@ShowgunSam it's not auto tune. auto tune wasnt invented until 1997. If Geddy is using pitch correction its through something analog. He doesn't need it though, for the past 38 years his voice has rarely failed him. I haven't been to one rush concert where his voice wasn't perfect.
Wow, I never realized how heavily auto-tuned the vocal track was for this song. Starting at "for the spirit" starting at 1:06 and then it gets HEAVY in the chorus. Hahaha, oh well, Geddy's still a beast.
Yes to Primarybs, I had to explain on the force ten video, that some of the clips during the dvd were cut from another night...it's overture where alex's guitar keep's switching from black to white (while he's still playing), you can tell which clip the music is from and the one edited in from another night. And that the jakchammer in force ten dvd and cd maybe differen't because there from different shows, closer to the heart I think is different on the cd to dvd...r video :)
Also, DavidRourke15, Alex its playing a Hentor "Sportscaster". It is a Frankenstein guitar with a custom neck by a company in Canada. It is fitted with EMG active pickups. There are several interviews out there where he tasks about making these guitars kinda as a joke.
All this tall about Auto Tune....First,Geddy its violently opposed to anyone screwing with his voice. Listen to interviews with him on the subject. Second, the ASOF cd and the DVD material were culled from different shows. Two London shows and one or two Jersey shows at the Meadowlands. I would think the different takes would account for the different sounds. They played with this liberally on the dvd. Watch, I think, La Villa. Alex's guitars change constantly during the song.
@CircusEnvy23 He is using a wal bass I love that bass. Geddy has a great taste in basses. First as his Fender Jazz, but that isn't my thing as much. Then he used a Rickenbacker(Sexy), Then he used this bass the wal bass, and now he is using his custom Fender Jazz, with a really nice neck. They also make a Squier one.
@finandquinn lol cool thanks, don't forget his steinberger from grace under pressure!!! I know lots don't really like them but I've owned one and these basses are beautiful in they're own way, just like rush!!
Just my opinion, but to me this is when Rush was "on the top of their game" Actually from the late 70's to the late 80's was the "Golden Age" of Rush!!
@SSShops Agreed, 2112 to Moving Pictures is when I personally feel Rush was at their greatest, but I always will have a heart for their more matured album "Hold Your Fire"
I wish more rush fans like that album, it has such a defined sound to it. I always urge any fans I know to give it a try, you may have to listen to the song more then once to get it, but it is truly one of they're greatest pieces, just somewhat misunderstood.

If I may speak for him, what Vectron12 is saying is that they used Auto-Tune on Ged's vocal many years later when remastering the original source tape to use for the DVD release. And he may be right (see my reply today). I'll compare this performance with my old VHS version and report back.
As for using it live these days, you're probably right. Ged's voice is pretty ragged now & doesn't sound like it's being A-T'd. It's so bad sometimes *cringe* that I almost wish it was. :-P
Well, it appears I may owe you an apology. I'll have to dig up my old VHS version & compare the two. The original 80s perfs couldn't have used A-T, of course.
It's been my understanding that A-T is only used in real time (during the performance), but I've never had a reason to check on that.
I do know pitch correction (pre-A-T) has been used for decades. In the mid-80s, I remember Joe Elliott & Christine McVie railing against untalented singers using it.
@biloxi1314 I'm pretty sure that bass sound you hear might be triggers Alex is stepping on just as he triggers some of the synth sounds in Tom Sawyer. Lifeson does more out there than we think.
Ignore the responses about "triggers" and "synths" you're getting. Alex is playing (analog) Taurus bass pedals, as he has since the mid-70s. Geddy also plays them from time to time. They play them live and also in the studio. Look 'em up on Wikipedia if you're interested.
@Mrcharlied98 That was the studio assholes. That was done for the DVD remaster. If I ever get my hands on a original copy of the CD with this song on it....I'll get the DVD side-by-side and pull 'The Spirit of Radio' off of the CD and put it over the video audio. (But I will remaster the audio a bit so that it sounds proper.) This could take a long time to accompolish...Hmm, maybe I could have it done in about bit over a month.
@theDurangoman Confirmed. I'm the one who clicked "dislike" for the video, and I voted for Obama. While I don't apologize for voting for Obama, I can say that me clicking the "dislike" button was a grievous mistake. My finger slipped while trying to click the "like" button. Don't worry through, when I realized the great atrocity I had just committed I immediately threw myself down my stairway as punishment. I've got a concussion now, but who gives a sh*t?! Rush rules!
@theDurangoman What does one have to do with the other you fucking no-nothing pussy. Leave politics out of the music boards you knobgobbler, your Mom should have swallowed that night she did the whole Football team although I think it was the Tuba Player who is your daddy.

Yeah; when we go to a Rush Show, we go to see perfection. We don't shell out money to hear a sloppy version of a 2-hit band. We want three hours of pitch and note-for-note live, tangible, awesome.
I remember having this tape when I was 7 or 8, and it was the only time I saw what Rush looked like. It is one of the standards I hold music to today, and it is my favorite live album.
I played this VHS so many times that it actually wore out! My parents were not happy. ^_^
I remember hearing it was a cold. that's far more resonably understanding than the flu lawl. He sounds conjested(?). Man, I love this band. Greatest musicianship EVER!!! RUSH FTW!
Actually, I can imagine Geddy wanting to play enough that he'd suffer through it. There's a version of Tom Sawyer that I used to have where he missed part of a verse and coughed straight into the microphone - he has played while sick before.
okay so throughout the whole song geddy's voice sounds like its going through a vocoder or something?...could it be the video quality or is it actually something to do with the sound setup he has going
this is such an upbeat song. When I saw this live, I had tingles running through me. these guys are amazing live. I never thought I'd have the chance to see them live, but when I did...it was amazing like no other. And I've met Alex twice!
evytime see the rush...is like never so much happyiness...so just watch to see them make ...the aw...musicians trully for the musician mans...ver goiod

There's a version of Tom Sawyer that I used to have where he missed part of a verse and coughed straight into the microphone - he has played while sick before.

if he allegedly had the flu he would not be able to perform a full concert without vomiting haha

okay so throughout the whole song geddy's voice sounds like its going through a vocoder or something?...could it be the video quality or is it actually something to do with the sound setup he has going

I think he had the flu when they recorded this

this is such an upbeat song. When I saw this live, I had tingles running through me. these guys are amazing live. I never thought I'd have the chance to see them live, but when I did...it was amazing like no other. And I've met Alex twice!
