  • freakin awesomeee i keep watching this over and over again

  • Awesome!

  • I have been listening to this all week long, can't get enough of it

  • What effects are you using in this because I can't get the right effects for this song at all.

  • @Guitarfan1995 No Effects, Just clean guitar sound from the amp..

  • @sonofdrcross

Oh it just sounds like exactly the same tone as on the record, but I can never get the right tone. Maybe it's because I'm playing it on a guitar with humbuckers?

  • @sonofdrcross

    Also, what's the tuning?

  • Johhny Marr is a god damned genius. Well played!

  • its either in f# or capo'd on the second fret, same thing...just preference. id rather tune down because you've got more range on the neck but it takes more time

  • amazing

  • Please make a video in which you demonstrate the tuning for this one?

  • best cover i've seen

  • I just like to say how impressed i am with this. this is the most spot on cover of this song. May I ask, how did you end up figuring out the main guitar line on the chorus under the never ending reverb? :)

  • to people going on about the capo, you do need the capo, the song isnt fully barred, there are certain open notes that need to be open on 2, not neck.

  • Bloody brilliant

  • Smooth bro

  • This is really good :)

  • Nice job!!! I like your style. I´ve recorded some Smiths covers myself. Check it out, please, if you can. Take care.

  • Nicely done. This is the best cover of this song i've heard so far. What tabs did you use for it ?

  • great cover! :)

  • My God! Not even I can play this song like this. Will have to study this more closely. Nice job man!

  • All these people saying TUNE TO THIS or PLAY THIS GUITAR... wannabe's who have no idea of the fact that the player and their fingers make the sound, not the guitar

  • Nine people haven't got a stitch to wear.

  • You tore this up - nice job man!

  • the single version is about half a semitone flat from d. i used audacity to change the pitch so i could play along.

  • nicely done! :)

  • very well done!

  • Great playing mate - true to the original sound and feel. Lovely old job

  • That wos cool as fuck m8! Johnny marr would even be impressed!! ;-)

  • Spot on mate, well played!, your right Johnny tuned up to F# for the first 2 albums.

  • Great stuff, I like all your uploads

  • fucking brilliant!

  • Probably the best cover of this I've seen on Youtube so far.

  • good stuff, just keep wanking and your get the chords perfect...

  • Well done my friend. Good stuff (from an "old" bloke that's seen 'em a couple of times live)

  • fuckin nice one mate

  • can't fault it :)

  • great tone too

  • Great cover, most definitely the best I have seen about. Also thanks for the link to the smiths on guitar thing.. it was rather informative.

  • holy poop. nicely done

  • Beautiful.

  • hi is there anyone in lincoln uk who can give me guitar lessons

    ?

  • let it ring, brother.

  • by far the best sound iv heard in youtube.........tip top buddy!!

  • nice

  • one of my favorite riffs ever. Nice job man

  • Very Impressive....=D

  • thats mint mate ! really good !!!! top work

  • nice dude

  • Best version on the web period. You should have your own band sir

  • is that a squier?

  • Theres no reason to have a capo on

  • Johnny played a lot of songs with guitar tuned up to F sharp. I just used a capo instead, Trust me on this my friend..

  • Comment removed

  • @kralle333 Capo essay:

Johnny played it tuned to F sharp and started it on the 7th fret normally. It comes out in the same key when you play it on the 9th fret - the capo on 2nd is for the open note on the high E string that you can play instead of the 11th fret on the G string that is on some tabs. It has a better jangley ring/ more smithsy sound plus you can keep it ringing whilst playing on the G and B strings so it makes a nice harmony.

  • @kralle333 In an interview J. Marr once said he used to tune his guitar up a whole step to F sharp, until The Smiths got a record deal and he could afford a capo ;)

  • @kralle333 Trust the man ya prick.

  • very well played

  • Great job man!

  • this is flawless. i listen to this and fall into euphoria. love <3

  • thank you for this video, it has really helped me get this song right.

  • God i could jerk off to this

  • @Modzio666 I did.

  • That's awesome man. Nice job

  • I love your shirt.... oh yea and props lovely song.

  • amazing, loved it :)

cheers from an italian-irish kid :)

p.s. : how long have you been playing?

  • Seriously absolutely perfect. How the fuck did you do that?

  • you're reeeeallllly good! great stuff!

  • Damn you are good!!!!

    Thanks

  • What Guitar Is That

  • Superb!

  • before i die i'm gotta leran how to do that........

  • sorprendente.....donde puedo conseguir esos acordes,,,bye

  • No one was writing any guitar lines like this..completely original. Almost like Marr was writing horn parts and playing them on guitar.

Only way to get this sounding closer is electric 12. But damn fine playing.

  • Great cover, mate! A Rickenbacker would be more suitable for this song, though.

  • @TheKontosuburbian But I don't have a rickenbacker :(

  • @TheKontosuburbian Johnny used a Telecaster to record the lead line to "This Charming Man". Often mistaken for a Rickenbacker !

  • @TheKontosuburbian Why ?? Johnny played the original on a 1954 Fender Tele, a Strat would be a closer sound than a Rickenbacker.

  • @TheKontosuburbian Definitely doesn't sound like a Rick on the original.

  • @TheKontosuburbian Why would it ? The original was recorded on a 54 Tele, Johnny has toured it playing a Les Paul Custom & many other guitars. I think you have conned by the Top Of The Pops video.

A Strat is closer to a Tele than a Ric.

  • @TheKontosuburbian thats wierd because Johnny recorded it with a tele.

  • @TheKontosuburbian Marr played this on a strat, not a ric.

  • Nice hand work

  • very nice cover, gonna learn this :)

  • Nope, What has that got to do with anything?

  • @sonofdrcross oh come on have some humor

  • @Eltroim That was completely random, what did you want the lad to say?

  • @sonofdrcross hes probably referring to the homoerotic lyrics of the song, as if anyone who enjoys the song must be gay because of them.

  • @Eltroim What a weird ass comment to ask. Funny though

  • @Eltroim what a jackass comment

  • @justinwiggy oh bite me. Mind ur own life.

  • @Eltroim i'd rather not bite you thanks...not into that kind of thing gaylord

  • Well played mate

  • very nice, sir.

  • Hahaa, I've also got a white strat and a fender champ amp, also the skill to play that song. How amusing is that..

  • About as good as TCM could be played, in my opinion. Thanks for linking to the blog!

  • superb, make it look easy!

  • is 0,07 - 0,09 just a slide? i cant get the feeling right

  • tabs m8!! pls need soooo badly.. damn nice like u! u would be the answer to get it right finally pls!

  • Excellent. Best "This Charming Man" I've seen on here.

  • Wow fantastic 5 stars!

  • what is the tuning that your playing in is it standard?

  • im pretty sure i work with this guy.. if so he's in a band called The minutes.. check em out. they're no smiths though =)

  • Is anything!? :-)

  • great job my friend! what a nostalgic song this is, really enjoyed that ******, Al

  • Tabs? Pretty please???

  • damn, this is heeeeeeella good he even gots the shirt and everything!! tell me you got flowers in ur back poket

  • Comment removed

  • dyou need to alter the tuning if you're playing with capo on 2nd mate?

  • nope

  • okay thanks it just sounds a bit like it clashes when i play it to the track, maybe the tone of my guitar

  • @listenupuk You don't even need a capo I learnt it in E standard

  • will you marry me?

  • love the way you let it ring.

  • yeah i'd say this is the best cover on youtube!

  • dude i loved it , keep on doing what you do best (which is i assume the guitar) xD

  • fooking good playing mate. Smiths =r 1 of my fav bands ever

  • I LUV DIS SONG

  • Was the audio track for this video done in a single take?

  • Yep

  • The audio doesn't seem to match the video when you are playing the bar chords during the chorus. Your index finger goes on frets 5 and 7. But in the audio, you seem to be playing on frets 6 and 8.

  • Played live to song..

  • Yeah, I was playing those chords wrong. You're right. :)

  • @Pulseczar1 yeah there's usually a slight delay between sound and audio, my mate gets it when recording live. something to do with speed of light and sound or some sciency stuff like that

  • yeah this is really good, probably the best cover on youtube

  • Very nicely done! You da man!

  • Wow!

  • The best! very good, man!!!!

  • this ir really gd sounds brill :D

  • A "ROUGH STAB"?? Are you kidding? That was spot on! That was really really good, mate....

  • well done mate, bang on! nice sound on the strat too!

  • Really good - thanks for helping unravel the mystery of some of Marr's best playing!

  • Watching these sort of videos really helps you appreciate the kind of effort the artists put in and the skills they must have to compose the music in the first place. Impressive playing!

  • flawless man 5 star!

  • Johnny Marr is the best guitarist ever. Congratulations for your guitar work, man.

  • amazing

  • Excellent job!

  • keep up the good work

  • swweeeet

  • how do you omit sounds from recordings,ie guitars, vocals, ect.???

  • wow! just amazing!

  • AWESOME! the chorus is most impressive!

  • Bastard (said in envy)

  • ROUGH! what you talken about that was freaken amazing!

  • Nice job fella!!!

  • you sound great. I'll get tired of this song one day..

  • :O

    tab? please?

the tabs i've found are like a lot more simple than this, this one has loads of nice little fills in it

    and actually fits better

    5*

  • awsome!

  • That was rad. Period.

  • lush

  • Simply awesome fella...well done

  • totally fucking awesome man..you fucking nailed it dude!

did you get some tabs or sheet music?

  • Very well done mate, keep rocking!

  • FungasUK ur a gay coz u dont apreaciate the music get instrumentals then init!

  • Excellent ! ok QUESTION to all advanced guitar players. When you go to see a live band, do you pay more attention to the lead guitarist than the singer ? just curious

  • If thats a serious questions, here;s a serious answer. When I listen to tunes, I don;t listen for lyrics; it's the guitar parts I go for. I can;t recite lyrics, but I can play by here and recite tunes really quick.

  • im not an advanced guitar player, i suck actually but when i see a band live i watch the guitarist almost the whole show. i saw tool recently and was just amazed at adam jones playing it was awesome to see it so close.

  • nope the whole band ..thats why you go see a band not a solo act

  • yep lol dusn tevery gutarist

  • Most (but not all) guitarists just focus on guitar and the guitar parts. They don't pay much attention to the lyrics at all. To test this, just ask a guitarist to play from a certain part of a song using the lyrics as a reference point. They can also get confused as to where in the song they are during rehearsals despite the verse and chorus lyrics not repeating themselves at all throughout the song. . This is not meant as a criticism, a lot of musicians tend to focus on just their part.

  • What a perfect representation. Thanks!

I agree with some posters below. Learn to play it by ear bar by bar. It will help your ears, your memory and technique far more than any tab can. Most of the tabs I've used were not as accurate as the versions I learned by ear.

  • Top Quality. I need to learn this to play with my covers band and if I get anywhere near it as well as this I'll be more than happy. Now how do I slow this stuff down...? :-)

  • sorry to spam but check out my version:D obviously no where near as good as this but if you have the time please take a look :)

    thankyou:D

  • Now this more like it...

  • damn how did Marr come up with that shit? Amazing....

  • awesome job! :D

  • Thanks for the advice. i don't have a tele or ric

  • this video motivated me to try again to learn this song. thank you

  • whitch guitar is this ?:)

  • It's only when you hear others attempt to play Smiths songs that you realise just how talented a guitarist Marr was/is. You did a great job by the way, thanks for showing us how it's done.

  • nice playing i like it :) can i get a tab of this from you? :) i just subscribed to you videos :)

  • amazing , a very hard job congratulations, GREAT! MAN

  • where can i find a good tab of this?

  • thats real good playing

  • thats a pretty good cover man, keep it up! i like it

  • amazing cover 5 star :)

  • i dont't know that tab that you said was accurate doesn't sound anything like this. its just the third section where you go down to the fifth fret that i cannot get down

  • Are you playing through the Fender Champion 600 in the background for this song?
