  • @bjurs It's just you. :-/

  • Why is everyone saying this is a bad performance?? He's singing in tempo with the music, he's perfectly in tune(as usual), and it seems as though he is accurately portraying this character. So why all this cynicism and criticism? I don't get it.

  • @munvig77 You have GOT to be kidding me! Poor thing, you must be DEAF.

  • His voice is unique and beautiful.

  • I'd really like to hear Russell Watson singing this.

  • Oh, no! It is really terrible to listen to this, only Tommy Körberg can do this amazing song

  • Oh!

  • Just me or does he rush the lyrics way more then the original?

  • I love Grobans voice...but please!! Stay away from this song!! Noone can sing this except from Tommy Körberg. Noone. Here there is no wmotion, no power, just nothing but a sweet voice that doens't fit the song at all. And how come the word "heart" just falls flat in the beginning? Listen to TK and learn for christ sakes!

  • Chess original album version (1983) with Tommy Körberg to compare...

    [ watch?v=MYfpcddXWxk ]

  • Groban is a great singer but hes nothing compaired with Tommy

  • Stephen Brandt-Hansen kicks Josh's butt on this song.... Tommy remains king....

  • Tommy is the original singer, no one in th world sings it like him. But nice try Josh Groban.

  • Josh is great, but Tommy does this so much better.

  • How come No one talks about David Carrol's version? Listen to him and then you will forget about Korgbergs. yes... I said it

  • @horerfandod3 --------------------> Search for "Anthem (Recording season) . <----------------------

Yeah i know, the person who uploaded it spelled "session" wrong ;-]

It's from a documentary about the original Chess. Trust me, THAT is THE BEST version of Anthem you will ever hear. And yeah, it's Tommy Körberg singing it.

  • @Drygore I already have listened to it. Personally, He has done Better after that session. I was just stating that nobody ever talks about David Carroll's version. I respect Both JB and TK. But I personally prefer David Carroll.

  • Tommy Korberg is so much better, still i adore Josh Groban.. But this is Korbergs song.

  • All Jai McDowall fans, listen to Tommy Körberg sing Anthem, then you´ll know Jai still has a lot to work on. He is good but not that good and to relate it to this Josh Groban video I would say that Josh is a fantastic singer but Tommy Körbergs voice is better for this song

  • All Jai McDowall fans, listen to Tommy Körberg sing Anthem, then you´ll know Jai still has a lot to work on

  • Who CAN'T love Josh Groban singing "Anthem" ?

  • Tommy körberg > Josh Groban

  • Jai was great. Rhydian is probably the best at anything from musicals!

  • Agree, Jai owns this one!!!

  • Jai Mcdowall brought me here!

  • Maybe nobody did until last weekend when Jai McDowall sang it on Britain's got Talent. A standing ovation and an incredibly moving and powerful performance unsurpassed by any other version on You Tube.

  • Babe <3 I melt every time :'3 <33

  • Why are most of the comments about someone who isn't even in the video? If you like another version better then just watch that one instead

  • I like Tommy Körberg too, but I think Josh's combination of sweetness, power, and restrained emotion are incomparable. His 2008 version on DVD is spectacular.

  • Of course he sounds good, but I prefer Michael Ball's version

  • @morrigoon

By "he", do you mean Josh Groban, Tommy Korberg, or someone else?

  • @morrigoon Oh good, someone who isn't gaga about Korberg!

  • i have Chess on DVD. once i found out that Josh was in it i had to have it. my two favorite things, Musicals and Josh Groban!

  • Dear Josh Groban, I love you. haha

  • You guys. come on. really???? Josh Groban is good. Tommy Korberg is great. Anthony Warlow is a God. There isn't a voice like Anthony Warlows that has ever graced our earth.... Josh Groban is good, but just average compared to all of our Broadway stars. And if anyone disagrees with me about Anthony Warlow, please just listen to the entire Jekyll and Hyde cd, preferably in a nice quiet place, all by yourself.....

  • @jasonmdt I am a big fan of Josh Groban. I have never heard of Anthony Warlow or Tommy Korberg. Will sample some of their work. If they are nearly as good as Josh they must be great singers. Thanks .

  • @waynegreer72 Go listen to the link "Tommy Körberg sings Anthem" in the related vids to the right -->

  • @zyffe I did listen to Tommy Korberg sing "Anthem" and thought he was an very good singer singer. Also sample music of Anthony Warlow and thought he was an amazing singer. I think they are all very gifted performers in their own right and prefer not to try to determine who is the better singer. Thanks,

  • Josh Groban has the best voice of anyone I've ever heard--by far. I hate him. :-) The guy is simply remarkable. And he has a much stronger voice than Tommy Korbergs has.

  • This is one of the few songs in history which points out the futility of national borders and man-made labels. It has been the cause of many wars. Perhaps it will take an alien invasion to make us unite as "the world".

Let man's petty border tear themselves apart.

As for Josh groban's voice, truly amazing!

  • Josh Groban is a wonderful singer in his own right and his original songs are wonderful... but, this song was written for Tommy Körbergs voice, and suits him perfectly. I've listened to all versions of this epic tune, and no one even comes close to Körberg. After all, he is the original, all other are just covers or interpretations.

  • dreamy and beastly all in one package go josh p.s. I love the new single

  • Tommy is the one and only for this song. Groban is a good singer, but Tommy Körberg has such a wonderful, varied vibrato and magnificent depth and texture to his voice.

  • I'm sorry but Jerry Hadley all the way for this one.

  • you guys need to check out Michael Ball's version

  • It's so fascinating comparing this early rendition with the more recent ones, the way his voice has evolved with age.

  • I like both Korberg and Groban. Not familiar with Stig Rossen

  • love josh groban, I constantly listen to chess <3

uploaded my friend singing anthem on this channel, she's amazing

  • I don't understand why everyone likes Tommy Korberg's version better, it lacks depth, timbre, and resonance, I think the people who say that come to this video without openess already thinking that Tommy Korberg is better and only halfheartedly listen to Josh Groban's version. You can thumbs down this all you want but its my opinion.

  • @XOOOOElizabethOOOOX I like both versions. Josh's voice is not as mature as Tommy's, so I still prefer Tommy. It's a little ridiculous to say that Korberg doesn't have depth and resonance, when his voice is the height of those qualities. Korberg has excellent control and does not fall into too much vibrato the way Groban does sometimes. I don't say that to put down Josh, because I like him. But excessive vibrato is actually a cop-out, it's harder to hold a note long and pure without it.

  • @stevethepirate78 I agree with you totally, vibrato is good in certain area of the song, but it is really hard too control it, when you have to hold a long note... are you a singer yourself? btw, yes, I love tommy's version on this one.

  • @gbobby49 Yes, I was a singer when I was younger and took vocal lessons for several years Now I just sing in the shower.

  • @stevethepirate78 I just started singing about over a year ago. I just learn "I know him so well" from (chess), and now I found this one. guess what...I am going to get this one under my belt, hehe.

  • Neither Josh Groban nor Tommy Körberg can keep up with Stig Rossen. Groban has the warmth and breadth but lacks the power - runs out of air far to fast. Körberg has the capacity, but lacks Groban's full and warm tone. Körberg is a typical pop singer. Stig Rossen has it all! His voice may not be quite as warm as Groban's but his ability to hold his note without loosing strength or adding vibrato is fantastic. Listen to his ending of "Anthem" or "bring him home".Rossen rules!!

  • @sjuro54 I agree entirely. Rossen and Warlow are my favorite versions of the song. The way Rossen hits that note at "where would I START?" (I capitalized start to show what note I was refering to) is absolutely amazing!

  • @sjuro54 To say that Körberg is a pop singer is probably as wrong as it gets....

  • ya josh or a pretty much unknown hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ill take josh live over tommy

  • what is Chess about?

  • @neryux Chess' story has been revised many times so there are many versions of the plot. Generally: the lead, a woman named Florence, is an American chess player's manager but ends up falling in love with his Soviet opponent (most versions of the story take place in the 80s) and drama and politics ensue. It's a good show, one of my favorites -- some really excellent music and most versions of the plot aren't bad either :) This song is about the Russian deciding to leave his country.

  • Wow...my school's recent choir show had this song in it and it's crazy to see someone as amazing as Josh Groban singing it now. But I have to admit...my choir did just as an amazing job. :3

  • @kyostears89

Tommy Körberg, the making of Chess (watch?v=MYfpcddXWxk)

  • amazing version love it, what do you think of mine looking for tips :D /watch?v=TUtQXEpUNhA

  • While it is true that Tommy Körberg.did a fantastic job on this song, Josh Groban brings his own interpretation as well as his splendid Baritone voice to Chess. It is what it is two wonderful voices singing a great song enjoy the differences instead of having a pissing contest to see who's favorite is better....

  • @TheSnowfire55 I agree. I think the only one problem is that maybe Josh was too young for this song. He was 21-22 years old here. In 2008 when he played again in Chess he was more powerful in this song. But not only in this song, he was brilliant in every minute of the play.

  • Way better than the original singer/s. The greatest!

  • he's nothing compared to körberg.

  • This is good, but Groban never really touches Körberg... I'm sorry to dissapoint all the Groban-fans, but that's just the truth. The intonation, his deep parts, tonal duration, everything is just one step down from the great Tommy. Don't get me wrong, it's still great by Groban.

  • WOW! What a gorgeous voice

  • This is truly the greatest rendition ever. With Josh's beautiful, clear, rich, majestic, powerful voice, this song is finally given justice and recognition worldwide that it for so long deserved. Thank you so much Josh and it's an honor for me to hear you sing.

  • @grobanfan2: And the next thing you'll say is that «Anthem» is an american tune (and not Swedish), and that the 100% Norwegian Rolf Løvland (Secret garden) didn't write «You raise me up»? Thus, why the hell can't you clean your trailer-home and caravan instead of talking shit! Americans believe that Paul Anka wrote My way - Wake up! It was popular in France long before Anka stole it, check this out: watch?v=bMoY5rNBjwk Fucking Inbreed!

  • Does anyone know when this was?

  • Very magnificent and impressive! Josh's voice and performance is way far greater than Korberg, waldrow or any other singers.

  • OMG Josh Groban is a very good singer! He's so great. :)

  • Seriously. It's like an emotionless corpse if reading sheet music. I like Josh Grobin, but ho is it possible to sing such a passionate song so passionatelessly.

  • @oowowaee I agree with you 100%. He sang it well but no emotions, no passion.

  • Is it possible that Josh was singing this for the first time? Maybe, he is learning to sing it cleanly. I hope he improves singing this song with passion. The song is lowered to suit his range.

  • Some woooohooing sound fucks up the ending of the song : / Other then that i think he sings good! But not like Tommy Körberg OFC!! he is the only Anthem Singer !

  • Yes, Tommy Körbergs version of Anthem is the best thing ever.

  • This is crap!! Usually i think Groban is a good singer but with this song he fails big time. Only Tommy Korberg should be allowed to sing Anthem.

  • Korberg???????

    Oohhhh, you mean Körberg :-)

  • @Bearn78 agreed

  • Nope, Tommy is much better. Sounds like Josh gets no "flow" and wants to get the song done as quick as possible! Still good though!

  • Josh Groban likes a blousy alcoholic :)

  • i love josh groban but nobody sings this like tommy körberg does. he is the real thing! :D

  • @LinneaWahlberg Tommy sings through his nose as if he had a clamp on.

    Josh sings great and clean.

  • @LinneaWahlberg Da burde du lyssna på Jan Werner Danielsen! <3 :)

  • ONly tommy should sing this song, there's is no version that compares to his.

  • With all due respect to Josh, no one sings this beautiful song like Tommy Körberg. He gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

  • @eliasnoreland Josh is the coolest person to walk the Earth. Nuff said.

  • phwoar....

  • Hey, this is pretty good. But I much prefer the Anthony Stewart head Rendition for the startrek convention in germany. I'm no trekker, but I looked it up and I thought it was just wonderful. I love the way he slided in some parts and wasn't so "Brodway" but more threw in his own flare. You guys should check it out, its' a great rendition, though the singing doesn't start till about.. 1:05 on the other video. Anyway, Kudos, Josh.

  • Much prefer the Anthony Warlow version over either this OR the Korberg. Just because someone is the original doesnt mean its the best. :)

  • Well of corse not, but don´t you think there´s a reason Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Tim Rice choose Tommy Körberg in the first place? It´s because he were (and to a great extent, still is) one of the greatest singer avalible at the time.

  • He is good but cant beat the original Tommy Körberg. No one can sing it like he does the feeling and passion he puts in it is fantastic

  • my school chorus is singing this!

    he sounds amazing!

  • i don't think he is worse he is just a bit different i would say they are equally good performances

  • Josh is good but not just as good as Tommy Körberg :P

  • Finally someone who understands :)

  • he sings wonderfully.

what exactly is this song? :)

  • It's Anthem from the musical Chess. This is the 2003 version. He did it too in 2008 in Chess in concert.

  • ohh! i see.

he was in the musical? great! thanks!!!

    Cheers

  • This song is gorgeous, and I love Josh Groban's voice, but I have to say that I prefer Daniel Boys version.

  • nice... nice!

  • My personal thanks to the arranger for removing the electric guitar!

This is so much bether orchestrated!

  • We all have our favourite versions, there is nothing wrong with that. But I was excited to learn that Groban performed this brilliant song. I really do like him. Thanks for sharing and 5 stars

  • Those who says his singing sucked must be tone death or something...

  • i saw this today form my choir teacher :D

  • WOW josh groban is amazing but my fav. version of this song is when Michael Ball does it :)

  • Amazing performance by Mr. Groban. He's so stunning to observe working. And the choir backup is wonderful. Wow. *cheers*

  • Josh, you have an amazing powerful voice !!!

    you are so adorable talented,handsome guy ! ! !

Keep up the good job !

  • Spoken like someone who truly does not have a clue what they're talking about.

  • ha wow yea OKAYYY

  • Josh is good but I have to say Tommy Körberg does the best version of this

  • I like this version more than Tommy Körberg's.

  • This is good! no doubt about it! But, Tommy Körberg does it better! :)

  • I'm interested to hear your uneducated, completely unintelligent reasoning behind what you said.... first, what is your definition of a "real singer"? And second, how is he terrible here? What was possibly wrong with this performance?

  • Nice. But it's still Tommy Körberg's song, and he still does it better, even at 60+. He has a bigger, darker, more passionate, more powerful and much more manly voice which suits the song better. In my never suitable humble opinion :-)

  • Josh Groban is amongst my favourtes but this song i have to give to Tommy Korberg and him alone as in my opinion does the absolutely best version. Both of them are as sent from heaven.

  • The best version is with Tommy Körberg!!!

  • Thanks RickardFromSweden, I'd never heard his version and went looking because of your comment. A confirmed Grobanite, I loved Tommy's performance; it's a fave and we're so lucky to have both of them to spin us in their magic.

  • The best performance of this song, PERIOD.

  • I love it when he sings this song.

  • Love this song its absolutely amazing the intro just coming through is just awesome, ive just uploaded me singing from a concert thanks josh for tips great stuff

  • Beautiful! (Tear!) :')

  • He does a good job ; but of all versions I found on youtube , I like Tommy Korberg best . I'd like to hear Andrea Bocelli sing this .

  • He is just incredible.

  • I agree with you Jaallee92.

    Tommy Körberg rules!

  • try listen toJan Werners version:)

  • I love this version :)

  • i love anthem song because of JOSH.

  • This is good but Körberg is the king of this song and will always be. PERIOD!

  • best song ever!

  • What is this from?

  • It´s from chess ;o)

  • I like it better on Swedish I must say, but still I love this too

  • Groban gör den inte bättre än Körberg!

  • josh groban does this the best!

  • lovely version of the song. It is so sad, though, that everyone seems to have forgotten the Broadway version of "Anthem" performed so beautifully by the late David Carroll. Unlike other versions, David's brings me to tears.

  • Yeah, Tommy Körberg's version is excellent. But Josh Groban is just as good.

  • Kørberg destroys Groban anytime!

  • What an irrelevant comment.

  • tommy korbergs original version is better!

  • Tommy Körberg for me, every time.

  • yeh...groban is very good..but there is somthing about korberg...anywho : )

  • I think Tommy körberg is better! :)

But josh groban sing also beautiful, but i dont think he is so special!

  • Comment removed

  • He is

  • How old was he? 21? He looked so young in this vid..

First time I heard anthem is Mr Groban's version (2008), I think its understandable that I like his version much (though I listened to others' versions as sugested by some ppl :d ). They all good, but his th best JMO

  • If you search for "Bjørn-Erik Ulvatne" or "Bjørn-Erik+Anthem" you can see and hear my version of this beautifull song if it is of any intrest ;) Sadly its not the whole song, made with some strange cuts just so it could fit the program ;) But you will anyways witnes the way I love to perform this song ;) Hope you enjoy

  • i've looked around and that korberg dude is by far the best.

  • this is the best i've ever heard josh sing live. very, very good.

  • if you like this version check out brad robins too

  • Hell with korberg anthony warlow had so much emotion in this song its amazing, and you can't disagree, and i bet korberg didn't have throat cancer and then still be able to sing a belting song such as this one

  • When it come's to the Benny and Björn they alway's make the music around the singer

thise musik was made to fit Tommy as a clove

look on there production with soprano's like

Agnetha/Frida etc, So it's totaly impossibly to compering only, they are super pedant's and

Josh Groban is super good ore he simply didenth do the act.

  • Anthony isn´t even worthy mentioning with Körberg. Tommy is a God!

  • amen

  • I LOVE josh! He did such a good job then, as he did now. He was so young, I can't beleive its been so long since this last performance! But i gotta say their both really good, but i guess i'm more partial to his newer version. Either one is wonderful to me! Cant wait for the DVD!
