If you've traded in the petrol car for a diesel then it can be a suprise how loud diesels still are even today.
The only sound that would concern me is a hard metallic sound rising with the rev band, other than that i wouldn't worry, just keep an eye on oil and water and service and thats it.
yup sounds pretty normal for those engines. My friends has a 89 1.6TD and it sounded just like that all the time. Drove it to 480,000+ and then had to replace the injectors.
just think of a peckerwood knocking on a pole thats a good description the best i know how to describe a rod knock that and a squeaking with the knock only if the bearing has spun
sounds like a rod thumping cause it has a thump to the knock jus a guess i just know what a rod sounds like knocking if it were spun it would be squeaking
My friend has a 80 vw rabbit diesel and has been running like that for years. He's gone on long road trips and never had a problem. I think it's normal considering it's a diesel.
also look at rocker arms and push rods. my 93 ford diesel did the same thing and them blew up through the valve cover and hit the hood. the cause was a rocker arm no tight to push rod. i fixed it and no problems
If the engine is cold, then it can be pistons. They have too much clearance between the cylinders until the engine warms up so they rattle slightly just when the crank moves up from BDC and down from TDC. Its common enough so nothing to worry about. But if the engine is at operating temperature, you could have too much clearance on your big end bearings. Ask a car mechanic anyway just to be sure because I work with motorbikes.
these are possible signs of bad timing of the valves, or pump too advanced...

Do you know where that sound comes from? Rod bearing? Lifters? Timing chain/belt?
