  • The horror

  • MAN, i was 3 years old back then, and i worked at Mcd's when i was 17 for almost a year... good video

  • @myR12006 Thanks!

  • HOLY?!

This is 1990? That camera must of been considered high end in that day :O

  • i work at a mcdonalds now

  • @ILoveMyMareSunny Hope you have a lot of good people working there like I did!

  • @RogCBrand i do some of the managers dont like me though

  • My store still has that shake machine so it's at least 20 years old my franchisee is to tight to buy a new one its ridic

  • I loved mcdonalds back in the day

  • WOW 1990!

  • @zackam1306 :D

  • this pretty good quality for 1990 must be so weird watching a 90's video

  • @zackam1306 Thanks! It was a really good camera- though big & heavy! That got tiring at something like an air show where I'd have to be holding it & pointing it up a lot!

But yeah, it is so weird! It's just possible one of those kids in this vid is a grandparent now!

    :o

  • What kind of camera was it?

  • It was a Sony Camcorder that used a VHS tape to record on- it was huge and weighed a lot! Even though the battery died long ago, I can plug it in to an outlet and it still works- I got a power converter, plugged it into my truck and used it to record the whole 175 mile trip from the coast to my parents' house on a 3 hour tape!

But weight & size are the bad things & what is so nice about today's cameras!

  • and btw is that degreaser he is spraying on the grills, just looks it with the purple color?

  • Yeah, that was the degreaser.

  • oh right, old procedures? id lose my job if i did that now!

  • LOL! Yeah! What's perfectly fine at one time becomes totally forbidden at others!

I remember how when making milkshakes, I'd move the cup in a circular pattern as it filled, to make sure it had a uniform consistency all around-I didn't really think about it, just did it. Our store manager got all over me one day about it not being "correct", but then a few months later that became the standard!

    :P

That's the one problem working at a place like McDonalds-you're supposed to be obedient sheep!

  • 1990?

those grills look like the ones we have only just got because our old ones broke lol!

i got 7 overnighters in a row now its all im going to be doing-cleaning :)

  • LOL! They pulled the antiques out of storage then?

    :P

Ugh, that sounds brutal! I'm not a morning person, but I preferred the opening shift, as when I got off, I still had much of the day left-closing, it would take a while before I could get myself to go to bed then by the time I woke up in the middle of the day I'd have to soon go to work. But I did enjoy going in on my time off to see friends like I did here!

  • I remember them having pizza!

  • LOL! Yeah, there have been so many specials that have come up over the years- sometimes they bring them back- I remember when I was there they had the "McRib" a couple times then recently I saw them back in a commercial.

McDonalds has changed a lot over the years, but in many ways it stays the same!

  • @tash6699 I remember in the mid 90's when madonalds tried the hot dog thing. It failed in one week.

  • do u just clean?>

  • LOL! No, I was a manager, but here I came in on my own time to hang out with friends and use my camera, but I wanted to help them out as long as I was there, that way they could finish quicker. When I would open the store, there were times I'd come in an hour before I had to, off the clock, & do a bit of everyone's stuff so when they got there they had an easy opening-it's hard enough for teens to come in at 5 in the morning!

    :P

  • aha oki

  • I wasnt even born until 4 years after this videoxDD and i just got hired there.

  • LOL! Cool! Hope you have some great times there with some great people, like I had!

  • I was born 2 years later haha.

  • LOL! It's so long ago, it seems like some alien world to me now!

    :P

  • Great videos. They have historical value as in 2009 McDonalds around the world look totally different inside. Its a time capsule.

  • Thank you! Yeah, it's funny how fast things change! It's like I remember as a kid, there were no cell phones- or even cordless phones- just the ones with the coiled cords to the handset. Plus only a few local tv stations along with the public broadcasting channel, and it was unheard of for anyone to have more than the one tv in a house! When I was 14 I got a Commodore 64 computer, and at the time only geeks had a computer. Only 64 k of memory & used a cassette tape for loading/saving!

    :P

  • 0mg were you guys closing?

  • Yeah, they were closing. I was the opening manager, but since I'd recently got my camera, I'd come in just to film, and while I was there, I'd help out a bit, since a some of them were good friends of mine.

    :D

  • coolio

  • Thanks!

    :D

  • SWEET! Just wondering, do you still work there today? If not what do you do now?

  • Nah, I left nearly 20 years ago! I work for a dental equipment company now.

  • That's neat!

  • Did you work at a McDonald's?

I mostly enjoyed our store, but my brother worked in one part time while he was based at Camp Pendleton, and some of his stories made me not want to eat at one ever again!

    :P

  • LOL! Thats funny!

I did work at McDonalds a couple of years ago. Now I work at a shoe store! I hate it. Do you like your job?

  • :D

Yeah, I hate my job too. It was good, when the owners ran it. They treated the employees like family & tried to run the place fairly, but then getting quite old, they started turning over control to management, which saw us all as robots or cattle. They started getting rid of higher paid, experienced people & replacing them with temps who had no clue what they're doing, so in the end it costs more money, makes it more frustrating & we're losing really good people. It's become gloomy.

    :(

  • Well thats too bad. : (

By the way you have some really cool videos! I subscribed! : )

  • I guess it's just typical of many companies. Kind of like school- you're stuck going, day after day, even if there are people that you don't really want to be around. Bad teachers, bad bosses, bad classmates or bad coworkers, life seems to be about dealing with being around obnoxious people!

    :D

    Thanks!!!

  • yeah in our mcdonalds, our owner who has owned the store, and sorrounding restaurants for 3 years wont give out raises. We have an old guy who started out as a manager and doesnt know what the fuck hes doing, he gets paid a $700 a week salary and he just fucks shit up, im a crew trainer, i got a 15 cent raise, which puts me at 7.30 an hour and i can run the shift better than him, and ive been working at mcdonalds for 3 years! he gets paid more than me and hes just fucking shit up.

  • Yep! That seems to be the way things are in most companies-all the way up. I think it's a big part of why our economy is so bad-you've often got idiotic and/or lazy drones promoting others like themselves, because they don't want to risk having some hard working intelligent people taking their job from them.

So, places end up being run inefficiently, morale suffers & these days it leads to the business failing, the workers out of work while the CEOs walk away with millions.

    It's insane!

  • McDonald's has changed so much, but yet...so little at the same time! I now own/operate four McDonald's in NC and I always remember the fun times I had working as crew back in the 80's and 90's!!!

  • That's cool! Yeah, I figure there are many elements that will always be there, no matter what else changes!

  • wow did you have to pull the grills every night we do it once a week and the fryers every 2 weeks its so gross under there and im always afraid that im gonna get shocked by the giant plug ins and when a piece of meat gets under the grill it stinks like something died

  • Yeah! Even every night it was still kind of disgusting, but I can just imagine what you have to face! I don't even want to think of those restaurants out there that never clean around them!

    :o

LOL! Nothing like a piece of groundbeef lying there rotting! Sort of like kitchen roadkill!

    :P

I mentioned to someone else, but one of our guys was climbing up to clean something & stepped on the fryer lid-his foot fell in, his shoe filled with hot oil & burned his heel down to the bone!

    :o

  • are you guys like closed during the time lapse since both grills are cleaned. Didn't you just hate pulling them and cleaning behind them its so nasty. One time our regular closing manager was such an idiot to not have the grills pulled for like 2 weeks it got so nasty back there we had to use the grill scraper to get some of the stuff of the floor.

  • Yeah, Andy was in his street clothes so it had to be closed.

I can just imagine how bad that had to be! It was disgusting enough and we pulled them out every night to be cleaned! I've watched some of those shows where they go to really bad restaurants where it's like they NEVER clean! It makes me want to run into the kitchen to check things out before I eat at a place!

  • by the way during that time lapse are you guys like listening to Black Sabbath somewhere in that lapse? I thought I could hear their distinctive guitar tone at 2:25

  • Yeah, I think it is. A couple of the guys that closed a lot liked Erasure, so I associate that music with McDonalds a lot, but it depended on who was closing. 80% of my time there was mornings, though I had to take some mid-day or closing shifts at times.

Sometimes I'd get up an hour earlier, come in by myself, off the clock that first hour & do part of everyone's opening jobs, so they'd get off to a nice, easy start in the morning. I liked doing that because many were my friends.

  • You know, I've watched this and your other videos you guys seem so like loose and easy going and you all look happy to be there like ur havin fun... but today in my restaurant in upstate NY, theres no easy going cuz were busy alot. My restaraunt is in Gloversville, NY which is an hour outside of Albany, the capital of NY. I do everything at my restaurant... Grill, Fries, Front Counter, Drive Thru, Maintenance, Closing. I like closing cuz i dont have to get up early, and its usually slower.

  • Yeah, there were times when it worked so well. When I first started it wasn't so nice & I left as the good people were leaving, but in between we were a well-oiled machine that was efficient & often enjoyed working, just because we liked each other! I figure who you work with is 100 times more important than what your job is!

But I tried to only film when things weren't too busy, because I'd be getting in the way otherwise, so the pulling-your-hair-out moments aren't recorded!

    :P

  • One thing, Newberg, back then was only about 10,000 people, so other than some traffic, coming from Portland 25 miles away, we'd have rushes, but it wasn't constantly busy!

I started out my first few months back on the grill, then a few months on the counter, then I went to maintenance for a few months, then became a manager, so like you, I ended up doing a little of everything, which kept it from getting boring. I loved working drive-thru though-a seperate little world!

  • Wow I've never seen a McDonald's store in 1990 (I'm 18 thats why). I work at a McDonalds in upstate NY opened in 1987, Ive been there for 2 years. It looks strange, I see where you walk in it looks like the crew room is behind that little wall that the fry station is up against. The grill area has a different set up, I see that the holding bins are there as opposed to now they all do made to order, which I think is a lot easier. Is this store still up, and in the same form as it was back then??

  • :D

The crew room was way in the back, going through the grill. Behind the fry station was the drive through, which was very long and narrow. As opening manager I rocked the boat by allowing some of the guys to work drive through which had been the sole domain of the girls!

    :P

Yeah, the holding bins were bad as I'd prefer something made to order not lying under heat lamps for 10 minutes! After that the stuff went in buckets in the cooler to be sent to a pig farm. But it was wasteful!

  • I think it was 5 years ago now that the store burned down! They rebuilt on the site, but it's very different. It was kind of sad, because even though I normally don't eat fast food, and hadn't stopped there in many years, it was still a place where I made many friends and had some great times!

Of course, at the time, when dealing with people not showing up for opening shift, a couple buses of kids stopping during a busy time, etc., it didn't always seem like good times!

    :D

  • I can only imagine how hard it was doing breakfast with the "bin method" what was that like?

  • One thing, we had a lot less variety than I see advertised today, so that helped not having so many items to make. Since I worked mostly mornings I got to be a speed demon cracking eggs with one hand! We did make lots of orange juices and store them in bins full of ice which helped during the rushes.

Using the bins was tricky because to prevent waste you only wanted to make what would sell in less than 10 minutes but you couldn't always predict a rush!

  • wow paul is a cutie.. lmao XD

  • :D

I wonder if I'd recognize some people from back then, as it's been sooo long! About 12 years after graduation a guy from my class came down from upstairs as he hear I was working there to. He had been this very athletic & attractive guy but I didn't recognize him as he was very overweight, mostly bald & just not a bit like he looked a dozen years before! I was saved by seeing his name tag!

    :P

  • haha yea they do help. I'm bad with names but faces I can do a little well with lol :). So what u think mcdonalds taste better then or now? XD hehe

  • LOL! The funny thing is that even as a kid I wasn't a big fan of fast food! It did help that the Newberg store was very, very clean and well maintained, which from hearing other people isn't the case in many. But I don't go out to eat much at all & then it's usually the Lebanese restaurant in North Bend or the Thai restaurant in Winchester Bay. If I do have fast food I like Burgerville as they aren't the typical fast food-though a bit more expensive.

  • lol yea :) never had Lebanese food sounds good tho XD. Some people say its different and yes that store was clean from todays standards ;)..

  • Yeah, Lebanese food is great! Lots of lamb and this place does it perfectly! Plus the serve shishkababs on 3 foot swords!

My brother worked part time at a McDonalds down near Camp Pendleton when he was based there and after working at the one in Newberg he was shocked by how filthy it was- rats basically had the run of the place!

  • well, mine looks the same as it was since 1987, when it opened. i miss the 90s though

  • LOL! I definitely miss those times at McDonalds- not the best of jobs, but a ton of really great people to work with and we really had a lot of fun!

  • That looks like the McDonald's in my town Carlisle in PA.

  • LOL! I wonder if yours hasn't been remodled since that time?

    :P

They had to do Newberg's because it burned down a few years ago!

  • woah, how old were you then?

  • 24!

    :P

  • wow! your an oldster now! (compared to me) btw thx for subscribing. i will sub too!

  • Yeah! When I think about just how long ago this is it does make me feel kind of old!!!

    :P

    Thanks for all the comments!

    : )

  • Thanks for all the replys!

  • You're welcome!

    :D

  • COOL!!! 18 years ago nearly! Wow, before i was born!

  • Yeah! I look back and when I was a little kid it seemed like a year was forever, and every year I get older they seem to go by just a little bit faster! I think that's why we go senile when we get really old- it's a way of slowing things down again!!!

    :P

  • LOL thats a good thing for age! :)

  • LOL! Yeah! Like they say, you're born helpless- as a baby- and you go back to that state at old age- needing to be fed, wearing a diaper, etc.!

    :P

  • HAhahaha, my granfather says, you hobble about when your born, and then same when your the same as old! lol :)

  • Exactly!

    :D

But I'm hoping I can stay clear of mind and active until I die! I'd hate to be a prisoner of a failing body and brain!

  • 'Hope i die before i get old'

  • LOL!!! Or stay young as you get old!

    :P

I had one great grandfather who was still jogging, etc. at 97!!!

  • LOL!!! Or stay young as you get old!

    :P

I had one great grandfather who was still jogging, etc. at 97!!!

  • cool! this was 2 years before i was born.

  • : )

    That's right, 17 years ago!!!

  • lol, this is almost 20 years old!

  • LOL! Hey Jay! Yeah! It feel like it was in another century... oh, it was!!!

    :D

  • Are you still in contact with any of the people in the video?

  • Yeah! I've exchanged some emails with some people from back then, like Richard who was doing the "narration" while Sean & Andy were "fighting". Jeff in my other video just emailed me about his getting married to the lady he's been with for 5 years now. I saw Jon at the store a year ago. But I haven't heard from Andy since a couple years after we quit working together.

  • I feel tired after just watching that. I can see that they didn't really have a dress code back then.

  • As soon as the store closed many people couldn't get out of their McDonalds clothes fast enough!

    : )

  • Haha yeah, Dr. Who! That show seems to have made a comeback over here. I wasn't old enough to enjoy the earlier series but the newer ones are really good.

The show Odyssey rings a bell..

  • Yeah, Tom Baker was the Doctor at the time I started watching it & to me he'll always be the top one, but I've actually enjoyed the new series a lot!

The Odyssey was made in Canada. Outside of Reynolds I don't think any others went on to be famous. The main character dealt with people in the coma world who existed in the real world, but were somewhat different in personality. Great show!

  • Same. I'm not sure if you got the show Playdays across the pond but it was amazing. It's a kids TV programme that I literally grew up with and I've been looking for it all over the place but I can't find any clips of it anywhere!

    Ohhh the memories! ;)

  • No, though I grew up loving everything British & was grateful just to see Benny Hill or Monty Python on Public T.V., but then about the time I went into high school they started showing Dr. Who!!! I was in heaven! : )

I know what you mean though. There was a short lived series called "Odyssey" where a kid falls out of a tree house & end up in a coma with him "waking up" in a world without adults & a young Ryan Reynolds as El Supremo the dictator!

  • I was in my mid 20s but though it was a kid's show it was really kind of dark, forboding and deep! I've searched all over the internet for years & can't find it available which is sad because it was far better than most of the shows made for kids or adults today!

  • Whoa, fast reply! :)

I know what you mean - it's just like music and TV show out now that we all take for granted and sometime say we hate but in like 20 years times we'll miss them like mad and be wishing we were back in 2007! :D

  • LOL! I'm catching up on a bunch of peoples' vids I didn't see over the last couple of days. Sometimes there'll only be a few for a week, then it's like everyone is posting new lots of new ones at the same time!

You are totally right! I remember there were some shows I loved as a kid but now I'm like what was I thinking! Then there are old shows I didn't appreciate then but now think are great!

  • Hey, thank for the reply :D

I don't know why I said I was 1 month old because I've just worked it out and I would have been -2 months old (young?)! :)

Even though I wasn't born by this time, it still reminds me of the good ol' days and for some reason this video reminds me of Back To The Future even though I've never even seen it! :P

    Thanks again..

  • LOL! Sort of like deja vu from inside the womb!

    : )

I still haven't got around to converting & editing it, but I've got footage from a meeting of the entire crew & Josh Drake is there & he's a total emo back when there weren't emos! It's funny how watching stuff now I'll see lots of things I'd never thought of before! Also the more I rewatch this the more I miss a lot of those guys & gals!!!

  • Mannnn I was just one month old when this was taped. That's history right there! :D

  • LOL!!! You know, as the years go by I forget how old I really am! Sorry not to reply right away! I'm finding a number of comments from a week ago that I never was notified of, so I'm looking through all my videos, one by one to make sure you guys don't think I'm some sort of jerk who doesn't reply!

: ) I've never really liked fast food so it's been years since I've been in a McDonalds, but it would be neat to compare what it looks like now!

  • LOL! Thanks James! It is funny to see myself- so different, yet still such a dork! : ) I never really liked vests, but my grandma got it for me, so I wore it for a while! Oh, I just started noticing kids with hair like I remember from when I was a kid. It's all cycles. Kind of like some 10 years ago when it was long on top but shaved around the edges, which was exacly like the style German WWII soldiers had!

  • Wait, that's you in the vest? I thought you were the guy in the striped shirt :S

  • LOL! Yeah. I wasn't officially there, but since I was, I liked to help out- what would be boring work if I was on the clock was fun, especially because I was helping my friends. I'm sure I got a little warm & shed the vest.

  • Wow! What an interesting vid! It must be weird to look back at these and see yourself, I'm not sure how I will feel in 17 years time looking at my YouTube vids! And that guys vest looks a bit too big for him lol. And, it's funny how 80's the early 90's were. I only need to look at photo's of me as a toddler and it looks so retro! :P

  • Oh, Sean, the big guy terrorizing Andy at the end, was once up trying to clean something up high, and his foot slipped into the frier! His shoe filled with that hot grease & basically turned his heel into a giant chicken nugget! I still cringe to think about it!!!

  • HAHAHAHAHA! lol.

  • HAHAHAHAHA!

  • I've got better stuff I haven't converted yet- the process takes so much time & bogs my computer down!- but this is one of the first with my camera, so a lot of people, especially Andy "the star of this one", were a little camera shy. Later people started getting comfortable with it & started hamming it up. Anyway, the timelapse thing seemed like a cool thing, so I used it a lot!

  • i was three yrs old. :[

  • LOL! One of the videos from that time is of my cousin Denver at Christmas. He's your age now, in the Air Force, and in the video he was just a little kid running around! It really makes me wonder how the people in the video have changed!

  • I was nine. Seven years and two months later, I was a McDonald's employee.

  • LOL! I remember Jay Leno saying how some vast fraction of Americans have worked there, including himself! The funny thing is, I've never been a big fan of fast food! Still, I made a few of my closest friendships there & had a whole lot of fun, between a whole lot of monotony & stress!

    : )

  • I was one month old!

  • LOL! My internal clock never really adjusts to how much time has passed, then I think about something like that & time becomes very real! The tapes have been collecting dust all these years so this is the first time I've sat down & watched them all & it's funny because it brings me right back like it was yesterday! I really, really miss a number of the people I was friends with there!
