'm not describing having privacy while I'm online. There no such thing as privacy on the web. Once your online you subject yourself and the context you view to the web giant companies. That I don't care about. I don't like the fact that Google OS will have to be connected to the web in order to use your hardware, that they will always know what your doing at all times, and that they have all control to the OS.

  • @lnd305

    Linux rullez . . . ;-p

  • I think Chrome OS will better than other OS,include windows.

  • gotta love the accent (thumbs up for indians)

  • apple should make the macbook air with chrome os.

  • @JRADtheawesome1

No that would be a terrible idea.

  • apple should take this and include it in the macbook air. i would definitely pick that up immedietly.

  • @Google When will chrome os, like in the video, be actually released?

  • @AdamantSystems i read an article published on oct 11 that it would be a month... so that's like two weeks. I'm crossing my fingers they won't delay it to january or some shit. They better come out with it soon or they won't get much for christmas sales... unless they're going for the last-minute shoppers?

  • There's a chance this might take off. Just look at Palm's WebOS. Their applications are written in JavaScript, HTML(5), AJAX and among other web technologies.

  • chrome OS is going to a quite epic fail. i really don't think this is what people want in an os and i don't think Microsoft will copy any of this.

  • When Microsoft releases gazelle, google will fade into oblivion.

Google are being investigated by every government in the world, and people are waking up to the restrictions these data miners wan't to control us with.

    LOL@ Google.

  • @onyx23432Gazelle still works in windows OSes which people are fed up with: they're bloated, slow, full of crap you don't need, they break down easily, cost a lot, their applications are ridiculously expensive, etc... Most customers just want to do basic surfing and some functional things (using free web apps) and want to do it quickly. Most customers are not paranoid gamers who think google is out to get them. Chrome os is only a 1.0 test of the market, after that the big guns will come out.

  • Any latest update on the chroms os ??

Haven't heard literally anything ever since the project is launched about 9 months ago.

  • @rajeevrp Yeah! Seriously... I'm jonesing for thing to come out... i read an article published on oct 11 that it would be a month... so that's like two weeks. I'm crossing my fingers they won't delay it to january or some shit. They better come out with it soon or they won't get much for christmas sales... unless they're going for the last-minute shoppers?

  • "Everything should be made as simple(google) as possible, but not simpler(googler)."

    Albert Einstein

  • what if google said hey webusers, now you all have chrome OS and no normal OS anymore youll need to pay us monthly to use it and all your data is locked to google! ?

Chrome OS = google can take control over everyones data.

no-internet = no data anymore for you!

  • The hopeful advantage of this OS is the development of decent Linux drivers. Finally the bastard hardware developers will have a damn financial incentive to start to actually make good ones or drivers to begin with. Another important this is whether the drivers will be open sourced just like the OS.

  • Comment removed

  • This was an Excellent Conference ^-^

  • Guys, they aren't making you buy THEIR hardware. They are simply telling developers and manufacturers, "This is what it's gonna take to run Chrome. We will not support anything but this type of hardware." You will be buying the hardware from the same companies that you buy hardware to run Windows or even your precious Linux.

  • I love watching these, by a hate the dickhead-ness of the presenters when it comes to Q&A things. Everytime I see one of these presentations, they are always really cocky, and just, dicks. I fucking hate it. Besides that, this was a great presentation! I loved it! I cannot wait for it to come out. It will rule!

  • Microsoft will fall... Stupid microsoft! i hate microsoft.... Google Chrome OS is Open Source Microsoft don't like that so they will not copy this... I think they will copy Google tv....

  • The problem is the way google adresses the public, regarding Chrome OS.

It's like: You want to play 3rd party, non-flash games? - You can't!

You want to use software from basic picture editors to 3D modelling? - You can't!

You want to share files with other people? - You can't!

And on top of that, you should buy a computer just for Chrome OS, although you might already have one that already does everything you need.

MS & Apple are smart to advertise products that allow you to do everything.

  • Absolutely excellent talk.

  • @Tobsson well thats what i mean!!!! i kno its freee duuuh,, but i dont call it that way, free free pff what about that component then :p

  • I thought ChromeOS was a good idea. Then they started to ask questions and they just said the same things over and over.

And they got a nice way of tricking people. "We give you a free, fast and secure operating system" but what they kept in the silence is that you need the hardware they sell you before you could even use it. 400$ is not something I'm willing to pay to do less. Since they don't support your local drive at all.. This is fuckin' bullshit ! Use linux if you want a light OS -.-'

  • @Tobsson and just to be really clear here.. I would enjoy those 45 seconds of booting up if I compared to all the HOURS of endless fun they are taking away from a netbook. You won't be able to download movies, play games, rip some cds and listen to music.. Hell, you won't be able to do shit except facebook and mail more or less.. 400 bucks for that.. I rather take a bullet to my head..

  • @Tobsson Good for you using linux :) you can install chrome os on your computer actually by installing hexxeh's, furthermore the hardware Google give include things like SSD's hence the price. Just look at Google Docs, its not yet perfect but give it a few years MS office will be made redundant, EVERYTHING is moving to the web, Quake 2 can be run in the web now too

  • @zikalify I know what you can't and can do on the web. But if I want my computer to work properly with my hardware I need to configure it up that way. And I don't think Google has any proper drivers for my computer soo.. And I don't think they will integrate any either so I will have to buy their hardware in the end anyway..

  • @Tobsson Not if you use hexxeh's chromium os build... put it on a memory stick and u can but its not necessary to install it to ur HDD, works like a charm, always get internet connectivity even on my laptop and graphics seem to work right out of the box

  • image you click on an exe and the window pops up in the panel.

  • @peppeddu. It's Google. It will be supported for life, probably free of charge, seeing as it's focused on the common desktop user and reliability. You probably won't have any problems on the final version.

@mman360. AIM, probably. Zune, probably not. Google will wait for Microsoft to design their own program for it, which they probably already doing. It's a cruel business world.

@lksjfadlk. Eventually, yes. I'm not too sure downloading a movie is in the design considerations. Streaming is though

  • @appleaddict. Google is out to destroy apple and microsoft, and by the looks of it, it's only a matter of time. I highly doubt the two will join forces, but if they do, please read how Google got to their current position to see the future of apple.

@xxSwAmPxx. It's built on Linux, so that's a definite yes.

@kylehuynh88. It's free. Google wants you to use their OS, not pay for it. It's for advertising and data collection, their main two sources of income.

  • Chrome OS will be able to mount a ext4 encrypted partition?

  • @Musiphone google owns youtube so they can do whatever they want

  • Can you please download me an Chrome CD version and send it by poland email???

  • How does Google upload videos over 1 hour 10 minutes long?

  • He says in the video that they are showing the demo one year ahead of full release.

This video is from Nov 09, so maybe end of 2010.

    My guess.

  • so when will they ?

  • Is the operating system free ? if so which site i can download it ? I couldn't find one

  • they haven't released it yet

  • ok...one question....

can i download a movie on to my local memory and watch it in google chrome OS...?

that constitutes an important experience for me...

  • Preview of Google Chrome OS on my page.

  • will chrome os be able to use programs like zune and aim

  • does anyone know if Apple will release a cloud iTunes for Mac, PC, and chrome os? if so I would love google to work with apple!

  • 1:08:07 The security question was completely ignored by the Indian guy!!!

  • @dude8nihon Thanks for pointing this out. But the question was not ignored:

"[...]To third is in terms of trust and so on, I think it's really important that, you know, users have choice. You know, at a higher level, we are fully open, so everything we do there is transparent to at least developers who can educate users about what's happening. The second is, you know, we--users are always in control. You know, you can decide what to do[...]"

    And the answer satisfies me.

  • the first guy really talks too much!!!

  • Interesting, a computer that works only if Google says so, and it doesn't even print!

Thanks but no thanks, to me a leash is still a leash no matter how pretty you make it.

Besides, Microsoft and Apple took 20 years to develop their own OS to be what it is today.

And those guys wants to do it overnight with a souped up version of Linux

    Good luck!

  • @peppeddu haha so true!

  • you all know what is gonna happen don't you... Microsoft is going to copy all the new ideas/innovations and come out with a new Windows OS that does the same thing... only problem for them is that they will want money and ChromeOS is free.... then again... they (microsoft) will probably copy all these ideas but make it so it doesn't restrict you.... for eg: Games will have to run on the platform... Cloud + Local media... best of both worlds... I still think Microsoft will overcome this obstacle

  • @kaddy01980 CHROME OS IS NOT FREEE U MORON where da hell did u hear dat hhaha, The internet browser Google Chrome is FREE! but ''Chrome OS'' isnt!

  • @PETKKKO ummmm. you know nothing. I suggest you do more research....

Chrome OS uses the Linux kernel and the entire project is completely OPEN SOURCE and FREE.....

  • @kaddy01980

He's never used Linux I'm sure of it...

He also doesn't know Darwin is an open source and that it's the core of all Apple software... It's best not to talk to stupid people...

  • @maw88ify ahahahhahaahah. Very True

  • @PETKKKO ehrm.. Didn't you watch the movie? It's fuckin free for everyone to use.

The problem is that their components isn't. So you still got to pay up to use it. As I said in my standalone comments.. This is fucking ridicolus and stupid...

  • @kaddy01980 local+cloud? that already exists, its called a laptop...

  • @zikalify

lol wtf??? Get a Clue Mate

  • @kaddy01980 I have a clue, a laptop or desktop pc has local storage for games and other files right. Also you have a web browser which gives you access to your files on the cloud. Also you have devices that can boot into a cloud OS and also boot into Windows. So yh.

  • @zikalify

Mate.... Chrome OS will not support hard drives... but it will support Solid state memory..... ALL data on ChromeOS is in the Cloud. You need to read up

  • @kaddy01980 I KNOW!!! i was replying to 'they (microsoft) will probably copy all these ideas but make it so it doesn't restrict you.... for eg: Games will have to run on the platform... Cloud + Local media... best of both worlds... I still think Microsoft will overcome this obstacle'

  • @zikalify

    ahhh ok. you wasn't specific

    cool

  • bring our hellish microsoft back to earth! it began it all end will have to end it all ...

google is cool but this goes too dam far!

Chrome OS = google can take control over everyones data.

no-internet = no data anymore for you!

  • @kaddy01980 with IE? shit no thanks :)

  • Great Indians...Sharp mind.......

    India Rockssss

I m Proud to be an Indian.......

    Keep it up Guyes........

  • Google chrome os is made from Linux that was started in United States ... Not that it matters... Linux belong to the world ... Linux is about freedom, and people from every where in the world has worked on it... Look up Linux Ubuntu , or Linux Mint , or openSUSE, Fedora, Gentoo, Debian, Slackware >>> 1,000 Linux is made by people all over the world... Google just added to the collection.

"Google Chrome is a Linux Kernel Based Operating System"

  • Obviously you don't use Linux it for a living.

The real cost of Linux comes when something doesn't work and you need assistance.

A.K.A. machine downtime, hardware compatibility, expensive support system, and zero security updates for older version.

    To me this isn't free it's bait-and-switch.

  • @peppeddu

    I didn't say free

I said freedom << "open source"

But yes most Linux distribution are free in price as well...

Windows ,and Mac both have Zero security updates for older versions... Try getting new updates for Windows 98 "There isn't any new updates" Zero ... and you paid money for it.

  • With Microsoft, Oracle, etc. you know, before you buy, when the product won't be supported anymore.

With open source there is not such thing, you have to rely on someone willing to help you or pay 50+$ per hour for support.

From a purely financial point of view, to me it's way cheaper to use a paid OS, and I can use the extra time/money to do things I enjoy the most.

To me, that's what I call freedom.

  • You do understand that many big name companies use Linux, and BSD right ? and they make money off of it...

and that Mac OS core is Darwin that has a lot of BSD code in it. So the core of all Apple software is open source... so if you have an Ipod ,Ipad, Iphone, Mac book you are using open source . :\

  • I agree, even Microsoft uses open source, all the TCP/IP stack has been lifted from BSD.

    My point is another though:

Many people confuse free with freedom.

To me the most important thing is installation time and machine uptime. If I have to spend days to install, let's say, tribxox, buy dedicated hardware and finding 0 help when that thing trows me an error, I say no thanks

I stick the Office Communicator CD in the drive and I'm done. Sure I pay but it's a ten years uptime with minimum hassle

  • On another note do a search on youtube for the "Linux ELSE smartphone" I'm not sure you have seen it, but it's very nice look Phone... Take a look if you get some time.

  • @maw88ify you obviously dont understand the meaning of the word open-source! ...... . open source doesnt mean its an apple app ,fool! example: Foobar for windows is open-source app as well. read with eyez instead of your ass :p 2wordzz OPEN - SOURCE wich means THE SOURCE IS OPEN , so people get the option to EDIT the application.

and by the way IPHONE SYSTEMS "AINT NO OPENSOURCE' fool

  • @PETKKKO

The ideas behind HTML5 were pioneered in 2004 by the WHATWG; HTML5 incorporates Web Forms...

    Who is WHATWG

The WHATWG was founded by individuals from Apple...

Apple refuses to put flash on the iPhone, and iPad

Money is made from open source...

QUOTE Apple's web site "Apple believes that using Open Source methodology makes Mac OS X a more robust, secure operating system, as its core components have been subjected to the crucible of peer review for decades. "

  • @PETKKKO

To quote your dumb ass "iPhone Aint no opensource fool" WRONG

Darwin is an open source POSIX-compliant computer operating system released by Apple Inc. in 2000. It is composed of code developed by Apple, as well as code derived from NeXTSTEP, BSD, and other free software projects.

Darwin forms the core set of components upon which Mac OS X, Apple TV, and iPhone OS are based.

  • @maw88ify dont make me laugh !! Windows98 aint in the stores anymore so how did you pay money for it? :p Microsoft warned on time about the end of 98 updates.

haha its like trying to update Windows386 in 2010 haha moron

  • @tusharkut24 you suck my balls

  • Sorry I Do Not Like This Kinda O/S For A Start Anything We Download Or Do Google Is Always Watching You And Keeping A Eye On You Even More So You Can Not Do ANYTHING Without Google Knowing

  • Awesome!!

  • ppl have been always making fun of indian because they are very uncool..i know some people..but i really like them because they are one of the smartest people on earth..they give thier 100% in their education..the whole IT industry is taken by indians

they know how to make good money..no wonder they even in top rich lists

  • I also think it's a huge mistake to not make it installable on hard drives... I agree that flash is faster, BUT if you already have a netbook and you actually want to support Google Chrome OS, why on earth would they want to stop you??

  • I couldn't agree with you more.....

  • What's the point of building a "bigger netbook" ... that would be called a "notebook" and they already exist from 12-17"+ ... people who choose to buy netbooks do so because of their small size, lightweight, and portability. I bought an 8.9" netbook this summer, and when I went to buy a second one, I was disappointed to find out that all my local electronics stores only carried 10.1"

  • I don't want bigger netbooks! I already think the 10" ones are TOO big for netbooks, I want something I can practically throw in my purse and easily carry everywhere... Google, please keep this in mind!

  • Very slick....but don't forget that this will mean that Google will have oversight over all your data/preferences and you are delusional if you believe they are not going to sell that and make money off you.

  • I did not like the response to the privacy question about the Chrome OS (or any google service in general) at 1:08:07 - as a shareholder, simply saying "it's your choice" to use the service without giving reassurances of the integrity of Google simply leaves an opening for competitors to grab.

  • No Desktop applications is a bad idea. It saves you some trouble granted, but lack of reliable internet is a huge problem, especially in my area.

  • I agree that we should move the Internet a little bit more towards Web 2.0 and HTML5 but Cloud Computing is just a insane idea. It just won't work due to varieties of services, quality, and speed.

  • Indians Rock

    -Raj (RealBeatsWEB)

  • Indians are so smart, thts the thing i like about them!

  • evolution. bye bye windows

Microsoft becomes a web app developer :)

maybe they will write a dos app CMD!

  • Until the Internet and it's services are completely reliable in speed and connections, Cloud Computing such as Google Chrome OS won't be "evolution."

  • What?!

  • Everything in the cloud?

    Really?

    Where is it stored?

Possibly open to google at all times?

    Bit suspicious to me.

I rather like the desktop apps,

though everything running of your browser with the same power as a desktop app, would be very interesting.

Though an OS in a browser looks very limiting, just "too compact"

Though if it works, I wouldent mind trying it.

  • is there something like office word?

  • Google docs

  • thanks.

  • thanks.

  • office 2010 will have web-app versions.

  • HOLY CRAP 2 hour video

  • 4:15

  • LOL

Chrome OS is Linux based, moron

  • Do you know the what a "Kernel" is?

    Ubuntu is linux BASED

    Red Hat is linux BASED

    Slackware is linux BASED

    Debian is linux BASED

    SuSE is linux BASED

    Mandrake is linux BASED

Chrome OS has the same thing that this others above have: The same KERNEL

  • The kernel manages the system resources.

  • Hum... so your are windows user right ? An drag/drop/Click engineer? you are right linux are not good for you! To use linux you must know how a computer works, no how to click or reinstall the entire system when an problem surges. But in the capable hands linux is much faster than any windows version, linux based= LINUX, please stay on windows 7, aka windows vista tunned!!

  • I do indeed know how a computer works, and I used Linux to some success. But you are right, I am a Windows user, and like most Windows users I am used to things "just working"

But the thing I hate about Linux is almost everything is programmed for either Mac or Windows, and things like WineHQ emulate Windows extremely slowly and don't support most applications.

(And I have a vendetta against Mac so I'm sticking with Windows)

And Vista isn't all that bad, it just needed a little tuning.

  • All operating systems work differently. Saying "Until you use Linux, you won't know how to use a computer" is irrelevant.

Although Linux is a very stable Operating System, not many third-party programs support it. On top of that, due to being a open-source Operating Stystem, modifications can be made by anyone who can program well enough. Many programmers of Linuxs' version focus too much on UI extravaganza.

  • Can't even make your own operating system. you are moron!!!

  • So you are 'REALLY' working on it ? I know you 'REALLY' liked it. But 'REALLY' I am telling the truth. (sorry I like pulling legs)

    Nice presentation. Thanks.

    -dj

  • Indian FTW!!!

  • this is really really really really really really great right, stop using this please for god sake.

  • indian nerd !!

  • i think he's cool xD

  • It's interesting how they DID not answer the question of whether Chrome OS users will or will not be able to use cloud data syncing out of Google.

  • @josvazg I noticed this too. Kind of pissed me off since I had the same question during the talk, and found it to be probably the most important question asked.

  • y not?

  • I have been interested in a netbook for awhile now. I think I may just wait for this. Will be perfect as an extension of my computer as a student.

  • The presentation slides look like they were done by hand - do you have any idea how they did it? Did they just make it on paper and scan it?

  • Congratulation, I hope Google will do better as past. Go ahead ...

    !!

  • well i have found some things to consider...

from what i understand of the os it will have a hard time to run blizzard games for most of it is a "buy at store and install" type which does not. so to expand audience by 12milion+ is to make it so that the software developers for blizzard and other like companies to quickly take their code and make an app for chrome requiring users to buy a key to run the games.

  • 4:22 yay yay yay yay yay. Chrome for linux!

  • chrome is linux

  • I know that. I use linux.

  • Theres a beta release of chrome for linux. Search it up on Google. Not the Chromium project

  • You can already download the developer build.

  • surprisingly, it was shwon that chrome browser will make use of graphics just after microsoft announced use of D2D in ie9. Now the question is, do google have some proofs to show that chrome is using graphics like microsoft demonstrated at PDC2009. If not then I will be forced to think that it is a stolen idea from microsoft...!!!

  • I just don't understand why there's so much excitement around Chrome OS. It does not bring anything new on top of existing Chrome browser.

In fact, anyone can create their own 'Chome OS' by getting Linux kernel, compiling Chromium browser, and making Chromium open on startup.

  • True except for everything that you just said Does a normal computer automatically backup all your settings vid a cloud from the initial purchase? Could you actually give a Windows computer to a complete retard and say "don't break this", you couldn't. Google Chrome OS is trying to bring some user friendliness into computing, to help protect the computer illiterate and enhance the user's experience by reducing waiting times and enforcing a stronger build of security...

  • ...and authority through their operating system. Not only that, Google Chrome will implement the usage of graphics cards into more computing tasks, such as flash games and other hardware intensive processes. All in all, it's not a bad idea. Only criticism would be the question of price in the not so distant future. Also, where the hell did some of my punctuation go?

  • Nevermind my last comment. It was wrong because I didn't watch the entire video. Next time I'll be more careful before posting comments.

  • Don't worry mate, initially I thought the same as you! <3

  • Because if you watched or listened to the entire thing. It wasn't just about it being a browser, it was about ease of use, recovery, your own personalization. All will need is the internet and a gmail account to access our personal information from anywhere.

  • Yes, I confess. I didn't watch the entire video. So my last comment was incorrect. Next time, I will try not to post comments before watching the entire video.

  • Lol I didnt say you couldn't just make sure you know what your talking about before you post something

  • Along with the good points Larmour and warpurlgis1 said, I also wanted to add the fact that post people don't know what Linux is, how to compile the code, dual boot, etc. The Chrome OS is more focused around being a netbook than anything else. Heavy gaming, video editing, movie and music download, all that will require a normal computer, but if you want a netbook that hosts most of its apps online all centered around its browser, Chrome OS looks like a hopeful option.

  • chrome is open source. Theoreticaly users should be able to make every program they want for it (evne offline); they could even re-program the whole system... Belive me there will be no fine.

  • at 53:40

there is something he sayed no comments.. what was the question?

  • the dude asked if they are working with microsoft to support silverlight :P hahaha ofcourse not lol :P silverlight brrrr...anyway interesting video, nice to see the journalists asking important questions :)

  • I think they muted the mic sound. Hmm...

  • Damn, Dont support silverlight.. please google.. dont bring the worst virus into your OS.

  • I dont understand why poeple are concerned about security and privacy in regards to their data when most people seem to trust companies of the likes of google/ms/yahoo with all their emails which are stored in their massive storage systems. The advantage is you dont have to worry about data loss/corruption and plus with the whole scale security features they implement it will be next to impossible for a hacker to get into thir system.
