  • dammmmm you do make using that skew look easy... but i am practising cheers.

  • Hi Carl What size or model of chuck is that? I mainly turn things in the 1 to 5 inch size and I don't want to get something too small or overly big.

    Thanks

    Charles

  • @nicholls611 Hi Charles, I use a "Nova Chuck" you can change the inserts to turn very small stuff.

  • Well the turning store didn't have a square skew in stock but they did have a 1/2" bowl gouge. Cant wait to try it out. Too cold today so I'll go out early tomorrow and getbthe heat going early.

  • @carr869 Sound good heat is a good thing :) I just uploaded a new video. I turned a piece of the Pear wood.

    Thanks again,

    Carl

  • Carl, Thanks for all your videos. Could you spend some time on finshing end grain. Is most of the smoothness accomplished by sharp tools or very slow turning.

    Thanks

  • @nokobill Yes sharp tools are a big part of it. A nice clean cut will help a great deal. Sanding in both directions helps out too.

  • Howdy from SC, I had to watch this one again. My skew chisel skills are lacking to say the least. Also I use an oval skew instead of square cut like yours. Guess I need to make a new one. I see what your saying about the heel catching and riding up. I seem to do that alot. But I am getting a little better with it. Thanks again for the videos and sharing your skills with us. (Tom)

  • @carr869 Hi Tom, some people like the oval I just started with the square so I stayed with it.

  • i have a bradford pear that had fallen 2 years ago.Can i turn it now?

  • @lanegjones You can turn it anytime. The rule of thumb is an inch per year to dry.

  • Face Shield!!!!!!!

  • @Aharndts Yes, I forgot to mention Face Shield.

  • Great video Carl, very helpful.

  • @JMRTwins Thank you,

  • I thought it might be the angle or bevel. I might have just not had pressure on it.

  • Hi Carl. How do you keep the skew from jumping and runnning up the piece of wood. I wasn't sure what i was doing wrong.

  • @MrLeonard55 Glade to hear it was just the wood. I just keep pressure on it with my thumb and take light cuts.

  • thank you for all the great basic information and demonstration. I just found your channel recently and don't have any background in turning. this helps a lot. thanks

  • @truckpipe Thank you.

  • Thanks for another great video!

In the last 2 weeks I've been trying to use the skew more often, still catching, but getting better. :)

On a side note, I just bought a laptop and putting WIFI into my workshop so I can watch your videos and turn around to the lathe and attempt what you just showed.

  • @zfotoguy71 Thank you. Keep the laptop a safe distance away. :) I cannot count the number times I have had it catch and still have it catch.

  • The skew is a great finishing tool most people are afraid of it .nice video Carl some great tips

    Take care

    Robbie.

  • @robbiethewood Thanks Robbie, The more I use it the more comfortable and the more useful I find it.

    Take care,

    Carl

  • Wish you would have shown how to make the point you made around 9 mins into the video here but otherwise its great. I want that tool!

  • @nicholls611 I'll do a finial video soon.

  • I really screwed up with the skew tonight, lol.

  • @MrLeonard55 Are you alright? :)

  • @haydenHD Oh yes. I just wasted a lot of wood.

  • Very informative... Thanks !

  • @1339LARS Thanks Lars.

  • Send your products to Germany? And how much does it cost?

    What is your email address?

    regards

    K. Heyde

  • Learn something everytime I watch your videos. Thank you. (Tom)

  • @carr869 Thanks Tom, thanks again for the wood.

  • hey carl.....great video..and i must say i wish that i had a band saw and a drill press.....and as far as im concerned if you have a good sharp skew it is one of the most important tools you can use......ps i will be shipping that box-elder soon (its at school in the wood shop....and im suspended but when i get back i will mail it\

    --cody

  • Thanks Cody. Looking forward the box-elder. I hope you did not get yourself into too much trouble.

    Carl

  • @haydenHD oh...not too much...just enough to keep my principal busy for a few days

  • @TheFishingschool It's all good. Try and stay out of too much trouble. I look forward to the wood.

  • Thanks for this!

  • Thanks for the tips on equipment. I appreciate the help.

  • Glad to help. Thank you.

  • Thanks for the tips Carl.

  • @MrLeonard55 Thanks Leonard,

  • Thank You For Showing Also this is very relaxing hah. : )

  • @instantwagner Thanks yes very relaxing.

  • It appears that the removable carbide-tip tools may revolutionize the turning craft. I'm Seeing a lot of people on the Tube using, and talking about how well they work.

When you get up this way, Bring a piece of wood and give me a private lesson. Lots of good information here Carl. THANKS

  • @BradburyGuy Thanks Guy, How does next weekend sound? I'm free on Saturday.

    Take care,

    Carl

  • @haydenHD Saturday sounds fine. Looking forward to it.

  • It's funny, when I saw your finial I immediately thought of bobham5! I guess I'm getting a chuck for christmas, so I'll find out around then how hard it is. ;) Nice work, and thanks for the tips! The skew is definitely my favorite tool as a beginner turner!

  • @larfsen Very cool I think you'll like the chuck.

    Take care,

    Carl

  • very nice tutorial carl, i like the angle of the view. one of the easiest skews i've found so far is the alan lacer's skew. they tend not to catch too often :)

i've heard high recommendations about the easy wood tools, but learning the real deal is something much more interesting.

    best wishes to you,

    jake

  • @paloarteinc Thanks Jake, Yes learning a skill invaluable.

    Take care,

    Carl

  • I have always had issues with the skew. I turned 17 spindles for a bench last year in my high school wood shop class and the skew gave me trouble the whole time! I had mostly had a problem with chatter so I used gouges where i could instead of the skew. Maybe I should try that easy wood tool, but I did pretty well with the goughe too.

  • @GDLutz The carbide cutter tools are easy to use but the skew is a very useful tool as well.

  • I dont do any wood working but I still love your videos :)

  • @danielcarmi305 Thanks,
