Sure he did. He was allowed the dignity of retiring. If he didn't, he would have been fired. Rumsfeld gave one specific example in that time. Security for the election. And they still haven't met some of the benchmarks. Rumsfeld called the reporter a liar and an idiot when all the benchmarks were there to see. This reporter kept his job and Rumsfeld didn't. His replacement Robert Gates turned things around and is being kept over by Obama.

I supported this war in the beginning because I believed the premise that WMD could fall into jihadist hands. I even supported the war knowing that was possibly a pretext to democratize Iraq because I believed it would turn Iraq into an oasis of reason and begin the toppling of dictators, and the rejection of dead-end religious movements in the region. I was wrong, and now I'm shamed by, and angry with my country.
