The Arctic is rich in gas & oil. But, it's recently been discovered that, "pull to much oil out of the Earth in the wrong places, will alter it's spin & make the moon, look like this"; watch?v=XRo5Y8X_OpA
,We should drill in Alaska, the ocean and any darn place we can so we can quite having to buy our oil from the countries that support terrorists. You liberal dribbles had better wake up.If all of the Arab countries can drill with out oil spills then so can we.Also you should be worried about the way the Mighty O is trying to led us-Straight to socialization he is on the fast track to complete government control of every acpect of your life .
Liar! I worked in Prudhoe Bay for eight years and there is ZERO warmth emitted from the pipeline! You've been duuped, halo00015, by the likes of convicted felon and former Alaska senator Ted Stevens. And the caribou now largely avoid the developed oil fields, despite the increased number in the Central Arctic Caribou Herd. On top of all that are the continuing spills in the oil fields, some that have spewed thousands of gallons across the arctic tundra. So some research before posting!
The only reason the bush admin. really has for drilling in ANWR aside from short-term profits for the oil lobby is the precedent it will set: if they can drill there, they can drill in many other pristine, protected areas. This will do nothing to lessen our addiction to oil and will not make gas any cheaper anytime soon. Meanwhile, America's last great places will be destroyed all for short-sighted, selfish intentions.
I too worked in Prudhoe Bay.....for eight years.....and have visited the refuge. That is why I then worked for many years to protect the refuge from drilling. I also have friends in the villages on the north slope and they too want to protect the refuge.
Wrong! The Porcupine Caribou Herd calve on the coastal plain of the refuge. There are also brown and polar bear, musk ox, wolves, arctic foxes and many other species of animals and birds in the refuge. Do some research before posting such drivel in the future!
I just spent a month living in Old Crow, Yukon, Arctic Village, AK, and Anaktuvuk Pass, AK, and a week in the Wildlife Refuge. The Gwich'in and Inupiaq Natives I lived with rely entirely on the caribou for their dietary and cultural survival. The caribou are an very sensitive keystone species, and will definitely be negatively impacted by oil development. Drilling will not lower gas prices one cent, as that money will go only to the oil companies.
watever, the point is that going to further and further extremes to extract oil in the name of energy indpendence is digging yourself deeper into the problem. Oil is not going to last forever. You should read Blood and Oil by Micheal Klare, it shows how much oil dependence fuels conflict world wide.
And the continual use of oil may cause an even worse disaster. i.e. Global Warming
Rather than focusing on the wise and unavoidable step of phasing out oil, Bush wants to go to more and more environmentally damaging ways to extract oil. Even if the ANWR is drilled it will have minimal impact on oil prices and attaining energy independence, its just buying a few more years and meanwhile one of the last untouched wildernesses in the world would have gone.
Energy Independence will only come through environmentally friendly renewables
kiriak! Your a typical lib, tree hugger ignorant, brainwashed fuck, who hasn't even been to ANWR, or anywhere here in Alaska! I have lived up here 27 yrs, traveled through parts of ANWR! Did you know that development would occur in only approx 10,000 acres? ANWR is "19 million acres in size"!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is bigger then some states! You emotional ignorant ass! Oh, and kiss my Alaskan ass,as well as our awesome Gov Palin! You fuck!!!
well done onlyoneak! screaming at me calling me liberal, tree hugger, brainwashed. that pretty much sums your mentality.
for your information the area they will be drilling in is the home of a species of caribou that will be threatened by drilling.
btw, hwo was $ 1000 dollars that the oil companies pay you?
And anyway the point is that drilling in the ANWR will have minimal impact on the oil prices. The ANWR is estimated to only hold 2 % of the volume oil that america imports
I'll chime in. Lived in Alaska for 25 years, worked in Prudhoe Bay for 8 years and have visited the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Your 10,000 acre (actually 2,000) figure is a lie. It is the figure for the drill pads only and does not include the hundreds of miles of roads, airports and other support infrastructure that will tie it all together. Do some research in the future before you spout off such drivel!
Please don't spout untruths here. As upinthelex said above, hte 2,000 acre figure does NOT include the hundreds of miles of roads and other infrastructure. In reality, the sprawl will stretch over 100 miles from east to west, going right thru the calving grounds of the Porcupine caribou herd. And saying that just because the 1002 area has no trees it is not worth saving is extremely ignorant and short-sighted. The arctic tundra is the most fragile of ecosystems. Do some research next time!
The population of polar bears has increased over the last 2 decades. Bears have survived across 2 ice ages. A warming arctic will be a boon for all. Alas, the arctic is cooling back down this year and sea ice is returning - rapidly. It is widely agreed that Antarctica is in a long term cooling trend. I haven't heard the earth first folks talk about that fact. Drill now.
Wow, I love when videos like these turn into micro wars. I think we should drill for oil EVERYWHERE. Kill off everything and burn our planet down. I've always wanted to see the apocalypse!
The are of Anwar that they actually want to drill is smaller than the square footage of land that The LAX airport actually sits on. Furthermore the are they want to drill on is close to 700 miles from the closest tree. But I guess enironmentalists are afraid of hurting the ice dirt and rocks.
The footprint of the oil rig is the size of LAX airport you are correct. How come you don't mention the 800 SQUARE MILES of infrastructure such as roads, pipelines, power plants, processing facilities, loading docks, dormitories, airstrips, gravel pits, utility lines and landfills that accompany it? Just curious. Do you think for yourself or do you just let other people do that for you?
Roads? There are thousands of miles of road in alaska alone, whats a few more? Pipelines? There was a big stink about the alaskan pipeline yet the actual damage done was less than ten percent of what environmentalists predicted. Dormitories? Nothing more than houses. Gravel pits? The area of anwar they want to drill on is baren rock and ice There isn't a tree, animal, or blade of grass for miles. Power plants? Power plants are incorporated into oil rigs, just look at the ones off shore.
Airstrips? Exactly what kind of planes do you think theyll be landing, Boeing 707's. There not going to need a full on airport. Just somewhere they can land simple cargo planes. And exactly what ecosystem will they be damageing by making an air strip. As I said before there isn't a tree within several hundred miles of the proposed drill site so they won't be cutting down any forests making an airstrip. Do you think for yourself, or do you let the hippies tell you what to think?
It's People like you want every body to think that drilling in anwar means destroying the mass majority of some beautiful fruitful wildlife ecosysytem. The reality is out of the 19 MILLION square acres of ANWAR, The total amount of land they would be setting aside for drilling efforts is only 2,000 acres TOTAL in a barren wasteland of ice and rock. An aerea where not even the carribou migrate through.
God Damn left wing liberal showing pictures like this the area thats going to be drilled in is a berren plain not a fucking mountain line and animals stay by oil plant for the warmth and caribou numbers have doubled since we put a couple plants in alaska
don't forget ohio, you can't drive between 2 cities without seeing a small pump in a field. hell, my great grandfather(or one of my elders, not entirely sure who) had one on his property.
what extra tax money? they get HUGE tax breaks to take our oil off the North Slope and then the majority of it goes out of our country to Canada and we get what is left with is less than 25% but because BP gets it so cheap to sell to other countries - we have to pay more - MUCH more in the USA!
BP is regulated on the percent of US Domestic oil it can sell to other nations. Which is why BP Canada drills it's own oil from beneath Canadian soil. If you research your claim, you'll find that the only product BP America sells to Canada is jet fuel refined at the BP Cherry Point Refinery in Blaine, Washington State. And, at that, they are only allowed to sell up to 15% of their jet fuel across the border from that refinery.
That is what they were claiming There had been a similar lawsuit a few decades earlier It resulted in the rig being put in a protective building Because the rig was still in this building the lawsuit got nowhere

You're putting the lie to all those claims that all Alaskan oil comes to America!Oooooo!!Telling the truth!!!From what I've heard, some of it goes to Japan and Kamchatka,as well.

Recently,a large group of Beverly Hills High School Alumni sued the school.Their contnention was, that the operating oil rig on campus(that helped make the campus one of the most bitchen high school campuses in the country)had given them the cancer they were suffering from. So,some people ARE concerned.Maybe not very many. But some.

Whether you are for or against drilling for oil in ANWR,understand this simple truth as to why the oil companies want to drill there;it's not on their land. They own plenty of land with oil underneath it,but don't want to drill there yet. They want to use up everybody elses oil first,THEN start selling us theirs.
Don't you think that if there was oil on that land that was profitable they would drill for it? Just because you have access does not make oil in the dirt.
Please post the formula and data used to arrive at your "2 cents a gallon in 20 years" statistic, or did you just make that up? Also include incident reports for your " 500 oil spills".
The problem with the 2 cents relief is that the politicians came up with it. There is no proof people just believe the lies. I was watching C-Span the other day and I saw Sen. Boxer (D-CA) talk about why the gas is 4 dollars a gallon. This was her equation. 8 Years/2 Oil Men in office. That's fucking retarded. She gave no solution but just blast the Republican ideas. Her whole argument seemed to be based on the equation of why oil is high.

Voters in Sacramento and San Francisco get her and Feinstein re-elected every time. The two of them are less popular in Southern California, for that very kind of thing. And,if you think the Right has a monopoly on God,both of them have said this in public;"San Francisco has the God given Right to the water in Hetch-Hetchy in Yosemite." Really? I thought San Francisco rigged an election and bribed the Supreme Court to get those water rights!
With the news out of Israel that Olmert resigned and the Defense Minister's word's to Iran oil went up over $4 a barrel. You haven't seen nothing yet.We must drill immediately for National Security! We give over 70 billion a year to people that hate our guts! Why cant we do eveything drilling research on Alternative Energy and higher standards on all car makers. We have 70 years of oil reserve's here.Oil Experts say oil drilling in and around the U.S. could take 2year minimum to 6 year maximum.
2/3 of all oil spills are from natural seepage. The next biggest percentage is from recreation watercraft and then oil production. I have seen pictures of caribou sitting around and living the big life right next to an oil rig. If you actually see pictures of the acres reserved for drilling and not ANWR then you wouldn't give a damn. Don't believe the lies. Harry Reid is the biggest idiot on the hill. watch this video v=R7mRSI8yWwg and you'll understand the lies politicians spew.
Yeah you beat me to it, annual seepage in the Gulf roughly equals twice that of the valdez leak, drilling actually relieves the pressure on the domes and decreases seepage.

Santa Barbara California has offshore oil rigs(some of them visible from the coast)for this very reason. When Californians voted to limit offshore drilling,Santa Barbara lobbied hard,to keep their oil rigs. They didn't want the big globs of oil that stick to swimmers, like what happens down the coast in the Hermosa and Redondo Beach areas.Where there are no offshore oil rigs.If it's coming up,anyway, why not scoop it up and use it?
All you damn environmentalist bastards trying to save our polar bears and carribou. I'll bet none of you have ever even seen the place. so who gives a flying fuck, Pay less at the pump. also none of the "facts" they stated in this video were even close to being true.
Thanks for pointing that out, I didn't want to take the time to do it because these environmentalist fuck-tards will never get it anyway. Wish more people were smat like you.
2,000 acres. All we will do is put a few oil towers in 2,000 acres out of 17 million. We will then be able to reach 8 million acres underground. Results: oil prices down, and even if that doesn't work, until we go to more cleaner forms of energy like T. Boone Pickens wants, why should we give hundreds of billions of dollars away to foriegn nations every year???? Espically the ones whos citizens want us dead. Wake up America, post this comment on every ANWR video to make the truth be told.
Oil is good for the economy, the reason why the economy is slumping is because of gas prices. Democrats can't understand this, it is the law of supply and demand. The more oil you get the cheaper it will be. The price of oil is high because the demand is higher than of the supply. Drilling will solve this problem, Venezuela pays pennies for a gallon of gas cause they have so much. Don't tell me that drilling will lower the gas price only $0.02 in 20 years!!!!!!!!!
Dems say releasing 10% of the oil reserves would lower gas prices 20 cents a gallon...that's enough to supply us for 1/2 day. Yet, they can't understand why millions of barrels of oil would lower prices. The worst part is that people are actually falling for the bullshit agenda (from the far left....ass-hats.).
none of the animals live ANWR you fucking tree huggers, so YOU are the fuckers who are selling a lie.....all because you don't wanna harm a fucking piece of grass.
Gee...is it down to $.02 per gallon in 10 years now? When are you tree huggers going to make up your mind?
Tell you what, all of you liberal idiots stop driving. That will lower the price of gas for us normal people. Do it for your environmental religion and your god, Mother Earth.
Again, language and thoughts like this commentator's (phswestvirginia), unfortunately indicate a lack of true understanding and concern for their fellow man. This type of thinking will only lead to further division and lack of progress in our precious human society.

WOW, now that's what I call baloney !!! Who did the research 4 this one. Will people wise up and start thinking for themswelves!! You'll find out wildlife is flourishing around oil dereks and drilling sites pristine.
And by the way.. ANWAR IS A DESOLATE SHEET OF TUNDRA. Not the pictures of muntains and streams you see on proppaganda sites like this. DO YUR RESEARCH AMERICA and WAKE UP. We'll all soon be paying $ 10 per gallon.
First off, it is not ANWAR, but ANWR, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Secondly, it is not a "desolate sheet of tundra. It supports the calving grounds of the Porcupine Caribou Herd as well as polar and brown bear, wolves, arctic foxes and many other species of animals and waterfowl. Do some research in the future before posting, o.k.?
Thats a crock of shit!!!! Be lucky im not the president or own a oil rig cause id make a statement to you tree hugging animal loving death fearing hippies! And make a statement and start drilling in the artic refug!
The botoom line is america consumes 80% of ther worlds oil. Americans have to reduce the amount of usage by switching to differnt uses of fuel cell. In norway they dont use gas they use hydrogen fuel cells. From water!!! The earth is covered with water.
Really, greenpeace cares about human lives? All they care about is the environment, if they cared about human lives, they would be all for using our own energy.
Yes I did the Vancouver Electric Vehicle association (google VEVA)I belong to has a 1912 Detroit Electric. The original Nickel-Iron batteries were replace just recently, not because they no longer held a charge, but because battery case had corroded away to nothing.
-Our EV cost us $20,000, include donor vechicle. Internal combustion engine requires over 600 moving part and is 20% efficient. EV's should cost less as have less moving parts, motor 85% eff allows them to be smaller. The main problem is the batteries Li-ion are very expensive economies of scale will bring these cost down. GM's Volt is targeted $30,000.
As for batteries Li-ion is very recyclable in fact many recyclers will pay for old laptop batteries. .....
I agree about the dollar & refining. ANWR California and Florida have known about for many yrs. Do you think speculation be positive or negative once we tap these untouched source with no or few new future prospects of drilling? I think we should to use this opportunity and desire for change (in energy) to fuel improvement in efficiency and sources. If prices go down the drive to improve may drop too an we back to this again. Anyway I think I have beaten my point to death.
... But when in North America we waste over 90% (less than 1% energy consumed by a car goes to move my ass across town) of energy consumed in form of inefficiency and that by 2010 or soon after there will full size vehicles available with 100+ MPG mileage (Chevy Volt 160MPG, Plug-in Prius...) I would like to see demand to change these problems & solution take a higher proiority.
Myself and 9 others converted a GMC Sonoma to Electric drive I had it up to 70mph and had a range of 100km (old lead acid batteries, range 5x with Li-ion) cost about $0.02/mile to drive, if we can do it so can GM. The guy who wired the controller the message therapist It was a lot of work, but wasn't that difficult. If auto companies wanted to they could produce EVs that are way better that the one we made, we need to demand these vehicles.
I understand the reaction I drive and I am not wealthy. However I know that Canada production of crude (Canada has second largest reserves in the world) oil has been increasing crude output exponentially and is planed to quadrupal output in the comming years yet that fact and news has no effect on the market. Supply is not the problem. The demand increases are not proportional to price increase. I'm not a economist but price seem artifically high.
I consider myself one of those crazy wackos, who values clean air and water over new rims for an Escalade, but I also condider myself a realist I don't live in geothermally heated tree trunk, I drive a small car and bike as often as I can. If it is determine after careful consideration the civilation cannot continue without mining these senstive regions then you can count me in. Continued...
I'll be calling my Senators immediately and tell them to:
DRILL, DRILL, DRILL!!!
Part of the reason we are in this situation today is because of you environmental wackos. Can't build a hydro dam here because we might kill a certain minnow. Can't explore for resources there because it's a snail's mating ground. And look at the doom and gloom predicted for the caribou with the Alaska pipe line. But why worry, the coming ice age is going to kill us all! Oh I forgot, it's global warming now.
The problem is that China and India have increased there demand of crude massively. Estimated at about 7% increase/ year.
I can see you have rationally looked at this issue your information is well thought-out, my point is that oil is finite we need to get serious about finding alternatives relative to the rest of world's demand for ANWR is drop in the bucket, knee jerk reactions to something this important is something to be wary of.
you wackos are so full of shit...just the news that we would drill would lower gas prices...save the cricket and screw the American family...get a grips assholes
Alberta Oil sands (2 trillion barrel deposit second largest in the world) output in Canada have double in the last couple of years to become the US's largest soucre of crude oil, yet prices are still rocket upwards.
Lower demand find alternatives will lower gas prices and extended life of oil reserves.
There is more competition for grain and other raw materials. I don't know if you have noticed be commodity prices have rocketed up fast than oil price, copper, gold, zinc, lead, steel all through the roof.
Oil "companies" got the world by the balls there only going to squeeze as tight a they can get away with. As consumer the only way to fight back is not to buy there product. Reducing our usage of oil is only to reduce price they control supply we control demand.
strong dollar policies are responsible for most increases in price. the dollar has been devalued.increasing oil supply would drive down the price greatly. the price of gas in suadi arabia and iran is 18 cents per gallon.
In Canada off coast of Newfoundland Exxon and Shell were given premission off shore drilling. But they didn't even though were very feasible and rich deposit, but they hung on to the rights to drill. The Province (state) try to pass a law stating that they had 5 years to do something with drilling rights or loose them, but that was shot down our corrupt Federal gov
Fuel prices will not go down! Drill of coast Florida, California, and ANWR great you got more oil, but the price will not go down because Oil companies refuse to build new refineries no new refineries been built in 30yrs and there current half as many operation than in 1981 all while demand climbed steadily. And why should they build more refineries? It only increases costs and reduce profits. We need to fine alternatives. Corn & food ethanol isn't the answer, but Cellulosic is promising.
I'm all for clean renewable energy but we are not there yet. Open ANWR and off shore drilling as part of a comprehensive plan that ends with total clean renewable energy transition within 20-30 years. Just passing a comprehensive plan that doesn't play politics will eliminate the speculation that has caused the oil futures market to explode. Prices will drop to normal almost overnight, not two cents in twenty years. Gas prices are hurting people badly, these fools doesn't care. They're clueless.
how about showing a small video of the area and asking the local aboriginal support if any thing mentioned is alie, you know, people believe people and really not polictics, this is just beginning of the Americain global cover up, you'll notice the the americian and candian are the worse lier in the world, again just the beginning, I'm an Shuswap and I see this BS everyday!
This video is a lie...so as a punishment for this lie we should make every EnviroNazi drive electric cars. Make them live in their own Nervana phsycosis for a while.
I live in Akron Ohio and had recieved some time ago a link to a video of a newscast from the Cleveland local newschannel(cant remember which). The newscast had a brief story about an akron man while working on a cure for cancer had unintentionally invented an engine process by which the engine would run on SALTWATER. I fully expected this to end up being a HUGE story but to my suprise there has been NADA NIL ZILCH I have ever heard again! What gives..are big oil corps hiding somehow?N E 1 know?
I too have seen the story you were talking about. It was a pretty cool thing to see, but it isn't really a fuel source. The process required that the water be split into into hydrogen and oxygen by radio waves before they were combusted. You have to put as much energy in as you get out of it.
electric cars ARE some of the answer - powered by nuclear power plants. Plug in the car, go to work.
Cars commuting 10-20 miles each way will become electric. NOT because of 'carbon', but when nuclear comes on line, it will make the most sense, ie., cheaper.
The real cat-in-the-hat is that all prices are rising, coal has almost doubled in a year...we are so screwed
These liberal fuck faces want to have zillions of acres of windmills, trillions of acres of solar panels, yet you can extract oil/ gas energy via a hole 5 metres across??
These pieces of work that posted this vid are not ready for your facts and knowledge. They'd rather just dream of electric cars and planes that run on happy feelings.
It's so god damned funny how much information these tards don't have such as a solar output vs amps and ethanols co2 emissions 3 times as bad as gasoline.......absolute mind numbing the simple minds that post this trash on youtube. Why morons voice their biased fake garb is beyond logic.
So, in the future, you would rather have your kids live in tent cities and be rationed water and bleached flour just so long as those poor animals are not relocated.
Your twisted logic and biased studies are starting to show their true colors and NOBODY but your fucktard hippie friends are buying it.
Yes, I think we'd all rather have our kids living in tent cities being rationed water and bleached flour, just as long as those poor animals aren't forced to relocate.
Liberal trash like this video is the earths cancer.
The Arctic Refuge is the last 5% of the Alaskan coastal plain that hasn't been opened for drilling and seismic exploration. It has been likened to the Serengeti, and represents the last fully preserved ecosystem left in the U.S. Drilling there would yield a drop in the bucket compared to the world oil market. It would also destroy the economy of the Gwich'in eskimos who have lived there for thousands of years. The only ones who stand to gain from drilling in ANWR are filthy rich oil tycoons.
What proof do you want that this video is pure BULLSHIT. And now that I know it's' bullshit I am calling all your environmentalists out of your caves to debate this. You people and your lies are more dangerous than any terrorist in the world. My guess is you hippies use the same lies to pass on the global warming bullshit as well. FUCK YOU HIPPIED- no if you'll excuse me I'm going to burn a tire and eat an owl.
It is bullshit! There have been 400 to 500 spills since the pipeline was built, not every year!A spill at the pipeline is nothing like a spill from a ship, they are very small and every spill has been cleaned up and any contaminated soil etc removed! The biggest spill was a deliberate explosion, I assume set by an environmentalist.
If killing people put food on your kids table would you be all for that too? Don't be part of the problem, be part of the solution. Get a new job, etc. And heck I am a Conservative but this drilling is out of control. We have to get away from oil it is too damn destructive.
I'm so sick of hearing about the "evil crazy liberals" Don't you idiots get the point? We don't NEED to drill for more oil when so much technology exists to have gas-less cars! Or at the very least better fuel economy
Drilling ANWR is a dead end and just puts more money in ExxonMobils pockets and more pollution in the air. Why are you defending them?
Save the Artic refuge for whom? Once again libs put mosquitos and fish ahead of human life. I wonder if we started abortions on polar bears if they'd be against abortion?
P.S if we don't drill for oil, how will algore and the liberal rich elite get fuel for their jets and fuel for their mansions?
I don't see where "putting a mosquitoes life ahead of a humans" fits in here. the entire human race won't be extinquished just because we don't drill there
cant you smell the oil and the dollar bills coming screw the little fishs and bugs you people so want to save cause your afraid of DEATH! get a life drill for oil
thats right, that is complete fact. It would barely lower gas prices at all. Is there nothing in this world we don't see as ours to take at will? Humans who think that way are the only "bullcrap" in this world. I dont give a fuck if we are put out. Nothing gives us the right to reap that land and carelessly put in danger those lives within it.
and a big fuck you. your life is clearly worth less than that of any animal.
While you are "smelling",do yo also smell the demand that China and India are now placing on the world's oil reserves? Do you smell the evil that the Mid -East countries are doing with the money off our oil dollars? Wake up,profits drive everything.
Uh, and that makes it okay? .. of course profit drives everything. Nothing will ever make raping our planet somehow okay and disregarding all other life besides our own. Humans are the only truly evil species on earth.
Once that oil is gone, and the next, and the next.. then what? Eventually we will be forced to focus on alternative engery and forced to get over our greed but by then the planet will be fucked beyond repair.
Our country has been hijacked by a few people who control everything through lies, violence and fear. This administration is pure evil. Do not beleive what they say. They control the media. They know if they lose this election they will have major jail time because of 9-11 Demand the truth and vote these jerks out! Hope they don't hrow the election with these new voting machines.
the facts may have been exaggerated, but you have to remember, more oil doesn't necessarily mean better prices for consumers. We have to remember that after cost of infrastructure, taxes and profits (for oil companies), there isn't much to go around to the consumers.
It's not well cited. Where did they get their facts? Yes, I know oil spills can be deadly, but lowering prices by only 2 cents a gallon??? Bullcraaaaap!!!! They had an agenda, a good one albeit, but surely there is a safe way to use our own resources. Our country has been hustled by terrorist harboring countries over gas for long enough.
No, that is complete fact. It would barely lower gas prices at all. Is there nothing in this world we don't see as ours to take at will? Humans who think that way are the only "bullcrap" in this world. I dont give a fuck if we are put out. Nothing gives us the right to reap that land and carelessly put in danger those lives within it.

Why is it that so many of the pro drilling people here use ad-hominem attacks? Could it be they have nothing else ot back up their statements?
falcoperegrinus82 3 years ago
The only reason the bush admin. really has for drilling in ANWR aside from short-term profits for the oil lobby is the precedent it will set: if they can drill there, they can drill in many other pristine, protected areas. This will do nothing to lessen our addiction to oil and will not make gas any cheaper anytime soon. Meanwhile, America's last great places will be destroyed all for short-sighted, selfish intentions.
falcoperegrinus82 3 years ago
ERM did you ask the alaskan natives what they think of drilling in ANWR
i work in prudhoe bay and work with a lot of people from the villages and they seem to want the drilling to continue.
i bet most of the people/environmentalists posting here dont have a clue whats really going on up there.
happilymarried81 3 years ago
I too worked in Prudhoe Bay.....for eight years.....and have visited the refuge. That is why I then worked for many years to protect the refuge from drilling. I also have friends in the villages on the north slope and they too want to protect the refuge.

To clear up some of the below misconceptions...
Drilling will not lower gas prices one cent, as that money will go only to the oil companies.
ew73105 3 years ago 3
watever, the point is that going to further and further extremes to extract oil in the name of energy indpendence is digging yourself deeper into the problem. Oil is not going to last forever. You should read Blood and Oil by Micheal Klare, it shows how much oil dependence fuels conflict world wide.
And the continual use of oil may cause an even worse disaster. i.e. Global Warming
kiriakufromcyprus 3 years ago
Rather than focusing on the wise and unavoidable step of phasing out oil, Bush wants to go to more and more environmentally damaging ways to extract oil. Even if the ANWR is drilled it will have minimal impact on oil prices and attaining energy independence, its just buying a few more years and meanwhile one of the last untouched wildernesses in the world would have gone.
Energy Independence will only come through environmentally friendly renewables
kiriakufromcyprus 3 years ago 3
You fuck!!!
onlyoneak 3 years ago
well done onlyoneak! screaming at me calling me liberal, tree hugger, brainwashed. that pretty much sums your mentality.
for your information the area they will be drilling in is the home of a species of caribou that will be threatened by drilling.
btw, hwo was $ 1000 dollars that the oil companies pay you?
And anyway the point is that drilling in the ANWR will have minimal impact on the oil prices. The ANWR is estimated to only hold 2 % of the volume oil that america imports
kiriakufromcyprus 3 years ago
I'll chime in. Lived in Alaska for 25 years, worked in Prudhoe Bay for 8 years and have visited the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Your 10,000 acre (actually 2,000) figure is a lie. It is the figure for the drill pads only and does not include the hundreds of miles of roads, airports and other support infrastructure that will tie it all together. Do some research in the future before you spout off such drivel!
pkerber 2 years ago
Please don't spout untruths here. As upinthelex said above, hte 2,000 acre figure does NOT include the hundreds of miles of roads and other infrastructure. In reality, the sprawl will stretch over 100 miles from east to west, going right thru the calving grounds of the Porcupine caribou herd. And saying that just because the 1002 area has no trees it is not worth saving is extremely ignorant and short-sighted. The arctic tundra is the most fragile of ecosystems. Do some research next time!

The are of Anwar that they actually want to drill is smaller than the square footage of land that The LAX airport actually sits on. Furthermore the are they want to drill on is close to 700 miles from the closest tree. But I guess enironmentalists are afraid of hurting the ice dirt and rocks.
AcomsRazor1776 3 years ago
The footprint of the oil rig is the size of LAX airport you are correct. How come you don't mention the 800 SQUARE MILES of infrastructure such as roads, pipelines, power plants, processing facilities, loading docks, dormitories, airstrips, gravel pits, utility lines and landfills that accompany it? Just curious. Do you think for yourself or do you just let other people do that for you?
upinthelex 3 years ago
AcomsRazor1776 3 years ago
AcomsRazor1776 3 years ago
It's People like you want every body to think that drilling in anwar means destroying the mass majority of some beautiful fruitful wildlife ecosysytem. The reality is out of the 19 MILLION square acres of ANWAR, The total amount of land they would be setting aside for drilling efforts is only 2,000 acres TOTAL in a barren wasteland of ice and rock. An aerea where not even the carribou migrate through.

Then where do you think that the extra tax money from BP goes?
MilkMan2828 3 years ago 2
what extra tax money? they get HUGE tax breaks to take our oil off the North Slope and then the majority of it goes out of our country to Canada and we get what is left with is less than 25% but because BP gets it so cheap to sell to other countries - we have to pay more - MUCH more in the USA!
amigamaria001 3 years ago
BP is regulated on the percent of US Domestic oil it can sell to other nations. Which is why BP Canada drills it's own oil from beneath Canadian soil. If you research your claim, you'll find that the only product BP America sells to Canada is jet fuel refined at the BP Cherry Point Refinery in Blaine, Washington State. And, at that, they are only allowed to sell up to 15% of their jet fuel across the border from that refinery.
JussTreddn 3 years ago
That is what they were claiming There had been a similar lawsuit a few decades earlier It resulted in the rig being put in a protective building Because the rig was still in this building the lawsuit got nowhere

2/3 of all oil spills are from natural seepage. The next biggest percentage is from recreation watercraft and then oil production.
Saniu100 3 years ago
Dems say releasing 10% of the oil reserves would lower gas prices 20 cents a gallon...that's enough to supply us for 1/2 day. Yes I did the Vancouver Electric Vehicle association (google VEVA)I belong to has a 1912 Detroit Electric. The original Nickel-Iron batteries were replace just recently, not because they no longer held a charge, but because battery case had corroded away to nothing.
CleanGreen13 3 years ago
... Plugin-Hybrid batteries last for 15 years for Nickel metel Hydride batteries longer for Li-ion. For EV's it depends on how and how far you drive.
Even if every EV was powered by coal power plants emission would be less due to the efficiency gains of EVs.
CleanGreen13 3 years ago
-Our EV cost us $20,000, include donor vechicle. Internal combustion engine requires over 600 moving part and is 20% efficient. EV's should cost less as have less moving parts, motor 85% eff allows them to be smaller. The main problem is the batteries Li-ion are very expensive economies of scale will bring these cost down. GM's Volt is targeted $30,000.
As for batteries Li-ion is very recyclable in fact many recyclers will pay for old laptop batteries. .....
CleanGreen13 3 years ago
I agree about the dollar & refining. ANWR California and Florida have known about for many yrs. Do you think speculation be positive or negative once we tap these untouched source with no or few new future prospects of drilling? I think we should to use this opportunity and desire for change (in energy) to fuel improvement in efficiency and sources. If prices go down the drive to improve may drop too an we back to this again. Anyway I think I have beaten my point to death.
Good discussion.

CleanGreen13 3 years ago
Myself and 9 others converted a GMC Sonoma to Electric drive I had it up to 70mph and had a range of 100km (old lead acid batteries, range 5x with Li-ion) cost about $0.02/mile to drive, if we can do it so can GM. The guy who wired the controller the message therapist It was a lot of work, but wasn't that difficult. If auto companies wanted to they could produce EVs that are way better that the one we made, we need to demand these vehicles.

I too have seen the story you were talking about. It was a pretty cool thing to see, but it isn't really a fuel source. The process required that the water be split into into hydrogen and oxygen by radio waves before they were combusted. You have to put as much energy in as you get out of it.

Earth First!.....We'll drill the rest of the galaxy later.

cant you smell the oil and the dollar bills coming screw the little fishs and bugs you people so want to save cause your afraid of DEATH! get a life drill for oil

thats right, that is complete fact.

America only need to drill on a 2 square mile area in Anwar.Drill the oil.

Yeah man.. I can smell profit! Let's rape the planet! (or what's left of it)
namrekus 5 years ago
While you are "smelling",do yo also smell the demand that China and India are now placing on the world's oil reserves? Do you smell the evil that the Mid -East countries are doing with the money off our oil dollars? Wake up,profits drive everything.
label1877 5 years ago

We have to remember that after cost of infrastructure, taxes and profits (for oil companies), there isn't much to go around to the consumers.
leader2one 5 years ago
It's not well cited. Where did they get their facts? Yes, I know oil spills can be deadly, but lowering prices by only 2 cents a gallon??? Bullcraaaaap!!!! They had an agenda, a good one albeit, but surely there is a safe way to use our own resources. Our country has been hustled by terrorist harboring countries over gas for long enough.
