  • That is CERTAINLY 1981, I was into Heavy Rock at the time and didn't like DD. That was until Rio came along and that all changed...

  • Get ready for summer !... Brrr. Weather looks a bit cloudy that day in Manchester ! Was it in the morning ? Great hour for a performance of DD ! As I live in France and was 8 in '81, this video looks really exotic compared to my TV memories of that time ! Thanks for the upload. Splendid ! I LOVE IT !

  • cool would love to have been in the audience for this !

  • WOW. Thanks for posting. What a treat. Five adorable talented men.

  • audio playback not live

  • fuck yes , check the haircuts soooo EPIC.

  • WTF? Where is that someone's backyard? And what is Simon singing into a walkie talkie?

  • this is great! thanks so much for posting this! :)

  • Even though they dubbed the audio, it is fabulous to see them in this clip. Thanks for posting this rarity.

  • Song was definately from 1981. Likely written earlier than that, not sure. Thanks for the interesting, rare post.

  • God I love the early 80s....I wish I where there in the middle of the New Romantics instead of CRAPPY!!! 2010 :(

  • if this is live then I'm Fonzie

  • IO...vi...ADOROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!<3

  • One of ssexiest hottest bands of all time.........Live or not they were truely talented.......something that can't be overlooked.

  • Can't beleive this is 1981.. Film quality looks amazing for that year.. And I didn't think this song came out till at least 83'.. But than again I was BORN in 86' so what do I know..

  • John Taylor.

  • Absolute gold!

  • too bad its lip synced....

  • @pennfarms yea for sure.

  • Great video!!!!!!!!!!

  • Guitars aren't plugged in and Simon is singing into a walkie talkie... kind of classic seeing them back then... but sad that they were miming their own tune.

  • Trust me, they could have played it live just fine...but UK TV shows like this and Tops of the Pops, not to mention US ones like American Bandstand usually insisted on having bands lip-synch to the record...who knows why? Maybe just to mae sure it sounded exactly like what people heard when the record was played on the radio?

  • Oustanding, they were just getting started

  • Takes me back, wish I could beam myself to 1981 again.

  • people should go back to dancing like that ... nightclubs would be much more entertaining if they did

  • Enter Duran Duran Planet Earth (Night Version) if you want to see the "real" New Romantics, no kidding either

  • What a lovely find. Thank you for posting this video.

  • So rad. Glad this 80's music is making a comeback, I'd have to say it has a lot to do with people posting their love for it with the cool videos of the past.

Bands like Cut Copy come to mind.

  • they look so young!!

  • i just feel so weird watching a vid of them in 1981 because i was born like a decade after this xD

    really AMAZING :D

though is not a live performance, but is a jewel certainly :)

    THEY'RE THE BEST!

  • Fantastic old footage! Definitely not live though. lol.

I FINALLY saw them 3 days ago here in Toronto. They were perfect. Simon still sings spectacularly. How's that for alliteration?

  • they orginated from West Malaysia

and are now Singaporean. They got their name from a kind of fruits very famous with the locals here. check it out.

  • Hi, John Adrenochrome here, (the uploader). It was definitely 1981... I should know... I recorded it!

And besides, any student of the 80's would know that by 83 or 84 all the New Romantics had gone. Me and my friends had certainly moved on.

Also, by 83 or 84, DD would have been promoting stuff like - Is there Something I Should Know.

  • Right on! The outfits are from the 81-82 period ... by 83-84 they were sporting more of the "Rio" look ... less New Romantic garb

    Great clip though ...

  • @JohnAdrenochrome

Also, in 83 or 84 they would never ever played in a budget stage in a college!!!

  • @stevesattlerfilms This vid has to be pre 83-84...look at Rogers drum kit...way different than what he used in later years.

  • @stevesattlerfilms Actually you can tell it's from 1981 because the fact of how they're dressed! And by the time of 1983 or 84 they were too bit go play on a stage like this!

  • I love the walkie talkies and the bright colours!

  • Eccezzionale documento...thank you John!

  • si ma questo è troppo playback... li ho visti dal vivo l'anno scorso e sono meravigliosi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Speed Grapher

  • BRILLIANT!!!!!!!

  • DAMN!!! Its lip synced! if u listen to it it's the same recording as the official song.

  • lipsynced to the bone, i know if you were good enough to be on tv back then you could afford a chordless phone, but it doesn't seem to fit the live sound, and the vocal mic has a chord.

  • no.... not really dude. The sound on youtube is out of sync with the video part. That was kind of an easy one to figure out. :-)

  • well... some parts don't look live, true... hmmmmm?? what ever, it does not matter. THey were and are still awesome!

  • i only see one mike on the drums

  • yes... looks like playback...There is another similar video with them playing live outside somewhere in Germany. Maybe this is a promotion gig.

It doesn't matter. They are an awesome band and have played live many times at concerts already! :-)

  • yeah, i think sometimes they do that, and probably the crowd is in on it too with the chance to be on tv with a big band. just like a TV studio show or something. its probably not cost efficient. type in "Duran Duran Live" and click the 'Reflex Live at wembly 83' for a really good live check if you haven't seen it. check out my vicious comments too.

  • no mics on the drums no leads connected to the gitars and S.Le Bon singing into a trani radio !

  • i am totally agree with lullalittlestar, although i am not young as you are.

    i am 23

  • Where exactly was this filmed? Was it a Fair or something? Regardless, very nice find. I'm sure these guys did a lot of live TV spots before they hit it big.

  • Great stuff, idols of mine. I was lucky to meet them a couple of years ago when they attended the Brit School in Croydon as I had to photograph them for my newspaper, they were cool guys, though Simon seemed a bit aloof.

  • they were lovely!

I wish i was born that period *_*

sometimes to be 16-aged in 2008 is bad!

  • There was something magic about only having 3 TV stations, seeing the very 1st videos on brand new MTV and listening to so many good bands and artists ranging from Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Bowie, The Cure, Frankie goes to Hollywood, Visage, Heaven 17, The Human League + many other new wave bands to even more funky stuff like Micheal Jackson or Prince etc... and all this on vinyl too! If there was a time machine, I'd take you back to my teen years! :-) ...Great video! thanks for posting it!

  • No technology!!!!

  • Can I get a Red Flag for Rubixs Cube!!! Duran Duran Rocks!!! Thank the Lord for the UK!!! U guys have some kick ass musiccccccccccc!!!!

  • Wow! reminds me of my high school days! Have loved Duran Duran since 1981! Thanks for posting this video! And I too first heard Duran Duran when I lived in Peru in 1981!

  • im from peru, send more duran duran videos, im a fan since 1981

  • Brilliant! oh to be 16 again...*sigh*

  • Darling Simon,

Call me on that white cordless phone you're singing into. My number is 682-6489 (MVA-NITY).

    Madame Vanity

  • lol what Planet are you on

    certainly NOT Planet Earth lol

  • Oh my gosh...awesome video...thanks so much. I've been an admirer of Duran Duran since 1982.

  • If this is live, I'm Sancho Panza.

  • They weren't playing their instruments live, but the performance was nevertheless live, in that it went out over the air as it happened. i.e. not pre-recorded and then broadcast later, like so many shows were at that time. John Adrenochrome.

  • Yes, I gathered that mate. I was only having a laugh. Duran Duran are very good live, I saw them at Wembley Arena in the late eightees and they were excellent! All the best mate!

  • che belli i miei duran duran...com'erano giovani... ma sempre i migliori vi adoroooooooo

  • I think they are lip synching, but it's still good footage.

  • They weren't playing their instruments live, but the performance was nevertheless live, in that it went out over the air as it happened. i.e. not pre-recorded and then broadcast later, like so many shows were at that time. John Adrenochrome.

  • Although this is rare and interesting footage,I´d have to say that especially Nick´s gestures on his synth are a bit naf.And why the hell is Mr.Le Bon singing through a sort of first model mobile phone? The three Taylors get their act pretty much together but it still looks a bit like a Brummy Catholic schoolparty or something.Funny how they all gather to the stage when the song starts.

  • I saw these guys in 1981 when they were nobody. About 60 people in the bar that night. Could have easily spoke to them but did not. Kicking myself ever since....

  • When I was in Boulevard Noir we thought Duran were too pop, but it stands the test of time better than the 'serious' stuff back then

  • damn i bet you were well pissed i would of talked to them unlucky mate go to concert and talk to em there i think they hang out at the back

  • nice- totally lip sync'd and these guys only had on set of clothes in the day - same duds as the GOF- video huh- still the best song ever recorded -

  • errr 1) this ain't live, 2) why the heck they've given Simon a walkie talkie instead something that'd look more similar to a microphone?:D

  • Cool, I wish I lived back in those days. Thanks for the video!

  • Just shows you how great the drummer is! Roger is great! Than for posting

  • What happened to Fizzabelly's video of this. It was my second DD video

  • The COOLEST 80's Band ever!!! If it wasn't for bands like Duran Duran, U2, and Tears for Fears, I wouldn't have the drive that I have today to join a band of my own!!! Duran Duran alone motivates me to create art/rock in an avant garde kind of way. Thank you Duran Duran!!!

  • I bet you play these awesome, intense Durantastic songs, :d

  • What is Simon singing into? LoL

  • Holy crap! I almost took a heart attack when John Taylor smiled at Nick, danced, and then sang at :40 - :50. He's unbelievable!!!!

  • DURAN ETERNAL!

  • buenisimo. hey watch my videos

  • I tell ya, people must have thought this was pretty impressive back then, ya know, there's no cords running to the guitars, Simon' cordless phone(microphone), Nick thumbing the keyboard, Andy slapping the entire base. LOL its just funny thats all but one of the greatest if not the greatest bands ever... Thanks for sharing....

  • Andy plays guitar...John plays bass.

  • Ah John Taylor...simply gorgeous and delicious from the begining!!!

  • Respect for the New Romantics woo-hoo!

  • kids dancing to song about porn :D

  • umm ... the song was about super models ... the video was psuedo pornographic

  • Mr. Viking, do you work for Fox News? Your reality is so distorted!

  • wow. I still love em and you don't have me there

  • Duran totally rock

    wider baby......

  • Don't diss the Nick!!

  • fuck youuuuuuuuuuu!!!! who cares how nick plays the keyboard.. he's so fking cuteeeeee <333

  • It´s a f**** great song, but these morons hardly composed it!

Look at the keyboard player, how pathetic are his moves on a scale! As if you play the synthesizer by

turning knobs and pushing sliders up and down??!!

And his key slapping in the beginning. Hilarious!

Fakery and illusion at its highest(or lowest) level.

    Just like the WTC illusion.

  • who gives a toss , loads of things like top of the pops music was pre-recorded , its not like they mime all the time ..............

besides nick is f-ing great so who cares !

  • Hey u didn't get a great response, u Mozart u, is it?

    :)

  • Nick, is that you?

  • are you Andy Wickett? ;)

  • Ah, the days before the audience would shout back "I mean money, honey," after Simon sang "baby, you just made a million." :)

  • Awesome video!

  • brilliant duranduran 4ever grant

  • Does it matter if they are miming?

You'll never see anything quite like this again.

I don't care if they are. It's nice to see them anyway.

  • Lol, the kids are dressed up as on Planet Earth! Brilliant. Duran Duran all over.

  • "get ready for summer" TV special....July in England with rain gear.

  • Breaker one Nine..you got your ears on. Walkie Talkie...ohh bouy!!

  • but they are singing to a record....

  • LOL there still pimps!

  • thanks for posting this!!! I loved being a new romantic in chicago.

  • It's a mimed performance, you can tell by the sound which is EXACTLY the one from the recording and from the fact that the guitars are not plugged in.

  • Hey they were New Romantics :-) A celebration of style over substance. If they'd played live, he might not have been allowed to use his cool walkie-talkie microphone, which would have spoiled the whole performance.

  • I never really realized that about the guitars

  • this is great - i love the whole walkie-talkie headband thing

  • correction: it's 1:45 - 1:52

  • Well I'm not sure who she is, but given that this was 26 years ago, she'll probably be in her mid 40's by now. When I used to watch this video clip way back in 1981, I used to quite like her too :-)

  • OK even though i am a 19 yr old guy i quite like the girl in the top left hand corner of the screen (the one wearing the hoodie thing)

    she appears from 0:45 - 0:52

personally i think she's quite buff lol.

anyone know who she is? :P

  • that's hilarious - I read this before your second one, and I thought 'uh, that's simon...'

  • It was filmed at the BBC in Manchester - I was there!! I have my photos to prove it - and John kept standing on my white shoes and I got purple dye off his pixie boots on them - and I still have them too!

  • Pixie boots ... I used to know them as "Tukkas". I imagine that John Taylor would have had genuine Tukkas, and not one of the cheapo copycat brands which were floating around at the time! Where were you in the crowd on the video Julia?

  • I was on the platform somewhere at the front - but really miffed off coz you can't see me

  • What awesome footage of the band....I LOVE these rare appearances. Wish I was there too! Thank you so much for posting this great find!

  • this is awesome,I'd love to have been there

  • Everything was lipsynched then! Check out the live videos for the real DD - they totally rock! Ahhh 1981 just before they hit it really big, remember it well. This looks like they're playing at a school fete. So cute.

  • Where was this filmed? In Birmingham?

  • Damn it :( Lip Synching grrr

  • ummmm....what kind of microphone is that?

  • It's a cool New Romantic's microphone :-)

  • Oh, gee...takes me back! I just turned 41, but '81 seems like just yesterday... (saw Duran live in '82 & '83!)

  • Oh! And by the way they rock! This was the second song I heard from them.

  • Everytime I can't tell who is who. So can someone please post a response for me?

  • Well, Roger Taylor is on the drums, Nick Rhodes is on the keyboards, Andy Taylor is the one who has blond hair, Simon LeBon is singing and John Taylor plays the bass.

  • Nick Rhodes: keyboards Simon John Charles LeBon: vocal., John Taylor: bass, Andy Taylor: guitar, Roger Taylor: drums. None of the Taylors are related.

  • its lip synched

  • I think John was asking Nick which 20 of the birds in the crowd HE was going to bang. lol.

  • What a great clip ! Just love DURAN DURAN since 1980 !

    greetings, Ken Taylor, Belgium

  • ~laughs~ Im 41 and could have been in that crowd... I htought I was so cool... What a laugh. Thanks for reminding me how gloriously silly it was.

  • Love the one girl in white at the side of the audience 'doin' the dance all properly', she so knew she was the best..lol...superb clip

  • I think the two girls in white, (that you see from the back, high-up on the gantry, right at the start of the last verse) are the best dancers. They're so cool, I think I would marry either one of them right now!!

  • Yes, me too! I keep replaying this bit just because I like the way they dance. Thanks for the vid... truly awesome!

  • can anyone lip read what John is saying to Nick just before the first chorus

  • Thanx for sharing this rare footage..

  • No problem. They also performed "Careless Memories" and were interviewed too, on the same program. Unfortunately, my dad taped over these with Coronation Street, about 2 weeks after the broadcast. Anyone got them? After 25 years, I'd love to see the Careless Memories rendition again.

  • I would kill my dad instead of you. He is very lucky for having child like you...

  • omg, I am in LOVE with Nick.

what great quality considering it's 25 years old. I love seeing these old videos of them.

  • Fantastic video, I learned how to dance from watching this, and unfortunately still dance the same way and am approaching 40. Bugger.

  • Yes, the New Romantic dance is so cool. This clip is a must for any cultural and social historians out there :-)

  • I didnt learn how to dance from watching this video, but I still dance the same too, and...Im 40
