Jazz police ! I believe it was Miles Davis himself who described jazz as already being museum music before he passed away. You sound like just another of those tedious anal types who clings onto "tradition" because you lack the ability to "hear" what's going on. if you'd been around when Miles was blazing his trail you'd probably be making the same dull retentive comments about him. By your own admission there are plenty out there arguably better informed and more open minded than you.
Great piece of music combining all sorts of styles. I love it, great feel and awesome live act to watch as well. Jazzpolice1 has blatantly just registered to youtube recently so he can inflict his frustrations of a failed jazz musician upon others :D
This is jazz, plain and simple, and not fusion. Refreshing to hear jazz untethered to swing which has been commercialized into a cliche. Finally. It;s a logical place for jazz to go.
@adelawyer Don't get me wrong, if musicians are out there doing it I wish them well and want people to be successful, but this is not jazz, and whatever it is, it's not that well played anyway. But good luck to them, they're getting away with whatever it is they're doing because people are buying into it!
@jazzpolice1 We disagree. Why is it not jazz? It has syncopation, some dissonance and improvisational qualities. Is this much farther from Miles Davis as Miles (West Coast) is from Scott Joplin (Rag Time)? Jazz is NOT tied to any given rhythm, swing or otherwise.
@adelawyer All to often bands like this call thwmselves jazz to give themselves the air of respectability that they have not earned and sadly peopple buy into it, which is fine, and music is music and if people enjoy it, great, just don't call it jazz.
@adelawyer I don't think Jazz needs to be 'swing' by the way, but there does need to be a strong jazz vocabulary happening. Listen to some of the recording made by Keith Jarrett for example.
@adelawyer There is no jazz language in the music for me in the way that there was with Miles Davis, from any era of his output, to Weather Report, Chick Corea electric band, Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheney.....you can trace back ANY of these people right through the jazz tradition right back to Louis Armstrong in the way that they play.
@adelawyer . I can't hear any evidence of a jazz tradition in the playing by anyone in this group apart from elements of the sax solo, but you wouldn't say Aretha Franklin during her famous years with Atlantic was Jazz, just because King Curtis played a solo that clearly had elements of the jazz language in it. Nothing else about this band suggests to me that it is Jazz music.
@adelawyer In my opinion, and please let me stress, this is only my opinion, and I do think the debate needs to be had, especially in the UK today, when so many bands of fairly dubious quality are being lauded as good by the press and booked on Jazz festivals, when some of the countries great musicians are being seemingly ignored because they don't fit into the current trend of being almost like an indie band in their image.
I'm really taken by this band. But then I'm a sad old jazz fan who likes it less cliched too sometimes with added influences. Their two albums are well worth investing in.

Why do people need to label music with a gender?
What does it matter that this is Jazz, Rock music or whatever?
And this is really really good in my opinion

Maybe someone could explain to me how this qualifies as Jazz?
At best it is a cross between an un-funky version of the JB's and a bad version of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
Am I wrong?

@jazzpolice1 Chick Corea's a sellout, he even said so himself! Although I do like his Acoustic band stuff. Man up and stop whining.
