I'm sorry but I'm gunna say that Caldwell is disappointing here. She stays on the same beat for too long and some of her intentions do not make sense within the context of how Connery is reacting...she's not really trying to convince him. She's just spouting out the text. Come onnnn this text is so rich! It's so FULL of chances to change your tactic and she is not taking advantage of that!!
I agree with your sentiment... the one line on which it is obvious is when she doesn't immediately come back and link the split line ending with "we fail". That's a dead giveaway.
This is an excellent rendition between Connery and Caldwell. Not only does it sound authentic because we have an actual Scotsman playing Macbeth, but both actors make the scene look real. She really does try to convince her husband to do this deed, and slowly he starts to see her logic. Connery and Caldwell play that out very well. It's not just one actor doing well while the other actor throws lines just to move the scene along. You really do see the scene dynamic change. Excellent performance.
I saw the whole thing a while back, and He actually did a really good job, better than I thought he would. I especially liked his "tomorrow" soliloquy
Tho for all his literal faults, I still believe Sean plays the best Macbeth. Mark you he is Scottish, and yet methinks his tone has more like turned refined. Still to hear such a
text in that native tongue is so very hard to find. For you to post such a performance,
No, Macbeth, I expect you to quit decapitating people and letting your wife walk all over you...good God, man, you're James Bo--er, the great and noble Lord Macbeth!
I find Caldwell's grandeur and Connery's simplicity a fascinating combination, fire and earth. Both speak the speech tripplingly on the tongue, no? However, Caldwell, often a very sexy actress, isn't delivering on that front here in a role, and particularly, in a scene, that requires it more than perhaps any other, a fault all the more jarring opposite one of the sexiest men who ever lived.
the last line that sean says is wrong. he should have said false face must hide what the false heart doth know, it doesnt make sense the way he says it /:
With due respect to both casts, for this particular scene I prefer this performance. The meaning of the words is clearer. Ms. Caldwell's pacing is perfect.
thanks for this. i like to see connery in anything and this is quite rare. sorry to be childish, but kinda sounds like someone farts at 2:10. Probably just the stage squeaking but Connery almost looks amused.
prettyschmetterling--you are SO right about the blubbed line @ the end(and he did do well)--once again proving that the actor that hasn't screwed a line or taken a prompt HASN'T ACTED!!!!
In the play it's insinuated, in real life, Gruoch (Lady Macbeth) had a son called Lulach, since Macbeth never bared sons of his own. Her son became the 18th King of Scotland for less than a year, later was also killed by Duncan's son, Malcolm, who became Malcolm III MacDuncan.
A romantic scene? so you are saying...and i quote "I would, while it was smiling in my face, have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums and dashed the brains out!" is more romantic than "But soft, what light through yonder window breaks...it is the east and Juliet is the sun"
are you outta your mind?! If you percieved it as a romantic scene then it's obviously not a good performance, as the scene is supposed to show the repulsive, evil nature of lady M and convey the weakness of Macbeth.
Did anyone catch Connery's minor flub on the final couplet of the scene? He says "false HEART must hide what false FACE doth know." It should be reversed, and he realizes his error once "heart" leaves his mouth. Watch the final 10 seconds. Classic. Beauty of live TV.
Nice. But Connery goofed a line. He got the last line wrong... it's supposed to be "False face must hide what the false heart doth know." Connery says "heart" & "face" the wrong way around.
Tedericopera: to play Shakespeare you must drop any accent? That's stupid. Accents are relative. For example, in this clip, Sean Connery has an English accent, which sounds weird to Candadians, Americans, Austrlians, Irish, etc. Besides, Macbeth is supposed to be Scottish, so in this play it would make sense for Connery to have kept his Scottish accent.
Actually, some Scots does creep into his accent and it isn't the least bit disturbing. I didn't know he'd played Macbeth, and in the very distinguished company of Zoe Caldwell at that!

Sean Connery is magnificent as Macbeth - so unstagey and 'natural'. Lady Macbeth, by comparison is far less convincing...

Brought a tear to my eye. I would argue that this is the most romantiv scene in all of his plays.
Perfect play between a man and a woman, and reamins true even today.
