drake- take care, lupe fiasco- laser, tyler, the creator- goblins, skrillex- scary monster & nice sprites, and big sean- finally famous. (biggest let downs)
A little bit of a let down on the Explosions album. 311's was a huge let down..their last 2 have been for me (maybe Bob Rock is the reason?) Another let down for me was Escape Velocity by Zombi
I was greatly disappointed in Dananananaykroyd's 'There Is a Way'. 'Hey Everyone!' was a great debut and got me really excited. I wasn't sad to see them break up in September because I figured they probably wouldn't have wooed me with their next one either.
*sigh* The Strokes "Angles"...I was looking so forward to their return album and because there was more collab between the members. I got the album for my birthday and I only like 3 songs at best :P
Arctic Monkeys "Suck it and See"- not as big as a letdown but I really had to let is one grow on me. Not as bad now :)
Hey Anthony, I dig your reviews and I like the way you critique albums and all, but you should know better than to call something 'really unique.' If something is unique then that's as unique as it can be. It can't be very or really or more unique than it is already. I hear smart people say that shit all the time.
And you know what, Im gonna say it. I've eventually coped with it and started to appreciate it for what it was and its not horrible, but nonetheless The Hunter was my biggest let down of 2011. I wanted them to top Crack the Skye. I really started to believe that they perfected thier nich and forged thier talents into a immacultely tuned masterpeice. I understand thier reasons and have read and watched every interview since, also backing with my own speculations as to why it was toned down, but..
Hey four eyes, I hate to be pedantic but Jesu is actually phonetically pronounced Hezu. I called them that too until I saw 'em with Swervedriver and Broderick announced them as that.
@Skatertike202 Suck It And See is a classic, and I've supported the Arctic's before the first album. I mean it's not as good as 'Whatever People Say...' but I'd give it 9/10
@RaiyuXI I love the Arctic Monkeys too dude but it was just a disappointment for me, nothing will ever be as good as Whatever People Say...that album is pure gold but come on half the songs on Suck It and See are just bad their EPs kill this album. Brick By Brick sucks, Dont Sit Down..is annoying after 30 secs, She Thunderstorms is boring. I'm not saying this album is awful i'm saying that i was expecting more there is too many mediocre tracks on it 6/10
I think everyone would agree when I say Morbid angel's - Illud Divinum Insanus. They came up with this experimental album that just fails.I have nothing against experimental but after 8 years of not making an album ...we kinda have very high expectations. I'm a big Morbid Angel fan , I tried to like it so bad but never happened and never will. I remember when I first listened to it , I was afraid to listen to the next tracks. The only "good song" on the album is Nevermore ......
how you gunna say goblin sucked goblin, yonkers, she, translvania, nightmare, tron cat, her, sandwitches, fish, analog, bitch suck dick, windows , and golden all great songs.... deeper means then what he really says plus songs like her and bsd are funny come on how do you not laugh at what he says....and yes he wants people to laugh at thoughs songs there about true sits but are hilarious
@realrap33 I agree man; Goblin was actually BETTER than Bastard, I mean, that mix of Horrorcore style and chilled out soulful melodic songs like Fish and that trippy ending to Radicals...
@dudewutyeah Yeah, Yonkers was OK and I really like She and Nightmare, but the rest of the songs felt half made and puerile (but not in a good way). I think that applies to most of OFWGKTA's output; 2/10 songs are great, the rest are d sides.
@MyFace43 agree with you, *isam would have been amazing if Amon Tobin had been conventional enough to add a decent beat to most of the tracks. Instead it was just an experiment, one with results I didn't rate too highly.
@voltsfabian It feels like The Arctic Monkeys are rapidly ageing to me. Gone is the speed, the youth, the energy of their first 2 albums, now they stumble round on a crutch of Beatle-esque whimsy singing poetry but forgetting passion. Suck It And See is the culmination of that downhill (stairlift assisted) trajectory. Agree with you about King of Limbs too.
Anthony Fantano, I dig your musical taste/opinion(s). You fuck with Frank Zappa, Battles, Fugazi, Washed Out, Kendrick Lamar, ... etc. Thanks for these videos, mayne.
@Endexter Yes! I'm kind of concerned about The Black Keys. I loved the stripped down, raw quality of their early stuff, but felt it could've done with a little additional production. In total contrast, this new release (and a lot of the one before) feels to me overproduced to the detriment of the songs. Too much sugar in a coffee kills what makes coffee good, and trying to produce The Black Keys like they're pop artists kills what makes The Black Keys so good. Danger Mouse needs to step back.
@TwoTube2 yeah, they've been steady about adding sugar to the coffee, which is good. but you're completely right, they're getting a little overproduced. i don't know how much danger mouse is to blame, Attack and Release was pretty good, but they do need to get back to the rock and the rawness. they've come a long way since the big come up and it's good that they haven't sabotaged they're sound to maintain credibility. at the core, they're the same, they just need to make some adjustments
@JoshuaEquilibriumIX REALLY!? No hate to your own opinion but DAMN! I have never heard that said. Almost always the other way around. lol I think they get better and better with every release. Anxious to see what they do next though. I hope for something pretty obscure.
Totally agree with the Goblin album by Tyler the Creator. The beginning two songs on the album set this really high standard for the rest of the tracks, but none were nearly as great. Goblin and Yonkers really spoke to me, as well as maybe She and Nightmare, but the rest of the tracks had the same repetitive themes.
@KyuubiiLy It just felt like Coldplay are trying more and more to be like U2 and that got in the way of Mylo that ended up to be underwhelming because it was poorly utilized. Felt like they lost it, but opinions are opinions.
I liked Goblin. I actually thought it was more refined of an album than Bastard lol. One album that really disappointed me was Tha Carter IV. I was expecting it to be Wayne's return to form, but it really wasn't.
The biggest let down of all time has to be the musical abortion known as OMNI by Minus the Bear. A close second was Total Life Forever by Foals. Granted it's a good album, but it's so far removed from foals earlier work that I felt it became watered down and commercial.
Tomboy. Maybe because Person Pitch was one of my favorite albums of the decade... I don't know. Tomboy sounded like the same spacy, ethereal song, repeated again and again, with way too much reverb.
the new Kashiwa Daisuke was a big letdown.. And yeah, Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy was so bad I'm convinced it was a joke. And Goblin, big time. Aaaaaand Born This Way. Gaga is a guilty pleasure for me, but BTW was terrible. =/ oh God and Burst Apart! So bland. I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot. hahaha.
@MasterExploder61 in my humble opinion, Coldplay haven't been on top form as of X&Y. Parachutes and A Rush of Blood To The Head were great. X&Y was OK, Viva La Vida was fairly weak and Mylo Xyloto, aside from that poppy hit single, is forgettable :/
Tubelord really let me down. There new album wasn't terrible, but it was no where near as good as there others. To much pop, and far less mathy then there previous releases. honestly, it broke my heart.
Really there was only one album that was a let down for me, but eventually it led me to understand what they were trying to get across, and eventually I respected that, although I did retain and favor a few songs on the album, overall I was disapointed. : Justice-Audio,Video,Disco (You surprised me with Tyler the Creator at the end, but I see your point...)
@luciferinperson i thought bastard was better. dont get me wrong, i love goblin. i have the vyinl and everything, but production wise i thought goblin was a little disappointing
"Live.Love.ASAP" by ASAP Rocky. I'm not a hater at all, i just could not like it no matter how many times i listened to it. the producer killed all the lyrics.
Lasers ( but it wasnt lupes fault and im sure he will bounce back) rolling papers (used to love wiz khalifas early work but this album was garbage and i dont like the direction hes going in at all) Tha Carter 4 (couldve been great but wasnt feeling it)
im a new sub soo if you have already done the reviews i apologze but i was woundering if you have checked out any of Stoupes new projects ,Dutch or vespertina, they are two of the most beautiful jazz hip hop fusions ive heard since dan the automators lovage project , anyways , stay up .
i was kinda disapointed by wiz khlifahs rolling pappers i expected it to be on another level an although its cool he freestyles his tracks now , it comes across lyrically in comparrison to his older stuff an being a releasse as aposed to a mixtape you could tell her was goin for a more popy audience then on kush an oj an the amber kush mixtape i still liked it just several hooks i wassent really feelin
Goblin was a great album but compared to Bastard I feel it was a let down. Songs like Transylvania, bitch suck dick, and fish are what kill it for me. They just seem too immature for a guy who has that much talent. And i know that dude doesn't give fuck about mature, but those particular tracks are ridiculous and don't fit the over all vibe of the album.
A personal let down for me was Chimaira's new record 'The Age of Hell'. I don't think it's a horrible record, nor do I have a lot of negative things to say about the band, but compared to the Chimaira that I'm used to and love to death.....this record fell way short for me. If it were another band putting out their first record, I may have a different opinion, but to me, this just isn't Chimaira. Kudos to them for their resilience though.
Really sad for me to say, as I'm a massive Foo's fan, however the new Wasting Light Album? I bought it first day out and I left my evening feeling genuinely disappointed with this album, while it had a lot of good ranging sounds, it just didn't suit what I felt was the foo fighters, the few songs that stood out to me were, Bridges Burning, for the drums. Rope. I should have Known and Walk. Oh and Arlandria, while the album wasn't a failure I was expecting something a lot better than what I got.

"Live.Love.ASAP" by ASAP Rocky. I'm not a hater at all, i just could not like it no matter how many times i listened to it. the producer killed all the lyrics.
ImMikey420 3 months ago
@ImMikey420 Lmao, the producer killed the whole album, it totaly made it one of the most freshest mixtapes of the year.

i was kinda disapointed by wiz khlifahs rolling pappers i expected it to be on another level an although its cool he freestyles his tracks now , it comes across lyrically in comparrison to his older stuff an being a releasse as aposed to a mixtape you could tell her was goin for a more popy audience then on kush an oj an the amber kush mixtape i still liked it just several hooks i wassent really feelin

Dead Throne by The Devil Wears Prada. It's not a bad album. I was just expecting so much more from these guys.

I'm With You by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was decent, but not as good as I hoped.

Incubus and Jane's Addiction.
I'd say Lou Reed and Metallica, but it's not like I was expecting that to be good.
