Are you referring to John Lennon? He didn't only sing backing vocals but was infact a major contributor to one of Paul's previous bands. Unfortauntely, he died in a bizarre hair combing accident in 1987.

I think you'll find, if you check the facts that John Lennon was not only in The Beatles but was more than a backing singer. Also, he died in 1987 in Paris in a freak hair combing accident. What a shame, he as an excellent drummer.
