@K3Claymores No, its the 2nd installment; a prequel to Metal Gear Solid. Its just like MGS, but in a 2D overhead view.

The flaw in the MGS3: Subsistence version is that the wind doesn't have to and NEVER WILL blow north. If yer stuck, it's simple. Just smoke a cigar at the balcony, then, when Snake puffs some smoke, equip the hang-glider... and then yer on your way...

hm.. i just used a cigarette.. thinking the cig smoke would show wind direction.. it went upwards so i jumped and it worked straightaway..

was this just a fluke?

the same happened to me, i just figured if the smoke goes in that direction the wind does too and it worked. dunno if it was lucky but oh well...

Last time I played through it took me a looooong time before the wind blew north. Snake jumped, without smoking a cig first. Is the cig thing just for msx and not ps3?  I'm playing again now and I'm stuck here. The damn wind won't change direction.

i saw all your videos but i got caught back on tower building WITHOUT the glider when i already had it but i go to the spot in building #1 in big door and walk to last door there is and i dont see it cuz i already had it could you help me be able to find another way across the bridge OR could you tell me a location for another glider? ok? plz message me back instructions

Well, I just got to this part in the PS2-Version. And yeah, I just smoked a cig for a few seconds, then I was able to use the hang glider.

Konami probably changed this puzzle for the PS2-port to make it easier.

You don't need the gas granates ..uh-uh.

I never used them. I just listened to my "fan" an he said, to get the north wind.. so i thought: ok.. how can I see the wind? Yo.. start smoking :) Just smoke a cig on the jump-point and jump with the glider when the smoke is.. eh.. changing ^^it doesn't take long

Eh, no. Snake will not jump unless he had a cigarette to calm his nerves (see the video description), even when the wind direction is right. By your approach, when Snake finally jumps, the wind had by coincidence changed at that time; the cigarette is not indicating this.

So, to sum it up:

1. Equip Gas Mask and throw gas grenades until wind direction is north;

2. Quickly smoke a cigarette, then equip the Glider and jump.

@Kudduhchun K I reloaded the game 3 times and used all my gas grenades and they never pointed north. When I ran out, I smoked, equipped my glider and then presto it magically changed to north. So I don't think the smoke bombs are necessary like you say. Thanks.

Use the cardboard box and the transport trucks. If you don't have the cardboard box, then... ehm... tough luck, I guess.

i have the same problem here, im playing the metal gear 2 solid snake of the metal gear solid 3 substance. im playing in the original mode not easy, and i use all the 12 gas grenades and never go north. i think is some kind of bug, im going to try restarting the game from beginning.
