  • best penzance video on youtube!! :) ive been watching this one for years. spent a lot of years there and this video just gives me the best feeling about the place :)

  • This is great!! It is nice to see Penzance in 1964, when my father was 10 years old.

My father used to tell me this and that about Penzance when he was small. Now I can see and understand what he were saying.

    Lovely!!

  • I went to Penzance in the 70's. My great grandfather was killed in the mine disaster in 1919. What a wonderful piece of nostalgia. Thanks for sharing

  • Wow, streets were much much cleaner than they are now...

  • The year I was born in PZ and not a bum druggie or dog turd in site, the good old days! Lets round up all the bums and kick em off the pier?

  • Lovely to see...I was living comparatively nearby in Mullion in 1964....Thanks for this!

  • Back when Penwith was full of real Cornish people! Now it's jammed with cockenys and northeners calling themselves local because they once visited here for 2 weeks!

E.g. Mousehole is now a frikin ghost town 95% of the year due to these considerate people buying second homes that locals could only dream of owning as a first home! They are left empty except from 2 weeks in the summer when their 4x4's block our county.

STOP doing this and support our local hotels, B&B's and businesses instead!!!

  • @Squats200 - Well said - its one thing people saying they support Cornish culture and wanting to visit for 5 minutes but actually doing a lot more damage than good. You have a strong point here.

  • What a lovely video, many thanks for uploading it. I was born at Tregonning Hill, then moved to Germoe, in 1945, went to school at the Presentation Convent in Penzance in 1950 and lived in Germoe, then on the council estate at Praa Sands up until 1956, when my parents moved to Oxfordshire. I'm still in love with Cornwall, those magic summer days in the Lido pool in Penzance, and roaming around that beautiful Cornish countryside as a kid.

    Lovely memories!

  • Excellent - WOW! I was just downm on the prom worrying about the storms and there were the waves in 64 (I was six months and living at Redruth). Love the PZ mods - kind of looks cooler than 2011?

  • I was in Penzance for the first time in Sept on my vacation. I really enjoyed my brief stay there...was interesting to see the footage from the 60's of then Penzance...wtth the Beatles music in the background. Growing up in Washington DC , I was a big fan of the Beatles as the entire country was! I love their music and kind of had my dream come true this Summer to visit Liverpool and also your beautiful town of Penzance!

  • terrific

  • Fantastic.... Being born and Bred Penzance, not a Yellow line in site, shows how mad the world has gone on power too the people nowadays, grat stuff.

  • hi any idea how to contact this guy in france re: use of the footage? Tried to email but got no answer - does anyone know him? ta

  • No spying cctv, no tasers, no lying Cornwall council or desecrating route partnership - the sixties were great! SAVE THE HOLY HEADLAND!

  • Does anyone remmember Mark wilson from jack stephens estate?

See my video if you know him.

  • how did cornwall council ruin our town so badly, looking at this vid , its busy with lots of independent shops, and people going about there daily buisness .

unlike the identikit soul vacume that is modern day pz

  • What a fantastic piece of social history saved for posterity - I live in Penzance and I love watching this video...I'm very glad you decided to record it

  • Great vid. Thanks for posting it.

  • charming

  • This video is very good, I remmember it being made!

  • Very nice film of a vanished world. Great music too! Thanks for posting.

  • To the Wonderful person that created this 'Little bit of Magic'...It's my Mothers Birthday today (75)...and we lived at 24 Penarlevene Cresent...nr the police station...i remember such wonderful times and I'm sure when my Nephews show my mum this Vid on FB she will too...Thamks...

  • A great town now, not much spoilt.....England as England should be.....Yes......I know......it's in Cornwall ;-)

One of our favourite holiday places:

  • This is a real trip down memory lane. 1964 was the year I first saw the town. I loved Cornwall so much that I stayed and retired here.

  • Absolutly fantastic, I live in Birmingham and love going to visit Penzance and surrounding areas when we go on our hols.

  • Was born in Penzance in 1966, this was awesome! Thanks so much!

  • I'm from St Ives but went to school in Pz. This reminds me of those simpler days, before traffic and commercialism engulfed everything. Thanks for reminding me.

  • This is truly wonderful footage. I wanted to know more about the person who took it, though. The woman in the orange cardi looks so modern — it's all come round again.

  • Thanks this is amazing

  • aswesome! thanks for this great video :)

  • This is really good - I wish I'd done the same where i live. Unlike others, I think it's fascinating how little Penzance has changed. Where I lived all the buildings have been knocked down.

  • Wow, i can't believe how different penzance is now and then. I go down tolver road every weekday on the bus and it looks so differnt. That area is so run down now, since treneer was built up... wow

  • penzance has unfortunately turned into a dead heart.

    It is dirty

and is sadly horrible, compared to this once perfect town.

  • Awesome love the zance and this a v.cool film - benni!

  • Fantastic movie! VERY forward thinking of you! Love the off the shoulder cardigan look!

  • Wow! so interesting to see how PZ used to be. Thank you!

  • Well, well - I lodged in Tolver Road, at 109, from 1949 until 1955 - the house was in shot at one point. Remember it ad the town exactly as shown!

  • Bloody brilliant video!

I love the music to the video it suits it well! I love the old cars buses old businesses ive seen this video loads of times now and love it even more!!

  • Moved from UK and now living in USA and this was the best 6 minutes of my day watching this footage.

  • This video is an absoloute corker.I love the fact those red phone boxes are STILL there in town.Penzance rocks....

  • Totally brilliant, and the music just perfect! Im from Penzance thanks for posting it.

  • WOO home town!!! i live there!!

    looks well wierd then

  • I'm from Penzance, Saskatchewan, Canada. The town was founded around 1911 and named after a girl living there that was originally from this Penzance.

  • I was born in Penzance in 1967 and i went to Lescudjack school, before they change the name to Sir Humphrey Davey school.

I love the video it brought back memories.

  • Wonderful - so nostalgic! I was 12 at the time, and born near PZ. The people look so slim and healthy - no fatties! Any more? Other parts of Cornwall?

  • This wont load up!!

  • Oh what a trip down memory lane thank you, so very much.

  • Haha, this is awesome seeing my home town how it was!

  • A lot of the town looks the same, I do love the place. Nice to see how slim and smart the people looked back then! I agree people looked happier but also healthier. People were more active then. A lovely vid.

  • I love this video!!!

a lot of it looks exactly like it does today, it hasn't changed much - i would have loved to have lived at this time - so care free, everyone seems so much happier back then - as they say "those were the days"

I live there and am proud 2 do so... I Love it

I have alway's lived near there and I was born in Cornwall, great place, especially on a motorbike!!!

  • Omg.. I LIve There ! .. LoVE IT ,, No Place Is Better For Us Cornish-ns? lmao!

  • Since they made the bypass at the end of the eighties, the traffic isn't that bad as it seemed to be in those days..

Love to all you cornish out there!!!

    Helen - now in Germany

  • Wonderful memories from a Penzance born and bred lady (a Pengelly) Thank you

  • Pure nostalgia - I was 18 then and my family were delighted to see it. I think I know the two girls at the swimming pool.

  • Remember the milk machine well, for sixpence you could have plain or strawberry flavour and it was really cold!!!

    Yum!!!!!!!!

  • I have been drinking gallons of these milk boxes from this milk machine,I remember it was sixpence, cold and the strawberry flavour!!!

  • @dahriz Where was that milk machine? I remeber one by Humphry Davy statue.

  • @robzrob

    The other milk machines were;

One at the top of Cayseway haead against the haexagonal Market office, facing across to the garage. The other was in the raiway station just outside what is now the car park enterance, or it coud have been over by the little cafe that used to be on the edge of the harbour before they filled it in. think there is still a cafe there to this day. Think it used to be run by a family called Jenkins??

  • @dahriz my family have been holidaying in Penzance, newlynand mousehole for years what lovely video thankyou for sharing ...
