Also there is no real sense of what universe we are watching as the film borrows so much , especially repetitious dialogue, from the previous Superman films, yet also has poor continuity with those films. You are left wondering what Superman universe we are in. Superman returns is left with no clear identity. The constant quoting from the first 2 movies is just the worst. Can't they write their own script?

Everything- from the choice of actors to the way superman falls off the island in the ocean was intentional. That's why there's no big fight scene or building collapses. This film is a masterpiece. I understand that a lot of people felt this movie wasn't what they wanted it to be. But to me it was a fitting tribute to the Reeve Superman series, and provided much needed closure to a group of movies that started brilliantly, but had fallen flat on its face by the end (Nuclear man, anyone?).
Routh did a wonderful impression of Christopher Reeve playing Superman, but in the end it was a repeat of another actor's performance.
I think all these directors are ruining the Superman franchise by changing out these actors for Supes every time they put a new spin on the movie. Brandon Routh was an excellent choice in my opinion. Not only because of his striking resemblance to Christopher Reeve, but his portrayal was in keeping the pure, honest, and compassionate hero that is the essence of Superman "Truth, Justice, and the AMERICAN way." Superman returns was a great attempt at a bad concept. I LOVED Brandon Routh and Kevin Spacey, but Kate Bosworth should never have been Lois Lane, and the kid didn't need to happen. The concept, starting as a sequel from 2, or a new number 3, however you want to word it, was just a strange idea. I'm definitely looking forward to the reboot, coming next year. Just a shame that bringing back Routh and Spacey would be too confusing. Let's hope the new cast can pull it off. :)

Nicely done. I thought Brandon Routh did a wonderful job. The effects were great. I liked that the story wasn't just all about "look what he can do", and explosions and super villains, but concentrated more on who Superman is as a person, and the torture a being like him might feel and experience.

I understand that a lot of people felt this movie wasn't what they wanted it to be. But to me it was a fitting tribute to the Reeve Superman series, and provided much needed closure to a group of movies that started brilliantly, but had fallen flat on its face by the end (Nuclear man, anyone?).
Routh did a wonderful impression of Christopher Reeve playing Superman, but in the end it was a repeat of another actor's performance.

I think all these directors are ruining the Superman franchise by changing out these actors for Supes every time they put a new spin on the movie. Brandon Routh was an excellent choice in my opinion. Not only because of his striking resemblance to Christopher Reeve, but his portrayal was in keeping the pure, honest, and compassionate hero that is the essence of Superman "Truth, Justice, and the AMERICAN way." Stop F@#%^ing up a good thing!

Superman returns was a great attempt at a bad concept. I LOVED Brandon Routh and Kevin Spacey, but Kate Bosworth should never have been Lois Lane, and the kid didn't need to happen. The concept, starting as a sequel from 2, or a new number 3, however you want to word it, was just a strange idea. I'm definitely looking forward to the reboot, coming next year. Just a shame that bringing back Routh and Spacey would be too confusing. Let's hope the new cast can pull it off. :)

All that it needed was more length, more backstory and a fierce nemesis (Lex is a human afterall) - Perhaps Doomsday?

@cyberjon67 I agree. Really enjoyed this film. I love how the film was about his questioning of his humanity and belonging, and how he couldn't see til the end how "human" he actually was. Nicely done. I thought Brandon Routh did a wonderful job. The effects were great. I liked that the story wasn't just all about "look what he can do", and explosions and super villains, but concentrated more on who Superman is as a person, and the torture a being like him might feel and experience.

@cyberjon67 I'm a huge Superman fan, but this movie had so many flaws. Like how it is a direct sequel to the second Donner Superman film, yet this film has yet another real estate scheme by Luthor. Or how both Clark and Superman are gone for a whole 5 years, and when they both return at the same time, people STILL don't realize his secret.
Many of the scenes were too heavy-handed. They could have handled a few of the scenes with more humor instead of every single one having dramatic tension.
