This is ridiculous. Why is Thatcher the greatest peace time leader? What did she actually do for our country? She had good economic success. She effectively destroyed our national industries and turned us into a financial capital. But what did she do for our country, really? Clement Attlee is the best peace time PM. He used to be a Tory, but he only wanted to help ordinary people, and that's exactly what his policies were.
@Kozzy06 BS. Without Howe & Lawson, Thatcher would not have achieved economic success, because she was an economic illiterate. She promoted horrible Christian family values that make me physically ill, and didn't provide enough to the people she made redundant. All of the merits of her government are due to the policies of Howe & Lawson.
@ToaJoe She ended socialism, beat the argies, beat the unions, gave responsiblity to the indivdual, made millions shareowners, privitised failing state-funded and owned industries raising billions, gave millions the chance to buy thier council house, forced Britian to modernise, left the country far better prepared for the future and has been proven right about the EU.
She is the greatest peace time PM of modern times. Without a doubt.
@Kozzy06 That's simply not true. Howe & Lawson 'ended socialism, gave responsibility to the individual, made millions shareowners, privatized failing state-funded and owned industries raising billions, gave millions the chance to buy their council house, force Britain to modernise, left the country far better prepared for the future'. 4/5 of what you just complemented her on were the achievements of her chancellors. She was just a bad diplomat, nothing else.
Just shows how the 'more EU' or 'less EU' faultlines, then, and still, criss-cross the Labour and Conservative parties. The Conservatives more so perhaps.
Hague is now a minister in a coalition govt in which one of the parties . . LibDem's . . is so pro-EU they might as well call themselves the Brussells Doormat Party.
Be interesting to see how Hague goes . . will he be true to Thatcher's anti-eu legacy, or cave into the EU? Time will tell.
His interview would suggest otherwise. He was happy that maggie gave him direct advice. He still doesn't realise that the pre-1987 Thatcher would never have given strident advice like that. She was much more careful back then.
William Hague for PM and John Redwood for Chancellor, with Kenneth Clarke as Treasury Chief Secretary. Those three would be a devastating attack force, and the New Labour project would have been dead in the water long before now.
interesting video. I like both of them - Portillo and Hague. Yes, William's timing was very unfortunate after New Labour surge and good PR management. But at least he has rehabilitated himself and is much more popular than when he was leader. He will be in the upper elechons of British politics for quite a while. He is a man of common sense, there ware few of them in this day and age.
in think the tories wld win the nextb election evenn easier if hague was in charge now.i agree it was bad timing last time for him with labour so strong.thats not to say he cldnt have a 2nd crack at it if cameron b lows it...
I think Hague is the best PM that never was. His timing was awful and should have waited a few years before becoming leader of the Conservative Party. However hindsight is a wonderful thing!
Yeah what show is this on, and where is the rest of it! Fascinating stuff.

You just said it. She turned the country from the sick man of Europe into a econmic powerhouse.
That is what she did.

As great Winston Churchill said: "The Labour moves Britain a bit toward socialism, then the Tories come and conserve her precisely there"
Thatcher was right all along.

hague is a class act.... now. when he was leader it was a different story

He was too young and foolish for the job. He'd certainly be best for the Tories today - could be waiting in the wings I guess.

When Cameron becomes the next PM in 2009-2010 with a 60-75 seat Majority , Hague will be a great #2 and Portillo #3 as Defense Minister
gopconservative78 2 years ago 4
Portill isn't even an MP anymore though. Liam Fox is the Conservative shadow defence minister.
theredraven 2 years ago
That is true but he might run in 2010.....its possible

He's still relatively young for an MP, so I hope he changes his mind and runs for leader one day.

But Hague MUST have realised he couldn't win the next election, not with Labour sitting on a 179 seat majority, any fool could see that.
antonjon1 3 years ago 12
He will be a good #2 after David Cameron when he becomes PM in 2010

Hague was good until he shaved his head.
