Ace isn't even Ace anymore, Thayer may not be as good as Ace was in his prime but he is far better right now. @kissed61 - agree...Tommy is a fantastic human being, a killer guitarist, but he is NOT Ace...Tommy should leave more of Ace's style out, and incorporate more Jeff Beck as Ace did, some Keith Richards, some Duane Allman, maybe even a bit of Mark Knoffler (Dire Straits) - maybe then he can get to Ace's level. Until then, Tommy is a cool guy, but he is NOT Ace.

@DraVenRa66 ace didnt influence people because of his guitar playing but more for his character. the whole space ace theme. ace's licks and note selection are simple and he ran out of ideas really quick. it has nothing to do with shredding. and ace barley used ANY blues. he used alot of minor pentatonic scales and basically did the same solo every song. jimmy page slash and eric clapton are ones who influence on skill..not ace

My point is, obviously he wasn't the most talented guitar player, no one is, but he still influenced SO many generations of Guitarist.

Eric Singer was great in Kiss back in the early 90s without the make up, those were his true Kiss days, i find it hard to believe that he would agree to be in the Peter Criss make up, i hear that Gene ask Bruce Kulick to come back to the band and wear the Ace Frehley make up, but he said no out of respect for Ace, fans and himself, so they got Tommy. but money talks so we have kiss as we see today, im sure Tommy and Eric are not getting much money but Gene and Paul are cashing in like always.
It's not a marketing ploy. 99% percent of average fans want to see the four original characters they love. Not some new weird makeup. As far as tommy copying Ace? He doesnt. He doesnt use ac'es pickups or ace's amp. He puts his own stamp on everything. @kiss2211 Ace's new album growls pretty good. And holy CRAP can he make it growl live! One of the most impressive displays of guitar playing I have ever seen with my own two eyes at a live show. I was blown away. Both the new Ace and KISS albums are great. KISS hasn't sounded this good in 25 years. The album sounds like a cross between 'Dressed To Kill' and 'Asylum' to me and I really enjoy it. Took me a bit to get over the whole Tommy/Eric blasphemy thing, but whatever, it works.

Exactly, Tommy Thayer is a great guitarist, but just because Paul and Gene put him in Ace's makeup and costume, doesn't mean that everything Ace did was for nothing. Think about it, long before "Sonic Boom" all Tommy did was play ACE'S guitar parts.

Seems to me (I could be wrong) that Gene wants Tommy to be almost KISS's version of Matthew Trippe. Matt was supposedly in Motley Crue for 1-2 years while Nikki Sixx was in rehab the first time, and some think that it's Matt, not Nikki, in the "Smokin' in the Boys Room" video.
This applies to Tommy in the way that Gene might say "I want you to be the new Ace", and Tommy concentrates so hard he forgets his own name.

@kissed61 - agree...Tommy is a fantastic human being, a killer guitarist, but he is NOT Ace...Tommy should leave more of Ace's style out, and incorporate more Jeff Beck as Ace did, some Keith Richards, some Duane Allman, maybe even a bit of Mark Knoffler (Dire Straits) - maybe then he can get to Ace's level. Until then, Tommy is a cool guy, but he is NOT Ace.

@DraVenRa66 ace didnt influence people because of his guitar playing but more for his character. the whole space ace theme. ace's licks and note selection are simple and he ran out of ideas really quick. it has nothing to do with shredding. and ace barley used ANY blues. he used alot of minor pentatonic scales and basically did the same solo every song. jimmy page slash and eric clapton are ones who influence on skill..not ace

@mammo8369 Yes I know, I was at 4 of the Reunion Tour shows. Tommy is the one that had to teach Ace his parts again. If it wasn't for Tommy, Ace would have bombed completely. What do you expect? They had not played all those songs like that, night after night in over 15 years, like Gene and Paul had.

@mammo8369 Well Ace usually only played the songs he had Writing credit for, whether it be co, or full. In comparison to a whole KISS set list... thats not many at all!! On KISSOLOGY you can even hear why ace had to have help relearning the riffs. He had strayed so long from the originals, that he didn't quite play them right. Anyways... I'm done arguing. My point is, obviously he wasn't the most talented guitar player, no one is, but he still influenced SO many generations of Guitarist.

@DraVenRa66 he did influence people, not by his playing, but by his stage presence, showman ship and space man persona. if you watch kissology volume 3/reunion tour and PC tour clips, all the mistakes ace makes are on songs he played for 40 years. ace just doesnt try, he has other priorities ahead of his fans and kiss.

@DraVenRa66 bruce and tommy hit wrong notes. all player do. but ace was sloppy because he admitted he never practiced much, never tried to improve, and all those years of drugs and booze effected his motor functions making his fingers even more sloppy. shame really. he was creative in the early 70's, and even though his playing was simple, it actually suited the songs. firehouse, deuce, black diamond ect... all those solos gave the songs a certain character. he just couldnt do it for long

by the way people, i got to meet Kiss back in 2000 on that "Farewell Tour" Paul was a nice guy but it was the same old " we would not be here without the fans" line that he always uses, Gene was a total stuck up jerk, Peter Criss was kinda cool, but Ace made jokes, picked on me, talked to me like a friend, he never acted like he thought he was any different or better than us fans, and he was the one that really cared about the fans the most, Gene and Paul care more about your money

Eric Singer was great in Kiss back in the early 90s without the make up, those were his true Kiss days, i find it hard to believe that he would agree to be in the Peter Criss make up, i hear that Gene ask Bruce Kulick to come back to the band and wear the Ace Frehley make up, but he said no out of respect for Ace, fans and himself, so they got Tommy. but money talks so we have kiss as we see today, im sure Tommy and Eric are not getting much money but Gene and Paul are cashing in like always.

It's not a marketing ploy. 99% percent of average fans want to see the four original characters they love. Not some new weird makeup. As far as tommy copying Ace? He doesnt. He doesnt use ac'es pickups or ace's amp. He puts his own stamp on everything. But when it comes to playing classic KISS he plays it note for note because thats how its supposed to be played morons not unrecognizable.

Its not that hes copying Ace,its gene and pauls writing style,they write classic Kiss style songs so it sounds like classic Kiss with Ace. Tommy adds a more harder edge to it tho. Like listen to Dr Love with Tommy. Sounds Different than with Ace. Ace never made his guitar growl as hard as i heard Tommy's growl on Sonic Boom.

@kiss2211 Ace's new album growls pretty good. And holy CRAP can he make it growl live! One of the most impressive displays of guitar playing I have ever seen with my own two eyes at a live show. I was blown away. Both the new Ace and KISS albums are great. KISS hasn't sounded this good in 25 years. The album sounds like a cross between 'Dressed To Kill' and 'Asylum' to me and I really enjoy it. Took me a bit to get over the whole Tommy/Eric blasphemy thing, but whatever, it works.

Exactly, Tommy Thayer is a great guitarist, but just because Paul and Gene put him in Ace's makeup and costume, doesn't mean that everything Ace did was for nothing. Think about it, long before "Sonic Boom" all Tommy did was play ACE'S guitar parts.

1. What kind of person does it take to wear Michael Jordan's jersey and number claiming to fans they are Jordan? Tommy said "I am the spaceman" - no youre not.

Seems to me (I could be wrong) that Gene wants Tommy to be almost KISS's version of Matthew Trippe. Matt was supposedly in Motley Crue for 1-2 years while Nikki Sixx was in rehab the first time, and some think that it's Matt, not Nikki, in the "Smokin' in the Boys Room" video.
This applies to Tommy in the way that Gene might say "I want you to be the new Ace", and Tommy concentrates so hard he forgets his own name.

Exactley, but Tommy is only hated because he is too much like Ace. And even though he doesn't try to, he comes off to some people as a copier. He is a good guitar player, but myslef and other fans think Ace should still have his spot as lead guitarist.
None the less, Tommy is a good guitar player and lead guitarist.
