  • 0:35 edition fail

  • @ShowgunSam it's not auto tune. auto tune wasnt invented until 1997. If Geddy is using pitch correction its through something analog. He doesn't need it though, for the past 38 years his voice has rarely failed him. I haven't been to one rush concert where his voice wasn't perfect.

  • Wow, I never realized how heavily auto-tuned the vocal track was for this song. Starting at "for the spirit" starting at 1:06 and then it gets HEAVY in the chorus. Hahaha, oh well, Geddy's still a beast.

  • what song came after this one was it the big money

  • Yes to Primarybs, I had to explain on the force ten video, that some of the clips during the dvd were cut from another night...it's overture where alex's guitar keep's switching from black to white (while he's still playing), you can tell which clip the music is from and the one edited in from another night. And that the jakchammer in force ten dvd and cd maybe differen't because there from different shows, closer to the heart I think is different on the cd to dvd...r video :)

  • Also, DavidRourke15, Alex its playing a Hentor "Sportscaster". It is a Frankenstein guitar with a custom neck by a company in Canada. It is fitted with EMG active pickups. There are several interviews out there where he tasks about making these guitars kinda as a joke.

  • All this tall about Auto Tune....First,Geddy its violently opposed to anyone screwing with his voice. Listen to interviews with him on the subject. Second, the ASOF cd and the DVD material were culled from different shows. Two London shows and one or two Jersey shows at the Meadowlands. I would think the different takes would account for the different sounds. They played with this liberally on the dvd. Watch, I think, La Villa. Alex's guitars change constantly during the song.

  • Phenomenal! This reminds me why it's good to be alive.

  • best band ever no matter what anyone says

  • when alex makes those faces during the solo he looks like jeff daniels

  • Fuck Joey, Lars and Dave Lombardo I wanna be like Neil Peart

  • @aspasiz joey who?

  • @Aheavysmoker Joey Jordison

  • Geddy has tight pants.

  • One of the few greatest true bands.

  • Geddy should bring out the Wal once 'n a while nowadays

  • what kind of bass is he using?

    That punchy tone, wow!

  • @CircusEnvy23 He is using a wal bass I love that bass. Geddy has a great taste in basses. First as his Fender Jazz, but that isn't my thing as much. Then he used a Rickenbacker(Sexy), Then he used this bass the wal bass, and now he is using his custom Fender Jazz, with a really nice neck. They also make a Squier one.

  • @finandquinn lol cool thanks, don't forget his steinberger from grace under pressure!!! I know lots don't really like them but I've owned one and these basses are beautiful in they're own way, just like rush!!

    Cheers :)

  • Just my opinion, but to me this is when Rush was "on the top of their game" Actually from the late 70's to the late 80's was the "Golden Age" of Rush!!

  • @SSShops Agreed, 2112 to Moving Pictures is when I personally feel Rush was at their greatest, but I always will have a heart for their more matured album "Hold Your Fire"

I wish more rush fans like that album, it has such a defined sound to it. I always urge any fans I know to give it a try, you may have to listen to the song more then once to get it, but it is truly one of they're greatest pieces, just somewhat misunderstood.

Do as you wish and peace :)

  • @CircusEnvy23 Despite being a fan from Fly By Night onward, for me the magical period is from Hold Your Fire to Test For Echo with Roll The Bones, Counterparts, and Presto in there. This period came following their most popular era and to me the maturity displayed by these fellas to continue on would help them in their most recent efforts following the tragedies. All told, the entire catologe makes them an epic band beyond comparison.

  • @Triplecenturies MORE PEOPLE NEED YOUR TASTES!!!!

I just like listening to rush and watching them act like a musical chameleon, changing in the ages. To me bands that do this are always the most interesting

Carry on your passion, my friend... someday people will see the greatness of Rush...or not, either way they get stronger as a band

  • @Triplecenturies Your period is the area i dislike the most but hey thats why they have lasted, 2112 to Moving pictures for me fella, can ever get away from it supurb....

  • See them live, and you wont accuse them of using Auto-tune-machines or that sort of BS ever again.

  • @Cerrani91

If I may speak for him, what Vectron12 is saying is that they used Auto-Tune on Ged's vocal many years later when remastering the original source tape to use for the DVD release. And he may be right (see my reply today). I'll compare this performance with my old VHS version and report back.

As for using it live these days, you're probably right. Ged's voice is pretty ragged now & doesn't sound like it's being A-T'd. It's so bad sometimes *cringe* that I almost wish it was. :-P

  • it's true i can also hear bass while Geddy lee it's waving his hands

  • i think this was on a guitar hero game because i remember getting pissed when i couldnt beat it

  • i really wish they didnt autotune geddy for this or at least didnt do such a shitty job with it

  • Comment removed

  • @Ken5244 you can clearly hear it

it was only done for the dvd release

and if thats not enough here's the isolated vocal track for this video

    watch?v=kDEfbjNiXBY

also go to 1:25 and listen to geddy. ive never heard him sound more robotic than that

  • @vectron12

Well, it appears I may owe you an apology. I'll have to dig up my old VHS version & compare the two. The original 80s perfs couldn't have used A-T, of course.

It's been my understanding that A-T is only used in real time (during the performance), but I've never had a reason to check on that.

I do know pitch correction (pre-A-T) has been used for decades. In the mid-80s, I remember Joe Elliott & Christine McVie railing against untalented singers using it.

    Will get back to you.

  • @Ken5244 thats alright

i only noticed because i found that recording anyways. if i didnt i never would have thought they did anything to his voice

  • @Ken5244 wot

  • @imjustgav

Not sure what you're asking me, but the conversation between vectron12 and I is about Auto-Tune, if that's what you're referring to.

  • why do i hear bass when geddy's hands are in the air???

  • @biloxi1314 because he is god

  • @biloxi1314 Bass pedals

  • @biloxi1314 Triggers, Synths, Bass Pedals, Endless possibilities. It's rush, they can pull this kind of stuff off

  • @biloxi1314 I'm pretty sure that bass sound you hear might be triggers Alex is stepping on just as he triggers some of the synth sounds in Tom Sawyer. Lifeson does more out there than we think.

  • @biloxi1314

Ignore the responses about "triggers" and "synths" you're getting. Alex is playing (analog) Taurus bass pedals, as he has since the mid-70s. Geddy also plays them from time to time. They play them live and also in the studio. Look 'em up on Wikipedia if you're interested.

  • At 1:27-1:35 it sounds like Geddy Lee is using auto tune!

  • @Mrcharlied98 That was the studio assholes. That was done for the DVD remaster. If I ever get my hands on a original copy of the CD with this song on it....I'll get the DVD side-by-side and pull 'The Spirit of Radio' off of the CD and put it over the video audio. (But I will remaster the audio a bit so that it sounds proper.) This could take a long time to accompolish...Hmm, maybe I could have it done in about bit over a month.

  • @Mrcharlied98 Auto-Tune didn't exist yet during this tour dopey.

  • rush is awsome:D

  • :15 Geddy: "Eh. no big deal..."

  • Its unfortunate how now-a-days, if you let the music on the radio make your morning mood, you'll end up being pissed off all morning.

  • one dislike is victim to glittering prizes and endless compromises.

  • Incredible how much sound he can get out of four strings...

  • Oh fuck Jaan Werner, that Jagoff! Fuck Rocking Stone!!! Fuck the Lot of them.,,, I feel better now.

  • Geddy's bass sounds so sick!! hell ya

  • lol sick ride pattern neil :35

  • BEST BAND EVER!!!!!!!!!

  • If you vote dislike for this song/vid you are just a damn Obama voter

  • @theDurangoman Ha ! +5 just for making me laugh ! Absolutely dead on !

  • @theDurangoman Confirmed. I'm the one who clicked "dislike" for the video, and I voted for Obama. While I don't apologize for voting for Obama, I can say that me clicking the "dislike" button was a grievous mistake. My finger slipped while trying to click the "like" button. Don't worry through, when I realized the great atrocity I had just committed I immediately threw myself down my stairway as punishment. I've got a concussion now, but who gives a sh*t?! Rush rules!

  • @theDurangoman What does one have to do with the other you fucking no-nothing pussy. Leave politics out of the music boards you knobgobbler, your Mom should have swallowed that night she did the whole Football team although I think it was the Tuba Player who is your daddy.

Is damn the best you can come up with????

  • @RICH12DAY34

While I agree that political comments in non-political threads are generally uncalled for, your filthy, X-rated reply was equally uncalled for. Sheesh, man, why don't you delete it and re-post? You can get your point across without resorting to locker room language. It kinda tarnishes this otherwise great song/video when people have to read that.

The same goes for the comment from romansmk. C'mon, you guys can do better.

  • rock and roll hall of Fame? WTF is wrong with Rolling Stone Mag??? How can any entity deny that this band should not be included in this (commercial) hall of fame?

  • \m/ RUSH \m/ BEST BAND EVER!!!!

  • I think that this is one of the best versions of this song ever!

  • You just gotta love these three guys.

  • HOLY SHIT Geddy's bass sounds eargasmic, Rush definetly in the top 3 rock bands ever

  • @DavidRourke15 could be a Kramer

  • rock incombustible!!!!

  • @DavidRourke15 A Signature, the firm went bust a while back IIRC

  • @TOSportsfan1990 some people like crap. That concert was epic.

  • @MrMonkeyCommander i sure liked it

  • neil peart is hands down the best drummer to ever pick up sticks!!

The Rev from Avenged Sevenfold is a very close second

  • @71rdf What about Portnoy??

  • @elothras the rev, neil peart and mike portnoy. best 3 ever.

  • @ankeyte you forgot Keith Moon !

  • @ankeyte The Rev? No.

  • @MaxtheMetalhead Yes.lol

  • @ankeyte There are thousands of drummers that are better than him. It seems that people are saying that about him because he just died.

  • @MaxtheMetalhead he's been my favorite since 2005 so that's not my excuse.

  • @ankeyte Favorites don't always mean the greatest.

  • @MaxtheMetalhead true. one of the greatest in my eyes at least.

  • @ankeyte Then keep looking.

  • Autotune on vocals?

  • @JamesKaivinkone

Quite obvious here and there, "invisible AIRWAVES", "For the spirit", and so forth

I wonder though, if it's for the "effect", was it added in the DVD remaster, or processed immediately on the show. Since he really can sing without it, don't see why he'd have to use it here

  • @Kumagoro314

Wrong. The shows for this DVD were recorded during the 1986 and 1988 tours. Auto-Tune didn't exist until a decade later in 1997.

So much for your comment, "quite obvious here & there ...."

  • That guitar solo got me aroused

  • Apparently this video was shot in the 80's. I know, it's hard to tell, but it's true! :D

  • This time it dosent suck so bad papa

  • @SuperMrMalibog Bring that piece of crap up from the basement

  • had the privilege of seeing these guys more than once, their commitment to a perfect show, other bands they dont even sound tight at all, practice, pratice, and they can do that at the same time have fun

alex is goofy in concerts, he should get his own show

  • 3:41

  • i can't believe i am writing this i grew up listening to jimi hendrix, cream, james gang and i am sure i left out others, but RUSH has got to be the greatest power trio to ever play rock and roll!!!

  • I found I enjoyed their Rio tour dvd that was being played on tv about a year ago...never cared for them before...guess I was a closet Rush fan... ;)

  • YAAAA!

  • Check out Lifeson at 2:08...?Is he winding up Peart

  • GO rush!!!

  • I'm happy to see more teens listening to this then the R.A.P retards attempt poetry, literally. When you listen to rap, (its hard not to throw up) you can here them rhyming and making up crap. This is cleary better :P

  • @ClubPenguinMovies123 i'm 15, Rush is my favourite band, but i enjoy a lot of rap too. the shit that's popular is killing the industry and giving rap a bad name. i hate Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and all that shit. and most popular rappers dont make up shit, they have someone do it for them. hope i cleared up a bit for ya :)

  • These guys are incredibly dorky, but I love their music.

  • Uhhhhh.........That Kinda Rocked

  • what type of bass is he using?

  • @bllpg9 its a Wal.

  • love it

  • I'm a 15 year old from Las Vegas, And it pisses me off that everyone here is obsessed with rap. I wish people would listen to their ears instead of MTV! Rush is one of the most incredible bands to ever walk the earth!

  • i love this songs guitar into

  • he looks cooler with glasses

  • LOL, hes cool to begin with, Ahaha

  • true dat

  • oh yea, and next to cozy powel.........peart is the best drummer in history

  • whats great about this band, theyre actually BETTER live now!

  • rush and the 3some lineup of motorhead, best trios ever

  • Rush was great then, Rush is still great now.

From Finding My Way, to Spirit of Radio, to Workin' Them Angles I love Rush!

  • which one is the one where he says spirit of baseball?

  • BEST trio EVER! With proper permise from The POLICE, of course...

  • Rush, thanks for being prog. enough to break the stereotype! we love you

  • @ledzepfloyd28 ya i cant stand stings voice. i kind of like their drummer's styler tho

  • geddy was an awesome musician then, and still is amazing

  • geddy's voice is so beautiful in this song! 4:18 a few processors.....

  • i absolutely agree. THis and closer to the heart really define the greatness of Lee's voice

  • what's that part at the end with the cartoons all about??

  • what venue is this at?

  • NEC Birmingham Exhibition Centre in England

  • rush is definitely one of the greatest rock bands in the world :)

  • Up on your way is the open road,Z32 Twin Turbo, rasping the sounds of horsepower and rock and roll, where is my Barchetta?

  • @pyrogod67 no man, they are the best

  • @pyrogod67 One of the? More like THE!

  • @pyrogod67 and the solar federation

  • should have kept steinberger, that thing was so bright and poppy on highs. sounded sick

  • During the solo, Alex seems to have a face that says: "How am I doing this? Oh yeah, because I'm awesome."

  • I love that quote!!!

  • @DaveMcNad thats so ture....but he has the right to brag cause he's amazing!

  • I'm not much of a Rush fan, but this is such a cool song!

  • a show of hands----- rock on ghost rider

  • Yeah; when we go to a Rush Show, we go to see perfection. We don't shell out money to hear a sloppy version of a 2-hit band. We want three hours of pitch and note-for-note live, tangible, awesome.

I remember having this tape when I was 7 or 8, and it was the only time I saw what Rush looked like. It is one of the standards I hold music to today, and it is my favorite live album.

I played this VHS so many times that it actually wore out! My parents were not happy. ^_^

  • great song

  • I remember hearing it was a cold. that's far more resonably understanding than the flu lawl. He sounds conjested(?). Man, I love this band. Greatest musicianship EVER!!! RUSH FTW!

  • Actually, I can imagine Geddy wanting to play enough that he'd suffer through it. There's a version of Tom Sawyer that I used to have where he missed part of a verse and coughed straight into the microphone - he has played while sick before.

  • if he allegedly had the flu he would not be able to perform a full concert without vomiting haha

  • okay so throughout the whole song geddy's voice sounds like its going through a vocoder or something?...could it be the video quality or is it actually something to do with the sound setup he has going

  • I think he had the flu when they recorded this

  • this is such an upbeat song. When I saw this live, I had tingles running through me. these guys are amazing live. I never thought I'd have the chance to see them live, but when I did...it was amazing like no other. And I've met Alex twice!

  • At 2:26 was that.........Caramelldansen!!!!????

  • Rush are a national treasure but whats with is with the cartoon at the end? "Hey kid, come on!", thats fucked!

  • It's the intro to Tom Sawyer

  • where??

  • the cartoon at the end of the vid. it's the intro to Tom Sawyer.

  • His voice in the chorus is unreal.. sounds like a vocoder or something, but it's all him

  • great song but huge cock up at lifesons part at 4:42

  • He made a face of "dammit!"

  • yea thats acctualy the only time ive seen any of them mess up, and ive seen them live 2 times

  • I love how they mess with each other while they're playing lol.

  • this song ALWAYS sounds incredible live, why is that?

  • because it RUSH!!!!!

  • Dam right good attidute

  • lol thanks man best band in the world.hey iv seen ur drum covers their great neil peart=best ever!!!

  • CAUSE IYS A FUCKING GREAT SONG

  • Yes it does. This is actually my fave live version
