that was mind-blowing in 2006, now in 2010 we'll get a home-device that will allow the rest of us to dig into this kind of surface experience... I'am really keen on going to use Google Maps on an iPad soon :-)
@soloriens1 by "interface" he means the menus, toolbars, and other visual points that one uses to control the computer. Much like the start button on Windows, or the task bar etc...
the reason he is praising the "no interface" is because the system is what is called "intuitive". That means it doesn't need direction from a pre-set menu bar. It can "feel" what you are doing, and respond accordingly.
With all due respect to kokusay, i have to disagree, this technology allows your fingers to expand beyond the cramped confines of a keyboard, which in all probability relieve repetitive motion stresses on joints and the "infamous" carpal tunnel. It would allow you to configure your hand and wrist to your liking, with the added benefit of exercising both hands in dynamic ways.
This is a technology demonstration, of course he wouldn't have developed a complete OS to work with the system. Do you think that when the mouse was invented, it was instantly usable with every single program in existence? Anyways, the technology he shows here is already being integrated into computers nowadays. Ever used an iPhone or the multitouch trackpad on a Macbook?
this was amazing. I like the scalable keyboard. but can the virtual keyboard be programmed to modify itself to correct for ergonomic concerns... either manually or automatically? greast presentation
knowing that americans are sloppy nation - no wonder if that happens to them - they spill shit all over the places - work home apartment restaurants ... you name it
He means there IS no screen. It is almost like you are manipulating real photos, not just pixels on a screen. The idea that you are playing on a computer disappears, you are interacting with the stuff itself. If that makes any sense.
Sorry for seeming to speak so cruel. Although I don't know why. Anyway, I'm just looking at the humorous yet sarcastic side to this technology. Like the quote circulating in the internet: "Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning." Rich Cook.
Seriously, I don't know him. I just found some of his quotes among other similarly humorous quotes while looking for programming stuff. And since I've quoted him, might as well put his name. :)
Check out the HundredMilTechnology youtube video. You could use iPhone, etc. without touching the device at all! You could write text while eating pizza, and not create mechanical wear on the screen. That technology would have the user wear an "active component" as a bracelet or ring. As the active component moves through the air, its motion is tracked and converted into commands. So...the user would interact with the iPhone by moving their hands through the air... AWESOME!
before you know it your walls will be made out of this stuff...I can see the applications...stock market, scalable DJ equipment, I love it. And for all the MS haters, you hate so much but that means nothing to nobody :)
Gates saying this project was top secret? (via a MSNBC article under Money category titled Microsoft unveils revolutionary device dated May 30, 2007) Then why this video from 2006? hahahaha MS makes me laugh.
Awesome technology though! Many many applications possible. Artists alone would love it!
the microsoft adaption was probably top secret...this guy, i believe, is simply a student presenting a project he and colleagues have been working on, but at the time of this video no company had acquired the tech. i also laugh at the assumption made by those below that this would be an apple thing...believe it or not, apple does not have a patent on innovation
Where is the rationale there? Microsoft should get shelved simply based on the general crapiness of their interface ... not because of some ultrarad multitouch demonstration!
While this invention dosen't have me in shock over the technology involved, I do think if this came out in the next first year, it would be...well, awsome. We've all see this before on movies like the Minority Report, but I don't think someone has actually done it yet.
Plus the minority report version needed the glove-thing.
There is so much potential in this! Great for games, AND great for tons of applications. I think it would be so cool if the mouse becomes more and more out dated. It is so old, it seems that there should have been something to replace it by now.
ok, guys, its called the iphone and it comes out in june...same exact multitouch technology...its just a matter of time ( i would guess about 10-15 years ) before it comes out on mac laptops and desktop computers
i doubted tht 10-15 yrs time...once interface built...properly...they just need to change the things called mouse interface...and they already have mac os x in iphone...microsoft should aware tht ...they gona put in laptop probably in 2-3 yrs
I suspect that in the next couple of years we're going to see lots of interesting toys that no longer come equipped with mouse and keyboard - can't wait :-)
a rear projecttion display, which means it's huge, and what he doesn't tell you is the sensor is a camera mounted a few feet under the display with tracks his fingers, it's old, old technology wrangled in a different way and it'll never fit on your desk.
search for "JazzMutant" they've been selling a 15 inch multitouch LCD screen for a while now.
Read my post next time before replying, the iPhone uses a completely different method, the JazzMutant uses a completely different method also. I'm sick of this fucker getting all the credit when other people have already got better stuff on the market because he's got a few flashy demos.
all the credit? dude, this is youtube, not the cover of TIME. He is showing off work he is doing at a conference. He deserves credit for the work he has done, his ideas, and the cool tools he has working on a drafting size table. Also, he clearly acknowledges that he is not the only person working this.
Very interesting idea and technology that this man brought to this generation....well i've seen iphone and it strikes to my mind what steve jobs says about that technology.he intends to protect it! by the way got this first?
What does he mean when he's says google should have something like this in their lobby and everyone laughs? I don't get it!

what does he mean by that? sorry, my english is not that good

o-0' i think it means that there are no rules/instructions/set way to how it works.

you don't have to learn how to use it. With PCs you have to learn how to type and use a mouse. It's more natural with touch screen.

he means you virtually forget you're just waving your hands over a screen
