  • This is the HISTORY OF THE MUSIC BIZZ FOLKS! I know the story as I was conned repeatedly too and it is the constant from decade to decade! I don't think there's an honest agent or manager or music lawyer out there!

  • Gotta love Flo and Eddie.

  • I still love you!

  • Mark Volman is my professor.... we watched this in class.

  • @lydiahanie Does that mean you watch this particular clip on YouTube? Does Mark know this is uploaded here? You watched *THIS CLIP*?

  • At least you guys will live forever!!

  • managers 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 8/1. well ill be damned, the managers create the amount of notes in a major scale, even to repeat on the 8.

  • Friggin Flo & Eddie...................... Gotta love the American Way huh? As long as you're on the dishonest side! You can make a little money. Not for this Man. Just check out the Badfinger deal.......... Two guys killed themselves over that one. No excuse but the rich do get richer. OK, I am not a Communist.... I Just like what's right for honest people. & Blah blah..............

  • basically happens all the time! noone should be trusted from now on- that's the rule!

  • Reb Foster falls in there somewhere, right? Didn't he manage them at one point?

  • Somebody needs to make a documentary about bad deals famous bands made.

  • "We are not groupies! Hey, I told Robert Planet, I told Elton John...Roger Daltery never laid a hand on me!"

  • @fkappreciative

Do you like my new car? at the Filmore East... Hilarious.

  • I LOVE this! Turtles, you deserved SO MUCH MORE! If you only had a nickle for every time I've played and sung one of your tunes--well, you guys could probably retire on that amount alone. Sorry there are so many rat-humpers in this world. Bless you for ALL the fantastic music and happy times you gave me. (Did you know women really enjoy getting romantic on your tunes. Must be all the positive vibes, man!) All the best!

  • Love you, Turtles!!! "You Baby" just doesn't quit! "You Showed Me" is soooo mellow and soothing I think listening to it and singing along lowers my heart rate-I'll live longer, I know in my heart, because of great music-so much to say-Vanity Faire, Nino Tempo, the T Bones...Man the 60's was it!

    Thanks again, Turtles!!!

  • Does anybody have the names of all these managers, preferably in the order they occurred?

  • weird ,Flo has aged a lot and Eddie hasn't at all

  • @mansfieldmick You have it backwards... Howard is Eddie, Mark is Flo.

  • You know this is funny because they present it as being humorous fashoion ...BUT, when all this was going down and all they wanted to do is make music and get paid for it it wasn't funny.

....but, it is so typical of what was going on back then.

It's just as crooked today ...but with different type of individuals.

  • why is this funny? im still laughing!!! =] "sue sue-ing us, still sueing"

    they work of well together.

    I love these men!

  • @natillegal Yes, there's another comment further down that suggests they operate almost like a married couple, blending their conversation into one smooth thread, as one mind. Truly great love here.

  • HI FLO AND EDDIE, we're still here. DWEEZIL played ALBANY on Beethoven's birthday. Happy XMAS!

  • American capitalism at its "finest."

  • Hillarious.

  • a damn shame.

The music industry has been fucked up since day one :/

  • My name is Megan Utley. Bill Utley was my grandfather.. aka manager numero uno. he passed a few yrs ago.. anything particularly nice you can tell me about him?

  • @MegUtley1 No, he was just as conniving as all the rest of the managers... but I do like how it ends with them getting Utley to drop the case then screwing him by breaking up.

I have been in this business as long as these guys and my hat is off to them.

I know Howie and he is one sharp dude...

I am glad they got their rights back to them .. and your father should have dealt off the top of the deck with them from the git go.

  • Who is manager #6, the big TV star???

  • @harrietcow Read through some of the back comments. One theory is it's Dick Clark.

  • Brilliant! A stunning example of why I'm glad to be way too stupid to understand the Music Biz. So happy together.

  • Excellent video! Ah the wonderful world of the music business!

  • this is just a classic....thank you posting this....

  • @HistoryofTek I would also like to thank The Turtles for allowing this to stay up.

  • @TileNut Howard Kaylan is very cool......

  • @HistoryofTek No doubt they are very cool people. No doubt they have seen this video clip here and allowed it to stay up, for which I am extremely grateful. I've *SO* enjoyed hosting this video for the last 4 years.

  • @TileNut yea.......hey why don't you find Howard Kaylan on FB and make him your friend ....he is on my friend's list and I know he would accept you.....

  • i LOVe the animal turtle!!!!! So i love the Turtles :)

  • Snoopy and Woodstock sweater FTW

  • We hate them, they have dogs. LOL

  • This is part of a documentary done on the history of The Turtles that came out in '91 (I think), and is a must see for any fan of the band. Not only is it interesting, it's hilarious at times. Howard and Mark are really cool guys...able to laugh off the bad situations they encountered while they were young men.

  • This is great!

  • Brilliant stuff, guys. Hope you're doing good now.

  • They just played the LA County Fair last Sunday night.

  • I like Turtles.

  • Bass Player's Wife, Tour Money, Mexico...

Man, you guys never got a break o_o

  • that certainly is a bit of bad luck...i think its understandable though...it was a different world back then...I hope Frank treated them a little better. these days im lucky to get a gig that pays....let alone a manager that does Any thing! different world....Go flo and eddie may you be happy together...and have payed the dets back....

  • i remember you eddy, from heidelberg germany, when you played with frank zappa. you should remember me also.

  • wow. that is a lot of crap they had to go through. funny how they just laugh about it now

  • Whatever happened to Al Nicol?

  • Also, I fell in love with Zappa's stuff on first listen and the element you added ( I didn't even know it was you two back then) to the sound was what I found intruiging. You were always inspiring. Bless you for enduring the BS that was part of the whole scene. Looks like your rich though, with health and happiness - I hope so. Everyone talks fondly of the Turtles. I like your sense of wit and you never overdid that in your songs, just enough. The Turtles; Genius, or lucky? I say genius!

  • You two are terrific... you and ernie Maresca are heros to me...thanks for your fantastic songs and thanks for keeping the old spark alive with your tours - it really uplifts people, I hope you know that. People from back then feel bad about the world nowadays and you are like a big breast giving us nutrients when you play and tour. I'm glad you artists from back then started touring again. It's also encouraging when I see today's teens comment on the old stuff and wish they grew up in the day.

  • I so sorry! I loved y'all!

  • These guys played for my college homecoming back in '68. They were amazing for in addition to their own stuff, they could sound like ANY band popular at that time. They played for us as "The Turtles" but soon after, because of the lawsuits, they were forbidden to call themselves that AND they were even forbidden to use their OWN names! They became Flo and Eddy, and started playing with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention.

  • great attitudes those two have. XD

  • A real shame for the music Industry,,and the TURTLES,,My bestest favorite group..lol

  • "People spend more time asking forgiveness than being good.

Everyone's out stealing or home planning how they could."

    - Out of Breath by The Turtles

  • this is sad :[

  • Got to love it, total truth!

  • This is so funny, so rock n`roll, etc....

  • Bummer.

  • Alright, it's Flo and Eddie!

They should have went back to #1 sooner.

  • Ha! I filmed that, back in the late 80's, when I worked for Rhino! It's weird to accidentally bump into something you filmed--Mark and Howard were really nice guys--we also interviewed Ray Manzerak, Stephen Stills with Graham Nash and a bunch of other people for that documentary--I"m gonna look...

  • I love the way Howard keeps saying "Man!" like an aging hippie. "Man", did he age quickly. He's only 43 in that video. I guess it was all the drugs that did it.

  • You two are great........... What a great attitude you are winners........ you should do a book

  • Poor guys.....funny as hell tho, sorry lool

    i love #2~!!! loooooooooool

  • Boy, and I thought I HAD problems!!!!!!!!!!!!! But you know, those guys were great, and are the best now, since they can make fun of themselves!

  • These two guys were really great and their hits were classics. I`m sure this happened to a lot of bands back then who were wide eyed and naive.

  • ohh...demais, assombroso o modo como eles fazem você acreditar nisso...

eu amo os turtles...flo & eddie

  • awsome!!!^^

  • That was funny!!! :P

  • The Turtles are one of my all time favorite bands. Sucks that all this crap happened to them.

  • love that charlie brown sweater

  • I love them Turtles, and this is really tragic! You guys Rock! I can relate because I had a similar issue, but they are making money and I'm just sitting here in my pad!

  • OMG, what a shame. I love your songs. Unfortunately, this scenario happens to other groups. Sorry this happened to you, but I'm glad you have a sense of humor. 5 Stars on your video.

  • nice job guys, will you be my managers? just kidding. lots of vultures in those days, i think grand funk couldn't legally play their own material from their first three albums. crazy shit. capitalism, ain't it great? one thing all artists should know, business is just a legal way to steal money. write it down, it's the truth. watch your back and trust no one. peace.

  • at least they're still legends, wrote a perfect pop-song, all the managers have is money.

  • This is hilarious. Who was the manager who had the number 1 television show?

  • I have heard that it was Dick Clark, but I could not verify this for sure.

  • Gotta love Volman. He is my music business teacher. Let's just say class is pretty interesting.

  • LOL awesome

  • Awesome...lol

  • They recorded for White Whale records. Always thought there was something fishy 'bout that company!

  • Manager #1 was BILL UTTLEY. He was the one suing them for millions. He owned a club and "got big" later on as they say by managing Steppenwolf and Three Dog Night. (actually the Turtles' first manager was LA deejay Reb Foster, but they're clearly referring to Uttley on Manager #1.)

Manager #2 was DAVE KRAMBECK. He started out as their road manager and schemed them into making him their regular manager. He's the one who ran off to Mexico with Jim Pons' wife.

  • Brilliant. I've waited 2 years for that comment. Thank you!

  • Manager(s) #3 was TME Associates of New York. The transfer from Manager #2 (Krambeck) to TME was in March 1968.

  • i hate math..

  • ok... i wanna buy their stuff just cuz this video is so cool!

  • absolute best youtube video ever!

  • HAHAHAHA Skillz

  • Best youtube video ever.

Love the Turtles, "There You Sit Lonely" is seriously underrated shit.

  • turtles are cool

  • I hope that I can keep such a wonderful sense of humor and enthusiasm when my manager rips out my heart and hands it back to me on a plate! Very funny, very enlightening, and a nice look into the dog-eat-dog nature of the handling industry.

And, if I may... I guess your managers and yourselves weren't exactly so happy together.

But, hey, you've never heard that one, right?

  • hi guys,, look up gabriel {the band from seattle} I am hoping that I am the only person left with enough brains to say to you.. I am the choir you are not only preaching to,, but the choir you never had to join, .. google cary fly .. i dare you .. by the way all of us (northwest band guys) are probably your biggest fans.. we were your warmup act at kennedy pavillion in spokane , I think , what , '73? '74? '72?? we were called sleepy john..

  • Sara: Re: Spanky and Co....Yesterday's Rain...one of the greatest songs ever!

  • Hi Turtles.. what a nightmare! I hope you guys are getting all the money you deserve now. I'm from L.A. and used to go see you guys perform all the time..You were a great act! I'm so sorry you went through this... but, glad you haven't lost your senses of humor..I hope. Thanks for the good music!

  • OMG!! I LOVE YOU GUYS!! God Bless You!! I am so sorry this happened to you.... just not fair. I wondered where you had gone all those years! I hate the music industry!!!! What a story... Well I am a singer songwriter and this is why I can't get anywhere with my music. BTW,Something quite similar happened to The KINKS also!!

    All the best to you!

    Teri

  • Great video. What a laugh. Top ending.

  • I would have quit after #3, to hell with the whole mess!

  • I've give a cookie to whoever can list the names of these managers :)

  • This was just great and says a lot about them that they can be so humourous about stuff which must have worried them at the time. A lot of the British Sixties groups were also rucked - Animals, Yardbirds, Small Faces to name but a few. Thanks for posting.

  • Wow. And I thought Grand Funk got screwed over!!!

  • hey what happened to Grand Funk? i guess i missed that story!

  • Check out "Grand Funk Railroad History" here on YouTube. It is a 5-part documentary but well worth the watching.

  • Did you get all that??? Ha! Ha! Flo & Eddie are the greatest..

  • Manager number 6: The big TV star manager... Who do you reckon?

    I'm thinking Dick Clark maybe?

  • That WAS GREAT !!!

Flo and Eddie can make CHAOS seem like fun.

I loved their new years shows at the Bottom

line in New York City ... a great period.

And with Frank Zappa .. when they sang backup.

Wish I knew where they were playing ... but

according to this video .. they BROKE UP ! :)

  • The Turtles with Flo and Eddie still tour! Check out Hippiefest this year. If you love their music but haven't seen this band, you're missing about half the FUN! They sing like angels and act like demons.

  • I'm French,I can't understand every subtleties of the English speaking, but I can see they have a tremendous sense of humor.

Really good to see that these two guys are so Happy together !

  • wow o_o

  • Where are the bass tabs for the song Eleanor??

    Gee I think your swell..

  • Welcome back... Flo and Eddie!!

  • Been a Turtles fan from the 60's, and had no idea all this had gone on. So sorry you had such problems, and no one you could truly trust. I am happy you have kept your good nature, and great wit. We do hope that despite all this awful stuff, you will still continue to sing those wonderful songs. Thanks for sharing with your fans and keep up your great smiles and caring hearts.Peace and Luv,Debbie

  • I have to wonder how much more they could have accomplished if they didn't have to deal with all that bullsh*t! Cool band and cool guys!

    Thank-Q!

    Gregg

  • These guys are truly beautiful, they would help anyone out. Thanks to you both for your wisdom and chilldom and forgiveness not to mention your wonderful talent.

  • WOW...

    that was interesting...

    although i didn't really understand...

  • wow...

  • I love the Turtles, always will. If you get a chance check them out doing "Eve of Destruction". Very, very cool. Rock on guys. Great work with The Mothers also.

  • hilarious... sad... scary... dare I say these guys should self-manage from now on ;-)

  • I got one for you all, if you did not know it...They were doing great backing vocals on T-Rex albums, begginning with the album entitled T-Rex, then the big seller Electric Warrior, then The Slider. And they made the songs fantastic. They were brilliant at doing their job on them.

  • THIS IS SO FUNNY AND SO RIGHT!!!

I WAS NEVER INTO THEIR MUSIC BUT

I CAN APPRECIATE THEIR LOVE FOR THE

MUSIC AND I LOVE THEIR WIT. THANKS GUYS! PEPPER MaSHAY

  • Up and coming bands take note. Always read the fine print! And get yourself a good lawyer. (Glad they have a sense of humor about it anyway.)

  • That is terrible. I know alot of musicians back then were ripped off like crazy. They should not have to be working now.

  • My favorite single by The Turtles (and favorite song title of all-time) is "Grim Reaper of Love".

  • thanks for sharing the truth . it happens to the best.

  • Is that Chuck Portz on the right?

  • Mark is on the left, Howard is on the right.

  • I think the piece has a nice flo.

    -Eddy

  • They did'nt like #7 because he had dogs?

  • These guys are BRILLIANT!

  • who was manager #1??

  • Do I hear TURTLES come back tour????????? You guys need to play music and leave the white boards to the professionals. Or have it all ready laid out and just work with a pointer. Love the music of the Turtles.

  • HAHAH! MAN THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! I'VE BEEN TELLING BANDS, MUSICIANS, AND ARTIST'S THIS FOR YEARS! I've been as honest to any and all of them as anyone could ever be. I've pointed THESE things out to them myself. Not only as a writer, but a musician and label. GUESS WHO THEY'VE NEVER TRUSTED?! AGAIN THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! PLEASE DON'T REMOVE IT! IT IN IT'S SELF'S WORTH A FEW MILLION!

  • Incredible story! I think mgr #1 got his comeupance when the band broke up right after he dropped the lawsuit...WAY TO GO!! HAHAHA.

  • we're gonna find the "right" manager..we're gonna find the "right" manager..even if it kills us - Just to break up..give me a freaken break man

  • The Turtles are the one of most underrated band in the history of perhaps mankind, along with X and Syd Barrett. I heart the Turtles, though. The Turtles Present Battle of the Bands is an amazing album.

  • Well, at least you sang with The Mothers :)

  • I am manager #3, The agency they say there wasn`t, WAS Premier Talent in New York, the most successful rock and roll agency of all time.

  • For a manager I would expect greater and more coherent sentence structures.

  • These guys make me feel happy, thanks man

  • i want his snoopy jumper.

  • Flo and Eddie are awesome. They've been together longer than most married couples.

  • Dang guys, you (Flo & Eddie) really DO hate the business. It was fun touring with you but really, you should quit the biz.

  • Of course they hate the business. They're musicians, they like music. There's more to music than business.

  • Manager number 3!!! I AM manager NUMBER 3 and I would be glad to name every name Mark and Howard alluded to that I know. I did the best job I could with five guys who were high 24/7. I don`t remember getting $25,000 from them. But then, they probably don`t either.

  • Sniff, boo hoo. Where is Manager number 3's response? who's Number 2 in Mexico? Who's "Lawyer"? Who's Number 6 Big TV star??? at least? You promised:(

  • Sara: Re: Spanky and Co....Yesterday's Rain...one of the greatest songs ever!!!!!

  • Its 5 in the morning,im bumbed cause my dog died yesterday, cant sleep,so I stumble on this...holy crap is this funny, probably true but funny none the less, thanks Flo and Eddy for...Cheerin' me up?

  • Sorry about your dog! :-( My late husband was a contemporary of these guys - Oz Bach of Spanky and Our Gang. Oz always said changing agents is like changing deck chairs on the Titanic. I rest my case!

  • Thanks Sara! thats so cool.I remember Spanky and our Gang,im walkin' around like a zomby today just kinda floatin along ya know!

  • They are THE BEST..Such a great piece of info from my 2 favourite singers..Oh how them and Zappa must have gotten along right after that.

Its a sick world..Everyone for themselves.

Flo and Eddie FOREVER..You better be on ZPZ Next tour!!!!

  • Oh CRAP! I love the "Then we break up!" part! Ingenious and sad at the same time. Ingenious because they got that lawsuit out of the way, sad because they were forced to break up to do it.

  • Mark now teaches music business at Belmont Univeristy in Nashville, along with other things.

  • "Teaches Music Business"? Are you serious? Look at this clip! I mean, what are his qualififcations?

  • well... he knows what NOT to do...

  • "there ain't no money in it, it'll lead you to an early grave"- Tom T. Hall

  • "And then we break up". Love it! That be rock`n roll for ye.

  • Awsome !!!!

  • thank you for sharing

it is ugly but real and still happening....

    mj

  • I think the other guy meant the real names of the various managers -- that WOULD be interesting.

  • possibly one of the best you tube vids ever

  • thank god the business isn't like that anymore...LOL...it's worse!

  • THIS is a Master Class in "Rock´n´Roll Management" (and btw the compressed "Behind The Scenes"-story of 90 % of ALL rock-bands)! So if you are an upcoming and ambitiuos musician: Check this out NOW!

  • was that a true story?

  • The Turtles broke up before Mark and Howard joined the Mothers. However, for legal reasons, they first appeared on Chunga's Revenge as The Phlorescent Leech and Eddie.

  • Great video for musicians! Get a contract and get a lawyer that's good and is really on your side to check managers out. Gotta do your research and homework before you sign with anyone. Glad they made it. These guys worked with Zappa after their horrific music business journey.

  • nice sweater mark... hehehe..

and why are your glasses different?

  • sounds like a lot of drugs and bad decision. They needed to get a lawyer from the get go or a reputable manager. who hires the night club owner to manage you? thats a bad move. I am a manager and 1 we do not touch our bands money and 2 we have contracts that allow the bands to leave if we don't meet certain expectations. That is why you look at someones history not what comes out of his mouth.

  • Anyone know the real names?

  • Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman

  • Hahaha. Wow guys, that's a hell of a story. That's why I will never ever get a manager.

  • Thay ARE being very careful not to name names. I think Frank Zappa didn't manage the Turtles. I think these guys hooked up with Zappa after their Turtle days. This fiasco they say was between 1966 to 1974. Although many musicians did have a beef with Zappa, such as Wildman Fisher.

  • Why does Mark look SOOOOO much younger than Howard?

(Sorry Howard. I still think you guys are the BEST BAND EVER!!!

  • Mark and Howard were both born in 1947 and should have been about 43 years old here. Howard really aged quickly. I saw Howard and Mark at a concert in 1983; Mark was 36 but looked like he was 50 or so! Probably all the drugs from the 60's??

  • That was.... wow. Just... wow. Wow is all that can describe that.

  • Totally awesome!

The crux of how the music business operates in under 5 minutes!

Some people go to Business School for FOUR YEARS, or go into show business for THIRTY YEARS to learn the exact lessons Flo and Eddie have just imparted on us all. They Rock! he moral of the story? Manage yourself until you know how its done right, get your OWN lawyer after studying Entertainment Law and hire a manager you know you can trust because you know yourself How Band Managing is Done!
