As coming from a country with Gay Marriage completely legalized (and proud of it too), you should be voting for Ron Paul regardless of your argument because if anything - when the USA collapses and the paper of the dollar is worth more than the note itself - I'm pretty sure his definition of a federal law that unnecessarily gives out monetary benefits won't fucking matter. So please, at least consider him because your country won't live to have proper gay rights without his fiscal policies first
Politicians are just bad magicians. They try to pull a rabbit out of the hat but in the end a lot of rabbits get hurt and they still want you to applauded them.
Any time in our history when we have had to overcome oppression of a group, the Federal government has needed to step in: women's voting rights, equal pay regardless of gender (which we are still working on), segregation, slavery, etc. Gay marriage is no different. We need a constitutional amendment to protect equality (and marriage) for homosexuals.
Its not the government that's the entire problem, and I think, in this case, it's more of the people we have to convince for gay marriage than the people we're electing.
Letting the states make the decision regarding gay marriage is letting government make the decision regarding gay marriage. Either way governments - Federal or State Governments - are involved in making the decision. He is truly full of shit and is trying to side-step the issue by claiming the Government should not be involved.
@garysdeskcom "If we want to have something to say about marriage, it should be at the state level, not the federal level". It's pretty clear that he doesn't support government marriage, but accepts the idea that if it had to exist, it should be at the state level. Ron Paul doesn't support privatizing marriage any less, he just knows the political reality. I'm still waiting for the other candidate who's willing to take on the "Traditional Family" complex the government seems to push.
Oh Nick I laugh at your your flat view of Ron Paul, although I don't agree with him being a Libertarian Republican. As a libertarian though Ron Paul's viewpoint believes that the government should be small & out of your personal life. Ergo NO MARRIAGE BENEFITS for anyone & reduction on taxes. In fact he has always wanted to dismantle the IRS for many years. Moreover, Libertarians don't believe in Marriage laws against Same-Sex couples because it blocks the American pursuit of happiness.
@nicktalk215 of course u had to go for the ad hominem attack. typical and lame. anyway, u clearly r not familiar with dr. paul's stance on many issues. please do some research b4 u put urself out there and make a vid. if my typing leads people to not take me seriously i can't imagine what ur vids do but i digress. dr. paul wants to close the irs. that has been part of his platform for years. that obviously includes how marriage benefits. duh.
@ftwbk If you think that society can survive with federal taxes then you are beyond delusional. I am so tired of you libertarians thinking that taxes and the government are to blame for everything. So to put it your way "U r 2 crazi nd irrational 4 any1 to take u srrsly"
u seem to have made up ur mind b4 checking the details. hmm, did u vote for obama or support him? what is his position on gay marriage? ron paul doesn't want any married couple to get federal benefits. did u not understand that part? and i hope u don't think that the civil war was fought over slavery lol. i know u despise personal freedom and want the gov't to act like ur parent or become ur "church." very sad.
If you listen and follow him closely you would realize that there would be no benefits for anyone because you would pay no taxes therefore where is the issue? live and let live is what I get out of it, less government intrusion, so who else has even come close in the last 100 years to that kind of vision, ahh nobody, think about what you are saying and be sure, you are not looking at the entire picture.
Also, you seem to trash State's rights. State's rights is an impartial concept that NEEDS to exist, just like Free Speech. You can point of slavery and how states lagged, but I can point out Women's Suffrage and Drug Laws and the Federal lag. Free Speech, in the same manner, can mean anything; it's a governmental tool.
Really your argument that somehow supporting DOMA is against state's rights is confusing, and I'm not sure how you even arrived at that conclusion. Ron Paul is right, DOMA does protect states. It does create a federal definition of marriage (Section 3), but that doesn't influence the state level. As Paul stated, the "intent" of the act was to protect the state's definition of marriage after Hawaii legalized it (Section 2).
@407clr it is not confusing at all. DOMA prevents same-sex couples from receiving federal marriage benefits. If a state legalizes same-sex marriage, gay couples who marry will not receive the benefits that their straight counterparts would. By legalizing same-sex marriage, a state is implying that it believes that same-sex couples should be in equal standing as straight couples. DOMA prevents a pro-same-sex marriage state from making their citizens more equal.
@nicktalk215 Furthermore, being gay, I believe gay/straight marriage is inherently discriminating against singlehood (something I also am). Perhaps you should complain about the government social engineering via tax benefits. I don't think it's a function of government to promote "families". Paul is the only one really pushing that position.
Great critical analysis once again! I introduced my friend Eric to your videos (he's the sociology professor who commented on your facebook page), and he has nothing but praise for you. This was a really interesting exploration of the concept of libertarianism, and how flawed it can be. Esp. in the case of gay rights.
Anyway, I'm a huge fan and I think your videos could get really popular if you keep at it. Also, you're helping me stay in touch with American politics which is really useful. xx
The conservative myth liberty based on getting the government out of our lives supposes that if the power vacuum left by deregulation will not be filled by corporations, crony capitalism, and religious organizations. Who do you want running your life democratic government or good old boys, corporations and televangelists. I don't like the laws against pot, but I wouldn't want big pharm free from any regulation.
His views may be questionable, but from what I've gathered, he is nothing but honest, he isn't funded by big business, he supports the rights of individuals in a country that was founded on the basis of individual freedom, he voted against the patriot act and gives reasoned arguments that aren't properly summed up in 2 second clips taken out of context. Please try and put together a better argument, rather than bash us with sarcasm and disrespect in future, we're sick of petty name calling.
Study up a little harder! Ron Paul doesn't want the Federal Government to give money or extra rights to straight people either! He is against the government taking care of people cradle to grave including straight people! Also you made a comment that gay people are oppressed to the level of slaves?! You are an idiot! I get the analogy but to compare gay oppression to slavery shows a supreme lack of insight! You are free to do whatever you wish in this country barring marrying the same sex!
@deanandrew I was not comparing the levels of oppression of gay people and slaves, I was comparing the political tactics used during that time period. Also calm down with the exclamation points, just because you use them doesn't make you right, it makes you idiotic.
Once Paul's acolytes find this, you'll be inundated with their fantasies.
Paul is a homophobe. He's on record a calling some whom he thought was gay (but who was not) "gay as blazes," thus articulating his belief that lgbtq people ought to go to Hell.
Also, his questionable Libertarian views will not pan out; he's a REPUBLICAN, and will need to serve his GOP masters if he becomes President (but, he won't).
If we are going to have a republican in office, as far as i know ron paul is our biggest ally...he isnt great...but we have people like rick perry and michele bachmann, that are so far against it. He isnt being hypocritical...he is being honest...now i am in no way a republican nor do i support them, but ron paul isnt the one we should be worried about
another state...hence why a drivers license from texas is legal everywhere else. Well DOMA says the states can choose to recognize gay marriage...NY, before they legalized gay marriage, was recognizing marriages performed in other states...doma gave them that right...it was clintons way of giving gay rights while in a republican senate...states against it did not have to choose to recognize it or legalize it, and it kept the fed gov out of it...so yes it is a protector of states rights
Um...ok so i am gay and i support you, but make sure your facts are right. DOMA does protect states rights. When clinton was in office, he had a republican senate. So passing anything in favor of gay marriage was impossible. At the same time some states were trying to pass it so they came up with DOMA. It allows states that want gay marriage legalized, to legalize it. The constitution has a thing called the "full faith and credit clause"...this says one document in a state is legal in

What's with these idiotic commenters who know noting about DOMA?
1) DOMA prohibits the government from recognizing gay marriage. This alone makes it impede on states' ability to define marriage.
2) It allows other states to ignore legal marriages from some states. This is a violation of a constitutional principle: Full Faith and Credit clause.
DOMA will burn down in the courts and it is a pity you supposed-libertarians who have a hardon for the constitution would be in favor of it.
