to echo my earlier thoughts please note the High Numbers failed to add Slim as a writer which excluded him from any royalties. I think the boys could've given him some credit. Especially when black music at the time was being high jacked by white moguls who were only interested in making cash for themselves. Record execs etc (not the artists doing the cover as some dumb ass thought - see below!)
Glad you like the selection...................plenty more on the way.
if not for some of those other bands who "ripped" this music, I am glad they did, because otherwise I would not have found this man's music
besides, you know what they say....imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. And it's not imitation, really, but influence. You may not like what others did with his music, or the music that was inspired by this, but that IS the legacy. Such is the stuff of music, literature, and all other art forms.
in response to your comment please nore the following;
I said the High Numbers pinched his song not ripped it.......................I didn't say I don't like it. In actual fact Iove the High Numbers tune and yes imitation is the sincerest from of flattery. I posted this tune for my pleasure and the pleasure of others. The reason I made reference to the High Numbers 'cover' is to let those who didn't know an interesting fact about the song. I hope this is clear.
everyone ripper songs.. who cares! their all good.. dylan's first album was all ripped. he didn't write a song on it! elvis got his style from arthur big boy Ccudup and everyone else did to. so what the people who did the song next suck? lol the only bad thing is that these old folk/blues players didn't get a dime sitting on a pouch drunk singing form the soul after a long day in the fields. all in all sleepy john estes blew me away being blind and all. you can really feel his shit.
The reason? some are really good and some are horrible, as you know it's happening now, some are really good and some are not, some of the cover songs you hear now are really good, just like the 60's 70s, etc.
I agree with you entirely. Musiccomes from sorrow as well as happiness, music reflects the soul, the inner being. Music allows people to express themselves it's a window of emotions.
Back for more - you've got some niiiice stuff. Speaking of redo's - John Mayall did a nice version of this. Speakin' of Hank Williams - There's a real close relationship between that early rural country, bluegrass and blues. It seemed to come from the same heart, regardless of race. Those early guys sure shared the sound. Love it! Thanks!
Slim Harpo along with Willie Dixon was one of The Major influences to the early Rock Scene..from The Beatles,Stones & Kinks & Later Deep Purple & Led Zepplin..He Was One of the Major Blues Artist Of The '50's & 60's..and comparing him to the likes of Townes van Zandt & Dylan is an insult to the man's legacy!
hank williams pretty much started the folk and do you know who townes van zandt is? johnny cash? dylan? man do your homework songs are re-done all the time
i don't care what your interested in and i'm using my free speech now. i get a kick out of you losers who find a song from early 50's and become blow away when you hear a 60's band do it and criticize them for it..
probably cos there were no writing credits to Slim. I think the boys could've given him some credit. Especially when black music at the time was being high jacked by white moguls who were only interested in making cash for themselves. Record execs etc
Glad you like the selection...................plenty more on the way.
dude.. jim morriosn did a few of his song.. so did the stones and beatles.. umm so are they all white moguls interested in making cash? jesus elvis riped songs never really gave credit, he's the king of rock and roll.. but out of them all the who made this version way different.. lyrics and sound. nobody gives credit.
no kidding!! like who cares if the who redid it and spiced it up some. most of the songs we listen to were by someone else.. some do it better some to it worse..
This is one of my favorite blues tunes of all time. Wonderful !

I was speaking collectively to those who disparaged that others did this song, not specifically aiming at you.
Either way, I am glad I found this!

Scorn all those pathetic white boys who massacred Slim's beautiful music, listen to Jagger and the other wankers try to emulate that stunning voice.
